On a RimWorld Together server, an individual player normally changes their own storyteller from Options > Gameplay > Storyteller Settings > Modify. Server administrators can instead require one storyteller for everyone by using the admin panel’s Difficulty Manager and selecting Yes, or by setting EnforceStoryteller to true in the server’s storyteller configuration and restarting the server.
What the storyteller setting controls
The storyteller is the game system that selects and schedules events for a colony. In RimWorld Together, the server can either let each player choose a storyteller or enforce one storyteller for every connected player.
These are separate from difficulty. A storyteller determines the event style and pacing; difficulty determines the rules and challenge values applied to the colony. Changing one does not automatically change the other.
Change your own storyteller as a player
Storyteller enforcement is usually disabled by default on RimWorld Together servers. When it is disabled, each player can select a storyteller locally in the game.

- Join the RimWorld Together server.
- Press Esc to open the pause menu.
- Select Options.
- Open the Gameplay tab.
- Find Storyteller Settings and click Modify.
- Choose the storyteller you want, then close the menu and return to the game.
If the storyteller controls are unavailable, greyed out, or revert after you select one, the server is probably enforcing a server-wide storyteller. Only an administrator can change that policy.
Let every player choose their own storyteller from the admin panel
An administrator can explicitly turn off enforcement without editing files. This is the recommended approach when the panel is available because it avoids capitalization and file-path mistakes.

- Click the admin icon in the top-right corner of the game interface.
- Open Difficulty Manager.
- Set the storyteller enforcement option to No.
- Have each player follow the player procedure: Esc > Options > Gameplay > Storyteller Settings > Modify.
Setting Difficulty Manager to No means the server does not force one storyteller. It does not select a storyteller for every player; each player still makes their own choice in the Gameplay menu.

Enforce one storyteller for the whole server
Use this when the server owner wants a consistent storyteller for all players. There are two ways to enable it.
Option 1: Use Difficulty Manager in game
- Join the server as an administrator.
- Click the admin icon in the top-right corner.
- Open Difficulty Manager.
- Choose the storyteller that should apply to the server.
- Set the enforcement option to Yes.
After enforcement is enabled, players should no longer be able to override the server’s storyteller through their personal Gameplay settings. If a player still sees an editable storyteller, disconnect and reconnect, then verify the administrator’s setting again.
Option 2: Edit the storyteller configuration file
Direct file editing is useful when the in-game admin panel is inaccessible, but the RimWorld Together wiki recommends using the in-game admin panel when possible.

- Stop the server before changing its configuration.
- Open your hosting control panel’s Files tab.
- Navigate to the
/Configs/folder. - Open the storyteller configuration file. Hosting guides commonly call it
StorytellerConfig.json; another spelling found in community documentation isStoryTellerConfig.json. Use the file that actually exists in your server’sConfigsfolder. - Find the
EnforceStorytellersetting. - Set it to
trueto enforce the storyteller defined in that configuration. Set it tofalseto allow players to choose their own. - Save the file.
- Start or restart the server.
The Boolean value must be written as JSON, not as a quoted word. The relevant setting should be represented as "EnforceStoryteller": true or "EnforceStoryteller": false, while preserving the rest of the file’s existing structure.

Do not confuse storyteller with difficulty
The same player menu also contains difficulty controls, which is why the two settings are often mixed up.
Changing difficulty as a player
- Open Esc > Options > Gameplay.
- Under Storyteller Settings, click Modify.
- Choose a difficulty preset, or select a custom difficulty.
- If you choose custom, adjust the individual sliders exposed by the game.
Difficulty values are stored separately from storyteller enforcement. The server’s difficulty file is commonly named DifficultyConfig.json and corresponds to the custom options in the vanilla in-game menu.

Why difficulty may behave differently between servers
RimWorld Together documentation is not completely consistent about difficulty scope. One guide describes difficulty as a per-player choice, while another says the admin Difficulty Manager can apply a setting to all players. The first player’s initial server setup is reported to influence which behavior applies.
After the first player joins a newly configured server, check the result rather than assuming the scope. Have a second player join and inspect the difficulty controls. If both players receive the same enforced setting, the server is applying difficulty globally; if they can make separate choices, it is operating per player.

The Modify button is missing or does nothing
- Ask an administrator to inspect Difficulty Manager. If enforcement is Yes, players cannot choose independently.
- Confirm that you opened the Gameplay tab, not a different Options tab.
- Reconnect after an administrator changes enforcement so the client receives the updated server state.
The server keeps enforcing the old storyteller
- Check that the administrator selected the intended storyteller before setting enforcement to Yes.
- If you edited a file, verify that you changed the storyteller configuration in the active server’s
/Configs/directory, not a local game file or an unused backup. - Confirm the key is spelled exactly
EnforceStoryteller. A community snippet has shown the misspellingEnforeStoryteller, but that is not the documented key to rely on. - Stop and restart the server after saving a file change. A running server may continue using the previous values.
The expected configuration file is not present
File capitalization and naming differ between published guides. Look in the actual Configs folder for the storyteller configuration and compare the available names. Documentation may show StorytellerConfig.json or StoryTellerConfig.json; the folder on your server is authoritative.

The file will not save or the server fails to start
- Make a backup copy before editing.
- Change only the Boolean value and preserve commas, quotation marks, and braces elsewhere in the JSON.
- Use lowercase JSON Booleans,
trueorfalse, rather than"true"or"false". - If the server reports a configuration error, restore the backup and use the in-game admin panel instead.
Which method should you use?
- Choose the player menu when the server allows personal choices and you only want to change your own storyteller.
- Choose the admin panel when you manage the server and want to allow or enforce choices without touching JSON. This is the recommended administration route.
- Choose the file when panel access is unavailable or you need to apply the setting before the next server start. Stop the server first and restart it after saving.
For a normal shared server, leave enforcement off so players can select their own storytellers. For a coordinated multiplayer scenario that requires identical event pacing, select the storyteller as an administrator and enable enforcement.

Version and label caveat
The menu names above come from hosting guides and RimWorld Together community documentation. Interfaces can change between server releases, and the community wiki page reflected documentation that may lag the current release. If a label differs, look for the equivalent admin control for storyteller or difficulty enforcement, and verify the live panel and Configs folder before editing anything.
