To change an Enshrouded dedicated server’s listing name, stop the server, open enshrouded_server.json in the server’s root directory, replace the value of name, save valid JSON, and start the server again. If the server is rented, check the host’s control panel first: a Startup Parameters field labeled Server Name can override the value in the file.
What controls the name players see?
Enshrouded reads the dedicated server’s public name from the name setting in enshrouded_server.json. That value is displayed in the in-game server list, so every player searching for the server can see it. Choose a name that identifies the world without including offensive, abusive, or misleading wording.

If you edit the file while the process is running, Enshrouded can write its in-memory settings back to disk when it shuts down. That can erase your change. Stopping first is therefore part of the procedure, not an optional precaution.
Before you edit
Confirm that you are changing the dedicated server
This guide applies to an Enshrouded dedicated server. It does not change the name of a local single-player save or a temporary listen server. Make sure you have access to the machine, container, or hosting account that actually runs the dedicated server.

Record the current setting
Copy the existing enshrouded_server.json to a safe location before making changes. A backup gives you a known-good file to restore if the server fails to start or another setting is accidentally altered. On a hosted service, download the file through the panel’s file manager when that option is available.
Check for a panel-level name
Open the host’s startup or launch-settings page before editing the file. Look for a field named Server Name under Startup Parameters or a similar section. Some providers inject that value when the server starts, overriding the file’s name property. If such a field exists, use it as the primary setting and save the panel configuration.

Change the name in enshrouded_server.json
1. Stop the server completely
- Use the server console, service manager, or hosting panel to issue a normal stop.
- Wait until the process is shown as stopped and the console no longer reports shutdown activity.
- Do not edit while the status still says running, stopping, or restarting.
A clean stop matters because the game writes settings during shutdown. An edit made while the process is active can be replaced by the shutdown write.
2. Locate the configuration file
On a server you manage yourself, open the root folder used to launch the Enshrouded dedicated-server executable. The file you need is named exactly enshrouded_server.json. Do not create a second file with a similar name, change the extension, or edit an unrelated backup.

On a rented server, open the provider’s file manager or configuration editor and browse to the server root. Hosting interfaces differ, so the folder may be exposed as the installation directory, server files, or a configurable working directory. If the panel offers a dedicated Enshrouded configuration editor, it may be safer than editing raw files because it can preserve the provider’s file permissions and restart workflow.
3. Find the name property
Open the file in a plain-text or code editor. Search for the exact JSON property name. Replace only the text between its quotation marks. For example, change the line to:
"name": "Eldergrove Cooperative"Keep the property’s quotation marks, colon, comma placement, and surrounding braces intact. The value is a string; do not remove the quotes or convert it to a number, Boolean, or nested object. If the property is followed by another setting, retain the comma after the closing quote. If it is the final property in the object, do not add an extra trailing comma.
4. Preserve valid JSON
Save the file as JSON text, not as a word-processing document. Common mistakes include deleting a quote, using curly “smart” quotes, adding a comma before a closing brace, or inserting an unescaped quote inside the name. A name such as Rangers' Rest is normally fine because the apostrophe is not a JSON string delimiter; a name containing a double quote needs JSON escaping.

Keep all other properties unchanged. The name change requires editing the value, not reformatting or replacing the entire configuration. If your editor offers syntax highlighting or validation, use it before closing the file. Reported host guidance indicates that invalid syntax can cause the game to overwrite the file with defaults; this behavior is not documented consistently across all providers, so a backup is especially important.
5. Save, close, and start the server
- Save
enshrouded_server.jsonin the same folder and with the same filename. - Close the editor so the file is no longer locked or being rewritten.
- Start the server from the normal service command or hosting-panel button.
- Wait for the server to finish starting before checking the browser.
The new name should appear after the server registers again. Allow a minute or two for the server browser to refresh; an immediate search can still show the previous listing.
Changing the name on a hosted server
Use the control panel when it provides a Server Name field
For a managed server, open the panel’s startup configuration and locate Server Name. Enter the desired name, save the startup settings, and perform a full stop followed by a start. A panel setting under Startup Parameters can override enshrouded_server.json, so changing only the file may appear to have no effect.
Edit the file when no panel field exists
If the provider does not expose a name field, stop the server and use its file manager or config editor to open enshrouded_server.json. Change name as described above, save, and restart. Some panels regenerate configuration files when you apply a setting or reinstall the server; keep a local copy of your intended value so you can restore it if the provider resets the file.

When the panel and file disagree
Set the same name in both places when the interface permits it. Then stop and start the server rather than using only a quick reload. If the panel continues to replace the file value, the panel is the authoritative source and its support team must change or remove the overriding startup parameter.
How to choose a reliable server name
- Make it recognizable: Include a community name, play style, or region only when that information is accurate.
- Keep it readable: Avoid long strings of symbols that are difficult to search or distinguish in the browser.
- Use appropriate language: Names are visible to all players, so avoid offensive or targeted content.
- Do not imply settings you have not configured: A name promising a password-free, role-play, or special-rules server can mislead players if those conditions are not true.
- Preserve JSON-safe text: If you need quotation marks or unusual characters, confirm that your editor writes valid JSON escaping.
The name is a label, not a replacement for the server’s access controls, gameplay settings, or moderation rules. Change those settings separately if you want the actual rules of the world to differ.

The old name remains in the browser
- Confirm that the new value was saved to the actual
enshrouded_server.jsonused by the running service. - Check that the file contains the exact
nameproperty you edited, rather than a second copy in a backup or template folder. - Verify that the server completed a full stop and start after the edit.
- If the server is hosted, inspect the panel’s Startup Parameters for a Server Name override.
- Wait a minute or two, then refresh the server browser and search again.
A browser refresh delay can make a correct change look unsuccessful immediately after startup.
The name returns to its previous value
The most likely cause is an edit made while the server was running. Stop the server, make the change again, save it, and then start it. On a hosted service, a startup parameter or configuration template may also be rewriting the file; use the panel’s name field or ask the provider which setting is authoritative.

The server starts with a default configuration
Stop the service and compare the current file with the backup you made. Look for malformed JSON: missing quotation marks, a missing comma between properties, an extra comma before a closing brace, or an accidental change to the braces. Restore the backup if necessary, then make only the single name value change. If the file is repeatedly replaced, preserve the server logs and contact the host before making further edits.
The server will not start after the edit
Restore the pre-edit backup to determine whether the name edit introduced a syntax error. If the server starts with the backup, reapply the change using a JSON-aware editor and validate the file before saving. Do not delete unrelated settings to force a launch; that can create a separate configuration problem.

Treat the panel as the likely source of an override. Save the panel’s Server Name value, stop and start the server, and then allow the listing time to update. If the discrepancy persists, the provider may be applying a startup template after you save; request clarification about which field writes the final name value.
Updating the name after an Enshrouded update
Game updates can change installation files or hosting-panel templates, but the documented procedure still centers on enshrouded_server.json and its name property. After an update, verify that the file still exists in the server root and that the property is present before editing. A third-party claim that the April 21, 2026 “Forging the Path” update left the configuration schema unchanged has not been independently confirmed, so check the current file rather than assuming every older path or panel label is identical.
Back up the configuration before applying a major update, and recheck the panel’s startup settings afterward. If the update or host migration creates a new configuration file, apply the name to the active file only after the server has been stopped.
Quick checklist
- Server is fully stopped.
- Correct file:
enshrouded_server.jsonin the active server root. - Correct property:
name. - Only the quoted name value was changed.
- JSON punctuation and quotation marks remain valid.
- Hosted-panel Server Name override has been checked.
- File was saved before the server was started.
- Server was fully restarted.
- One or two minutes were allowed for browser propagation.
What success looks like
After a clean restart, the server list should display the new string while the rest of the server configuration remains unchanged. If it does not, the issue is usually one of three things: the wrong file was edited, a hosted-panel value is taking precedence, or the browser has not refreshed the listing yet. Checking those in that order avoids unnecessary configuration changes.
