In Minecraft Java Edition, change the overall simulation speed with /tick rate <value>. For example, /tick rate 100 targets 100 game ticks per second—five times the normal target of 20. Run /tick rate 20 to restore the default.

This command is Java-only. Bedrock Edition does not provide the same overall tick-rate command. Its closest built-in control is /gamerule randomTickSpeed <value>, which changes how often selected blocks receive random updates; it does not make the whole game run faster.

What “tick speed” means in Minecraft

Minecraft advances its simulation in discrete updates called ticks. The standard target is 20 ticks per second, so one target tick represents roughly 0.05 seconds of game simulation. A tick-rate change tells Java Edition to target a different number of simulation updates each second.

That is different from your monitor’s frame rate. A faster tick target does not automatically increase graphical frames, render distance, or your display’s refresh rate. It changes how quickly the game simulation is scheduled. The result can be a faster-moving world, but the actual result depends on available CPU time, world complexity, server performance, and whether the game can keep up with the requested target.

The command controls the overall Java simulation. randomTickSpeed, by contrast, controls only random block updates such as crop growth, some plant behavior, fire spread, and ice or snow changes. Confusing the two is the most common reason a supposed “tick speed” change appears not to work.

Fast command reference

Goal Java Edition command What it does
Set an overall target /tick rate <value> Sets the Java game’s target ticks per second.
Use the normal target /tick rate 20 Restores the standard 20-tick-per-second target.
Example: five times the normal target /tick rate 100 Requests 100 ticks per second, which is 100 ÷ 20 = 5 times the standard target.
Change random block updates in Java /gamerule randomTickSpeed <n> Changes random block-update frequency only; it does not change overall game speed.
Change random block updates in Bedrock /gamerule randomTickSpeed <n> Changes random block-update frequency only; Bedrock has no equivalent overall /tick rate command.

The commonly reported accepted range for the Java rate argument is 1 through 10,000 ticks per second. That range comes from a community command reference rather than a confirmed Mojang help page, so treat extreme values as experimental and be prepared to return to 20.

Before you run the command

Edition check

Use /tick rate only in Java Edition. Java and Bedrock share the Minecraft name but do not expose identical commands. If you are playing on a console, phone, tablet, or the Windows edition labeled Bedrock, the Java command will be rejected as unknown.

Permission check

Commands that alter the simulation require command access. In a Java single-player world, enable cheats when creating the world or temporarily open the game to LAN with commands enabled. On a multiplayer server, you need operator privileges or another permission arrangement that allows the command. If the game reports that you do not have permission, changing the number will not help; ask the server owner to grant the required access.

Version check

The exact release in which the modern /tick command became available is reported inconsistently by community references, and older installations may not recognize it. Do not assume that every Java version supports it. If /tick is shown as an unknown command, check the version’s command documentation or update to a release that includes the command. The command’s availability and the numerical setting are separate issues.

How to change overall tick rate in Java Edition

Single-player worlds

  1. Launch the Java Edition world in which you want to change the simulation target.
  2. Confirm that commands are enabled. If they are not, pause the game, choose the option to open the world to LAN, set commands to allowed, and start the LAN session. This temporary setting applies to that session.
  3. Open chat with the usual chat key.
  4. Enter /tick rate <value>, replacing <value> with a whole-number target. For example, enter /tick rate 40 for twice the normal target.
  5. Press Enter. The new target applies to the running Java world.
  6. When finished experimenting, enter /tick rate 20 so the world is back at the standard target.

Multiplayer servers

  1. Join the Java server with an account that has permission to run commands affecting the world.
  2. Open chat, or use the server console if you administer the server.
  3. Run /tick rate <value>. In chat, keep the leading slash; in a server console, follow that console’s command syntax, which may omit it.
  4. Watch the server after applying the change. A high target can create lag, especially when many players, entities, redstone systems, farms, or loaded chunks are active.
  5. Return to /tick rate 20 before ending a test unless you deliberately want the altered target to remain.

On a shared server, the setting affects the world rather than only the player who entered the command. Agree on a test window with other players, because changing the target can alter the pace of simulation for everyone connected.

Command blocks and automation

You can place the command in a command block if your world permits command blocks and you have the required access. A command block does not bypass permissions or edition restrictions. Use a one-time impulse block for a temporary test, and keep a second block or a manual command ready with /tick rate 20 as an immediate reset.

Choosing a useful rate

Use the normal target of 20 as the reference point. To estimate the relative requested speed, divide your chosen value by 20. This is a target ratio, not a guaranteed real-world speed: hardware or server load can prevent the game from sustaining it.

Command Requested ratio versus 20 Practical interpretation
/tick rate 1 0.05× Very slow simulation target; useful only for controlled testing.
/tick rate 10 0.5× Half the normal target.
/tick rate 20 1× Default target.
/tick rate 40 2× Twice the normal requested simulation rate.
/tick rate 60 3× Three times the normal target; monitor load carefully.
/tick rate 100 5× Five times the normal target; an example for testing rather than a promise of smooth operation.
/tick rate 1000 50× Extremely aggressive; likely to expose performance limits.

Start with a modest value, observe the world, and increase gradually. A target of 40 is easier to diagnose than jumping straight to an extreme number. If the world becomes unresponsive, use the reset command from chat or the server console.

What changes when the Java tick rate changes

The command changes the target cadence for the game simulation. Events driven by simulation time can therefore occur more quickly or more slowly relative to your real-world clock. This is why a higher target is sometimes used for controlled experiments or demonstrations.

The target is not a guarantee that every requested tick will complete on schedule. Each tick still requires the game to process its normal work. Loaded chunks, large redstone machines, dense entity areas, farms, plugins, and multiple players all add work. If the computer or server cannot finish the workload quickly enough, the game may fall behind, stutter, or become difficult to control instead of producing a perfectly accelerated world.

Rendering remains a separate workload. You may see the simulation attempt to advance faster while the displayed frames remain limited by graphics settings, hardware, or the monitor. Conversely, a high frame rate does not prove that the server or world is sustaining the requested tick target.

Bedrock Edition: the closest alternative

Bedrock Edition does not include the Java /tick rate command. You cannot use /tick rate 100 to make the entire Bedrock world run at five times normal speed.

/gamerule randomTickSpeed <n>

The reported default values are 1 in Bedrock and 3 in Java. Those defaults apply to the random-update gamerule, not to the overall tick rate, whose standard target is 20 ticks per second. A larger random-tick value increases the frequency of eligible random block updates; it does not accelerate player movement, every entity, redstone timing, or the whole simulation.

Bedrock procedure

  1. Open the Bedrock world and make sure cheats are enabled or that you have the necessary operator permission.
  2. Open chat.
  3. Enter /gamerule randomTickSpeed <n>, such as /gamerule randomTickSpeed 10.
  4. Observe the specific block behavior you wanted to test.
  5. Restore the reported Bedrock default with /gamerule randomTickSpeed 1 if you changed a Bedrock world and want the usual setting back.

Because random ticks are applied to selected blocks rather than every game system, changing this gamerule will not reproduce a Java overall-speed experiment. Use it only when your goal is faster or slower random block updates.

Overall tick rate versus randomTickSpeed

Question /tick rate randomTickSpeed
Available in Java? Yes, where the installed Java version supports the command. Yes.
Available in Bedrock? No equivalent overall command. Yes.
Changes the whole simulation? Targets overall ticks per second. No; affects selected random block updates.
Typical use Simulation-speed testing or controlled demonstrations. Changing crop, plant, fire, ice, snow, and related random updates.
Normal value reported by references 20 ticks per second. 3 in Java; 1 in Bedrock.

If a crop grows faster but players and mobs move normally, you changed the gamerule rather than the overall Java tick target. If the game rejects /tick on Bedrock, that is expected behavior rather than a formatting mistake.

Performance, safety, and multiplayer cautions

High values can overload the game

Every requested tick represents simulation work. High targets can increase CPU demand and may produce lag, delayed input, stuttering, or an unresponsive server. There is no performance benchmark that guarantees a particular value will work on every computer or server. Treat the command as workload-dependent, not as a universal speed multiplier.

Test in a copy when the world matters

Before experimenting with an important survival world, make a backup or test in a disposable world. This is especially sensible when you plan to run very high values, activate complex farms, or leave the command running unattended.

Coordinate on servers

A server-wide change can affect every connected player. Tell players when the test starts, avoid changing the setting during time-sensitive activities, and reset to 20 when the experiment ends. A high target can also worsen an existing server performance problem.

Keep a recovery command ready

Write down /tick rate 20 before testing. If the new value causes trouble, run the reset immediately. Administrators should also know how to issue the command from the server console in case chat becomes impractical.

Troubleshooting

“Unknown or incomplete command”

  • Confirm that you are playing Java Edition, not Bedrock.
  • Check the installed Java version; older releases may not include the command.
  • Type the command exactly as /tick rate 20, with a space between tick and rate.
  • Do not substitute randomTickSpeed when you need overall simulation speed.

“You do not have permission”

  • Enable cheats in a single-player world, or open the world to LAN with commands allowed for the current session.
  • On a server, ask an administrator for the required operator or command permission.
  • Check whether a command-management plugin or server policy blocks tick commands.

The game is not visibly faster

  • Make sure you changed the overall Java target rather than only randomTickSpeed.
  • Remember that rendering and simulation are separate; a display may not show more frames.
  • Check whether the computer or server is falling behind under the new workload. A higher target that cannot be sustained will not feel like a clean speed increase.
  • Use a modest test value such as 40, compare it with 20, and reset if performance deteriorates.

Crops changed but everything else is normal

This symptom points to /gamerule randomTickSpeed. That gamerule is designed to affect random block updates, not the overall pace of the game. For an overall Java change, use /tick rate; for Bedrock, no built-in overall tick-rate command is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The world becomes laggy or unresponsive

  1. Run /tick rate 20 as soon as possible.
  2. Stop or reduce heavy farms, entity clusters, redstone machines, and other loaded workloads.
  3. On a server, have an administrator issue the reset from the console if players cannot use chat.
  4. Restart only after resetting the value when possible, then verify that the target is back at 20.

How to return to normal operation

For Java Edition, the normal overall target is restored with:

/tick rate 20

For the random-update gamerule, use the edition-specific reported default: /gamerule randomTickSpeed 3 in Java or /gamerule randomTickSpeed 1 in Bedrock. These are separate resets. Returning the tick rate to 20 does not automatically restore a modified random-tick gamerule, and changing the gamerule does not reset the overall Java target.

Practical examples

Twice-speed Java test

  1. Enable commands and open chat.
  2. Run /tick rate 40.
  3. Observe the simulation while keeping the world workload small.
  4. Run /tick rate 20 to finish.

The requested ratio is 40 ÷ 20 = 2. This describes the target, not a guaranteed measured speed on your hardware.

Five-times target demonstration

  1. Use a test world or backup.
  2. Run /tick rate 100 in Java Edition.
  3. Watch for lag and stop the test if the world cannot keep up.
  4. Reset with /tick rate 20.

The arithmetic is 100 ÷ 20 = 5. It does not mean every animation, frame, or network event will be delivered five times faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Faster crop growth without faster gameplay

  1. In Java, run /gamerule randomTickSpeed 10, or run the same command in Bedrock if cheats are enabled.
  2. Observe crops or other random-update behavior.
  3. Restore the appropriate gamerule default when finished.

This is the correct approach when the goal is block growth rather than a faster overall simulation.

Key takeaways

  • Use Java Edition’s /tick rate <value> for an overall tick-target change.
  • Use /tick rate 20 to restore the normal target.
  • Bedrock has no equivalent overall tick-rate command.
  • randomTickSpeed changes selected random block updates only.
  • Commands require cheats or sufficient operator permission.
  • High targets can cause severe lag; test gradually and keep the reset command available.
  • The exact command introduction release is not stated here because community references disagree; verify support in the documentation for your installed version.
