To choose where future Xbox PC games are installed, use the Xbox app’s install-location prompt when the title supports it, or set a Windows-wide default under Settings > System > Storage. To relocate or repair a game that is already installed, open that game’s Manage controls in the Xbox app. These are different controls: Windows chooses a default for a content type, while the Xbox app acts on an eligible game.

What controls the location of Xbox PC games?

There is no single folder that applies to every Xbox PC installation. Location depends on which setting you are changing, the Windows version, the Xbox app experience currently installed, and whether the game exposes the app’s supported management controls.

Approach Scope When it applies What it can do Main limitation
Windows Storage setting Default drive for a Windows content type, including new apps Future installs or other new content Lets Windows use a selected drive as the default destination Changing it does not automatically move games already installed
Xbox app install choice An individual supported game During installation Lets you select an available game directory or drive when the app offers the choice Not every title or app version exposes the same options
Xbox app Manage controls An installed, eligible game After installation Can provide move, repair, and local-file actions Move and repair availability is title-dependent

Use the Windows setting when you want a general default for future content. Use the Xbox app when you need to choose a destination for one game or work with a game that is already installed. Do not expect a Windows default change to relocate an existing library.

Set the Windows default drive for new apps and content

Windows exposes default destinations by content type. The drive must be connected before it can be selected. This setting affects where Windows attempts to put future content; it is not a migration tool for an existing Xbox library.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Windows 11

  1. Connect the internal or external drive you want to use.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select System, then Storage.
  4. Open Advanced storage settings.
  5. Select Where new content is saved.
  6. For the content type covering new apps, choose the target drive. Review the other content categories and change only those you intend to redirect.

The list is generated from drives Windows currently recognizes. If the target drive is disconnected, it will not appear. Reconnect it, wait for Windows to mount it, and return to the same page.

Windows 10

  1. Connect the destination drive.
  2. Open Settings and choose System.
  3. Select Storage.
  4. Choose Change where new content is saved.
  5. Set the destination for new apps, then adjust any other content categories separately if needed.

The wording differs from Windows 11, but the purpose is the same: it sets a Windows default for future content. It does not promise that the Xbox app will expose a move command for every title.

Check the result before installing a large game

  • Confirm the selected drive remains connected and has enough free space.
  • Start an installation of a small app or game, or open the Xbox app’s install flow for the title you want.
  • Look for the destination shown by the app before confirming the download.
  • If the Xbox app presents its own location selector, treat that per-game choice as the authoritative destination for that installation.

Choose a location when installing a game in the Xbox app

The Xbox app can expose an install-location choice for supported titles. The exact button names and layout can change as the app is updated, so look for a drive, folder, or location selector in the installation panel rather than relying on one permanent label.

  1. Open the Xbox app on Windows and sign in to the account that owns or can access the game.
  2. Open the game’s product page or your library and select Install.
  3. Before confirming, inspect the installation panel for the destination drive or folder control.
  4. Select the connected drive and directory you want, if the control is available.
  5. Confirm the installation and allow the Xbox app to create or use the supported game directory.
  6. After installation begins, verify that the destination shown in the app matches your choice.

If no location selector appears, the title or current app experience may not support a custom destination through that flow. In that case, set the Windows default first, then reopen the install panel. Do not assume that manually dragging a managed folder to another drive will produce a supported installation.

Why the app may not show the same controls for every title

Xbox app management is an eligibility-based feature. Microsoft’s technical documentation describes selecting a game directory and moving supported games across drives, not a universal promise for every Xbox PC title. A game can therefore install normally while lacking a move or repair command. The absence of a control is a compatibility limitation, not necessarily a permissions error.

Move or repair an installed game with Manage

For an existing installation, use the Xbox app’s game-management interface instead of changing the Windows default and waiting for the old files to move. The app’s library view can expose a Manage command from the installed game’s menu; depending on the version, this may be available from a right-click menu or an overflow menu.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model)
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
  1. Open the Xbox app and go to the installed-game library.
  2. Locate the game you want to work on.
  3. Open the game’s context menu—such as right-clicking the title or selecting its overflow menu—and choose Manage.
  4. Review the actions offered for that title. If Move is available, select it and choose a connected destination drive or directory.
  5. Confirm the move and keep the Xbox app open until it reports completion. Avoid disconnecting either drive during the operation.
  6. If the game has damaged or missing files and Repair is offered, use that command and wait for validation or replacement to finish.
  7. Launch the game from the Xbox app after the operation. If it does not start, return to the same Manage screen and check whether repair is available.

Move and repair are separate actions. A move changes the supported installation location; repair checks or restores files without being a general-purpose relocation command. The options shown are determined by the game and the app version.

Accessing local files

Some Xbox app releases have included an option to access local game files from the management interface. File visibility and modding support are not universal, however. Only use files exposed through the app’s own controls, and do not delete, rename, or replace managed files unless the game’s instructions specifically require it.

What “Flat File Install” means for moving games

Microsoft’s Flat File Install documentation describes a supported model in which a game is assigned to a directory and can be moved across drives through the Xbox app. The documented feature has an important structural limit: one folder per drive for this feature. Plan the destination before moving several titles, especially if you want separate top-level folders for different libraries.

Applying the documented workflow

  1. Choose a connected destination drive and a directory that you will keep available to Windows.
  2. Use the Xbox app’s installation or Manage interface to select that directory, when the title exposes the Flat File Install-compatible controls.
  3. Start the move from the app rather than copying the folder in File Explorer.
  4. Wait for the app to complete its bookkeeping and validation.
  5. Keep the same directory available for later launches, updates, and repairs.

The one-folder-per-drive limit is a feature constraint, not a recommendation to merge unrelated game files. If the app refuses a second directory on the same drive, choose the existing supported folder or use another drive that the app recognizes.

Common problems and the safest fixes

The destination drive is missing from Windows settings

  • Reconnect the drive and wait for it to appear in File Explorer.
  • Return to Where new content is saved on Windows 11 or Change where new content is saved on Windows 10.
  • If it still is not listed, Windows is not presenting it as an available destination; resolve that drive-recognition issue before starting an installation.

Changing a drive letter or disconnecting removable storage after installation can leave an app unable to find its files. Keep the drive connected and consistently available for games stored there.

The Xbox app offers no Move button

That usually means the title does not expose the supported move workflow in the current app experience. Check the game’s Manage menu once, but do not force the move by copying a managed folder manually. If the option remains absent, reinstalling to the desired location may be the supported alternative, subject to the game’s own license and save-data behavior.

  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.

The game installed on the wrong drive

  1. Open the installed game’s Manage menu and check for Move.
  2. If Move is available, use it and wait for completion.
  3. If Move is unavailable, change the Windows default for future installs and use the app’s location selector for a new installation.
  4. Do not delete the original files until the app confirms a successful move or you have verified that your saves and installation can be restored.

Repair is unavailable or fails

Repair is not guaranteed for every game. If the command is absent, the title may not support it. If it fails, record the exact message, keep the destination drive connected, and use the app’s normal reinstall path rather than deleting folders by hand. A manual deletion can remove files the app still expects to manage.

You want to move several games to separate folders on one drive

Flat File Install documentation describes a one-folder-per-drive limit for that feature. The app may therefore reject a new top-level folder on a drive that already has the supported folder. Use the existing folder or a different recognized drive instead of creating multiple managed roots.

The app can see the drive, but the game cannot launch after a move

  • Confirm that the destination drive is connected and available under the same Windows installation.
  • Open the game’s Manage menu and run Repair if the option is present.
  • Launch from the Xbox app so it can resolve the managed location.
  • If the title still fails and no supported repair is available, reinstall through the app rather than restoring files with an untracked copy operation.

Using an external SSD for more game capacity

A portable external SSD can be an optional way to add capacity when an internal drive is full. The Xbox app must recognize the drive, and support varies by title and installation method. No particular model is universally guaranteed, and an external drive is not a workaround for a game that lacks Xbox app move support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Connect the SSD before opening the Windows Storage page or beginning the Xbox app install.
  • Verify that Windows assigns it a usable drive entry.
  • Choose it only when the Xbox app or Windows presents it as an available destination.
  • Keep it connected whenever you want to update or launch games stored there.
  • Use the Xbox app’s Move or Repair controls for supported titles; do not treat the SSD as permission to relocate managed folders manually.

Important limits and historical context

Xbox Wire’s January 19, 2022 release notes described install-location selection, local-file access, and additional management capabilities as preview features at that time. That announcement explains why older guides may show labels or menus that no longer match the current app. It is evidence that the workflow was introduced, not a guarantee that every 2026 installation has identical controls.

Microsoft’s current Windows Support guidance still documents the Storage paths for changing where new content is saved. Microsoft Learn’s Flat File Install overview documents directory selection and supported cross-drive moves through the Xbox app. Neither source establishes one universal current app build, one fixed folder path, or title-by-title eligibility for Move, Repair, or local-file access.

Before you change a location: a practical checklist

  • Identify whether you are changing a future default or moving an existing game.
  • Connect the destination drive and confirm Windows recognizes it.
  • Check the Xbox app’s game-specific install or Manage controls before touching files.
  • Use Move or Repair only when the app offers the command for that title.
  • Respect the Flat File Install one-folder-per-drive limit.
  • Keep removable storage connected for updates and launches.
  • Do not manually drag, rename, or delete managed game folders as a universal fix.
  • Verify the game launches from the Xbox app after any supported move or repair.

Bottom line

Set Where new content is saved in Windows 11, or Change where new content is saved in Windows 10, when you want a Windows-wide default for future content. For a particular Xbox PC game, choose a destination during installation or open its Manage menu to use Move, Repair, or file controls when the title supports them. The Xbox app is the supported path for managed-game moves; changing a Windows default or copying folders manually will not reliably relocate an existing library.
