Change the FirstTimeStartingWeapon value in SandboxSettings.ini, or use the equivalent field in your host’s Sandbox Settings panel. Stop the server before editing, choose a documented value, save the change, and restart. The setting is applied when a player joins for the first time; it does not normally give a replacement weapon after death.
What the setting controls
FirstTimeStartingWeapon controls the weapon assigned when a player first joins an Abiotic Factor server. It is part of the server’s sandbox configuration and is normally stored in SandboxSettings.ini. You can change it by editing that file directly or, on hosts that provide the option, by changing a labeled field in the hosting panel.

A player who has already joined the world should not expect a new starting weapon after dying. That timing is important when testing a change: use a player who has never joined the world, or otherwise follow your host’s method for testing a first-time spawn.

There is a documented disagreement about the upper end of the range. SparkedHost and BisectHosting list values only from 0 through 5, while Shockbyte and TechRaptor include 6 for Random. If your host’s documentation or configuration interface does not list 6, do not assume that Random is supported by your particular server build. Use a value shown by the panel, or verify the setting on a disposable world before changing a live one.
One hosting guide reports None as the default, but that default has not been independently confirmed. Treat the value already present in your file or panel as authoritative for your installation rather than relying on an assumed default.

Before you edit the server
- Stop the server completely. Configuration changes can be overwritten or ignored while the process is running.
- Back up the world. Copy the world folder and the current configuration file before changing anything. A backup gives you a way to restore the previous behavior if the world fails to load or the setting is rejected.
- Record the current value. Note the existing
FirstTimeStartingWeaponline, including its number, so you can reverse the change without guessing. - Confirm whether you are changing a new or existing world. Sources disagree about whether a file edit is applied to a world that already exists. The safest test for a major change is a newly created world, unless your host documents an existing-world procedure.
- Check the host’s supported range. A panel that offers only 0–5 may be exposing the range supported by that host or build, even if another guide lists Random as 6.
Method 1: Change the value in the hosting panel
This is the simplest route when your provider exposes the setting. Panel labels and locations vary, so the exact tabs may not match these names on every service.
- Open the server control panel and use its Stop or Shutdown control. Wait until the server is fully offline.
- Open the configuration area commonly labeled Sandbox Settings.
- Find First Time Starting Weapon. The panel may show a number field, a selector, or a list of weapon names.
- Enter the numeric value you want:
0for None,1for Shiv,2for Desk Leg,3for Kitchen Knife,4for Starter Baton,5for Pipe Club, or6for Random only if the panel or host documentation supports it. - Save or apply the configuration. If the panel offers a separate save button, use it before leaving the page.
- Start the server again and wait for it to finish loading.
- Have a player who has never joined that world connect for the first time. That first join is the event on which the setting is reported to act.
A panel is host-dependent. If you cannot find the field, it may not be exposed for your service, may be available only for a newly created world, or may be represented by an imported configuration file instead. Do not create a second, similarly named setting; use the host’s documented field or switch to the file method.

Method 2: Edit SandboxSettings.ini manually
Manual editing gives you direct control over the numeric value, but the path and file behavior differ between hosts. The commonly documented world path is:
AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/<Your Save Name>
Inside the folder for the relevant save, look for SandboxSettings.ini. The file must contain a [SandboxSettings] section header or the settings may not load.

- Stop the server from the control panel or service manager and wait for the process to exit.
- Open the file manager, file browser, or SFTP interface supplied by your host.
- Navigate to
AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/<Your Save Name>. Replace<Your Save Name>with the actual folder name for the world you intend to change. - Download or copy the existing
SandboxSettings.inias a backup before editing it. - Open the server’s file and verify that it begins with, or includes, the section header
[SandboxSettings]. - Find the line for
FirstTimeStartingWeapon. Change only its value, for example:FirstTimeStartingWeapon=3 - Use one documented integer. Do not type a weapon name, add quotation marks, or place the setting under a different section.
- Save the file and upload it again if your host uses a download-edit-upload workflow.
- Start the server and wait for a normal world load.
- Test with a player who has not previously joined the world. A player who has already spawned may not receive a different weapon simply because the file changed.
If the file is missing, do not assume that creating it in an arbitrary directory will work. One guide reports that some servers write sandbox settings into the world at creation and do not automatically generate a separate SandboxSettings.ini. In that situation, the host-specific procedure may require creating the file in the server root and launching the server with -SandboxIniPath pointing to it. That parameter is not established as a universal method, so use it only when your hosting provider documents the required path and launch configuration.
Changing a world that already exists
Whether this setting can be changed reliably after world creation is unsettled in the available hosting documentation. Some guides assume that the world-folder file is read whenever the server starts. Another guide says sandbox settings are written when the world is created and retained in the save data, with no automatically generated SandboxSettings.ini.

Use this decision path:
- Creating a new world: Set the value before the first player joins. This is the least ambiguous scenario.
- Using an existing world with a visible file: Back up the world, stop the server, edit the file, restart, and test with a genuinely first-time player. If the behavior does not change, the world may be using stored settings instead of reading the edited file.
- Using an existing world without the file: Ask the host which configuration source that installation uses. Do not place an unreferenced file in the root and assume the game will discover it.
- Using a host that documents
-SandboxIniPath: Follow that host’s exact launch-parameter syntax and file location. The flag is a host-specific remedy described for installations where sandbox settings are embedded in the save.
Do not delete or recreate a live world merely to test a weapon value. Make a backup first, and create a separate test world when you need to determine whether your build reads the file at startup.

How to verify the change
- Confirm the server was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Reopen the panel or file and verify that the saved value is still the number you selected. Some panels regenerate configuration files during startup.
- Use a player account that has never joined the target world, or test on a fresh world.
- Check the player’s initial inventory or spawn equipment immediately after the first join.
- Do not use a death-and-respawn test as proof that the setting failed. The documented behavior concerns the first join, not later deaths.
If a fresh player receives the expected item on a test world but an existing world does not change, that points to world-creation or save-data behavior rather than an invalid weapon number.
Troubleshooting
The server starts, but players still get the old weapon
- Make sure you edited the world that the server actually starts. Multiple save folders can have similar names.
- Confirm the server was fully stopped while you changed the file; an active process may write the old value back.
- Check that the line is spelled exactly
FirstTimeStartingWeaponand appears under[SandboxSettings]. - Test with a player who has never joined. Existing players may already have had their one-time starting assignment.
- If the result is unchanged on a fresh player, investigate whether the world stores sandbox settings internally or whether the host requires
-SandboxIniPath.
The file is ignored or the world fails to load the setting
- Restore the backup and compare the section header and line formatting with the original file.
- Remove duplicate
FirstTimeStartingWeaponlines; keep one value in the correct section. - Use an integer from the range your host documents. A host that supports only 0–5 may reject or ignore 6.
- Check that the edited file is in the world path, not merely in a local download directory on your computer.
Random is unavailable
Some host guides list only 0–5, while others list 6 as Random. If your panel rejects 6 or your build does not respond to it, choose a specific weapon from 1–5. Do not substitute a word such as Random; the documented configuration uses a numeric value.
The panel has no starting-weapon field
Panel support is not universal. Use the manual world-file method if the provider gives you file access and documents that route. If there is no file and no launch-parameter documentation, ask the provider which configuration source its server image uses before changing a live save.

Important limits and qualifications
- The value controls the weapon assigned by the first-time-starting system. It does not establish that every item a job, class, or other gameplay system provides will change.
- A separate guide claims that the Defense Analyst job starts with a Basic Baton. That claim is not confirmed by the sources establishing
FirstTimeStartingWeapon, so do not use it to infer how job equipment interacts with this setting. - There is no confirmed developer documentation or patch note in the available material establishing that the setting behaves identically in every 2026 build. Verify on the build and host you operate.
- Server-platform details are also not settled consistently: one source describes official dedicated-server support as Windows-only, while another describes running through Wine on Linux. Those claims do not change the configuration steps, but they are another reason to follow the instructions for your specific server image.
Recommended procedure
For a new server, stop the service, make a backup, set FirstTimeStartingWeapon before anyone joins, and restart. Use a value from the table that your host supports; choose 6 for Random only when the panel or documentation explicitly accepts it. For an existing world, treat the result as installation-dependent: test on a backup or separate world, and use the host’s documented -SandboxIniPath method if the server stores sandbox settings outside the world-folder file.
