Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Bedrock servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To change a Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server version safely, stop the server, make a complete backup, download the official server package for the target version, install the new binaries in a clean folder, copy your preserved data into that installation, restart, and verify both the version and operator permissions. A fresh-folder migration is safer than extracting over a live installation because it limits accidental overwrites.
What changing the Bedrock server version actually changes
A Bedrock Dedicated Server installation contains two different kinds of data: executable files supplied by Mojang and files created or edited for your server. Updating replaces the executable portion. Your worlds, server settings, allowlist and permission records are separate and must be carried forward deliberately.

A hosting panel may automate the file replacement, but its retention rules are provider-specific. Do not assume that a panel reinstall behaves like a manual installation.
Version labels can be confusing. The Minecraft Wiki entry for the currently identified stable package lists Bedrock Edition 26.52 and Bedrock Dedicated Server 1.26.52.3; the release date is not established in that entry. Check the download page and package name immediately before updating rather than relying on an old version number: Minecraft Wiki: Bedrock Dedicated Server 1.26.52.3.

Prepare before replacing any files
- Tell players when the server will be offline and wait until everyone has disconnected.
- Record the version currently shown by the server console so you can tell whether the replacement succeeded.
- Identify the server’s installation directory and confirm where its
worldsdirectory is located. - Make a copy of the entire server directory in a separate location. A full copy gives you a recovery path if the new package, a configuration change or a world migration fails.
- Have enough free disk space for the backup and the new installation. Do not delete the old copy until the updated world has been opened and tested.
- Download a package that matches the server’s operating system and CPU architecture. Do not mix files from a Java Edition server or from a different Bedrock release.
Third-party update instructions consistently put the backup first, with particular emphasis on the world and configuration files. The XGamingServer procedure describes the same preservation step for a Bedrock update: Bedrock server update guide.
Files that must survive the update
Keep the following items from the old installation. Copy them only after the new package has been extracted, and retain the original backup until testing is complete.

Bedrock records permissions by Xbox user identifier (XUID) and uses the levels operator, member and visitor; it does not use Java Edition’s ops.json. This distinction is described in the Bedrock Dedicated Server reference on Minecraft Fandom: Bedrock Dedicated Server reference.
Do not edit a JSON file while the server is running. Stop the process first, keep a pristine backup, and preserve valid JSON syntax. If you are unsure whether an entry is valid, restore the backed-up file and use the in-game or console command instead of hand-editing it.

Choose an installation method

The fresh-folder approach is recommended by one of the cited update guides because it makes rollback straightforward. In-place replacement is possible, but only with a verified backup and a careful comparison of the resulting files.
Step-by-step: update with a fresh server folder
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the panel’s Stop control or the normal console shutdown command for your installation. Wait until the process has exited before copying files. A live copy can capture incomplete world data.
- Back up the complete old folder. Copy the entire directory to a dated backup location. Confirm that the backup contains
worlds/,server.properties,permissions.jsonandallowlist.json. Keep the backup outside the directory that will receive the new package. - Confirm the target release. Download the official Bedrock Dedicated Server zip for the target version and operating system. Version identifiers change frequently; the cited reference currently identifies 26.52 and 1.26.52.3, but you should use the package offered at the time of your maintenance window.
- Create a new, empty installation directory. Give it a clear name such as
bedrock-1.26.52.3. Do not extract the archive into your backup directory. - Extract the official zip. Preserve the directory structure created by the archive. The new folder should contain the server executable and the package’s supporting files before you copy any personal data.
- Migrate the preserved data. Copy the complete
worlds/directory, then copyserver.properties,permissions.jsonandallowlist.jsonfrom the backup into the new folder. If the archive created default versions of those files, replace them with your preserved copies only after confirming the destination is the new folder. - Review paths and settings. Open
server.propertiesand confirm that the level name still matches a directory underworlds/. Check that the port, difficulty, game mode, online-mode setting and allowlist setting are what you expect. Do not change unrelated values during the version migration. - Start the new installation. Launch the server using the same startup method and environment used by the old installation. Watch the console for the startup completion message and for errors concerning a missing world, malformed JSON or unavailable ports.
- Verify before switching players over. Confirm the version displayed in the console, connect with an administrator account, open the expected world, test a harmless block interaction and check that the allowlist behaves as intended. Keep the old folder and backup until these checks pass.
Updating in place
If you cannot create a second folder, stop the server and copy the four required items to a separate backup location first. Extract the target zip over the stopped installation, then confirm that worlds/, server.properties, permissions.json and allowlist.json still contain your original data. This method is more exposed to accidental overwrites, so compare timestamps and file contents before starting the process.

If the server starts with a new default world or loses settings, stop it, restore the complete backup and investigate from there instead of repeatedly changing files in the damaged directory.
If a hosting panel manages the server
Some providers expose an Update, Reinstall or Change Version action rather than a file manager. Follow that panel’s warning about downtime and make your own download of the important files before clicking it. One documented panel workflow replaces the installation with the latest version while preserving worlds/, server.properties, permissions.json and allowlist.json; that behavior belongs to that provider and is not a guarantee for every host: provider update procedure.

After a panel reinstall, inspect the file manager and console just as you would after a manual migration. Confirm which world directory is active, because a panel can preserve several worlds while the startup configuration selects only one.
Confirm the version and world after restarting
- Read the startup banner or version line in the server console and compare it with the target package identifier.
- Check that the expected world name appears in the startup output and that no fresh-world creation message appears unexpectedly.
- Connect from a Bedrock client that is compatible with the server version. Test from an operator account and, separately, a normal member account.
- Inspect the server settings in the running game: difficulty, mode, cheats or command access, player limit and allowlist behavior should match the preserved configuration.
- Have a second player join and leave once. This verifies that authentication, permissions and world saving work beyond the administrator session.
If the console reports that the server is ready but clients cannot connect, first check that you are using the same address and port as before and that the server process is listening on the expected interface. Do not alter world files while diagnosing a network problem.

Restore operator access after an upgrade
An update can leave a player without operator privileges even when the world loads correctly. A forum report describes an administrator losing op status after an upgrade, restoring a backup and then issuing the op command again: Bedrock forum discussion about lost op status.
Use the console command first
- Start the server and authenticate the player with the Xbox account that should receive privileges.
- In the server console, run
op PlayerName, replacingPlayerNamewith the player’s exact in-game name. - Have that player disconnect and reconnect, then run a harmless operator-only command to confirm access.
- Stop the server cleanly and verify that the change was written to
permissions.jsonbefore making another backup.
Guides for Bedrock operator setup state that the op command writes a persistent record when the player is authenticated with Xbox Live; without that authentication, the promotion may last only for the current session. Check the permission file safely
With the server stopped, open the backed-up and active permissions.json files in a text editor that does not silently reformat JSON. Compare the player’s XUID entry and permission level. A valid operator record uses the Bedrock permission level operator. If the file is malformed or the entry is missing, restore the last known-good copy and issue op PlayerName from an authenticated session rather than guessing at the JSON structure.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server starts, but a new world appears
Stop the server and inspect server.properties. The configured level name must correspond to the intended directory under worlds/. If the name is wrong, restore the preserved properties file, confirm the directory name exactly, and start again. Do not overwrite the old world with the newly generated one.
Settings reverted to defaults
The new package’s default server.properties may still be active. Stop the server, compare it with your backup and copy the preserved file into the new installation. Review the values before restarting.
The server refuses to start
Read the first error in the console rather than deleting files at random. Common update-related causes include extracting an incomplete archive, using a package for the wrong operating system, leaving an old process bound to the server port, or copying invalid JSON. Restore the old installation from the backup if you need the server online while diagnosing the new folder.

Players cannot join after the update
Confirm that the client is running a compatible Bedrock release, the server process is listening on the expected port, and the allowlist has not been replaced by a default file. Test locally or with an administrator account before changing firewall or router settings.
Operator status disappeared
Run op PlayerName again from the console while the player is authenticated, reconnect, and verify persistence after a restart. If the status still disappears, compare permissions.json with the backup and make sure you are editing the file used by the active installation rather than the old folder.

You need to go back to the old version
Support for downgrading and the compatibility of worlds between arbitrary Bedrock releases are not established by the cited material. Do not experiment on the only copy of a world. Stop the server, preserve the current folder, restore the complete pre-update backup and its matching binaries, and test the restored copy before allowing players back in.
