You cannot change the seed of a world that has already been generated. The level-seed setting is read when Minecraft creates a world. To use another seed, stop the server, back up the current world, set the new seed, and make the server generate a different world folder. Your existing builds, chests, inventories, and explored terrain remain in the old world files; they do not move to the new seed automatically.
What changing a server seed actually does
A Minecraft seed is the input used to generate terrain, structures, biomes and the layouts of new chunks. On a server, that value is stored in server.properties as level-seed. Minecraft reads it while creating a world. Once the world exists, already generated chunks are stored as region files, so editing the property cannot recalculate those chunks under a different seed.

A new seed takes effect only when the old world is no longer the directory selected for generation.
- Existing terrain: remains exactly where it is in the old world.
- Player builds and chests: stay in the old world files.
- New world: is generated from the new number, word or random-seed setting.
- Automatic migration: does not occur. A new world starts without the old world’s blocks and player progress unless you restore or transfer them separately.
Multiple Minecraft hosting guides describe this creation-only behavior. The practical consequence is simple: changing a seed is a world reset or a switch to another world, not an in-place terrain conversion.

Before you start: protect the existing world
World deletion is irreversible unless you have a usable backup. Make the backup before editing files, and do not rely on a backup that has never been tested.
Stop the server completely
Use the host’s Stop control or issue the normal shutdown command from the server console, then wait until the process has exited. Do not delete or rename a world while the server is running. A live server can still be writing region, player or session data, leaving a partial backup or a damaged world.
Make a complete copy
Copy the whole current world directory to a location outside the server’s active files. Keep the copy under a dated name such as survival-before-seed-change-2026-10-14. For a Java server, include the main world folder and, when present, the separate Nether and End folders. A host’s snapshot feature is useful only if it includes all dimensions and can be downloaded or restored.
Record the current settings
Save the original values of level-name and level-seed, and note which server software you use (vanilla, Paper, Spigot or Purpur). This makes it possible to point the server back to the old world if the new generation is not what you expected.
Java Edition: generate a world with a different seed
The following procedure applies to a typical Java Edition dedicated server. Control-panel labels vary, but the order matters: stop, back up, edit, move the old world out of the way, then start.

1. Stop the server
- Send the normal shutdown command in the console, or click the host’s Stop button.
- Wait for the console to confirm shutdown and for file activity to stop.
2. Edit server.properties
Open the file in a plain-text editor and find the line beginning with level-seed=. Replace everything after the equals sign with the seed you want.
- Numeric seed: enter the number exactly, including a leading minus sign if it has one, for example
level-seed=-123456789. - Text seed: enter a word or phrase, for example
level-seed=mountain-valley. Minecraft converts text into a seed value. - Random seed: leave the value empty, as in
level-seed=. The next generated world receives a random seed.
Do not add quotation marks. Save the file as plain text with the exact filename server.properties.
3. Back up before moving anything
If you did not already create a backup, stop here and do it now. The next step removes the directory that contains the old world’s terrain and player data from the server’s active path.
4. Make Minecraft generate a new world
You have two safe approaches.
Option A: rename the current world folder
Rename the folder selected by level-name, for example from world to world-old-seed. Then leave level-name pointing to the original name. On the next start, Minecraft finds no folder with that name and creates a new one using level-seed. Renaming keeps the old world on the server so you can switch back without uploading it again.
Option B: delete the current world folder
Delete the folder named by level-name after confirming your backup. This frees the original name and also causes a fresh generation at the next start. Deletion is quicker but gives you less recovery protection if the backup is incomplete.

5. Handle Nether and End folders on modified Java servers
Paper, Spigot and Purpur commonly store dimensions in separate directories. Along with the main world folder, remove or rename world_nether and world_the_end (or the corresponding names based on your level-name). If these folders remain, the server can load the old Nether or End instead of creating dimensions that match the new overworld.
For example, with level-name=adventure, the related folders may be adventure, adventure_nether and adventure_the_end. The exact names depend on the server software and configuration, so inspect the directory rather than assuming the default.
6. Start and verify
- Start the server after the old world folder (and separate dimension folders, where applicable) has been renamed or removed.
- Wait for world generation to finish and join with a client running the same Minecraft version as the server.
- Travel to several newly generated areas and compare them with the intended seed’s known characteristics, such as its spawn terrain or a verified structure location.
- Stop the server again and inspect the files if the terrain is unchanged. An old folder is usually still being selected, or one of the dimension folders was not moved.
Bedrock Edition: reset the selected world folder
Bedrock uses a different folder layout. The world is stored beneath the server’s worlds/ directory. The folder to remove is the one whose name matches level-name; many Bedrock guides show the default name as Bedrock level.
- Stop the Bedrock server and wait for a complete shutdown.
- Copy the existing world folder to a backup location.
- Open the server’s
server.propertiesand setlevel-seedto a number, a word, or a blank value for a random seed. - Open
worlds/and rename or delete the folder matchinglevel-name. Renaming is safer because it leaves a rollback copy on the server. - Start the server. With no folder matching the selected name, Bedrock generates a new world using the new seed.
If the server comes back with the old terrain, stop it and check the spelling and capitalization of level-name. The folder name must match the configured value, and the old folder must no longer be the one Bedrock opens.

Delete the folder or change level-name?

Changing level-name is often the least destructive test: set a new name, keep the old directory, and let Minecraft create the new directory with the desired seed. Once you are satisfied, you can archive the old folder instead of deleting it.

Can you change the seed without losing builds?
Not in the same world through server.properties. Builds are blocks saved in the old world’s chunks, while the new seed creates a different set of chunks. A reset therefore starts without the structures, chests, farms and explored map stored in the old files.
You have three practical choices:
- Keep the old world: rename it and continue using it whenever you want the existing builds.
- Start fresh: use the new seed and accept that the new world has none of the old world’s construction or progress.
- Restore selected content separately: retain the old world as a backup and use a compatible, version-appropriate transfer or editing workflow only if you understand how it handles player data, dimensions and chunk coordinates. The seed change itself does not perform that transfer.
Do not delete the old copy until you have decided which of those outcomes you want. If the goal is a new landscape with the same base, that is a separate world-editing or structure-transfer project, not a seed-setting operation.

The old world folder is still present under the active name
This is the most common cause. Confirm that the folder named by level-name was actually renamed or deleted, not merely copied. A copied backup inside the server directory can also be mistaken for the active world if its name matches the setting.
A control panel restored the old world automatically
Some hosts provide reset, restore or world-selection controls in addition to file access. Check the panel’s selected world after editing the file; a panel setting can overwrite level-name or restore a saved snapshot during startup.
Only the overworld was reset
On Paper, Spigot or Purpur, inspect the Nether and End directories. Move the matching _nether and _the_end folders as well. Otherwise, those dimensions can retain terrain from the previous seed.

The file edit was not saved in the server’s active directory
Hosts sometimes expose more than one configuration file, especially when several server instances exist. Reopen the file after saving and confirm that the running instance’s level-seed contains the intended value.
You checked an already generated area
A new world still contains its spawn area and any chunks generated during startup. To verify a seed change, inspect terrain beyond the initial area or compare a known seed feature. Do not expect a chunk that already exists in the new world to change after another edit; repeat the reset procedure if you want to test a different seed.

The seed command reports the seed of the world currently loaded by the server. It is useful for identifying or recording a world, but the available discussion does not establish it as a way to replace the seed of an existing world. For a controlled change, use the supported file-edit and world-generation procedure: set level-seed, move the selected world out of the way, and restart.
A safe checklist
- Stop the server and wait for a complete shutdown.
- Back up the entire current world, including separate Java dimensions.
- Write down the original
level-nameandlevel-seed. - Edit
level-seedwith a number, word or blank value. - Rename or delete the folder selected by
level-name. - On Paper, Spigot or Purpur, also rename or delete the matching Nether and End folders.
- On Bedrock, work inside
worlds/and move the folder matchinglevel-name. - Start the server and verify newly generated terrain.
- Keep the old world until the new seed and any required migration have been checked.
Bottom line
A Minecraft server seed is chosen when a world is created. Editing level-seed alone cannot rewrite an existing map. To change it, stop the server, back up the old files, set the new value, and generate a new world by renaming, deleting or changing level-name. Java servers may require the separate Nether and End folders to be reset; Bedrock servers use the matching folder under worlds/. Your old builds remain in the old world, so preserve that folder if you may need them.
