If you know your current AT&T sign-in password, change it from your account profile: open Your info, choose Password, select Edit, enter the replacement password, and save. If you cannot sign in because you forgot it, use AT&T’s reset flow with your AT&T ID, associated last name, and an available verification method. Afterward, update saved credentials, review recovery details and users, and check the separate passcodes that protect account changes.
The menu labels below reflect AT&T’s support instructions updated April 3, 2026. AT&T can change its interface, so use the linked official help pages if a label has moved.
Choose the right AT&T password path
Your first decision is whether the existing sign-in password still works. A password change is faster because you authenticate normally; a reset requires identity verification and may need a phone call if no recovery method is available.
| Situation | Where to start | What you need | Likely result |
|---|---|---|---|
| You know the current password | AT&T account profile | Current sign-in access | Change the password under Your info > Password > Edit |
| You forgot the password | AT&T password-reset flow | AT&T ID, associated last name, and a verification option | Verify your identity, then create a new password |
| No recovery option works | AT&T support | Account information for assistance | Call 800.288.2020, as AT&T’s support guidance directs |
These are separate from an AT&T account passcode and, for eligible wireless customers, an extra-security passcode. Those codes are used for different kinds of verification and are not substitutes for the online sign-in password.

How to change your AT&T password when you know it
- Open your AT&T account profile. Navigate to the AT&T account page yourself and sign in. Starting from a bookmark or by typing the address is safer than using an unexpected email or text link.
- Find Your info. In the profile, locate the section labeled Your info.
- Edit Password. Next to Password, select Edit. The page may ask you to authenticate again before exposing password controls.
- Enter the new password. Use a password that is not used for another service and does not contain obvious personal information or a predictable sequence.
- Save the change. Wait for the confirmation on the page before closing the browser. If the page reports an error, correct the format or retry from the profile rather than repeatedly submitting an uncertain value.
- Replace stored credentials. Update your browser’s password manager, phone and tablet mail settings, streaming or calling apps, and any other application that signs in with the same AT&T ID. If you use that ID and password for AT&T Mail, change the saved password there as well.
AT&T’s official procedure is documented in Change or Reset Your Sign-in Password (updated April 3, 2026). The page labels can change, but the account-profile method is the supported route.
What to do if the new password is rejected
- Check the length and character rules in the next section; a copied trailing space can also cause a mismatch.
- Type the password once manually to rule out an old value being inserted by autofill.
- Try a private browser window if an extension or stale session keeps returning the old profile.
- Do not keep guessing if you suspect someone else changed the password. Move to the reset process and review account security.
How to reset an AT&T password you forgot
- Open AT&T’s reset page directly. Use AT&T’s account support page or a bookmark you created, not a link in an unsolicited message.
- Identify the account. Enter your AT&T ID and the last name associated with that ID.
- Select a verification method. Choose one of the recovery options AT&T presents and complete the requested code or identity checks. The options shown depend on the recovery information already on the account.
- Create and confirm a replacement. Enter the new password twice if prompted, then submit it.
- Sign in again and update devices. Test the new credential on the account website, then replace old saved passwords in browsers, phones, mail clients, and other apps.
If AT&T does not offer a usable recovery method, or the reset finishes but sign-in still fails, its support instructions list 800.288.2020 as the phone fallback. Have your account details ready and explain that the online recovery path did not work. The full instructions are in AT&T’s Change or Reset Your Sign-in Password article.
Reset problems and safe recovery decisions
- Unknown AT&T ID: Look for the ID in an old AT&T bill or account email, then use AT&T’s own recovery prompts. Do not send the ID or a verification code to a person who contacted you unexpectedly.
- Verification code never arrives: Confirm that the displayed recovery number or email is yours, check spam and blocked messages, and request a new code only from the AT&T page.
- Recovery information is unfamiliar: Treat it as a possible compromise. Stop using links from messages, contact AT&T through its official support channel, and change the password and passcode after you regain control.
- Repeated lockouts: Stop trying old passwords. Multiple devices or apps may still be submitting the previous credential; update or remove those saved entries after the reset.
AT&T password rules and how to choose a strong one
AT&T lists a sign-in password length of 8–24 characters. Its support page identifies these accepted character types: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and the special characters + = # ? * $ ! _ -. The list describes what the field accepts; it does not say that every password must contain a particular mix of character classes.

AT&T’s security advice is to use a long, unique password, avoid personal details and common words, and reject obvious sequences such as 123456 or abcdef. Do not reuse the AT&T password for another website, especially an email, banking, shopping, or social account. If you have several AT&T IDs, give each one a different password.
A practical way to create the replacement
- Start with a phrase you can remember but that is not a public fact about you.
- Make it substantially longer than the eight-character minimum while staying within AT&T’s 24-character maximum.
- Add permitted punctuation or numbers in a way that does not create an obvious pattern.
- Check that the final value is unique to this AT&T ID and contains no name, address, birthday, phone number, or familiar sequence.
- Save it in a reputable password manager rather than in an unprotected note.
Never paste a password into a reply to a supposed AT&T representative. AT&T’s fraud guidance says it will not ask you to read back a sign-in passcode or PIN during an unsolicited contact.
Update every place that used the old password
Changing the web password does not automatically tell every device or application about the new value. Work through the following checklist immediately after a successful change or reset:

- 【Smooth and waterproof surface】: Micro-textured cloth surface, for extremely precise mouse control and a smooth movement. When liquid splashes on the gaming mouse pad, it forms water droplets and slides down. Will not delay your work or gameplay.
- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
- Browser password manager on each computer and browser profile.
- Phone and tablet account settings, including mail synchronization.
- Desktop mail applications and any AT&T Mail app session.
- Television, game-console, home-automation, or calling applications that use the AT&T ID.
- Password-manager records shared with family members or stored on a second device.
- Saved credentials in scripts or network tools, if your account is used for an approved technical integration.
When an app repeatedly reports an incorrect password, remove its saved AT&T credential and add the new one rather than trying many old values. A password change can leave an existing browser session open; AT&T’s reviewed guidance does not establish that every active session is universally signed out. If you need to know which sessions remain active, ask AT&T support for the current behavior.

Review recovery information
Keep the contact details on the account current, and check which phone numbers or email addresses can be used to reset the password. If the recovery email is not private or no longer belongs to you, replace it. This review matters because possession of a recovery channel can be enough to start a reset even when the password itself is strong. AT&T’s account-protection guidance explains these checks in Protect Your AT&T Account (updated April 12, 2026).
Understand the three different credentials
| Credential | Primary use | Key details |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in password | Online AT&T account and services sign-in | 8–24 characters; changed under Your info > Password > Edit |
| Account passcode | Verification in an AT&T store or during a support call | Separate from the sign-in password; new passcodes are 4–8 digits |
| Wireless extra-security passcode | Additional protection for online wireless sign-in when eligible | Separate from both other credentials; availability depends on account type |
AT&T says the extra-security option is available for wireless accounts that are not combined with AT&T Internet or U-verse TV. Business accounts do not have this option. Details are in Learn About AT&T Account or Extra Security Passcodes.

Change an account or extra-security passcode
- Open your AT&T account profile and sign in.
- Choose Settings.
- Scroll to Passcode and select Edit.
- Follow the verification prompts and save the new code.
AT&T specifies 4–8 digits for new passcodes. Avoid three or more sequential digits, such as 123, and three or more identical digits, such as 777. Do not use a passcode that is also used for a phone unlock, payment card, or another service.
Audit secondary and authorized users
Review every person who can access the account. AT&T distinguishes secondary online users, who can have online account access, from wireless retail authorized users, who can perform permitted actions in a store. Remove people who no longer need access and correct permissions that are broader than necessary. A password change alone does not replace this access review.
Consider Wireless Account Lock
For a wireless account, Wireless Account Lock can disable some transactions and account changes for all devices and lines on that account. AT&T does not describe it as blocking every possible change, so do not treat it as a universal freeze. Review what the setting covers before relying on it for a particular threat.

What to do if you suspect compromise or a scam
Act as though the credential is exposed if you shared it, see an unfamiliar recovery address, receive an unexpected reset notice, or notice account activity you did not authorize.
- Go directly to AT&T’s website or app and change the sign-in password. Do not follow the suspicious message’s link.
- Choose a password that has never been used on another service.
- Change the AT&T account passcode and, if eligible, the wireless extra-security passcode.
- Review secondary online users, wireless authorized users, recovery phone numbers, and recovery email.
- Check recent account activity and contact AT&T through an official channel about transactions you do not recognize.
- Ignore requests to disclose a password, PIN, or verification code. AT&T says it will not ask you to read back a sign-in passcode or PIN during an unsolicited contact.
AT&T’s fraud instructions are at Protect Your Account From Fraud or Scams. If you receive a compromised-password alert, do not assume the alert proves AT&T itself was breached. AT&T says such an alert can mean that a saved ID/password combination appeared in a breach at a non-AT&T service. Change the password directly in AT&T and replace any other reused version elsewhere. See Learn About Compromised Password Alerts (updated April 15, 2024).
If your AT&T Mail account may be hacked
Email compromise needs a wider cleanup because an intruder can use forwarding rules or stored contacts even after you change the password.

AT&T’s detailed recovery guidance is Recover a Hacked AT&T Email Account (updated March 4, 2026). It recommends checking devices and mail settings; it does not require a particular antivirus product.
When to contact AT&T
Use AT&T support when the reset page offers no recovery method, identity verification repeatedly fails, an unauthorized user remains on the account, or you need confirmation about active sessions or a disputed transaction. For password-recovery failures, AT&T lists 800.288.2020. Reach that number through the official support information rather than a number supplied in an unexpected message.
Before calling, note the AT&T ID, the time you noticed the problem, which recovery options appeared, and any suspicious changes. Never volunteer a full password or one-time verification code to an unsolicited caller. Ask the representative which account, wireless, and email protections should be reset separately; changing one credential does not necessarily change the others.
