Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To change a Minecraft server’s view or simulation distance, stop the server, edit its server.properties file, save the change, and restart. Set view-distance for how many chunks the server sends to each player; set simulation-distance for how far from each player the server runs game logic. View distance mainly increases memory and network work, while simulation distance is usually the stronger CPU and tick-time cost.
The exact keys and available values depend on whether the server is Java Edition or Bedrock Edition and, for Java, the server software and version. Treat reported defaults and limits as version-dependent, then confirm the accepted range in the documentation for your current build.

View distance and simulation distance are different settings
Both settings are measured in chunks. A chunk is a 16-by-16-block area that the server loads or sends as part of the world around a player. The two distances control different work.
| Setting | What it controls | Main resource cost | Typical symptom when too high |
|---|---|---|---|
view-distance |
How far the server sends world terrain and entities to each client | Memory, chunk-loading work, and outbound bandwidth | High memory use, more network traffic, slower joins or chunk delivery |
simulation-distance |
How far from each player game logic runs, including mobs, crops, redstone, fluid updates, and hoppers | CPU time per tick and server tick budget | Lower TPS, delayed redstone, slow crops or mob behavior, and rubber-banding |
A player can therefore see terrain beyond the area that is actively ticking. That is why lowering simulation distance is often the first performance adjustment, while keeping a somewhat larger view distance preserves visual range. A server that is already short on memory or upload capacity may need the opposite trade-off: reduce view distance first.

Before editing the file
Make the change during a maintenance window if other people are playing. A restart is the dependable way to apply the values, and stopping the server first prevents a running process from overwriting your edits.
- Confirm whether the server is Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
- Identify the server software and version. Vanilla, Paper-based, and other Java builds can document different defaults or accepted limits.
- Ensure you can edit the server’s files or use its control panel.
- Make a backup of
server.properties. A copy lets you restore the previous configuration if the server refuses to start or performance worsens. - Record current symptoms: average TPS, player count, memory use, CPU use, and whether the problem is slow chunk delivery or delayed game logic.
- Change one setting at a time when diagnosing lag. Otherwise you will not know which change produced the result.
Java Edition: change the values in server.properties
Using a hosting control panel
- Open the host’s server dashboard and choose the Minecraft instance.
- Click Stop and wait until the console reports that the process has ended. Do not edit while the server is still writing its files.
- Open Files, File Manager, or the equivalent control-panel file browser.
- Open the
server.propertiesfile in the server’s main directory. It is normally alongside the world folder and the server launch files. - Find the lines beginning with
view-distance=andsimulation-distance=. If a line is absent, add it as a new line rather than placing it inside another property. - Replace only the number after each equals sign. For example, a controlled test could use
view-distance=10andsimulation-distance=6; use values your server version accepts. - Save the file. Check that the panel did not append an extra extension such as
.txtand that the file remains plain text. - Start the server and wait for the normal “done” or ready message in the console.
- Join with a player account and test both distant terrain and a known redstone, crop, mob, or hopper area.
Using a local or self-hosted server
- Tell players to log out, then stop the server from its console with the normal shutdown command or by closing it cleanly. Avoid killing the process unless it is unresponsive.
- Open the server directory in your operating system’s file manager.
- Create a backup copy of
server.properties. - Edit the two properties with a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Keep each property on its own line and do not add quotation marks.
- Save, launch the server with the same command you normally use, and watch the startup console for an invalid-property or parsing error.
- Test at the new distances before inviting everyone back.
There is no confirmed, portable chat command that reliably changes these server properties on every Java server. Treat the file-and-restart method as the supported baseline. A command shown by one server platform may be a plugin, a wrapper feature, or a version-specific function rather than a vanilla setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBedrock Edition: account for render and tick distance
Bedrock servers expose a render-distance setting and a separate tick-distance setting. The names and panel labels can differ between dedicated-server packages and hosting dashboards, so inspect the generated server.properties file rather than assuming a Java-only control exists.

- Stop the Bedrock server cleanly.
- Open
server.propertiesin the control panel or local server directory. - Locate
view-distance(often labeled render distance) and the Bedrock tick-distance property, commonly written astick-distance. - Change one value, save the file, and restart.
- Verify the result in a world with moving mobs, growing crops, redstone, and distant terrain. A visual-distance test alone will not show whether ticking changed.
Microsoft Learn documentation describes an allowable Bedrock render-distance range of 4–96 chunks. That range is documentation for Bedrock and should not be applied to a Java server. The available evidence also reports a Bedrock tick-distance default of 4 and a range of 4–12, but those figures are not confirmed here for every Bedrock release; check the documentation shipped with your exact server version before entering a value outside the panel’s accepted range.
How far should you set each distance?
Choose values from the workload you need, not from a single “best” number. A larger number increases the area around every online player, so the cost rises as player count rises and as players spread into different locations.
| Goal | Starting approach | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a small survival server responsive | Use a moderate view distance and a lower simulation distance; raise them only after testing peak players. | TPS during exploration, CPU usage, and memory pressure |
| Preserve distant scenery for explorers | Keep view distance higher than simulation distance. | Outbound bandwidth, chunk-send delays, and memory use |
| Run farms, redstone, or mob systems reliably | Increase simulation distance only as far as the farm design requires. | Tick time, hopper and redstone delays, and entity counts |
| Operate on limited hosting resources | Lower simulation distance first when TPS is the problem; lower view distance when memory or bandwidth is the problem. | Change one property, restart, and compare the same workload |
| Support many players spread across the map | Prefer conservative values and test with players in separate regions. | Aggregate chunk loading, not just the cost of one player standing still |
Simulation distance is usually set lower than view distance because active game logic is more CPU-intensive than merely sending terrain. That is a tuning pattern, not a rule: an automation-heavy world may need more simulation range, while a scenic server with modest automation may benefit from a larger visual range.

Use a controlled tuning cycle
- Choose a baseline and write down both property values.
- Reproduce the problem: travel quickly through unexplored terrain for view-distance issues, or activate the busiest farm and redstone area for simulation-distance issues.
- Observe TPS or tick-time indicators, CPU, memory, and network usage for several minutes. Include the normal peak player count if possible.
- Change only one distance by a small amount, restart, and repeat the same test.
- Keep the change only if it improves the target symptom without creating a worse one elsewhere.
A value that works with one player can fail when several players stand far apart because each location can trigger its own chunk loading and ticking work. Test the geography your community actually uses.
Reported defaults and limits: why you should verify them
Search results and hosting guides commonly report a Java default of 10 for both view and simulation distance, often describing it as a Paper reference default. Other guides report a 3–32 range for these Java settings, while at least one host-specific reference gives simulation distance a 4–12 range. These reports conflict and are not a substitute for the documentation for your server build.
Do not assume that a value accepted by one Java implementation will be accepted by another. A server may reject an out-of-range value, clamp it to an internal limit, or start with a fallback value. After every change, inspect the effective setting in the server’s configuration or startup output and test behavior in game.

Single-player Java is not a reliable guide to dedicated-server settings. One unverified report describes a 5–32 scale with a default of 12 for single-player. That scale should not be copied into a multiplayer server.properties file without version-specific confirmation.
Bedrock uses its own terminology and limits. The documented render-distance range of 4–96 chunks applies to Bedrock documentation, while the reported tick-distance figures remain version-dependent. Keep Java and Bedrock values separate when writing instructions for a mixed community.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the change appears not to work
The server starts with the old value
- Confirm you edited the active server directory, not a backup, template, or another world folder.
- Make sure the server was stopped before saving. A running process can rewrite
server.properties. - Check for duplicate lines. Keep one active line for each property and remove accidental spaces or a second copy later in the file.
- Verify that the control panel saved the file and that the filename is exactly
server.properties. - Check the startup console for a warning that the value was outside the permitted range and was reset or clamped.
Players still see a short horizon
- Separate server view distance from the player’s client render-distance setting. A client can display less than the server sends.
- Allow time for new chunks to arrive after teleporting or travelling quickly. A temporary empty horizon can be chunk-delivery delay rather than the configured limit.
- Test in an area that was not previously loaded and compare with the server’s effective property value.
- If the server is saturated on upload or chunk generation, reduce view distance even if the property itself is higher.
TPS drops after increasing simulation distance
- Undo the last increase and restart to confirm the relationship.
- Inspect the busiest farms, redstone clocks, hoppers, fluid systems, and mob areas; these are the types of logic the setting allows to run farther from players.
- Lower simulation distance before lowering view distance when CPU or tick time is the limiting resource.
- Test with players in separate regions. A single-player test can hide the multiplied cost of a busy server.
The server will not start after editing
- Stop the process and restore the backup copy of
server.properties. - Start the server to confirm that the file was the cause.
- Reapply one property at a time using a conservative, documented value.
- Read the first configuration error in the console; later errors may only be consequences of the first one.
The simulation value seems higher than the view value
One hosting guide claims simulation distance is silently limited by view distance, using a case where simulation 10 and view 8 result in an effective simulation range of 8. That interaction is not verified across server versions. Do not rely on it as a tuning method. Set view distance at least as high as the simulation value when you need the full simulation range, then confirm the effective behavior in your own build.

How to validate the effective result
Configuration text is only the first check. Use a repeatable validation plan:
- After restart, record the values the server reports or exposes in its configuration UI.
- Move a player far enough from the original area to test whether terrain is delivered at the new visual range.
- Leave a crop, mob, redstone, fluid, or hopper test area at a known distance from a player and observe whether its behavior changes when the player moves nearer or farther away.
- Repeat with two or more players in different regions. Note TPS, tick-time warnings, CPU, memory, and network behavior.
- Keep a short change log with the date, old values, new values, player count, and observed result. Restore the last stable pair if the server becomes less responsive.
Do not judge success solely by how far a player can see. View distance can look correct while simulation distance is overloading the tick loop, and a low client render setting can hide a successful server-side view-distance increase.
Quick Recap
Practical rules for stable settings
- Use the file-and-restart workflow as the portable method; treat chat commands as platform-specific until verified.
- Keep simulation distance lower than view distance unless you have measured need for equal or greater ticking range.
- Change one property at a time and test under realistic player distribution.
- Keep a backup and a known-good configuration so a failed experiment is reversible.
- Verify limits for the exact Java or Bedrock version instead of copying a number from a different edition or server implementation.
- When diagnosing lag, identify whether the bottleneck is network or memory (often view distance) or CPU and TPS (often simulation distance) before choosing which value to reduce.
