With AdminCP access, change a vBulletin administrator password from Users > Search for Users: filter Primary Usergroup to Administrators, find the account, open its profile, enter the new password, save it, then log out and sign in again. If the installation renamed the AdminCP directory, use that configured path instead of assuming /admincp/.
What you need before changing a vBulletin administrator password
The normal administrator-management route requires all of the following:

- A working login to vBulletin’s AdminCP.
- Permission to manage administrator accounts.
- The username of the account whose password you intend to change.
- The correct AdminCP address for this installation.
The vBulletin Manual describes AdminCP as the control panel used for site administration. Its example URL pattern is https://www.example.com/forums/admincp/. That is only a pattern: your forum may be installed in a different directory, and the administrator may have renamed the directory in config.php by changing $admincpdir. In that case, the login address uses the renamed directory.
Do not begin by changing accounts at random. A search filtered to the Administrators group can return more than one account, so identify the exact username before editing anything.

Change another administrator’s password in AdminCP
SiteGround’s knowledge-base procedure, updated August 7, 2025, uses the following AdminCP sequence. Labels can vary slightly by vBulletin release, but the workflow is the administrator search and account-edit screen.
- Open AdminCP. Go to the configured administrator-control-panel URL and sign in with an account that can manage administrator users.
- Open the user search. In the AdminCP navigation, choose Users > Search for Users.
- Limit the search to administrators. Open the Primary Usergroup drop-down and select Administrators.
- Run the search. Click Find.
- Confirm the target account. Review the returned usernames and select the administrator whose password must change. If several accounts appear, do not edit every result unless you intentionally want to rotate each one.
- Open that account. Click the selected administrator’s username.
- Enter the new password. Locate the account’s Password field and enter the replacement password. Use the password rules or strength guidance displayed by your installation, if any.
- Save the account. Use the save or update control shown on the account-edit page. Wait for the confirmation or completed page before leaving it.
- Test the change. Log out of the administrative session, then log in again with the same administrative username and the new password. This final logout-and-login check is part of the documented procedure.
How to avoid changing the wrong administrator
The Administrators filter identifies accounts by their Primary Usergroup. It is a targeting aid, not a command to update every result. Before entering a password, compare the username with the account owner or the change request you received.
- If one intended account is listed, open only that username.
- If several administrators are listed, treat each as a separate change. Finish and verify one account before opening another.
- If the list does not match your expectation, stop and confirm the account’s username and primary group rather than broadening the search indiscriminately.
- If you are performing a planned rotation for all administrator accounts, record which usernames you changed and verify each one independently.
A password change applies to the account you opened. It does not automatically change the credentials of other administrators.

Change your own vBulletin password from the public site
Changing your own password is a different workflow from managing another administrator in AdminCP. The vBulletin Manual’s FAQ describes a self-service route on the public forum:
- Sign in to the public site and open your profile.
- Choose Edit Settings.
- Open the Account tab.
- Enter your current password.
- Enter the new password twice, as requested by the form.
- Save the account settings.
This route changes the password for the logged-in user only. It does not provide the administrator-management screen for selecting another administrator. It also requires the current password, so it is not a substitute for an administrator recovery procedure when the password has been forgotten.
Which password-change method should you use?

Use the first method when you are responsible for another administrator’s account. Use the second only when you are changing your own credentials and still know the current password.

Finding the correct AdminCP address
When the standard path works
If the forum is installed under a forums directory and the administrator directory has not been renamed, the Manual’s pattern would look like https://your-domain.example/forums/admincp/. Replace the domain and forum directory with the values used by your installation; the example is not a universal URL.
When /admincp/ does not work
A missing page or failed login at the standard path may simply mean that $admincpdir was changed in config.php. Use the directory name configured for the site. If you do not administer the server or cannot inspect the configuration, ask the site owner or hosting administrator for the current AdminCP path rather than repeatedly guessing URLs.
The directory name is separate from the password itself. Renaming it changes where the control panel is reached; it does not, by itself, change an administrator’s credentials.

What to do if you cannot access AdminCP
The documented administrator-password procedure assumes that you can already sign in to AdminCP with sufficient permissions. The cited material does not establish a current, version-independent database-edit command or lockout-recovery procedure. That matters because an SQL statement or file edit that is appropriate for one vBulletin release, configuration, or authentication setup may be unsafe or ineffective in another.
Use this decision path instead:
- You can sign in to AdminCP: follow the administrator search procedure above.
- You can sign in only to your public profile and know your current password: use Edit Settings > Account to change your own password.
- You know neither the AdminCP password nor the current password for the public profile: do not assume that the self-service form will recover the account; it requires the current password.
- You have server or hosting access but no documented recovery for your exact release: consult the documentation for that vBulletin version or obtain help from the person responsible for the installation. Confirm the release and authentication setup before making any database or configuration change.
- You are supporting a site you do not own: obtain authorization and identify the correct account before attempting a reset.
Do not present an unverified database edit as a universal vBulletin solution. The available documentation supports the AdminCP workflow, not a release-independent emergency command.

- Confirm that the account-edit page reported a successful save or returned you to the completed user record.
- End the current AdminCP session.
- Start a fresh login with the target username and the new password.
- Confirm that the account can reach the expected administrative area.
- If you changed more than one administrator as part of a planned rotation, test each account separately and keep a record of which account was verified.
If the old password still appears to work, or the new one does not, repeat the check from a fresh session and verify that you edited the intended username. If the problem remains, stop making additional account changes and have the installation owner check the exact vBulletin version and login configuration.
Password-change precautions
- Use a password that is unique to the forum administrator account and store it in an approved password manager if your organization uses one.
- Do not send the new password through an unprotected channel or leave it in a ticket, chat transcript, or shared document.
- Make the change during a window when the account owner can complete the logout-and-login test.
- Change only the accounts covered by the authorization. The Administrators filter may display accounts that should remain untouched.
- After a planned rotation, update the organization’s credential record and remove obsolete copies of the old password.
Common questions
Can I change an administrator password from the public profile page?
Only for the account currently signed in, and only when its current password is known. Selecting another administrator requires the AdminCP user-search workflow.

The filter searches for users whose primary usergroup is Administrators. Multiple administrator accounts can therefore be returned. Open and change only the username you have identified, unless your authorized task is to rotate every listed account.
Is /admincp/ always the correct login path?
No. It is the Manual’s example pattern. If $admincpdir was renamed in config.php, the configured directory replaces admincp in the URL.
What database command resets a locked-out administrator?
No single, version-independent command is established by the cited documentation. Confirm the exact vBulletin release and obtain an authoritative recovery procedure before editing the database or configuration.
Does changing one administrator’s password change all administrator passwords?
No. The password field belongs to the username you opened. Other accounts change only when you deliberately open and save them as well.
