To redirect an ASIC Bitcoin miner, identify its exact model and firmware, copy the current Stratum hostname and port plus the pool’s worker format, enter those values in the miner’s pool configuration, save the change, reboot when required, and verify the worker both in the miner’s status page and on the pool dashboard. Menus, API commands, authentication, and restart behavior differ among Bitmain Antminers, WhatsMiner models, Avalon units, and firmware versions, so do not treat one manufacturer’s procedure as universal.

What you need before changing anything

A pool switch is usually a configuration change, not a hardware modification. You need temporary access to the miner’s management interface and the pool’s current connection instructions. Prepare these items first:

  • Exact miner identity: record the manufacturer, model, control-board or firmware version, and the miner’s local IP address. A menu documented for one Antminer generation may not exist on another, and WhatsMiner and Avalon controls use different commands.
  • Pool connection data: obtain the current Stratum hostname, port, worker or account naming rule, and password instruction from the pool’s own setup page. Endpoints copied from an old tutorial can be retired, moved, or assigned to a different region.
  • Administrative access: have the miner’s management username and password available. Do not assume sample credentials in an API manual are still enabled on your device.
  • Network access: make sure the miner can reach the internet through the correct gateway and that outbound traffic to the pool’s port is allowed. Keep a record of the existing pool entries so you can restore them if necessary.

Changing a pool does not transfer coins or balances. It changes where the miner submits work. Any balance already credited to the old pool remains governed by that pool’s payout rules and account access.

Understand the four pool fields

Pool URL and port

The URL is normally a Stratum hostname followed by a port, for example stratum.example.net:3333. Use the exact hostname and port currently published by the selected pool. Some interfaces ask for one combined value; others provide separate URL and port boxes. Do not add a protocol prefix such as http:// unless the pool’s instructions explicitly require it.

Worker or user

The worker field is the identity the pool uses to attribute shares to a device or group of devices. It is not a universal Bitcoin protocol string. A pool may require an account name, an account name followed by a separator and worker label, or another format. Bitmain’s Antpool guide gives the illustrative format sub-account.miner name; that example is not a rule for every pool.

Password

Many pools accept a simple worker password, while others specify a fixed value, permit an arbitrary placeholder, or leave the field blank. Enter exactly what the pool documents. A password accepted by one pool can be rejected by another, so do not carry the old pool’s value into a new configuration unless the new instructions say to do so.

Backup pool slots

Most ASIC interfaces provide more than one pool slot. A miner normally tries the highest-priority live entry and falls back when it cannot connect. Configure a backup only with a valid current endpoint and credentials. An obsolete or unreachable first-priority entry can delay failover or make a miner appear offline while it repeatedly retries the wrong destination.

How configuration differs by miner family

Route Documented scope Configuration fields Restart behavior Important caution
Local web interface Common on web-managed ASICs; labels vary by model and firmware Pool URL, worker/user, password, and often priority slots May apply immediately, restart automatically, or request a reboot Follow the exact model manual; a saved form alone does not prove that shares are being submitted
Bitmain API Bitmain’s documented miner-configuration routes url, user, and pass in pool objects; examples show up to three pools Depends on firmware and the operation performed Local-network examples use HTTP Digest authentication; protect the management interface
WhatsMiner API MicroBT/WhatsMiner set.miner.pools operation Pool address, worker, and password; up to three pools are documented Use the model/API documentation to determine whether a restart is needed The parameter is encrypted and Base64-encoded; it is not a paste-ready plain-text command
Avalon A10 API Canaan Avalon A10 manual setpool command with pool address, worker name, and worker password Configuration takes effect after a reboot Do not infer the same reboot rule for other Avalon models or firmware

Safe web-interface procedure

1. Identify the firmware and make a backup of the current values

  1. Open the miner’s device-information, system, or status page and write down the full model and firmware version.
  2. Open the current pool or miner-configuration page and copy each existing pool URL, worker name, password policy, and priority order into a private record. Do not publish credentials in a support forum or screenshot.
  3. Check whether the interface offers an export or configuration-download function. If it does, save the file in a protected location, but do not assume an export from one firmware release can be imported into another.

2. Retrieve current settings from the chosen pool

  1. Sign in to the intended pool account, if an account is required, and open its current ASIC or Bitcoin-mining setup instructions.
  2. Choose the server region and connection type appropriate for your location and network. Copy the hostname and port exactly, including punctuation and capitalization where relevant.
  3. Note the required account and worker syntax. If the pool asks for a sub-account plus a worker suffix, create or select the correct sub-account before editing the miner.
  4. Record the pool’s password instruction. If it says a value is optional or arbitrary, use a simple value that does not reveal an account password; if it requires a specific token, use that token.

3. Open the pool configuration page

  1. On many web-managed ASICs, select Miner Configuration, Pool, or a similarly named page. The label and navigation path depend on the manufacturer and firmware.
  2. Replace the first pool slot’s URL, worker/user, and password with the values from the pool’s current instructions.
  3. For each backup slot you intend to use, enter a separate valid endpoint and the corresponding worker credentials. Leave unused slots empty rather than filling them with guesses.
  4. Check for a priority, enabled, or active switch. Make the desired pool the highest-priority enabled entry and ensure that a stale endpoint is not still first in the list.

4. Save, apply, and wait for the miner to reconnect

  1. Select the interface’s Save, Apply, or equivalent control once. Do not repeatedly submit the form while the control board is writing configuration.
  2. Read the confirmation message. Some firmware restarts automatically; other firmware saves the values but displays a separate reboot control.
  3. If the interface or the model manual requires a reboot, restart through the management page or the documented physical procedure. Avoid cutting power while configuration is being written.
  4. Allow the miner enough time to initialize hashing and establish a Stratum connection. A brief period without accepted shares immediately after a restart is normal.

In Bitmain’s support procedure for connecting an ANTMINER A3 to Antpool, the instruction is to click Save & Apply; that guide says the miners will restart. The guide was updated April 6, 2022, and its endpoint examples are historical, so use the current pool instructions for the actual URL and port.

Bitmain Antminer: web and API details

Using the web interface

On a Bitmain miner, look for Miner Configuration and edit the pool entries shown there. Bitmain’s support example uses a pool URL, a worker in the form sub-account.miner name, and a password, followed by Save & Apply. The exact labels and page layout vary by Antminer model and firmware. After the restart, use Miner Status to inspect the active pool and worker rather than assuming the form submission succeeded.

Using the documented local API

Bitmain’s API reference documents a GET configuration route at /cgi-bin/get_miner_conf.cgi and a POST route at /cgi-bin/set_miner_conf.cgi. The pool objects contain url, user, and pass fields, and the example configuration includes up to three pool entries. These routes show how the settings are represented; they are not a guarantee that every model, firmware build, or account type exposes the same API.

The Bitmain examples use HTTP Digest authentication in a local-network context. Authenticate only over a trusted management network, change any default administrative password, and do not expose the miner’s web or API port directly to the public internet. A script that can read configuration should be treated as capable of revealing worker credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bitmain also documents a firmware-era caveat: on firmware versions released before May 20, changing only the operating mode without changing the pool can reset pool settings. If you are automating several settings at once, read the existing configuration first, send the complete intended pool objects, and verify the result afterward. Confirm the exact behavior for your firmware before relying on this route in production.

WhatsMiner: why the API example is not a generic command

MicroBT’s WhatsMiner API reference names the operation set.miner.pools. Its pool objects include a pool address, worker, and password, and the documentation describes up to three pools. Unlike a simple web form, the operation’s parameter is encrypted and Base64-encoded. That means a plain-text JSON example copied from an unrelated post is not a valid or safe substitute.

  1. Confirm the exact WhatsMiner model, firmware, API version, and authorization method in the official documentation for that device.
  2. Prepare the pool address, worker, and password in the format required by the pool.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s documented encoding and authentication process to construct the request; do not invent an encoding key or paste credentials into an online converter.
  4. Send the request only from a trusted local administration host, then inspect the miner’s pool and status response.
  5. Follow the model’s restart instruction before judging the change successful.

If you do not already operate the WhatsMiner API securely, the local web interface is usually less error-prone. The API is useful for controlled fleet automation, not as a shortcut around the model’s authentication and encryption requirements.

Avalon A10: reboot is part of the change

Canaan’s Avalon A10 API manual documents a setpool command with pool address, worker name, and worker password parameters. The manual explicitly states that the new configuration takes effect after a reboot. A successful command response therefore does not mean the miner is already hashing to the new pool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify that the command syntax and authentication match your Avalon A10 firmware.
  2. Enter the current pool address, worker name, and worker password supplied by the pool.
  3. Issue the documented reboot after the configuration command completes.
  4. After startup, check the pool shown in the miner’s status output and then confirm the worker on the pool dashboard.

Do not apply the A10 reboot rule blindly to another Avalon generation. Use that model’s manual to determine whether a web save or API call applies immediately, restarts automatically, or requires a separate reboot.

How to verify that the switch worked

Check the miner first

  • Open the miner’s status or dashboard page after the restart.
  • Confirm that the active pool URL matches the current hostname and port you entered, not an old backup entry.
  • Check the pool’s state indicator, often shown as Alive, Active, or a similar label.
  • Verify the displayed worker or user string character by character, including separators, capitalization, and suffixes.
  • Watch the accepted and rejected share counters, hash-rate readings, and connection time. A counter that remains at zero after the miner has had time to work warrants investigation.

Check the pool second

  • Open the pool dashboard for the account or sub-account used in the worker field.
  • Look for the exact worker name. A miner can be connected while appearing under an unexpected worker if the naming syntax was altered.
  • Allow for a short reporting delay after startup. Compare the miner’s accepted shares and the dashboard’s last-seen time rather than expecting the dashboard to update at the instant you click Save.
  • Confirm that the reported activity is associated with the intended account, especially when moving between sub-accounts.

Verification requires both sides: a saved form proves only that a value was written locally, while a pool dashboard entry proves that the miner reached the intended service and submitted work.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely causes Checks and corrective action
Pool shows offline or dead Wrong hostname or port, DNS failure, blocked outbound traffic, or a pool outage Re-copy the current endpoint from the pool, test the miner’s gateway and DNS settings, check firewall rules, and try the pool’s documented alternate region if available.
Miner is online but no worker appears Worker spelling, account prefix, separator, or sub-account is wrong Compare the miner’s user field with the pool’s required format one character at a time; check the correct account dashboard and wait for the normal reporting interval.
Authentication or authorization error Incorrect worker password, an account password used in the wrong field, or a pool-specific token omitted Read the pool’s password instruction again and replace only the worker credentials; do not expose the account’s main password in a miner field unless explicitly required.
Old pool remains active New entry was saved in a lower-priority slot, an old slot is still enabled, or the firmware did not apply the change Inspect every pool slot and priority, disable obsolete entries, save again, and reboot when the model requires it.
Settings revert after reboot Configuration write failed, firmware limitation, incomplete API object, or a control-board issue Read the configuration back, record the exact response or error, apply the complete intended pool list, and consult the model’s firmware documentation before repeating the operation.
Many rejected shares Wrong Stratum port, stale connection, unstable network, or an incompatible protocol option Use the pool’s ASIC-specific port, inspect latency and packet loss, and compare the miner’s error messages with the pool’s connection guidance.
Miner hashes but dashboard remains unchanged Dashboard delay, wrong account, or worker string entered under another account Check the pool’s last-seen time, verify the complete account and worker path, and allow a short interval before changing settings again.

Security practices for pool changes

  • Keep management local: administer the miner from a trusted LAN or a secured private access path. Do not port-forward its web or API interface to the internet.
  • Change administrative credentials: replace factory or sample passwords before automating configuration. Worker passwords and administrator passwords serve different purposes.
  • Protect API logs: request bodies, shell history, browser auto-fill, and copied configuration files can contain worker credentials or account identifiers. Restrict file permissions and remove temporary files when no longer needed.
  • Validate endpoints: a malicious or mistyped pool address can redirect hashing without producing an obvious hardware error. Copy endpoints from the pool’s official, current instructions and review them before saving.
  • Use the manufacturer’s encoding: WhatsMiner’s encrypted, Base64-encoded pool parameter and Bitmain’s authenticated API are examples of vendor-specific security requirements. Never send unencrypted credentials merely because a generic script accepts them.
  • Schedule changes: a save or reboot interrupts hashing. Make the change during a maintenance window when possible and monitor the device until it returns to a stable accepted-share rate.

When to use the web interface, an API, or a fleet tool

Choose the web interface for one-off changes

A local web page is the clearest option when changing one miner. It exposes the fields you need, shows pool priority, and usually provides a visible save or reboot message. The trade-off is that labels and behavior can differ across firmware, so follow the model-specific manual.

Choose the vendor API for repeatable automation

An API is appropriate when you manage many miners and can securely handle authentication, encryption, error reporting, and rollback. Bitmain’s configuration routes and WhatsMiner’s set.miner.pools operation demonstrate that the same conceptual fields can be represented very differently. Build automation that reads the current configuration, writes the intended complete pool list, checks the response, and verifies status after any restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a fleet-management layer only when it preserves vendor behavior

A third-party management layer can simplify inventory and bulk changes, but it should not hide whether a model needs a reboot, how credentials are protected, or which pool slot became active. Keep a manufacturer-native verification path available for every device.

Restoring the previous pool or recovering from a bad change

  1. Use the recorded old URL, worker, password instruction, and priority order. If those values are unavailable, retrieve the current endpoint from the previous pool’s official documentation rather than from an old forum post.
  2. Return to the miner’s pool configuration page or the model’s documented API and replace the entries with the known-good values.
  3. Remove or disable the unintended pool slots so the miner cannot silently fail over to them.
  4. Save and reboot according to the model’s documented behavior.
  5. Verify the restored pool in the miner status page and the corresponding worker dashboard.

If you lose web access after a configuration change, first check the miner’s local IP address, gateway, and DHCP lease. A pool URL change should not normally alter those network settings; if they changed at the same time, restore network access before troubleshooting pool credentials. Use the manufacturer’s documented reset procedure only as a last resort, because a reset can erase network settings and other operational values.

Key decisions before you press Save

  • Is the hostname and port copied from the pool’s current instructions rather than a dated example?
  • Does the worker string follow this pool’s account, sub-account, and suffix convention?
  • Is the password field filled according to the pool’s rule, not the old pool’s habit?
  • Are backup slots valid, correctly prioritized, and actually needed?
  • Do you know whether this exact model and firmware apply the change immediately, restart automatically, or require a manual reboot?
  • Can you verify the active URL and worker locally and see the worker on the pool dashboard afterward?
