On Android, voice typing is controlled from your active keyboard, not from one universal system switch. Open a text field, open Gboard Settings, and use Voice typing to enable or disable dictation. To dictate, tap the keyboard microphone. To change the language, add or select a Gboard language separately from changing Android’s device language. Privacy is also split among microphone permission, Gboard personalization, learned-data deletion, and Assistant speech-recognition settings.

Standard Gboard talk-to-text sends your voice to Google for transcription. Eligible Pixel phones offer a different Advanced voice typing mode that keeps spoken text on the device except when you use Fix it or detailed editing commands. The controls and labels can vary slightly by Android and Gboard version.

Before you change anything

Keep two language lists in mind. Gboard’s list controls the keyboard and the language selected for a dictation session. Android’s device-language list controls system menus and the primary language that some apps use. They can contain the same languages, but changing one does not automatically change the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also identify which keyboard is active. The instructions below use Gboard. If another keyboard appears when you tap a text field, its microphone and language controls will be different. You can still install or select Gboard through Android’s keyboard settings, but the exact menu names depend on the phone maker and Android release.

Open Gboard’s voice-typing settings

  1. Open any app with a text field, such as Messages, Keep, a browser form, or an email composer.
  2. Tap the field so Gboard appears.
  3. Tap the keyboard’s Settings control. Depending on your layout, it may be a gear icon in the toolbar.
  4. If the gear is not visible, open the keyboard’s features menu, tap More, and then choose Settings.
  5. Open Voice typing.
  6. Turn voice typing on or off. On eligible Pixel devices, this area can also include Faster voice typing and Advanced voice typing.

Google documents this keyboard-based route because Android manufacturers place Gboard in different Settings-app locations. A single Settings path therefore may not exist on every phone. If tapping the field does not show Gboard at all, switch to Gboard first, then repeat these steps.

Start and stop dictation

Standard Gboard talk-to-text

  1. Tap a text field to display Gboard.
  2. Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard.
  3. Wait for the listening prompt, then speak naturally. Your words appear as text in the field.
  4. Tap the microphone again or close the keyboard when you are finished.

The insertion point matters: dictated words are placed wherever the cursor is located. Tap a different part of an existing message before starting if you want to insert text there rather than append it. Review the result before sending, especially when the text contains names, numbers, addresses, abbreviations, or punctuation.

What to expect while speaking

Voice commands and punctuation behavior can differ by language and by the dictation mode your device supports. Speak after the listening indicator appears, and pause briefly when you need a clear word boundary. If you stop and the keyboard closes or the microphone indicator ends, tap the microphone again for a new session.

If the microphone icon is absent, first check that Voice typing is enabled and that Gboard has microphone permission. A missing icon can also result from a different keyboard being active.

Change the language used by Gboard

Gboard’s active language determines the keyboard layout and the language used for ordinary voice typing. Adding a language does not automatically change Android’s system language, and adding several languages does not mean Gboard will always detect the one you intend. Select the language you are about to speak.

Add a keyboard language

  1. Open Gboard Settings from an active text field.
  2. Tap Languages.
  3. Tap Add keyboard (the wording can vary).
  4. Select the language and, if offered, choose a regional variant and keyboard layout.
  5. Confirm with Done.

Regional variants can change the layout and vocabulary available to the keyboard. Choose the variant that best matches the language you normally write. You can keep more than one language installed and switch between them without changing the phone’s menus.

Switch between installed languages

With Gboard visible, tap the globe key to cycle through installed languages. You can also touch and hold the space bar and select the desired language. The currently selected language controls the keyboard and regular talk-to-text session.

If you cannot see a globe key, it may be hidden by your current layout. The space-bar press-and-hold picker is the alternative documented route. If neither method shows the language you added, return to Gboard’s Languages page and confirm that the language was saved.

Standard Gboard talk-to-text supports more languages than the advanced Pixel mode, but Google warns that voice typing does not work with every language. If recognition is poor, verify that the selected keyboard language matches the language you are speaking rather than relying only on automatic detection.

Change Android’s primary device language

Changing the device language affects system menus and supported apps; it is separate from selecting a Gboard language.

  1. Open Android Settings.
  2. Go to System > Languages & input > Languages.
  3. Choose Add a language if the language is not listed.
  4. Add the language, then move it to the top of the list or otherwise set it as primary using the controls shown on your version of Android.

Some manufacturers place Languages & input directly in Settings rather than under System. The exact labels and order depend on the Android release and manufacturer interface. If a menu is not in the stated location, use Settings search for “Languages” and look for the device-language list rather than Gboard’s separate list.

Gboard language versus device language

Setting What it changes Where to change it
Gboard language Keyboard layout, active input language, and the language used for a normal dictation session Gboard Settings > Languages, then the globe key or space-bar language picker
Android primary language System menus and the device-wide language order used by Android and apps that follow it Settings > System > Languages & input > Languages (location may vary)

For Pixel Advanced voice typing, Google requires the primary Gboard language and the primary device language to match. A secondary keyboard language can be useful for ordinary typing but will not satisfy that requirement if another language remains primary. Matching only the languages somewhere in each list is not enough; the same language must be first or otherwise designated primary in both places.

Use Pixel Advanced voice typing when eligible

Advanced voice typing is a separate Pixel feature, not a faster name for all Gboard dictation. Google lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish for this mode. Availability depends on the Pixel model, Android and Gboard versions, language configuration, and required system updates.

Requirements to check

  • An eligible Pixel device with the Advanced voice typing option in Gboard’s Voice typing settings.
  • A supported language.
  • The same language set as primary in Gboard and in Android’s device-language settings.
  • Current Gboard and Android System Intelligence updates. After setting up a Pixel, required updates may take time to arrive.

The presence of a regular microphone icon does not prove that Advanced voice typing is available. Conversely, a missing Advanced option does not by itself indicate a broken microphone. Check eligibility, language matching, and updates before troubleshooting hardware.

Processing behavior

Google says that with Advanced voice typing, the text you speak stays on the device and is not sent to Google servers except when you use Fix it or detailed edits. When those editing features are used, Google says the voice-command transcript and the full text in the input field are sent to Google servers to process the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This statement applies to the Advanced voice typing feature described for eligible Pixel devices. It should not be generalized to standard Gboard talk-to-text or treated as a description of every Assistant voice setting.

Understand the privacy controls

There is no single privacy switch that governs every voice-related feature. Use the control that matches the data or behavior you want to change.

Microphone permission

Android must grant Gboard access to the microphone before dictation can hear you.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Gboard.
  3. Open Permissions.
  4. Tap Microphone.
  5. Select Allow only while using the app, or the equivalent option shown by your Android version.

Permission labels can differ slightly by manufacturer. If permission is denied, the microphone button may be unavailable or dictation may stop immediately. Granting permission lets Gboard access the microphone while it is being used; it does not, by itself, change Gboard’s personalization choice or the processing behavior described for standard and Advanced voice typing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gboard personalization and learned data

From Gboard, open Settings > Privacy. Under Improve Gboard and voice typing, Personalise for you controls whether transcripts of speech and typing are saved on the device to improve personalization.

The same Privacy area includes Delete learned words and data. Use it when you want to remove the words and other learned information Gboard has stored for personalization. Deleting learned data can reduce recognition of names, abbreviations, and phrases that Gboard previously adapted to. It does not turn off the microphone permission, disable Voice typing, or change Android’s primary language.

Where standard talk-to-text is processed

Google’s Gboard help states: “If you use Gboard’s talk-to-text feature, your voice is sent to Google for transcription.” Therefore, turning off personalization does not change the basic processing route for standard talk-to-text. Personalization and transcription are separate decisions: one concerns on-device learning and saved transcripts, while the other describes how ordinary talk-to-text is transcribed.

Assistant Personalized speech recognition

Google Assistant has a separate Personalized speech recognition control. Google says disabling that Assistant setting does not affect Gboard Assistant Voice Typing, Voice and Audio Activity, Voice Match, Personal Results, or the other named data settings. Do not treat it as a master switch for every voice feature on the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To control Gboard behavior, use Gboard’s own Voice typing and Privacy pages. To control Assistant’s speech-recognition personalization, use the Assistant setting itself; changing one does not automatically change the other.

Privacy controls at a glance

Control What it governs What it does not govern
Android microphone permission for Gboard Whether Gboard can access the microphone while in use Language selection, learned words, or Google’s standard transcription route
Gboard Personalise for you Whether speech and typing transcripts are saved on the device for personalization Whether standard talk-to-text sends voice to Google for transcription
Delete learned words and data Removal of Gboard’s learned personalization data Microphone access or Assistant settings
Assistant Personalized speech recognition Assistant’s speech-recognition personalization Gboard Assistant Voice Typing and the other separately named Assistant data settings
Pixel Advanced voice typing On-device handling of spoken text on eligible devices, with the stated editing exception Standard Gboard talk-to-text on other configurations

Standard versus Advanced voice typing

Characteristic Standard Gboard talk-to-text Pixel Advanced voice typing
Availability Available on supported Android configurations; language support is broad but not universal Limited to eligible Pixel devices, supported languages, and matching primary languages
How to start Tap the Gboard microphone in a text field Tap the Gboard microphone after enabling Advanced voice typing
Stated processing Google says voice is sent to Google for transcription Spoken text stays on the device except when using Fix it or detailed edits
Extra update dependency Gboard update may be relevant Gboard and Android System Intelligence may both need updates

The two modes can look similar while you are dictating, so the setting you enabled matters. If privacy is the deciding factor, verify that the Advanced option is actually present and enabled on an eligible Pixel; do not assume ordinary Gboard dictation has the same on-device behavior.

Troubleshoot voice typing that is missing or inaccurate

The microphone button is missing

  • Open Gboard Settings from a text field and confirm Voice typing is enabled.
  • Check Settings > Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone and grant access while Gboard is in use.
  • Confirm Gboard is the active keyboard in Android’s keyboard settings.
  • Update Gboard, then reopen the text field.
  • If the keyboard toolbar is customized, open the features menu and look for the microphone there rather than assuming it was removed.

Dictation hears nothing

  • Check that Android’s microphone permission was not revoked.
  • Make sure another app is not using or blocking the microphone.
  • Test the phone’s microphone in a recorder or call. If other apps also fail, the problem may be device-level rather than a Gboard setting.
  • Restart the device after granting permission or installing updates.

The wrong language is recognized

  1. Open Gboard’s language list and add the language you intend to speak.
  2. Switch to it with the globe key or by holding the space bar.
  3. For Advanced voice typing, set that language as primary in both Gboard and Android’s device-language list.
  4. Check whether the language is supported by the selected voice-typing mode.

Do not change the entire device language merely to change a single dictation session. Switching Gboard’s active language is usually the narrower change; changing Android’s primary language affects menus and other apps as well.

Advanced voice typing is unavailable

  • Verify that the phone is an eligible Pixel model and that the feature is offered in your region and software build.
  • Confirm one of the listed supported languages is primary in both locations.
  • Update Gboard and Android System Intelligence.
  • If the Pixel was recently set up, allow time for required updates to arrive.
  • Restart the phone after updates. Google also recommends checking connectivity for certain update-related problems.

Recognition is slow or inaccurate

  • Speak after the listening indicator appears and keep the phone’s microphone unobstructed.
  • Use the correct active keyboard language instead of leaving an unrelated language selected.
  • Review the text before sending, especially for proper names, addresses, numbers, and punctuation.
  • If the problem began after deleting learned data, understand that Gboard no longer has those personalized words available.
  • If the issue affects only one language, check that language’s support for the voice-typing mode before changing unrelated privacy settings.

Settings changed but behavior did not

Reopen the text field after changing Voice typing, permissions, languages, or updates. A keyboard that was already open may not immediately reflect every change. If Advanced voice typing still does not appear after matching primary languages and updating both components, the device or language may simply be outside the feature’s eligibility.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Open a text field and confirm Gboard appears.
  2. Enable Voice typing in Gboard Settings.
  3. Grant Gboard microphone permission under Android app permissions.
  4. Add the languages you actually speak and switch to the right one before dictating.
  5. If you use a Pixel Advanced voice typing feature, match the primary Gboard and device languages.
  6. Choose whether Personalise for you should save speech and typing transcripts on the device.
  7. Delete learned words and data from Gboard Privacy if you want to clear personalization data.
  8. Keep Gboard and, where required, Android System Intelligence updated.
  9. Restart after updates or permission changes, then test in a short text field before relying on dictation for a long message.

Why is the Gboard microphone missing?

Confirm Voice typing is enabled, Gboard is the active keyboard, and Android has granted Gboard microphone permission under Settings > Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone.

How do I change the language for voice typing?

Add the language under Gboard Settings > Languages, then switch to it with the globe key or by holding the space bar. This changes Gboard’s input language without changing Android’s menus.

Do I need to change Android’s device language too?

Not for ordinary Gboard dictation. For Pixel Advanced voice typing, however, Google requires the primary Gboard language and primary Android device language to match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Gboard send my voice to Google?

Google states that standard Gboard talk-to-text sends your voice to Google for transcription. Eligible Pixel Advanced voice typing keeps spoken text on the device except when Fix it or detailed edits are used.

Does turning off Gboard personalization stop voice transmission?

No. Personalise for you controls whether speech and typing transcripts are saved on the device for personalization; it does not change the stated standard talk-to-text transcription route.

What happens when I delete learned words and data?

Gboard removes learned personalization data. Names, abbreviations, and phrases it previously adapted to may be recognized less reliably afterward.

Why can’t I find Advanced voice typing?

The feature is limited to eligible Pixel devices, supported languages, and matching primary Gboard and device languages. Update Gboard and Android System Intelligence; after a new Pixel setup, required updates may take time to arrive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use Gboard’s own Voice typing menu to enable dictation, switch languages with the globe key or space bar, and manage personalization under Gboard Privacy. Keep the Android microphone permission separate from those settings. Standard talk-to-text sends voice to Google for transcription, while eligible Pixel Advanced voice typing has a different on-device description and an exception for Fix it and detailed edits. If Advanced voice typing is missing, check device eligibility, supported language, matching primary languages, and updates before treating it as a fault.
