Find the configuration file used by the running redis-server, make a dated backup, change the directive, and restart the matching service. On Debian-family packages, the usual file is /etc/redis/redis.conf, but systemd units, source builds, containers, and multiple Redis instances can use other paths. For directives that support live changes, CONFIG GET and CONFIG SET change and inspect the running server without a restart; use CONFIG REWRITE only after checking what will be written back.
The important distinction is persistence. Editing the active file survives a restart, while a live CONFIG SET is normally temporary unless you deliberately persist the eligible value. Network changes also have a security dimension: bind only to interfaces that need Redis, firewall the port, and use ACL authentication for modern deployments.
Identify the Redis service and the configuration file it actually uses
Do not assume that the first redis.conf you find is active. Redis can start with a file, with command-line options, or with its built-in defaults. A systemd unit may pass a completely different file to redis-server, and a host running several instances can have one configuration per instance.
Inspect the systemd unit
Start by listing likely units:
systemctl list-unit-files --type=service | grep -i redis
systemctl status redis-server
systemctl status redis
Use the unit name that exists on your machine. Then display its complete definition, including drop-ins and the command used to start Redis:

sudo systemctl cat redis-server
Replace redis-server with redis if that is the installed unit. Look for an ExecStart= line such as /usr/bin/redis-server /etc/redis/redis.conf. Everything after the executable is significant: it may be a configuration path, a port-specific argument, or another override.
Inspect the running process
If the unit name is unclear, inspect the process command line:
ps -ef | grep '[r]edis-server'
The output often shows the address and port followed by the configuration path. On systems using a supervisor other than systemd, the process command line is usually the most reliable clue. You can also inspect the parent process and open files when several instances are present.
Typical locations by deployment model
| Deployment | Where to look | What can differ |
|---|---|---|
| Debian or Ubuntu package | /etc/redis/redis.conf is a common default |
The installed unit name, package version, or a local override may select another file. |
| Custom systemd unit | The path in that unit’s ExecStart |
Any absolute path can be supplied, and drop-in files can replace the original command. |
| Source or manually installed Redis | The file or command-line arguments chosen by the administrator | No single distribution path is guaranteed; the path is not stated by the installation method alone. |
| Container or orchestrated instance | The file mounted into the container and the container command | The host path, container path, and service name may all be different. |
| Multiple instances | Each instance’s own unit and command line | Ports, data directories, PID files, and configuration files must be matched to the same instance. |
Redis can run without a configuration file by using built-in defaults, but that arrangement is intended for testing and development rather than a managed production service. If the process has no file argument, record the command-line options before deciding where a persistent configuration should live.
Back up the active file and capture a baseline
Make the backup from the path used by the running service, not from a similarly named sample file. A timestamped copy gives you a straightforward rollback:
sudo cp -a /etc/redis/redis.conf "/etc/redis/redis.conf.$(date +%F-%H%M%S).bak"
Use the actual path discovered in the previous section. Keep the backup owned and readable in the same administrative context as the original; do not make a world-readable copy if it contains credentials.

Record the current live value before editing. For a local instance with the default port:
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 -p 6379 CONFIG GET port
If authentication is enabled, authenticate without putting a secret directly in shell history. For example, set REDISCLI_AUTH for the command’s environment:
REDISCLI_AUTH='admin-secret' redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 -p 6379 CONFIG GET port
Use a secret-management mechanism appropriate to your host instead of copying the example credential. Save the output, the date, the instance address and port, and the file checksum if you need an auditable before-and-after record.
Edit Redis directives with the correct syntax
Redis configuration uses a directive followed by one or more arguments, one directive per line. Lines beginning with # are comments. A later directive can override an earlier one, and an include can add more directives, so the effective value depends on ordering.
Common changes
| Goal | Example line | Operational effect |
|---|---|---|
| Change the TCP port | port 6380 |
Redis listens on TCP port 6380 instead of the default 6379, provided the port is available. |
| Keep Redis local | bind 127.0.0.1 ::1 |
Only local IPv4 and IPv6 clients can reach the listener. |
| Bind to a required private interface | bind 127.0.0.1 10.20.30.15 |
Redis listens on loopback and the specified private address; the address must exist on the server. |
| Choose the data directory | dir /var/lib/redis |
Relative persistence files are written under that directory, which must exist and be writable by the Redis service account. |
| Set the legacy password option | requirepass example-secret-rotate-me |
Clients must authenticate, but this is the older all-users authentication model; ACLs are preferred for new deployments. |
Values containing spaces must follow Redis’s configuration quoting rules. Preserve comments that explain why a non-default value exists, especially for network bindings and include files.
Understand includes and ordering
An include directive loads another file. If two files define the same setting, the value encountered later is generally the one that takes effect. Keep environment-specific overrides deliberate: name them clearly, restrict their permissions, and document which file is authoritative. A runtime rewrite does not rewrite the contents of included files, so a value managed in an include can reappear after a restart even if the main file was rewritten.

Apply file edits with a restart
After saving the file, confirm that the service unit you inspected points to it, then restart that specific instance:
sudo systemctl restart redis-server
sudo systemctl status --no-pager redis-server
If your host uses the redis unit, use that name instead. A restart stops and starts Redis, so clients can see a short interruption. It is normally required for file-based edits because Redis reads the configuration during startup; a generic systemctl reload is not a substitute unless the installed unit and Redis version explicitly implement a safe reload action.

For a change that must be applied with minimal interruption, first determine whether the directive supports runtime reconfiguration. Do not assume that every line in redis.conf can be changed live.
Change a supported setting without restarting
Redis exposes the running configuration through two administrative commands:
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 -p 6379 CONFIG GET port
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 -p 6379 CONFIG SET port 6380
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 -p 6380 CONFIG GET port
The last command uses the new port, so the client connection must be able to follow the listener. For a protected instance, provide authentication through your normal secure method. If the parameter is not runtime-configurable, Redis returns an error and the file-and-restart method is required.
Persistence and service impact
| Approach | Survives restart? | Downtime | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edit the active file, then restart | Yes, assuming this is the file the unit reads | Usually a brief service interruption | Planned changes, network settings, and parameters that are startup-only. |
CONFIG SET only |
Usually no | Avoids a restart | Testing a supported value or making an urgent, reversible live adjustment. |
CONFIG SET followed by CONFIG REWRITE |
For eligible values, yes | Avoids a service restart | Persisting a reviewed live change when the active file is writable and managed appropriately. |
CONFIG REWRITE updates the configuration file Redis considers active, but it does not rewrite included files. Review the resulting file and your deployment’s ownership and change-control rules before using it. Keep an explicit record of runtime changes; otherwise a later operator may not know why the generated file differs from its source include.

Change the Redis port step by step
- Identify the instance. Confirm its unit, active configuration path, current address, and current port with
systemctl cat, the process command line, andCONFIG GET port. - Back up the file. Create the dated copy described earlier and verify that it is the file named by
ExecStart. - Check the target port. Pick an approved unused port and check listeners before editing:
sudo ss -ltnp. A port already owned by another process will prevent startup. - Edit the directive. Change or add one deliberate line, such as
port 6380. Remove or correct an earlier conflicting line if an include would override it. - Update the firewall before testing clients. Allow the new port only from approved sources, and remove the old rule after migration. For a host using UFW, an example restricted rule is
sudo ufw allow from 192.0.2.10 to any port 6380 proto tcp; use your real trusted source address and firewall policy. - Restart the matching unit. Run
sudo systemctl restart redis-serverand immediately checksystemctl status redis-server. - Verify locally. Run
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 -p 6380 PING; a healthy, authenticated connection returnsPONG. - Verify the effective value and listener. Query
CONFIG GET porton the new endpoint and confirm the socket withsudo ss -ltnp | grep 6380. Update application connection strings only after these checks pass.
If clients fail after the change, test from the Redis host first. A local success with a remote failure usually points to the bind address or firewall rather than the Redis port directive itself.
Allow remote connections safely
Redis should remain loopback-only when all clients run on the same server. Remote access requires three controls working together: the listener address, the network firewall, and authentication.
Bind only to needed interfaces
Set bind to loopback plus the specific private interface required by your clients, for example:
bind 127.0.0.1 10.20.30.15
Do not bind to every interface merely to make a connection test pass. Confirm that 10.20.30.15 is assigned to the server, and remember that IPv6 may need its own explicit address if clients use it. Keep protected mode enabled unless you have a documented reason to change it.

Redis security guidance recommends firewalling the Redis port on an internet-facing host. Permit only the application servers, management network, or other approved sources. A listener on a private address is not a replacement for a firewall: routing, cloud security groups, or an unexpected interface can still make it reachable.
Use ACLs for modern authentication
The requirepass directive is a legacy, single-password mechanism. Redis 6 and later recommend Access Control Lists, which let you create named users with narrowly scoped commands and key patterns. A conceptual example for an application user is:

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 -p 6379 ACL SETUSER app on '>long-random-secret' '~cache:*' '+get' '+set' '+del'
The shell-quoted > prefix tells Redis to set the user’s password; generate a unique high-entropy secret and store it in your secret manager. Restrict key patterns and commands to what the application actually needs. Test the account with a separate client, and retain an administrative account for controlled maintenance. Do not expose an unauthenticated Redis listener to the internet.
Verify every change
Check service health and logs
sudo systemctl status --no-pager redis-server
sudo journalctl -u redis-server -n 100 --no-pager
Use the exact unit name from your host. Logs commonly reveal a syntax error, a missing directory, permission denial, an unavailable port, or an address that is not assigned.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the protocol and effective setting
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 -p 6380 PING
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 -p 6380 CONFIG GET port
redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 -p 6380 CONFIG GET bind
Run these against the intended host and port. A NOAUTH response means the endpoint is reachable but requires authentication; supply credentials through a secure mechanism rather than disabling authentication for a test.
Check the operating-system listener
sudo ss -ltnp | grep redis
The output should show the expected address and port. If it shows only 127.0.0.1, remote clients cannot connect even if the firewall allows them. If it shows no listener, inspect the service log before making another edit.
Troubleshoot common failures
The edit had no effect
- The service is reading a different file. Recheck
systemctl catand the process command line. - An
includelater in the load order overrides your value. Search all included files and make the intended override explicit. - You changed the file but did not restart, and the directive is not runtime-configurable.
- A command-line option supplied by the unit overrides the file. Correct the unit or drop-in, then reload systemd’s unit definition if you changed it.
Redis will not start after editing
- Read
journalctlfor the exact line and directive reported. - Check that the
direxists and is writable by the Redis service account. - Check that the selected port is free and that every bound address exists on the host.
- Restore the dated backup if you need to recover service quickly, then restart and investigate the change offline.
Remote clients time out
- Confirm the listener with
ss; a loopback-only bind cannot accept remote traffic. - Confirm the firewall, cloud security group, and host routing allow the approved source to the selected port.
- Test with the server’s private address from an approved client, not with a public address that the server does not own.
Clients receive an authentication error
- Use the correct username and password for the configured ACL user.
- If you changed from
requirepassto ACLs, update clients to send the intended username as well as the password. - Do not solve an authentication failure by opening the port or turning off protected mode.
Handle containers and multiple instances deliberately
In a container, editing /etc/redis/redis.conf on the host may do nothing if that path is not mounted into the container. Inspect the container command and mounts, edit the configuration source managed by your deployment system, then recreate or restart the container according to that system’s procedure. Verify from inside the container and from the client network.
For multiple systemd instances, pair every unit with its own configuration, port, data directory, and logs. Never restart a generic unit while intending to change only one instance. Use the instance-specific unit name, inspect its ExecStart, and run redis-cli against that instance’s port before and after the change.

- Stop application traffic or place the application in its documented maintenance mode if the configuration change affects connectivity.
- Stop the affected Redis unit:
sudo systemctl stop redis-server. - Copy the known-good backup over the active path, preserving ownership and permissions:
sudo cp -a /etc/redis/redis.conf.2026-10-15-120000.bak /etc/redis/redis.conf. Use the actual backup filename you created. - Start the same unit and inspect its status and recent journal entries.
- Run
PING, query the restored setting, and confirm the expected socket withss. - Revert any firewall or application connection-string changes that were made for the failed configuration.
If the change was made only with CONFIG SET, restore the previous value with another CONFIG SET when possible, or restart from the reviewed file. Record the rollback so a subsequent CONFIG REWRITE does not unexpectedly reintroduce the unwanted value.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist
- Identify the exact unit, process arguments, and active configuration path.
- Create a dated, permission-safe backup before editing.
- Capture the current live value with
CONFIG GET. - Check directive ordering and included files.
- For remote access, bind only to required interfaces, firewall the port, and use ACL authentication.
- Use
CONFIG SETonly for supported live parameters, and understand that it may not persist. - Review the file before using
CONFIG REWRITE; included files are not rewritten. - Restart the correct instance for file-based changes.
- Verify with
PING,CONFIG GET, service logs, and socket inspection. - Keep the backup and a written record until clients and monitoring confirm the change.
