Stop the dedicated server before editing its active XML configuration. Set GameWorld to RWG, enter the desired text in WorldGenSeed, and choose a supported WorldGenSize. Back up the existing save, restart the server, and check the log before players reconnect. A changed seed or size can select a different generated world; it does not resize an existing map in place.
What you are changing
Randomly generated maps on a dedicated 7 Days to Die server are controlled by three values in the server’s active XML configuration. The server reads those values at startup and either loads a matching generated world or creates one when no matching world is available.

World-size support has changed between game versions. Older configuration references show different ranges, so the shipped configuration for the build you actually run is the authority when it disagrees with a current reference.
Before you edit the server
Use a dedicated-server installation
A dedicated server is a separate process, so the world can persist without a host player being online. On Steam, the dedicated-server tool is app 294420, separate from the regular game app 251570. Install or update the server first, then identify the configuration file and launch script it uses.

Identify the active configuration file
Many installations include a shipped serverconfig.xml, but the launch command may point to another file. Editing a file that the launch command never reads produces the classic “nothing changed” symptom. Record the configuration-file option in the start script or service definition before making edits.
Plan for a rollback
Copy the current XML configuration and the complete current save before changing any generation input. Keep the backup outside the live save directory and label it with the date, seed and size. Do not delete the old save simply because you want a new map; retaining it makes returning to the previous world possible.

Safe procedure: change the seed and size
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the normal stop command or control-panel action and wait until the process has exited. Editing while the server is writing can leave the configuration or save in an inconsistent state.
- Back up the save and configuration. Make a full copy of the existing world data and the XML file currently used at launch. Include any server-specific settings you will need to restore.
- Create a custom configuration copy. Copy the shipped
serverconfig.xmlto a file such asmyserver.xml. A separate file prevents a later server update from overwriting your edits. - Point the launch script at the copy. Confirm that the launch command’s configuration-file option names
myserver.xml(or your chosen filename). If you use a hosting panel, verify the panel’s selected configuration file rather than relying on the filename displayed in the installation folder. - Edit only the XML values. Change the text inside the relevant
valueattributes. A minimal RWG configuration looks like this:

<property name="WorldGenSize" value="8192" />- Choose a valid size for the installed build. For a current V3.2 server, use 6144, 8192 or 10240. If your server is on another branch or an older release, copy one of the values accepted by that build’s shipped configuration instead of assuming the V3.2 list applies.
- Save and verify the file. Make sure the XML remains well formed, the property names are unchanged, and the new text is in the
valueattributes—not in comments or in the property names. Preserve a backup of the edited file before starting. - Start the server and watch its log. Look for messages indicating that the world is being generated or that an existing world is being loaded. An error at this stage usually points to an invalid size, malformed XML or a different configuration file being read.
- Wait for the intended world before inviting players. Connect with an administrator account first, verify the map and spawn behavior, and only then have the rest of the group join. Clients must run a compatible game version and any mods required by the server.
How seed and size changes affect the save
A new seed is not an in-place map edit
The seed and size are inputs to world generation. They do not redraw terrain inside an already populated save. When the server starts, it resolves those inputs to a generated-world name. If that world already exists, the server loads it; if it does not, the server generates it.
Changing the seed does not automatically erase the old world
Because the previous save remains on disk, changing the configuration is not the same as wiping the server. Keep the old save backed up and observe which world the startup log selects. If you deliberately want to regenerate a seed that already has a save, first stop the server and use your hosting panel or save-management procedure to move or rename that matching save. Do not remove it permanently until the replacement world has been tested.

Changing size does not resize an existing world
Selecting a larger or smaller value affects a newly generated world, not the dimensions of a world that is already loaded. To use a different size, the server must load an existing save associated with the new generation inputs or create a new one. This is why a backup is essential when changing size on a server that already has player progress.
Why the same seed can appear to do nothing
If the seed and size resolve to a world name that is already present, the server can load that world. Existing structures and explored terrain then make the result look unchanged. Check the startup log and the save inventory before concluding that the seed was ignored.

Choosing a world size

These numbers describe both width and height, so increasing the edge length increases the total area substantially. The documentation identifies them as supported V3.2 values and notes that sizes must be multiples of 2048; it does not establish a universal list for every older branch.

Larger maps and modded server groups require more memory and storage than a small, lightly modded installation. The dedicated-server guidance gives 6 GB of free RAM as a small-server minimum and 10–16 GB for a comfortable modded or four-plus-player setup. Those figures are planning guidance, not a guarantee that every configuration will perform identically.

World generation time depends on the selected size, hardware, storage, server version and mods. No fixed generation-time promise applies. Leave the server running while the log is active, and avoid repeated forced restarts during generation.
- Check free disk space before selecting the largest map or adding a large mod pack.
- Allow additional headroom beyond the minimum if several players or heavy mods will be active.
- Keep a backup location with enough capacity for the existing save as well as the newly generated one.
Troubleshooting a seed or size change
The seed appears to be ignored
- Check that
GameWorldis exactlyRWG.Navezganeselects the handcrafted world and bypasses random-generation seed behavior. - Confirm that the seed text was changed in the active file, not only in the shipped template.
- Check whether a save for the resulting world already exists; the server may be loading it rather than generating a fresh map.
- Read the startup log to distinguish “loading” from “generating” behavior.
Nothing changes after editing
- Verify the launch script or service points to the file you edited.
- Confirm the server was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Check that you changed the XML
valueattribute, not the property name, an XML comment or an inactive copy of the file. - Compare the log’s reported configuration and world name with the values you intended to use.
The server rejects the world size
Use a value accepted by the installed server build. For V3.2, the documented choices are 6144, 8192 and 10240. If the server is on an older branch, inspect its shipped configuration and use that branch’s supported values rather than copying a newer list.

Check free RAM and disk space, especially with a larger map or modded installation. Reduce the selected size or temporarily test without optional mods if the server cannot complete generation. The available guidance supports resource planning but does not provide a guaranteed completion time.
Players cannot join after an update
Make sure the server and every client use compatible game versions. Match required mods and their versions as well. A world-setting change cannot compensate for a server-client or mod-version mismatch.
Rollback and safe testing
- Stop the server and preserve the newly created save separately from the original backup.
- Restore the earlier XML configuration, including its original
GameWorld, seed and size values. - Restore or select the corresponding earlier save through the server’s save-management method.
- Start the server and confirm in the log that the intended older world is being loaded.
- Have an administrator verify player structures and inventories before reopening the server to the full group.
For future experiments, keep one configuration file and one save backup per tested seed-size combination. This makes it possible to switch worlds without guessing which files belong together.
