To change a vanilla Terraria server version safely, announce maintenance, save and stop the server, back up the world and serverconfig.txt, download the target dedicated-server package, extract it into a new version folder, and start that executable with the existing world. Keep the old folder until a client has connected and the world has been tested.
What changing the server version actually involves
A vanilla Terraria server is changed by replacing the dedicated-server program files, not by converting the world file. Your world, player files and configuration normally remain separate from the executable. The safest arrangement is therefore a side-by-side installation: leave the known-good server untouched, place the new release in another directory, and point the new executable at the existing world.

It also gives you a rollback: stop the new process and launch the old folder again. Do not delete or overwrite the old files until the new release has passed a real connection and gameplay test.
Check the release before downloading
Version information changes, so verify the current build on the official Terraria download page at terraria.org immediately before you act. The Official Terraria Wiki currently lists Terraria Server 1.4.5.8 at the top of its vanilla-server downloads. Its Linux archive is named terraria-server-1458.zip; the digits in that filename are the build number. Future releases are expected to use the same naming style, but the digits will change.

The official download page was not independently checked for this article, so treat 1.4.5.8 as a dated reference rather than a permanent latest-version claim. If terraria.org shows a different build, use that build and its matching archive name instead.
Match the clients deliberately
Use a server build intended for the same Terraria release that your players run. A server and client on different builds can reject connections or behave unpredictably. One unverified snippet says a 1.4.5.8 server is used with 1.4.5.7 clients, but the source of that statement is not identified. Do not rely on it as a general compatibility rule; confirm the supported pairing in the current official release information and update clients when necessary.

Prepare a maintenance window
Tell players when the server will be unavailable and record the world name, operating system, launch method and current folder. If a panel or script starts the server automatically, identify that startup entry now; otherwise the panel or service may continue launching the old executable after you install the new one.
- Have administrator or shell access to the machine or hosting panel.
- Know the exact world file being used and where the server reads
serverconfig.txt. - Have enough disk space for the new archive, its extracted files and at least one backup copy.
- Keep a copy of the current server folder until testing is complete.
Back up the world and configuration
Announce a save, then stop the server cleanly. A running server may still be writing world data, so copying files while it is active can produce an incomplete backup.
- In the console, use the normal save command or wait for the server’s save confirmation.
- Stop the process through the console, service manager or hosting panel. Confirm that the process has exited rather than merely closing a management window.
- Copy every world file used by the server to a separate backup location. Keep the original filenames and extensions.
- Copy
serverconfig.txt, including any password, port, world path, max-player and ban-list settings you need. - For a belt-and-braces rollback, archive the entire old server folder as well. Do not modify that copy during the upgrade.
Label the backup with the date, old build and world name. A backup that cannot be identified or restored quickly is not a useful rollback plan.

Manual update: side-by-side installation
The following procedure applies to a self-managed vanilla dedicated server on Windows or Linux. Menu names differ by operating system, but the file layout and order are the same.

1. Download the target dedicated-server package
Use the vanilla server download offered by terraria.org, or the corresponding archive linked by the Official Terraria Wiki. Select the package for the server’s operating system and verify that its build number is the one you intend to run. For the wiki’s currently listed Linux example, the archive is terraria-server-1458.zip.
Do not download tModLoader or another mod platform for this procedure. Those packages follow a separate release track.
2. Create a new version folder
Make a directory next to the current installation, using a name that contains the build number, such as terraria-1458. Extract the archive into that directory. Do not extract over the old files: overwriting can leave obsolete DLLs, executables or scripts mixed with the new release and removes your easy rollback.
On Linux, preserve executable permissions when extracting or set the new server binary executable according to your distribution’s normal file-permission rules. On Windows, extract with a tool that preserves the archive’s directory structure rather than placing only selected files into the old folder.

3. Reconnect the configuration
Place the backed-up serverconfig.txt where the new launch method expects it, or pass its path explicitly in the same way the old installation did. Check every path in the file:
- The
worldentry must point to the intended existing world, not to a newly generated default world. - Relative paths are interpreted from the process’s working directory, which may change when you launch from the new folder. Absolute paths avoid that ambiguity.
- Retain the existing port, password, player limit, ban settings and automatic-save options unless you intentionally want to change them.
If your old setup used a startup script, copy the script to the new folder only after checking that it does not hard-code the old executable path. Update one path at a time and keep the original script as a rollback copy.
4. Start the new executable against the existing world
Launch the server from the new version folder using the same configuration and world as before. Watch the console for the build identifier, world-loading messages and any error about a missing file, permission or incompatible world.
A successful start should load the familiar world name and progress through world initialization without creating a replacement world. If the console asks you to select or create a world, stop and check the configuration path before proceeding; selecting the wrong option can leave you testing a new world instead of the production one.

5. Test before reopening the server
- Connect one client running the intended Terraria release.
- Confirm that the world has the expected size, spawn area, structures, inventory access and player permissions.
- Join with the normal password and, if applicable, test the public port from outside the host network.
- Place and remove a harmless block, leave and rejoin, and verify that the change persists after a save.
- Review the console for repeated warnings, crashes, missing assets or authentication errors.
Only after these checks pass should you announce that the server is available. Keep the old folder and the pre-change backup until the server has run normally through at least one ordinary play session.

How to roll back
If the new build will not start, clients cannot connect, or the world behaves incorrectly, stop the new process. Do not repeatedly launch both versions against the same live world.
- Restore the old startup script, panel entry or service path.
- Launch the old executable with the backed-up configuration.
- If the new process changed the world and you need to discard those changes, stop it and restore the pre-change world backup before starting the old build.
- Record the console error and the exact client and server builds before attempting another update.
Rollback is simplest when the old files were never overwritten and the backup was made while the server was stopped.
Changing to an older version (downgrading)
A downgrade uses the same side-by-side method: stop and back up the current server, obtain the specific older vanilla dedicated-server package, extract it into its own folder, and test it with clients on that release. Do not assume that a newer world is safely reversible. World formats and game features can change between releases, so a world saved by the newer build may not be fully compatible with an older executable.
For a downgrade, make the dated pre-upgrade world backup your primary recovery point. If the older server refuses to load the newer world, restore that backup or continue running the newer build; do not experiment on the only copy of the world.

Some game-hosting panels provide an update, reinstall or version selector. A panel may download the package, change the startup command and retain saves automatically. Other panels can overwrite files, restart immediately or apply updates on a schedule. Behavior varies by provider and was not verified against a particular panel.

Panel checklist
- Read the panel’s warning and identify whether “update” preserves worlds and configuration.
- Download a panel backup of the world and
serverconfig.txtbefore clicking update or reinstall. - Disable automatic restart or auto-update temporarily if it could race with your maintenance window.
- Select the exact vanilla build, not a tModLoader or modded template.
- After the panel reports completion, verify the displayed build, world name and startup command.
- Connect a test client before telling players to return.
If the panel offers no export or backup, make an independent copy through its file manager or support process first. A convenient button is not a substitute for a restorable backup.

Choose manual installation when you need a clearly reversible, auditable change. Choose a panel workflow when its version controls and backup behavior are documented and you have verified them on your account.

This guide is for the vanilla dedicated server. tModLoader was reported as remaining on the 1.4.4 track while vanilla had moved to 1.4.5. A modded server therefore should not be moved to a vanilla 1.4.5 executable as if it were a routine update. Mods, loader versions and mod-specific world changes require their own compatibility procedure and sources.
Troubleshooting after the switch
The server starts a blank world
Stop it immediately and inspect serverconfig.txt. The world path may be relative to the new folder, misspelled or pointing to a default location. Restore the known-good configuration and confirm the world filename before restarting.
Clients receive a version or protocol error
Check the build printed by the server and the version shown by the client. Update both sides to the intended release. Because the claimed 1.4.5.8-server/1.4.5.7-client pairing is not backed by an identified source, treat a mismatch as unsupported until current official information confirms it.
The new process cannot read or write files
Check directory permissions, ownership and whether security software blocked the extracted executable. Confirm that the account running the service can read the world and configuration and can write save data in the required directories.
The panel keeps launching the old version
Inspect the panel’s startup command, scheduled task or service definition. Installing a new folder does not automatically change a command that still references the old executable. Update that entry only after preserving the old one for rollback.
The server crashes during world load
Stop testing with the production world, restore the backup and compare the target build with the world’s last known build. If this is a downgrade, assume world-format incompatibility until demonstrated otherwise. Keep the newer installation intact so you can return to it.
