If a USB device keeps disconnecting, stops working after sleep, or becomes unresponsive after sitting idle, test Windows USB selective suspend. The setting is normally enabled, and Microsoft strongly recommends leaving it enabled because it reduces power use. Change it only as a reversible troubleshooting step, test the same failure scenario, and restore the original value if there is no improvement.
What Windows USB power management controls
USB selective suspend allows Windows to power down an idle USB device or port while the computer itself remains on. Microsoft describes it as the ability to “power down and later resume an idle USB device while the computer to which it is attached remains in the working state (S0).” A hub can suspend one port without interrupting devices connected to other ports.
On a laptop, this behavior can reduce battery drain while the computer is running. On a desktop, it can reduce unnecessary USB power use. The trade-off is that a device, hub, or driver that does not resume correctly may appear to disconnect, fail to respond, or require reconnection after sleep or idle time.
Microsoft states that selective suspend is enabled by default and says, “Microsoft strongly recommends not disabling selective suspend.” There is no dependable, published consumer figure for how much battery life the setting saves, and changing it is not guaranteed to fix a particular device. Treat the change as a controlled test rather than a permanent performance setting.

Before changing the setting
- Identify the exact symptom: a disconnect during idle, a failure after sleep or hibernate, or a device that stops responding while the PC remains awake.
- Record whether the failure occurs on On battery, Plugged in, or both. Windows stores separate values for those states.
- Use the same USB device, physical port, workload, and power state before and after the change. Otherwise you cannot tell whether the setting made a difference.
- Keep the original values visible or write them down so you can undo the test.
- Do not start with a registry edit. The documented user-facing route is in Control Panel, and the option may be hidden or unavailable on some computers.
If the issue began immediately after a driver, firmware, Windows, or hardware change, note that timing. Selective suspend is only one possible cause; a damaged cable, loose connector, faulty hub, or device-specific driver can produce similar symptoms.
How to change USB selective suspend in Control Panel
The following path is the commonly documented Control Panel route. Menu names and the presence of the USB section vary by Windows build, power-plan configuration, and PC manufacturer.
- Open Control Panel. You can search for “Control Panel” from the Start menu.
- Select System and Security, then Power Options.
- Find the power plan marked as active and select Change plan settings.
- Select Change advanced power settings. A small Power Options dialog opens.
- Expand USB settings, then expand USB selective suspend setting.
- Choose the value for On battery and/or Plugged in. For a targeted test, change only the state in which the failure occurs.
- Select Apply, then OK to close the dialogs.
On systems that expose the option, the value is generally an enabled or disabled choice rather than a timer. If you do not see USB settings or USB selective suspend setting, do not assume that a command or registry change is required. Some manufacturers and Windows configurations remove or hide this control.
Which value should you change?
| Observed failure | First test | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Disconnects only when running on battery | Change On battery only | Limits the test to the power state that reproduces the problem. |
| Disconnects only while the charger is connected | Change Plugged in only | Avoids changing battery behavior unnecessarily. |
| Fails in both states | Test one state, then the other | Separate results show whether the failure is power-state specific. |
| Failure occurs after sleep or hibernate | Test the state used when the PC entered sleep | The resume path, rather than ordinary idle operation, may be the trigger. |
For a troubleshooting test, disable selective suspend in the relevant state, apply the change, and reproduce the original scenario. If the device behaves normally, repeat the test once to make sure the result is consistent. If nothing changes, re-enable the original value before trying another cause.

How to test and restore the original behavior
A useful test changes one variable at a time. Connect the affected device directly to the same port, use the same application or workload, and leave the computer idle for approximately the period that previously caused the failure. If the issue involved sleep, use the same sleep or hibernate action and wake the PC in the same way.
- Apply the selective-suspend change and restart only if Windows requests it; otherwise begin the same reproduction test immediately.
- Watch for the original symptom: a disconnect sound, a missing drive, an unresponsive keyboard or mouse, a failed transfer, or a device that does not return after wake.
- Repeat the scenario at least once. A single successful wake does not establish that the setting fixed the problem.
- If the failure remains, restore the original enabled value and investigate drivers, firmware, cables, hubs, and sleep-resume behavior.
- If disabling the feature consistently prevents the failure, decide whether the extra power use is acceptable. On a battery-powered PC, re-enable selective suspend unless the device is essential and the trade-off is understood.
Disabling the feature can affect USB devices broadly. A legacy Microsoft support article warns that disabling selective suspend affects all USB host-controller drivers and that connected USB devices may continue using power. It is therefore not a per-device fix when changed in the power plan.
Device-level setting: “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”
Some devices expose a separate power checkbox in Device Manager. The wording may be Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. This is different from changing the active power plan’s USB selective-suspend value: it applies to the particular device or adapter whose Properties page contains the checkbox.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the affected hardware, such as Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or another device-specific category.
- Right-click the suspected device and select Properties.
- If a Power Management tab is present, review the checkbox labeled Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Clear the checkbox only as a test, select OK, and reproduce the same failure.
Not every device has a Power Management tab, and the checkbox is not available on every Windows edition, driver, or hardware combination. Microsoft currently presents this type of step in Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance. A similar USB Root Hub workaround appears in Microsoft documentation for a legacy Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 resume problem. That older guidance should not be treated as a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 fix.

If the tab or checkbox is missing, do not force it through an undocumented registry modification. Check the device or PC manufacturer’s current driver guidance, and continue with the broader troubleshooting steps below.
Power-plan setting versus device setting
| Characteristic | USB selective suspend in Power Options | Device Power Management checkbox |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Can affect USB behavior across the active power plan and its connected devices. | Applies only to a device whose Properties page exposes the control. |
| Location | Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > USB settings. | Device Manager > device Properties > Power Management. |
| Separate battery and AC values | Yes: On battery and Plugged in can differ. | Not necessarily; the available controls depend on the driver. |
| Availability | May be hidden or unavailable on some PCs and plans. | Only appears when the device and driver provide it. |
| Power impact | Disabling can increase USB power use across the plan. | May change power behavior for that device, but the exact effect depends on its driver. |
| Evidence for current Windows | Community guidance documents the route; Microsoft recommends leaving selective suspend enabled. | Current support guidance uses the checkbox for some Bluetooth cases; the cited USB Root Hub procedure is legacy. |
Use the plan-level setting when the symptom follows idle or power-state transitions across more than one USB device. Use a device-level checkbox only when the affected device exposes it and the symptom clearly follows that device.
What to do when a USB device keeps disconnecting
Disconnects while the computer is awake
First test whether the failure occurs only after inactivity. If it does, selective suspend is a plausible trigger, so change only the matching battery or plugged-in value and retest. If the failure occurs during active transfers or movement of the cable, power management is less likely than a cable, connector, hub, driver, or device fault. Try the same device directly in the PC rather than through a hub, but keep the test conditions consistent.
Stops working after sleep or hibernate
After the PC wakes, disconnect and reconnect the device. Microsoft also recommends restarting the PC when a device misbehaves after resume. If reconnecting restores operation every time, record that pattern before changing settings; it points to a resume or driver interaction rather than a simple idle timeout.

You can then test selective suspend in the power state used before sleep. If disabling it does not change the resume behavior, restore the original value and look for updated chipset, USB-controller, Bluetooth, or device firmware supplied for your exact PC model.
Only one device is affected
Check whether that device has a Power Management tab and the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power checkbox. Because the control is driver-dependent, its absence is normal. Do not infer that every USB device has an equivalent checkbox.
Several devices fail together
When multiple devices on the same hub or controller stop responding, a plan-level setting, hub power state, controller driver, or physical connection is more likely than an individual device checkbox. Test a different built-in port and then a direct connection, noting whether all affected devices follow the same controller or hub.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why disabling selective suspend may not fix the problem
- The setting was changed for the wrong state. A battery-only change cannot explain a failure that occurs only while plugged in.
- The option is not the cause. USB failures can arise from drivers, firmware, cables, ports, hubs, hardware defects, or resume bugs.
- The device does not honor the transition correctly. Selective suspend is coordinated by Windows, the USB controller, the hub, and the device driver; changing one setting cannot repair incompatible firmware.
- The failure is caused by sleep resume rather than idle suspend. The computer may have entered a different low-power state, so reconnecting or restarting is a more relevant immediate test.
- The change was not applied to the active plan. Windows can have several plans, but the advanced settings dialog opened from an inactive plan will not govern the plan currently in use.
If the setting is missing, the labels differ, or the behavior does not match these steps, use the documentation for the exact Windows build and PC model. Manufacturer power utilities can also alter which controls are exposed, so a generic instruction may not map to every computer.

Do not confuse USB power management with Windows power mode
Windows’ overall power-mode choices and USB selective suspend are separate controls. Microsoft describes Windows 10 and Windows 11 power modes such as battery efficiency, balanced, and performance; which choices appear depends on the PC and its manufacturer. Changing the overall mode does not directly select the USB selective-suspend value, and changing USB selective suspend does not change the computer’s overall mode.
Use the power-mode control when you want a broad system trade-off between efficiency and performance. Use the USB setting when you are testing a reproducible USB idle or resume symptom. Keeping those decisions separate makes it easier to identify what changed.
Practical decision guide
| Your situation | Recommended action | Expected trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| No USB problem; you want normal battery behavior | Leave selective suspend enabled. | Retains Microsoft’s recommended default behavior. |
| One device fails after idle on battery | Test disabling On battery only, then restore it if ineffective. | May increase battery use while that plan value is disabled. |
| One device fails after idle while plugged in | Test disabling Plugged in only. | May increase USB power use on AC power. |
| Several USB devices fail after idle | Test the plan-level setting, then inspect the hub/controller and drivers. | The plan-level change can affect many devices. |
| Device fails after sleep or hibernate | Reconnect or restart first; then test the relevant plan state. | A selective-suspend change may not affect a resume-specific fault. |
| Device Manager offers a Power Management tab | Test the device-level checkbox separately from the plan setting. | Effect is limited to that device but depends on its driver. |
| No USB setting or Power Management tab | Do not force a registry workaround; use exact PC/device support documentation. | Availability is controlled by Windows, the active plan, and drivers. |
Safe rollback checklist
- Return USB selective suspend setting to its original enabled or disabled value for both On battery and Plugged in.
- If you cleared a device’s Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power checkbox, restore its previous state.
- Reconnect the device and verify that ordinary operation still works.
- Check battery behavior after the PC has been idle long enough for the original symptom to occur.
- Keep a note of the setting, power state, device, port, and result so later driver or firmware changes can be evaluated accurately.
The safest general configuration is the Windows default: leave selective suspend enabled and change it only long enough to test a specific, repeatable USB problem. A successful test can justify a narrowly scoped exception, but a setting that does not change the symptom should be returned to its original value.
