To change Website Typo Protection in Microsoft Edge, open edge://settings/privacy/security, find Website Typo Protection, and switch it on or off. If the control is unavailable or says it is managed, an organization’s Edge policy may be controlling it.
What Website Typo Protection does
Website Typo Protection warns when Edge thinks you may have mistyped a common web address and could be heading to a malicious lookalike site. Microsoft describes typosquatting as registering a common misspelling of another organization’s domain to divert visitors; its example is tailspintoy.com instead of tailspintoys.com. The warning is a prompt about a possible risk, not a guarantee that Edge will detect every typo or malicious site. Microsoft Support explains the checker.
Turn Website Typo Protection on or off
- Open Microsoft Edge and enter
edge://settings/privacy/securityin the address bar, then press Enter. This opens the security settings directly. Microsoft documents the setting and its policy behavior. - Find Website Typo Protection.
- Switch the setting on to receive the warning, or off to stop using this checker.
If the option is not visible, make sure you are using Edge and have opened the address exactly as shown. On a managed device, the setting may be controlled by your organization.
Why the setting may be managed
On an unmanaged installation, Microsoft says the feature is on by default when its policy is not configured, and users can choose whether to use it. An administrator can configure the TyposquattingCheckerEnabled policy to turn it on or off. If Edge marks the setting as managed, contact your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to override the policy.

Microsoft lists policy support for Windows and macOS starting with Edge 96, and Android starting with Edge 124; iOS is listed as unsupported for this policy. Those are policy-support versions and do not establish that the consumer settings interface is identical on every platform. See Microsoft’s policy documentation.

Organizations can also control whether users may dismiss the warning. The PreventTyposquattingPromptOverride policy blocks users from ignoring it when enabled; Microsoft says it takes effect only when typo protection is enabled or not explicitly disabled. The TyposquattingAllowListDomains policy can exempt trusted domains from warnings in supported managed environments. Its availability depends on device-management or domain-join conditions. Organizations using Microsoft Defender for Endpoint must manage allowlists and blocklists in the Defender portal instead. Details and conditions are in Microsoft’s allow-list policy documentation.
