To allow an anime-style game on a child’s Xbox account, check that game’s actual rating first, then either raise the child’s permitted age in the Xbox Family Settings app or allow only that individual title. On the console, open Settings > Privacy and online safety > select a family member > Content restrictions. Anime is an art style, not an age category, so the title’s rating and content descriptors—not its appearance or country of origin—should determine the decision.
If you want a narrow exception, use the Family Settings app’s individual-game control instead of changing the general age threshold. That leaves other games, films, television and music governed by the existing rule.
What Xbox’s age setting controls
Xbox content restrictions use an age scale based on ESRB information and other content-rating systems. The setting is broader than games: the console guide describes it as applying to games, movies, TV and music. Raising the permitted age can therefore open other content in those categories, not just the anime game you have in mind.
ESRB describes the purpose of the setting this way: “This setting will block potentially inappropriate games based on the ESRB rating information.” The practical implication is that Xbox evaluates the rating attached to a title. It does not classify a game because it uses anime-inspired character designs, Japanese voice acting, a manga-like story or another visual style.

A web filter is a different control. Microsoft’s Xbox One guidance for filtering inappropriate websites and searches concerns browser results and web pages; it is not the game-age setting described here.
Check the exact game before changing access
Do not make a decision from a screenshot, trailer or the word “anime” in a description. Find the exact edition and title in the Xbox Store or in the ESRB game-ratings search, then read both the rating category and every listed content descriptor.
- Identify the precise title. Confirm the game name, edition and platform listing. Deluxe editions, bundles or separately listed releases can have different store entries.
- Record the rating category. Use the category shown for that listing rather than assuming that games in the same genre share a rating.
- Read the descriptors. Descriptors explain why the rating was assigned and point to themes such as language, violence or other content. When ESRB places “Mild” before a descriptor, it indicates lower frequency, intensity or severity than an unqualified version of that descriptor.
- Compare the result with your household rule. Decide whether the title fits the child’s permitted age, whether you are comfortable with its specific descriptors and whether you want a one-title exception or a broader change.
The available guidance does not identify a particular anime game, so no title can be declared suitable for a particular age without checking its own current listing.

Option 1: Change the setting in the Xbox Family Settings app
The app is the clearest route when you manage several children or want to allow one title without changing every content category. ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls guide gives this sequence.
- Open the Xbox Family Settings app and select the child under Your Family.
- Select Content Restrictions.
- Make sure Filter Inappropriate Content is turned on. This keeps the age-based filter active while you choose the permitted level.
- Select Allow Content Suitable for Age.
- Set the permitted age to the level that covers the game’s rating, after considering its descriptors and your family’s rule.
That change is a general threshold. It can affect every game, movie, TV program and music item covered by the account’s content restrictions, so review the scope before saving a higher level.
Allow only one game in the app
ESRB says the Family Settings app can allow or block individual game titles regardless of their age rating. Use this when you have reviewed one game and want an exception rather than a new rule for all content.

- Open the child’s profile under Your Family.
- Go to Content Restrictions.
- Use the individual-title control to find the exact game.
- Choose the option to allow that title, or leave it blocked if your review changes your mind.
- Check the child’s console account after the setting is saved and have the child start the game again.
An individual-title decision is narrower than raising the age threshold, but it should still be based on the title’s current rating and descriptors. The cited guide does not establish that a title exception overrides every other account, store, regional or sign-in requirement, so treat those as separate checks if the game remains unavailable.
Option 2: Change content restrictions on the Xbox console
When you are already at the console, use the family member’s privacy and safety settings:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy and online safety.
- Select the relevant family member.
- Open Content restrictions.
- Choose the age-based content level that matches your decision, or review the available title controls shown for that family member.
The ESRB guide covers Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controls, but menu labels can change with console software updates. If a label is worded slightly differently, stay within the selected family member’s Content restrictions area rather than changing unrelated privacy or web settings.

Because this console path governs more than games, verify the effect on films, television and music before you leave the page. If your intention is to approve one anime game while keeping the existing limits elsewhere, the app’s individual-title control is the better fit when it is available.
Choose the narrowest setting that matches your decision

How to use the rating and descriptors in a real decision
Start with the category shown for the game, then use the descriptors to understand the reason for that category. A category alone does not tell you which themes or scenes led to the rating. Conversely, a familiar anime franchise does not guarantee a particular category: two games with similar visual styles can carry different ratings.

“Anime game” can describe a role-playing game, fighting game, visual novel, puzzle game or a title aimed at very different audiences. The label says something about presentation or influence, not the amount of violence, language, sexual content, gambling-related material or other descriptors in the specific release. Use the store listing or ESRB search result for the title your child will actually launch.

Read qualifiers such as “Mild” carefully
ESRB explains that when “Mild” precedes a descriptor, the descriptor appears with lower frequency, intensity or severity. That qualifier is useful context, but it does not erase the descriptor. Consider the whole set of descriptors and your child’s maturity rather than treating one word as an automatic approval.
Account for the listing you are buying or downloading
Check the rating on the current Xbox Store listing, not an old review or a rating remembered from another platform. If several editions appear, verify which one is installed on the child’s account before applying an exception.
Troubleshoot a game that is still blocked
The age level was raised, but access did not change
- Return to the child’s profile and confirm that the permitted age was saved under Content Restrictions, not only in a different privacy or web-filter page.
- Confirm that Filter Inappropriate Content is configured as intended. The app’s age setting works within that content-filtering area.
- Check the exact game listing and rating again. A similarly named edition may be the one being blocked.
- Sign out and back in on the child’s Xbox account, then try the title again. If the restriction persists, check for separate store, regional or sign-in requirements; the parental-controls guide does not say that an age exception bypasses those requirements.
Raising the threshold allowed more than intended
That result is consistent with a general age change: the console setting covers games, movies, TV and music, not a single game. Move back to the prior threshold and use the Family Settings app’s individual-title control if your goal is one exception.

Console software versions can change labels. Look for the same hierarchy: Settings, then Privacy and online safety, the family member, and finally Content restrictions. On a managed device, make sure you are editing the child’s profile rather than your own account.
The child can browse blocked websites
Review the web-filter setting separately. Website and search filtering on Xbox One is not the same mechanism as the game-age restriction, so changing one does not necessarily change the other.
A parent’s checklist before approving an anime game
- Have you checked the exact Xbox Store or ESRB listing for the title and edition?
- Have you read the rating category and all descriptors, including any “Mild” qualifier?
- Do you want a broad age-rule change or only a one-title exception?
- If changing the broad rule, are you comfortable with the effect on movies, TV and music as well as games?
- Did you edit the correct child under Your Family or the correct family member on the console?
- If access still fails, have you considered separate account, store, regional or sign-in requirements rather than repeatedly raising the age limit?
What to remember
The reliable way to allow an anime game is to treat “anime” as a style and the rating as the control signal. Check the title’s current rating and descriptors, then choose the least broad setting that meets your goal: an age threshold for a general rule or an individual-title allowance in the Family Settings app for a specific exception. The console route is available through Settings > Privacy and online safety > family member > Content restrictions, but its age setting reaches beyond games.
