To change how far players can see on a Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server, stop the server, open its server.properties file, edit the view-distance value, save the file, and start the server again. Microsoft documents a default of 32 chunks and requires a positive integer of at least 5. The server value is only a ceiling: each player sees the lesser of the server value and that player’s client render-distance setting.
What the Bedrock view-distance setting does
view-distance controls the maximum visual range that the server makes available to a client, measured in chunks. A larger value can make terrain, structures, and other distant scenery available farther from the player. It does not guarantee that every player will actually see that entire range, because the client has its own render-distance limit.
Microsoft’s current Bedrock Dedicated Server Properties documentation lists 32 chunks as the default. The documented value must be a positive integer of 5 or greater. Microsoft also warns that higher values have a performance impact, so the setting should be treated as a server-wide limit rather than a quality setting that can be raised without testing.
View distance is a cap, not a promise
For any particular player, the effective visible range is the lesser of two settings:

- The server’s
view-distancevalue inserver.properties. - The player’s render-distance value in the Bedrock client.
For example, a server configured for 32 chunks cannot force a device configured for a lower render distance to draw 32 chunks. The client setting can reduce what that player sees, while the server setting limits the maximum available to everyone.
This explains why two people connected to the same world can report different visible horizons. A powerful device with a high client setting may use more of the server allowance than a phone, tablet, console, or computer configured for a shorter range. If a player says the server is “ignoring” a higher value, check the client render-distance setting before changing the server again.

View distance, simulation distance, and tick distance
These names describe different jobs. Changing the wrong one can produce a technically correct setting change but the wrong result in-game.
| Setting | What it controls | Documented value or range | When it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
view-distance |
The maximum visual range supplied by the server, subject to each client’s render-distance setting. | Default: 32 chunks; allowed value: a positive integer of 5 or greater. | Seeing terrain and other scenery farther away. |
| Simulation distance | The range in which game mechanics operate, including entity behavior, mob spawning, plant growth, and fluid movement. | The supplied Microsoft material does not give a single default or range for this setting. | Keeping gameplay systems active around players. |
tick-distance |
A separate Bedrock server property related to the area processed around players. | Default: 4 chunks; allowed range: 4–12. | Adjusting how far server processing extends when the relevant mechanic depends on ticking. |
Simulation distance generally costs more performance than visual distance because it affects both the client and the server. If your goal is to see a farm in the distance, increase view distance. If your goal is for crops, mobs, fluids, or other mechanics to continue operating farther from players, view distance alone may not change that behavior; investigate simulation-related settings and the separate tick-distance property instead.

Before editing the server
Make the change during a maintenance window if other people are playing. Stopping the Bedrock Dedicated Server prevents it from writing its current configuration over your edits and ensures the new value is read during startup.
- Make sure you can access the server’s main directory and its
server.propertiesfile. - Tell connected players that the server will be unavailable while it restarts.
- Record the existing
view-distancevalue so you can return to it if performance worsens. - Choose a test value before opening the file. The documented minimum is 5, and 16 and 32 are practical example values shown in Microsoft’s property documentation.
- Plan to test with the actual number of players and the hardware that normally runs the world; there is no universal safe high value.
The exact location of the main directory depends on how the Bedrock Dedicated Server was installed. The important file is the server’s own server.properties, not a similarly named client or world file.

- Stop the Bedrock Dedicated Server. Use the normal stop control for your installation and wait until the server has fully shut down. Do not edit the file while the server process is still running.
- Open the server’s main directory. Locate the directory containing the Bedrock Dedicated Server files and open
server.properties. Microsoft describes this as an INI-style file with one key/value pair per line. - Find the property. Search the file for the line beginning with
view-distance=. The value after the equals sign is the server’s current maximum visual distance. - Replace only the value. Enter the desired chunk distance. For example, use
view-distance=16for a 16-chunk cap orview-distance=32for the documented default. Keep the key spelled exactly asview-distanceand use a whole number of at least 5. - Save the file. Preserve the file as plain text and leave the key/value format intact. Do not add explanatory words to the setting’s line.
- Restart the server. Start the Bedrock Dedicated Server normally. The new value is read when the server starts, so changing the file without a restart will not apply it to the running process.
- Reconnect and test. Join the world from one or more representative devices. Compare the visible horizon at a known location and watch the server during normal play before deciding whether to keep the value.
Choosing a sensible value
The right number depends on what you are trying to achieve and on the combined capacity of the server and clients. A higher value increases the amount of terrain that can be generated, transmitted, and rendered. That can increase server CPU, memory, and network work as well as client graphics and frame-rate demands.
| Example value | What it establishes | Appropriate use | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | The documented minimum accepted value. | A conservative starting point when reducing visual range to protect performance. | Players may see a noticeably shorter horizon. |
| 16 | A valid example value documented for the property. | A moderate test point when the default causes load or when a shorter range is sufficient. | Whether terrain visibility improves without unacceptable generation, transmission, or rendering load. |
| 32 | Microsoft’s documented default. | Returning to the standard default or retaining the default when hardware and player count handle it. | Client render-distance limits still apply; some devices will show less. |
The documentation establishes that values of 5 or greater are allowed but does not promise that every larger integer will perform well. Treat any increase as a test, not as a guarantee. Raise the setting in small steps, allow players to move through unexplored terrain, and observe the server with the normal player count. If the result is unstable, return to the last value that behaved well.

How to test the change without guessing
A change can appear successful while still creating problems that only show up when several players explore different areas. Use a repeatable check instead of judging the setting from one quiet spot.
- Start the server with the chosen value and connect using the devices that represent your player base.
- Visit an area with a long, unobstructed view and note how far terrain becomes visible for each client.
- Have a player with a lower client render-distance setting repeat the same check. The difference demonstrates the server-cap/client-cap relationship.
- Travel into terrain that has not recently been loaded. This exercises chunk generation and transmission rather than only displaying cached terrain.
- Repeat the test with the usual number of simultaneous players. A value that feels fine for one person may impose more work when several people move in different directions.
- Check gameplay separately from appearance. Confirm whether the issue is visual range or whether farms, mobs, plants, and fluids are expected to remain active farther away; those mechanics involve simulation settings.
Keep notes for each trial: the value, the approximate player count, the devices used, and what changed. This gives you a practical baseline for your own hardware instead of relying on a generic recommendation.

Every additional chunk of visual range can expand the amount of world data that must be generated, kept available, sent across the network, and drawn by clients. The work is shared between the server and each player’s device. Simulation-related changes can add still more server workload because they run game mechanics rather than merely supplying scenery.
Player count and exploration pattern matter. Several players who remain close together may request less distinct terrain than players who spread out, each forcing the server to prepare a different area. New terrain can also be more demanding than a stationary view because chunks must be generated and transmitted as players move.

Troubleshooting common problems
The file change had no effect
- Confirm that you edited the Bedrock Dedicated Server’s
server.propertiesin its main directory. - Make sure the server was fully stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Check that the line is written as
view-distance=number, with the key spelled correctly and a whole-number value of at least 5. - Reconnect after the restart. A client that was already connected before the restart may not provide a useful comparison.
Players still see less than the server value
This is expected when a client’s render-distance setting is lower. Microsoft states that the effective value for a given client is the lesser of the server and client settings. Have the affected player review the render-distance option in the Bedrock client, while remembering that the device may be unable to run comfortably at a higher setting.
Terrain is visible, but farms or mobs stop working
That behavior points to simulation rather than rendering. View distance determines how far scenery can be supplied; it does not by itself extend the range for entity behavior, mob spawning, plant growth, or fluid movement. Review the simulation-related configuration and the separate tick-distance property, whose documented default is 4 chunks and whose allowed range is 4–12.
The server becomes less responsive after an increase
Lower the value to the previous known-good setting, then test a smaller increase. Include normal player count and exploration in the test. If the issue appears only when mechanics must remain active over a wide area, changing visual range may not address it; simulation processing has its own cost and controls.

One device performs poorly while others are fine
The server may be delivering the requested range correctly while the device struggles to render it. Because each client applies its own render-distance setting, players can choose a lower client value without requiring a server-wide reduction, provided the server’s cap remains suitable for the group.
Server and client settings to compare
| Question | Setting to inspect | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| How far can the server make scenery available? | view-distance in server.properties |
The maximum visual distance offered to clients. |
| Why does one player see less than another? | That player’s Bedrock render-distance setting | The effective range is the lower of client and server values. |
| Why are mechanics inactive away from players? | Simulation distance and, where relevant, tick-distance |
Gameplay processing is separate from visual rendering. |
| Why did the server slow down after raising the value? | The new view distance together with player count, hardware, and exploration pattern | Higher visual ranges require more generation, transmission, and rendering work. |
When you cannot edit server.properties
Some managed Bedrock server services do not expose the server directory directly. In that situation, look for a configuration editor or file manager supplied by the service and search for the same view-distance key. If neither is available, ask the administrator to apply the change while the server is stopped. The setting itself does not change: it remains a whole-number chunk value of at least 5, followed by a restart.
Do not assume that a hosting control labeled “render distance” changes simulation distance. Confirm which underlying property the control edits, especially when your goal involves farms, mobs, plants, or fluids rather than scenery.
A practical decision checklist
- Goal is a farther visual horizon: edit
view-distance. - Goal is active mechanics farther away: investigate simulation distance and
tick-distance, not only view distance. - Need a conservative test: use the minimum of 5 or another modest value, then increase gradually.
- Returning to the documented standard: set
view-distance=32. - Only one player is affected: compare that player’s client render-distance setting with the server cap.
- Performance declines: reduce the value and retest with normal hardware, player count, and exploration.
Key facts to keep in mind
The setting lives in the Bedrock Dedicated Server’s server.properties file and is read when the server starts. Microsoft documents 32 chunks as the default and 5 as the minimum accepted value. The server value is a ceiling, so clients can render less. Visual range and gameplay simulation are separate systems, and higher ranges have performance consequences that must be evaluated on the installation that will actually run the world.
