Stop the server, open its current dedicatedserver.cfg file, change the value of "ServerName" while keeping the double quotes, save the JSON, and start the server again. On a managed host, make the same change in the panel’s Server Name setting or configuration-file editor. If the server rejects the file after the change, inspect the startup log for a JSON parse error.
What you are changing
The current dedicated-server configuration for Sons of the Forest uses a JSON file named dedicatedserver.cfg. The display name is stored under the "ServerName" key. In a default sample configuration, that value is "Sons Of The Forest Server (dedicated)".

The server must be stopped before you edit the file. After saving, restart it so the process reads the new value. Configuration syntax is important: this is JSON, not an old-style INI file. A malformed JSON document can prevent the server from loading, while an omitted setting can make the server fall back to its default.
Before you edit the configuration
- Confirm that you are changing the configuration for the dedicated server instance you actually run. A machine can contain more than one installation or data directory.
- Stop the server cleanly before opening the file. Do not edit a live file and assume the running process will reload it.
- Keep a backup copy of
dedicatedserver.cfg. A backup gives you a quick way to restore a known-good configuration if the server reports a parse error. - Use a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. The file must remain plain text containing valid JSON.
Change the name on a self-hosted Windows server
1. Stop the dedicated server
Stop the server using the method you normally use to run it, then wait for its process and console window to close. Editing while it is running can leave the process using the old value or overwrite your changes during shutdown.

2. Locate dedicatedserver.cfg
The default Windows location reported for the server data file is:
C:Users<user>AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestDSdedicatedserver.cfg
Replace <user> with the Windows account that runs the server. If the server was launched with the -userdatapath option, it uses that specified directory instead of the default location. Search the custom data directory for dedicatedserver.cfg rather than editing a similarly named file elsewhere.
3. Create the file by running the server once if necessary
If no configuration file exists in the expected directory, start the dedicated server once and allow it to initialize, then stop it. The default file is generated on the first run. Check the data directory again after that initialization.

4. Make a backup, then open the file
Copy dedicatedserver.cfg to a separate backup location before editing. Open the original in a plain-text editor. Do not rename it to .ini, and do not save it as a rich-text document.
5. Find the "ServerName" property
Use the editor’s search function to find "ServerName". It will appear as a JSON property with a quoted string value. Replace only the text between the value’s double quotes. For example:

"ServerName": "My Custom Server"Keep both sets of quotation marks: the quotation marks around the property name and the quotation marks around the server name. Unicode characters are reported to work, so names can include non-ASCII text, provided the editor saves the file as valid text.
6. Save without changing the JSON structure
Save the file in place as dedicatedserver.cfg. Keep the opening and closing braces, commas separating properties, and other settings unchanged. Do not paste an INI-style line such as serverName=My Custom Server into this file; that is a different format.

7. Restart and verify
Start the dedicated server again. Watch the startup output or log while it loads the configuration. A JSON parse error indicates that the file is syntactically invalid, usually because a quote, comma, brace, or other character was changed accidentally. Stop the server, restore the backup or correct the malformed line, and start it again.
Use a launch option instead of editing the file

If you use this approach, keep track of the launch command you maintain; a later change to the configuration file may not be visible when the startup command supplies a value.
The command-line method is an alternative to editing dedicatedserver.cfg. Do not combine its syntax with the older Server.cfg format described in older guides.

Change the name through a hosting panel
Managed hosts expose the same setting through their control panels, but labels and file editors differ. Stop the server first unless the panel explicitly handles the stop and restart for you.

A panel may write the file for you when you click Save, so do not edit a downloaded copy and assume it has been uploaded. Reopen the panel’s saved configuration or review the startup log after restarting to confirm that the server accepted the change.
JSON details that prevent common mistakes
The current file is JSON
Current dedicated-server builds use JSON in dedicatedserver.cfg. JSON requires double quotes for string keys and values. A name containing an apostrophe is normally fine inside double quotes, but an unescaped double quote inside the name would terminate the string and make the document invalid. If your chosen name contains a double quote, use a name without it or apply valid JSON escaping in your editor.
Do not remove neighboring properties
Change the value, not the surrounding object. A line may need a comma because another property follows it. Removing that comma, adding an extra comma where the parser does not allow one, or deleting a brace can stop the configuration from loading. When in doubt, compare the edited file with your backup and change only the characters in the server-name value.

Missing versus malformed settings
If a setting is missing, the server can fall back to its default. Malformed JSON is more serious: the server may fail while loading the configuration. A startup log that mentions a JSON parse error points to file syntax, not to the length or wording of the name itself.

A custom data path is in use
Look at the command that launches the server for -userdatapath. The directory supplied to that option is the authoritative location for the generated configuration. The default path under AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestDS may remain empty or contain a different instance.
The server has never completed its first run
Run it once, let initialization finish, stop it, and then check the data directory. The default dedicatedserver.cfg is generated during that first run.
You are looking at an old tutorial’s filename
Older community instructions refer to a plain-text Server.cfg and a lower-case or differently named serverName parameter. Those instructions describe a different configuration format. Do not paste their line into the current JSON file, and do not rename the current file to match an old tutorial.
Troubleshoot a name change that did not work

A safe repeatable workflow
- Record whether the server is self-hosted or panel-hosted and identify the instance’s data directory.
- Stop the server completely.
- Back up the current configuration file, or use the panel’s configuration backup if it provides one.
- Open the active
dedicatedserver.cfgand locate"ServerName". - Replace only the quoted value, keeping valid JSON and the exact filename.
- Save the file, start the server, and watch the startup log.
- If the server reports a parse error or the name does not change, stop it and verify the path, launch arguments, and backup before trying again.
This procedure applies to the current JSON-based dedicated-server configuration. File paths, key names, and panel labels can change with game builds, so a future update may require checking the generated configuration and the host’s current interface again.
