To change the map on a dedicated 7 Days to Die server, stop the server, edit the configuration it actually loads, set GameWorld to RWG, choose a seed and (optionally) a size, then change GameName so the server creates a new save folder. Back up the existing save first: changing these values normally leaves the old world, bases and player progress behind.
This is a server-configuration change, not an action in the in-game pause menu. The exact control-panel labels and supported map-size values vary by hosting provider and game version, so verify those details before restarting.

What “change the world” means in 7 Days to Die
A dedicated server can run several kinds of world. Navezgane is the fixed, hand-authored map; RWG generates a random world from a seed; PREGEN refers to a pregenerated world; and a world-folder name can point the server at an existing save. Changing the world means telling the server to use a different map source or save folder.
Most people asking for a “new map” want a fresh random-generation world. That requires more than changing one visible setting. The server must be told to use random generation, and it must be given a save-folder name that does not resolve to the existing world.

What you need before changing the map
- Administrative access to the dedicated server’s control panel or file manager.
- Permission to stop and start the server.
- Access to the configuration file loaded at startup, commonly
serverconfig.xml. - A backup of the current save directory and any server-side files you may need to restore.
- The server’s game version and any host-specific instructions for random-world generation.
Do not edit a live configuration and assume the change will persist. Host documentation warns that a clean shutdown can rewrite configuration values; an edit made while the process is running may be overwritten when the server stops.
Choose how you want to replace the world

A new seed by itself is not a reliable reset. If the resulting world name already exists, the server can load that save again. Changing GameName is the dependable way to force a new save directory.

1. Stop the server completely
Use the control panel’s Stop action and wait until the server is reported as offline. Do not merely disconnect from the game or close a console window while the process continues running. Stopping first prevents the server from rewriting your changes and reduces the chance of a partially written save.
2. Find the configuration file the server loads
Many installations use serverconfig.xml, but a startup argument can select another file, for example -configfile=myserverconfig.xml. If that argument is present, edit the named file rather than the stock file. Some hosts expose the same keys as fields in a control panel; in that case, use the panel’s documented world settings instead of editing an unused XML file.
If a previous change had no effect, this is the first thing to check. A correctly edited file does nothing when the launch command points somewhere else.
3. Back up the current save
Copy or download the current save before changing any world keys. The save path is commonly represented as Saves/[GameWorld]/[GameName]/. The bracketed parts are variables, not literal directory names: the first identifies the world type or folder and the second is the configured save name.

Keep the backup outside the live save location and label it with the date and the old configuration. Include the save directory containing the world data and, where your host provides them, any server configuration or player-data files needed for a restore. A new world does not merge the old bases or characters automatically.
4. Set the world type to RWG
Change the GameWorld value to RWG. The capitalization matters on hosts that treat the value literally.
A representative configuration fragment looks like this:

Set WorldGenSeed to a text seed of your choice. The seed is used only when GameWorld is RWG. The same seed and the same supported world size are intended to produce the same generated map, which lets a group recreate a known layout after a reinstall or migration.
<property name="WorldGenSeed" value="your-seed-text" />Record the exact spelling, capitalization and punctuation if you want to reproduce the map later. Changing the seed while leaving the old save name in place may still open an existing save, so pair a new seed with a new GameName.

6. Set WorldGenSize only after checking compatibility
WorldGenSize controls the generated map’s size when random generation is active. Published host instructions do not agree on one universal list of valid values:

When your host supplies a dropdown, use one of its available values. When editing XML, check the instructions for your server’s exact version before starting generation. An unsupported size can prevent generation or cause the server to fall back to a different behavior.
<property name="WorldGenSize" value="8192" />The size is part of the information used to derive the internal random-world name, so changing it can select a different generated world even when the seed is unchanged.
7. Change GameName to a new save name
Set GameName to a name that has never been used by this server, such as rwg-october-2026. This value is the save-folder name. A new value prevents the server from reusing the old directory.
<property name="GameName" value="rwg-october-2026" />Use simple letters, numbers, hyphens or underscores unless your host documents other characters. Avoid changing the name back and forth until you have confirmed which save each name represents.
8. Save the file and start the server
Save the configuration, close the editor, and start the server from the control panel. The first start can take longer while the random map is generated. Join only after the panel reports that the server is ready.

Confirm the result by checking that the server is running the expected map type and that a new save directory corresponding to the new GameName exists. If the old map appears, stop the server and follow the troubleshooting section instead of repeatedly changing values while it is running.

If the server still loads the old map
The server was not fully stopped
Stop it again, wait for the offline state, re-open the configuration, and verify that the values were saved before starting. A running process can overwrite an on-disk edit during shutdown.
You edited the wrong configuration file
Check the startup configuration for a custom argument such as -configfile=myserverconfig.xml. Apply the change to that file, or use the control-panel fields if the host manages settings there. This is a common explanation for a server that remains on Navezgane after GameWorld was apparently changed to RWG.
Only the seed changed
Set GameName to an unused value as well. If a save with the generated world’s resulting name is already present, the server may load it rather than generate a replacement.
The old GameName was reused
Choose a clearly new name and check the save path represented by Saves/[GameWorld]/[GameName]/. Do not delete the old directory until you have a verified backup and have confirmed that no players need it.
The size is invalid for this version
Remove the disputed value temporarily or replace it with a size explicitly listed by the host for your installed version. The documented ranges and increments differ, especially between current and older game builds.

The host applies settings through a panel
Some providers regenerate the XML from panel values. In that situation, a manual edit can be replaced the next time the service starts. Change the world fields in the panel, save them, then restart once.
Uploading an existing world instead of generating one
Generating an RWG map and installing an existing map are separate operations. If another server or player has supplied a complete world folder, use the host’s file manager or documented upload process to place it on the server. Then set GameWorld and GameName to the values that identify that folder according to the host’s instructions.
An upload does not create a new random map and does not automatically reconcile mismatched player data. Preserve the uploaded folder’s structure, avoid overwriting the live save before making a backup, and stop the server during the transfer.
How world changes affect players and rollback
Changing GameWorld, WorldGenSeed, WorldGenSize or GameName normally creates or selects a different save. Characters may no longer have their previous inventories, bases and explored locations because those belong to the old world state.
To return to the previous map, stop the server, restore the original configuration values and restore the matching save directory from your backup. Keep the new world as a separate folder until everyone agrees it can be removed. Never restore files into a running server.

- Configuration keys and accepted values can vary between game versions; some published instructions describe older releases.
- World-size guidance is inconsistent: one source describes 2048–16384, while another requires multiples of 2048 and lists 6144, 8192 and 10240. Treat your host’s version-specific list as authoritative.
- A control panel may hide the XML file or generate it automatically, so the visible setting may be the only supported way to make a change.
- Cross-play and other platform-specific limits should be confirmed with the current host documentation rather than inferred from a generic RWG example.
