To change your vocation, reach Gran Soren, enter the Union Inn, speak with the innkeeper Asalam, and choose Change Vocation. Your first selection of a particular new vocation requires Discipline. An alternative described by player guidance is Olra at Bitterblack Isle, whom you can reach from the Cassardis docks at night.
The standard way to change vocation
The dependable story-route method is the Union Inn in Gran Soren. Asalam, the innkeeper, provides the Change Vocation command. You do not change vocation from the pause menu or from an equipment screen; you must speak to the service provider.
- Travel to Gran Soren.
- Enter the Union Inn.
- Speak with Asalam, the innkeeper.
- Select Change Vocation from the conversation menu.
- Choose the vocation you want to select and confirm the change.
A secondary game guide identifies this as the normal city-based route. If the command is not available, make sure you are speaking to the innkeeper inside the Union Inn rather than to another town resident or using a different inn service.

Discipline points
The guide’s key qualification is that selecting a vocation for the first time costs Discipline. Discipline is the game resource used for vocation progression and related unlocks, so check your balance before committing to a new choice.

A Steam Community discussion reports example prices of 1,000 Discipline Points for an advanced vocation and 1,500 Discipline Points for a hybrid vocation. Those figures are player-reported rather than independently confirmed by an official Capcom instruction, so treat them as practical estimates rather than a guaranteed price for every situation. The guide establishes that a first-time selection costs Discipline, but the available evidence does not establish a universal price for every vocation or whether a previously selected vocation is always free.
Your character matters
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen separates the Arisen’s vocation options from the Pawn’s. The vocation guide identifies Fighter, Strider and Mage as the three basic vocations and states that hybrid vocations are available only to the Arisen. Your main Pawn therefore cannot switch into an Arisen-only hybrid vocation. If a hybrid does not appear when you are changing your character, that restriction is the expected behavior rather than a failed menu or missing item.

The three basic vocations named in the guide are:
- Fighter
- Strider
- Mage
These are the simplest starting points when you want to move into a different style without first planning around an Arisen-only hybrid. Select the one that matches the role you want to play, then confirm the change at the inn.

Hybrid availability applies to the Arisen only. Do not use the Arisen’s menu as evidence that the same option should be present for the main Pawn.
Alternative access through Olra
Player guidance describes a second provider: Olra at Bitterblack Isle. The same discussion says that players can meet Olra at the Cassardis docks at night, travel with her to Bitterblack Isle, and use her services there.
This is an alternative associated with Bitterblack Isle, not the standard Gran Soren route. The timing and travel details come from community guidance, and the available official manual result does not confirm them. If you use this route, follow the player-reported sequence rather than assuming that Olra will be available at every time or location.

- Go to the Cassardis docks at night.
- Look for Olra.
- Speak with her and travel with her to Bitterblack Isle.
- Use her available services there, including vocation-related services where offered.
If Olra is not present, return to the standard Union Inn route. The Gran Soren method has clearer documentation and does not depend on the community-described early access timing.

For most players, Gran Soren is the better first choice because the service location and menu command are directly identified. Bitterblack Isle is useful when you are already following that route and can reach Olra, but it should not be treated as a replacement for the documented Union Inn procedure.
A complete decision checklist
Use this checklist before you confirm a change:
- Character: Are you changing the Arisen or the main Pawn?
- Eligibility: Is the vocation a basic, advanced or hybrid option?
- Hybrid restriction: If it is hybrid, are you selecting it for the Arisen? Hybrid vocations are not available to the Pawn.
- Discipline: Do you have enough Discipline for a first-time selection?
- Location: Are you at the Gran Soren Union Inn with Asalam, or following the community-described Olra route?
- Confirmation: Have you checked the price displayed by the game before accepting?
This prevents the most common avoidable mistake: arriving at the right town but speaking to the wrong person, or attempting to select an Arisen-only vocation for a Pawn.
Troubleshooting when “Change Vocation” is missing
You are not speaking to Asalam
The command is tied to the Union Inn’s innkeeper. Re-enter the Union Inn in Gran Soren and speak directly with Asalam. A different inn service or another NPC will not necessarily display the vocation menu.

You are trying to use a Pawn for a hybrid vocation
Hybrid vocations are restricted to the Arisen according to the vocation guide. Switch the character-selection context to the Arisen if that is the option you intended to use. If you are managing the main Pawn, select from the options permitted for that character instead.

You do not have enough Discipline
The guide says the first selection of a vocation costs Discipline. If the confirmation screen shows an insufficient balance, leave the menu, earn more Discipline through normal play, and return to the provider. The community’s 1,000- and 1,500-point figures are estimates for particular advanced and hybrid examples, not a substitute for the amount shown in your game.
Olra is not where you expected
The Olra route is based on player discussion rather than an official manual instruction. Check the reported timing and location—Cassardis docks at night—then use the Gran Soren Union Inn if the encounter does not occur. Do not infer that the Bitterblack Isle route has the same access conditions as the Union Inn.
The option still does not appear
Confirm that you are playing Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, that you are inside the Union Inn in Gran Soren, and that you have selected the innkeeper conversation rather than a general lodging action. If the game is showing a price, read that current value; it takes precedence over an outside estimate.
What the official manual evidence does—and does not—confirm
Capcom’s online manual index identifies Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen and lists PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 manuals. When you want to return to another vocation, use the same provider interaction: visit Asalam at the Gran Soren Union Inn and choose Change Vocation again.
