On an iPhone, you can create a Home Screen shortcut that opens YouTube and give that shortcut a photo from your library. On Android, changing one app’s picture depends on the phone’s launcher and whether YouTube and the launcher support the required icon format. The iPhone method changes the shortcut entry, not YouTube’s installed app bundle. Android has no single menu path that works on every phone.
What you can—and cannot—change
There are three different kinds of customization that are often described as “changing the YouTube icon”:
- A custom iPhone shortcut: a separate Home Screen tile opens the YouTube app and displays a photo you choose.
- System-wide icon styling: iPhone controls can make Home Screen icons larger, dark, automatically adjusted, clear, or tinted. This changes the presentation of many icons, not just YouTube.
- Launcher or themed-icon customization on Android: some launchers offer per-app icons, icon packs, or themed colors. Availability depends on the device, Android version, launcher, and app assets.
Apple’s Shortcuts guidance specifically allows a photo from the photo library to be used when a shortcut is added to the Home Screen. Apple’s developer documentation describes true alternate app icons as a capability that an app developer must build into the app. Those are different mechanisms: the shortcut workaround does not rebrand the installed YouTube application.
Before you start
Decide which result you actually want. If you want one particular photograph, the iPhone shortcut is the clearest route. If you only want YouTube to blend into a dark, monochrome, or colored layout, use the phone’s overall icon-styling controls. On Android, first identify the Home app or launcher you are using; the same Android version can behave differently with a manufacturer launcher and a third-party launcher.

- Have YouTube installed and make sure it opens normally.
- On iPhone, save the image you want in Photos and confirm that Shortcuts is available.
- On Android, check whether your launcher offers an Edit, Icons, Theme, or Icon pack command before installing anything else.
- Do not expect a physical accessory, case, screen protector, or repair tool to change an app icon. This is a software customization.
Change the YouTube icon on an iPhone with a photo
This procedure creates a shortcut whose action is “open YouTube,” then adds that shortcut to the Home Screen with your chosen image. You need the YouTube app installed, the Shortcuts app, and an image already saved in Photos. No purchase is required.
1. Create an action that opens YouTube
- Open Shortcuts.
- Tap the + button to create a new shortcut.
- Tap Add Action, search for Open App, and select that action.
- Tap the app field in the action, search for YouTube, and select it.
- Use the shortcut’s details or rename controls if you want the Home Screen label to be different from “New Shortcut.” A name such as “YouTube” keeps the replacement tile easy to identify.
Run the shortcut once inside Shortcuts to confirm that it launches the installed YouTube app. If it opens a different app, return to the action and select YouTube again. This test also separates a shortcut problem from an issue with the YouTube installation itself.
2. Add the shortcut to the Home Screen
- With the shortcut open for editing, tap its Details button or the share/menu control used by your iOS version.
- Choose Add to Home Screen.
- On the preview screen, tap the icon shown beside the shortcut name.
- Choose Choose Photo (or the equivalent photo-library option), select the image, and adjust the crop if iOS presents one.
- Tap Add. iOS places the new shortcut on the Home Screen.
Apple Support states that when a shortcut is added to the Home Screen, “you can also use a photo from your photo library as the icon.” The exact location of the Details or share button can move between iOS releases, but the workflow remains: create an Open App shortcut, select YouTube, add it to the Home Screen, then choose a photo for the shortcut icon.
3. Choose artwork that survives the icon shape
iOS displays the selected image inside the system’s Home Screen icon shape, so a square image with the important subject near the center is usually easier to recognize than a wide banner. The photo picker may offer a crop; use it to keep faces, lettering, or a simple logo away from the edges. This is only an appearance decision—the source photo remains in your library and YouTube’s own artwork is unchanged.
4. Keep the original app entry out of the way (optional)
The new tile and the installed YouTube icon can coexist. If you want only the custom tile on a Home Screen page, use the normal iPhone Home Screen removal command on the original YouTube icon and choose the option that removes it from the Home Screen while keeping the app installed. Do not choose an option that deletes the app unless you intend to reinstall it. You can still find the installed app in the App Library, while the shortcut remains on the Home Screen.
If you later decide that the standard icon is preferable, remove the shortcut and return YouTube to the Home Screen from the App Library. Removing a shortcut is housekeeping for that extra tile; it is not an uninstall command.
What this iPhone method changes
- The picture belongs to the shortcut’s Home Screen entry.
- Tapping the shortcut runs its Open App action and takes you to YouTube.
- The YouTube app’s installed icon, app bundle, and internal branding are not modified.
- Deleting the shortcut does not mean the YouTube app itself has been deleted; deleting the app is a separate iOS command.
This distinction matters if you later move, delete, or recreate the tile: you are managing a shortcut, not editing YouTube’s application package. Apple’s developer documentation treats a true alternate app icon as something the app developer must configure, which is why a user-created shortcut should not be described as a rebranded YouTube app.

YouTube’s iOS universal-link behavior can send supported YouTube links to the YouTube app instead of leaving them in a browser. That helps explain why a YouTube-opening shortcut can route into the installed app, but it is not a substitute for the Shortcuts steps above and it does not turn a link into a new app icon. The reliable customization is still the Open App action and the photo selected when the shortcut is added to the Home Screen.

Use iPhone Home Screen styling instead of a unique picture
If your goal is a coordinated Home Screen rather than a single custom YouTube image, iPhone’s Home Screen customization controls can apply a common visual treatment. Enter Home Screen edit mode, open the customization control, and choose the available icon size and appearance options for your iOS version.
Available appearance choices
- Light or automatic appearance: lets the system use the selected light/dark behavior.
- Dark: applies a dark presentation to supported Home Screen icons.
- Clear: reduces the visible artwork for a more transparent-looking style.
- Tint: applies a color treatment across the Home Screen icon set.
- Icon size: enlarges icons and can change whether labels are shown, depending on the current iOS controls.
These settings affect the overall Home Screen presentation. They do not assign a different photograph only to YouTube, and they do not create a replacement YouTube app icon in the technical sense. If you want one specific image, use the shortcut procedure above. If you want every icon to match, styling is less work than making individual shortcuts.
Change the YouTube icon on Android
Android customization is more variable than the iPhone shortcut method. The Home app (also called the launcher), the phone manufacturer, Android version, YouTube’s icon assets, and any installed icon-pack support all determine what is possible. A menu shown on one Android phone may not exist on another.
First check whether your launcher supports per-app icons
On many launchers, a long press on an app icon opens a context menu. If you see an Edit, pencil, or icon option, the launcher may let you select another supplied icon, an icon-pack symbol, or—on some devices—a picture from the gallery. The labels and choices differ, so treat this as a capability check rather than a guaranteed sequence.
- Go to the Home Screen and long-press the YouTube icon.
- Look for Edit, an icon preview, a pencil, or an Icons/Theme command.
- If the launcher offers an icon picker, inspect its sources: built-in alternatives, an installed icon pack, or a gallery/photo option.
- Select the available artwork, adjust it if the launcher provides a crop or shape tool, and save.
If the long-press menu has no icon-editing command, open the launcher’s settings and look for Icons, Icon style, Theme, or Icon pack. Manufacturer wording varies, and some launchers support only global styles rather than one-off replacements.
Why themed icons may not include YouTube
Google’s Android developer guidance says a themed launcher icon requires the app to provide a monochrome layer in its adaptive icon. The launcher also has to implement themed icons. If either side is missing, the YouTube icon may remain in its normal colors, appear unchanged, or be excluded from the themed set. The presence of a “themed icons” switch therefore does not guarantee that every installed app will receive a themed version.
This is also why a global color control and a custom photograph are not interchangeable. The themed-icon system supplies artwork in a format the launcher can tint; it is not a promise that the launcher will accept any image from your gallery.

Icon packs and launcher changes
A launcher that supports icon packs can replace YouTube’s artwork with a symbol from the selected pack. This is still launcher-level presentation: it does not alter YouTube’s installed files. Installing a different launcher can expose more controls, but it also changes how the Home Screen, app drawer, gestures, and widgets behave. Check that you can return to your phone’s original Home app before experimenting.
Because launcher behavior is manufacturer-specific, write down which Home app is currently selected and where its settings are before changing it. An icon-pack installation may offer many matching symbols but still omit YouTube, or it may apply a general shape and color without permitting an individual photo.
Can Android use any photo as the YouTube icon?
Only some launchers expose a gallery or custom-image option. Android’s general themed-icon system is not a universal custom-photo feature. If your launcher offers only built-in icons, icon packs, or a global color theme, it cannot use an arbitrary photo for YouTube through that interface. Avoid assuming that instructions for a particular manufacturer apply to your phone.

Troubleshooting the iPhone shortcut
The tile opens the wrong app or does nothing
Open Shortcuts, edit the tile, and inspect the Open App action. It must name YouTube, not a similarly named app or a web shortcut. Confirm that YouTube is installed and opens normally from the App Library. Run the shortcut from the editor before adding it again to the Home Screen.

The old YouTube icon is still visible
The custom tile is an additional Home Screen entry. The original icon will remain wherever you left it until you move it or remove it from the Home Screen using the standard iPhone command. Removing the original tile from the Home Screen is different from deleting YouTube.
The image looks cropped or does not fill the tile
Home Screen icons are displayed inside the system’s icon shape. Choose another crop in the photo picker when available, or edit the source image in Photos before selecting it. The shortcut cannot bypass iOS’s icon mask and spacing.
You expected the custom tile to behave exactly like the app icon
Remember that it is a shortcut entry. Recreating or deleting the shortcut affects that tile, while updates and installation status belong to the YouTube app. If you need the standard app behavior and appearance, keep using the original YouTube icon.

The shortcut label is not what you want
Rename the shortcut before adding it, then add the renamed version to the Home Screen. The label belongs to the shortcut entry, so changing it does not rename YouTube in the App Library or elsewhere in iOS.

Troubleshooting Android customization
No Edit or icon command appears
Your current launcher may not support per-app replacement. Check its settings for icon packs or themes, or switch back to the manufacturer’s Home app if a third-party launcher changed the available controls. Do not assume that a tutorial for another phone applies to yours.
Themed icons work for some apps but not YouTube
The launcher can theme only apps that provide the icon assets it expects. Google’s guidance identifies a monochrome layer as part of the requirement for themed adaptive icons. If YouTube or the launcher does not provide the needed support, the icon may stay unchanged.
A launcher changed more than the icon
Launchers control the Home Screen and app drawer, so changing one can also alter gestures, folders, widgets, and layout. Record your original Home app in system settings and learn how to select it again before making a permanent change.
An icon pack changes everything instead of only YouTube
That is normal for many icon-pack systems: the pack is designed as a set, while individual overrides depend on the launcher. Look for a per-app edit control after applying the pack. If none exists, you may have only global styling, not a single-icon replacement.
What to avoid
- Unofficial modified YouTube applications: they are unnecessary for the documented customization and can create security, update, and account risks.
- Rooting or sideloading solely for an icon: the iPhone shortcut and supported launcher features do not require either step.
- Assuming a theme switch guarantees a custom picture: themed icons and arbitrary photo replacement are different features.
- Deleting YouTube while trying to remove the old icon: use the Home Screen removal command when you only want to hide the original tile.
- Buying unrelated accessories: a case or screen protector cannot alter the software icon. Use software controls that your phone actually supports.

Why does Android not have one universal method?
Android icon behavior is controlled jointly by the launcher, device software, Android version, and app-provided icon assets. Manufacturers expose different menus and capabilities.
Do I need to buy an icon pack or accessory?
No. The iPhone method uses Shortcuts and a photo already in your library. Android customization, when available, is software-based; a purchase is not required by the documented methods.

Use the photo-based shortcut. Dark, clear, tinted, and size controls are broad Home Screen presentation settings and are not limited to YouTube.
Will deleting the custom iPhone tile uninstall YouTube?
No. The tile is a shortcut. Delete or remove that shortcut separately; the installed YouTube app remains unless you explicitly choose the iPhone command to delete the app.
Why does my Android themed-icon setting leave YouTube unchanged?
The launcher and the app both need to support the themed-icon format. Google identifies a monochrome layer in the app’s adaptive icon as part of that support. Without the required asset or launcher implementation, the regular icon can remain.
Can I follow a Samsung, Pixel, or other manufacturer’s instructions on a different phone?
Not reliably. Launcher names, menus, Android versions, and icon features differ. Use another phone’s instructions only as a general clue, then confirm the controls exposed by your own Home app.
Does an icon pack edit YouTube’s files?
