“Change the character model” can mean four different things in World of Warcraft: improve rendering quality, select a graphics API, rearrange the HUD, or alter the character’s appearance. Those controls are separate. The correct steps depend on whether you play retail WoW, a Classic client, or World of Warcraft: Forever.
Use the guide below to identify the change you actually want, then follow only the matching procedure. Blizzard has confirmed an SD/HD player-character toggle for WoW: Forever; that announcement does not establish the same control in retail WoW or every Classic client.
First identify what you want to change
World of Warcraft uses different systems for image quality, interface layout, character appearance and model assets. Changing one does not change the others.

Change general graphics quality
For ordinary visual changes, open the game’s graphics options from the main menu and adjust the quality controls available in your client. Labels and the number of controls can vary by edition and patch, so read the label beside each control rather than assuming that a setting changes the character model specifically.

Use the graphics page for rendering changes
- Enter the character or world you want to test, then open the Main Menu.
- Choose Options, followed by Graphics.
- Change the quality controls that match your goal, such as the overall quality preset or individual rendering options shown by your client.
- Apply or confirm the change using the control displayed by the client. The available evidence does not establish a universal restart requirement for general graphics changes, so do not assume that a restart is mandatory unless the game tells you one is required.
- Inspect the character, environment and interface after the change. If only the HUD moved or changed size, you changed an interface option rather than the model.
No sourced benchmark establishes a particular frame-rate increase, image-quality percentage or best preset. Choose based on what you can see and on the performance you need from your own hardware.
When a setting appears to do nothing
- Confirm that you changed a graphics control, not an Edit Mode layout control.
- Check whether the option is limited to a particular client edition or character type.
- Return to the graphics page and verify the value was saved after leaving the menu.
- Test in the same location and camera angle before and after the change; moving to a different area can make a visual difference that is unrelated to the setting.
Change the Graphics API (DirectX 11 or DirectX 12)
The Graphics API determines the rendering interface used by the client. It is a technical graphics option, not a way to switch a character’s race, body, face or model asset.
Use the in-game menu
- Open the Main Menu.
- Select Options.
- Open Graphics, then Advanced.
- Find Graphics API and select the API offered by your client.
- Confirm the change using the on-screen apply or confirmation control.
That is Blizzard Support’s documented route for the API setting. It does not document a universal route for an SD/HD character-model switch.

Set the API through Battle.net launch arguments
Blizzard Support also describes using Battle.net’s additional command-line arguments. In the Battle.net launcher, open the settings for the WoW game installation, enable the field for additional command-line arguments, and enter one of these flags:
-d3d11to request DirectX 11.-d3d12to request DirectX 12.
Use one API flag at a time. If the client does not start correctly or behaves unexpectedly after adding a flag, remove the argument and return to the in-game Graphics API control. The available documentation does not establish that either API is universally faster or better on every system.
Change the HUD without changing the character model
If by “model” you mean the layout of action bars, unit frames, minimap or other on-screen elements, use Edit Mode. Blizzard introduced Edit Mode with the Dragonflight interface redesign so players could move and personalise interface components.

Move and save interface elements
- Open the game’s interface menu and choose Edit Mode.
- Select the layout element you want to adjust.
- Drag it to the desired position and use the available element controls to personalise it.
- Save the layout when you are satisfied.
- Use the layout options to copy or share it if you need the same arrangement on another character or setup.
Edit Mode changes the interface layer. It cannot turn a low-detail character into a high-detail one, replace a race, or select an SD/HD player asset.
The cited Blizzard announcement accompanied the Dragonflight redesign. Blizzard can change menu names and locations in later patches, so use the labels displayed by your installed client if they differ from the names above.
Change a character’s appearance
Appearance customisation is a character choice, not a rendering-quality setting. Blizzard’s character-creation UI material describes appearance options such as the choices presented when creating a character. The exact list depends on the race, gender presentation and client version.

Use the options offered by the character system
- At character creation, choose the appearance controls presented by the client before entering the world.
- For an existing character, use whatever appearance-customisation feature your edition currently provides. The available material does not establish one universal menu path for every live client, so do not rely on a path from another edition.
- Changing an appearance choice does not change the game’s Graphics API, texture quality or HUD layout.
Understand what a Race Change does
Blizzard’s Race Change Information and Restrictions article describes Race Change as a paid character service for changing a character’s race. It is not required to change graphics quality, select a Graphics API or improve model rendering. The cited support information also distinguishes race from faction; do not treat a Race Change as a faction-change instruction.
Before purchasing any character service, read the current restrictions and eligibility rules shown by Blizzard. A paid service is relevant only when the character identity itself must change, not when the problem is blurry, missing or low-detail graphics.

Blizzard announced an SD/HD toggle for player characters in World of Warcraft: Forever, focused on the original WoW races. This is the only client-specific model-quality switch established by the supplied official material.

What the announcement confirms
- The feature is for player-character model assets, rather than a general DirectX or HUD option.
- It is tied to WoW: Forever; the announcement does not establish the same toggle in retail WoW or every Classic client.
- The announcement does not provide the current in-game menu path. Therefore, a reliable universal sequence such as “open this menu, choose that button” cannot be stated from the published information.
- SD Skyborne player characters and SD Druid forms were announced as in development for early 2027. That is a plan, not a guarantee that the update will be available on a particular date or patch.
How to avoid applying the feature to the wrong edition
- Check the client name in the Battle.net launcher before looking for an SD/HD option.
- If you are playing WoW: Forever, inspect the character, graphics and appearance-related menus after the feature is available. Use the label shown by your installed build because the announcement does not specify a permanent menu location.
- If you are playing retail WoW or another Classic client and cannot find an SD/HD control, do not assume it is hidden. The announcement does not promise an equivalent option for those clients.
- For a missing Skyborne or Druid SD option, check whether the planned early-2027 update has actually shipped in your client rather than treating the announcement as a current release notice.
Adjust the camera field of view carefully
Blizzard’s Dragonflight accessibility announcement described a camera field-of-view control under Options > System > Graphics. That route comes from an earlier version, and the page is not a guarantee that current retail or Classic menus use exactly the same labels.
- Open Options and look under System and Graphics for a field-of-view control.
- If your client presents the control, adjust it gradually while watching the scene and character at the same camera distance.
- If the control is absent, do not substitute a Race Change, Edit Mode or Graphics API change; those settings solve different problems.
Field of view changes the camera’s visible area. It does not replace the character’s model or convert an SD asset to an HD asset.
Choose the correct fix for common symptoms

What requires a purchase, and what does not
The menu changes described here require no physical product. A monitor, graphics card, mouse or printed guide is not required to open WoW’s settings, change the API, edit the HUD or use a model toggle when the client provides one.

Edition and version checklist
- Retail WoW: Use the current graphics and interface menus in your installed build. The WoW: Forever SD/HD announcement does not establish a retail toggle.
- Classic: Check the exact Classic client. The available announcement does not establish a universal SD/HD control across Classic versions.
- WoW: Forever: The announced SD/HD player-character feature applies here, with original WoW races as its focus. The current menu path remains unspecified in the announcement.
- Dragonflight-era instructions: Edit Mode and the field-of-view route may have different labels after later updates. Confirm what your client displays.
- Battle.net arguments: Use only one of
-d3d11or-d3d12when testing the API, and remove the argument if it prevents normal startup.
A safe order for testing changes
- Write down the symptom in plain language: image quality, API, HUD position, appearance, model asset or camera view.
- Confirm the WoW edition and client shown in Battle.net.
- Change one setting in the matching category.
- Apply the setting and inspect the same character and scene.
- If the result is not what you expected, undo that one change before testing another category.
- For an SD/HD question, verify client availability first; do not infer support from a different WoW edition.
This order prevents a common mistake: using a paid character service or a technical rendering option to solve an interface or model-asset question.
The Bottom Line
Graphics quality, Graphics API, HUD layout, character appearance and SD/HD model assets are separate systems. Use Options > Graphics > Advanced > Graphics API or the documented Battle.net flags only for API changes; use Edit Mode for the HUD; use character customisation or Race Change only for appearance or race; and treat the SD/HD switch as a WoW: Forever-specific feature unless your own client explicitly documents otherwise.
