Change a Sponge server’s plugin location by editing the plugins-dir value inside the sponge { general { } } block of global.conf, then restart the server. Set the value to either a folder relative to the server’s execution root or an absolute path, create that folder, and move the plugin JAR files into it.
Do not use this setting for Mixin-based plugins: those must remain in the server’s mods folder. Also check your Sponge API version first, because the documented default differs between API generations.

What plugins-dir changes
Sponge uses the plugins-dir setting to add a folder to its plugin search path. The setting belongs to the global Sponge configuration, not to an individual plugin configuration file:

}The path can be relative to the server’s execution root or written as an absolute filesystem path. A relative path is usually easier to move between machines; an absolute path is useful when plugins are stored on a separate volume or outside the game directory.

This setting controls where Sponge looks for plugin JARs. It does not relocate every file associated with a plugin. Plugin configuration files are controlled separately by config-dir, so changing plugins-dir does not automatically move the server’s configuration directory.
Mixin-based plugins are a separate case. They must remain inside mods even when an additional plugin directory is configured. Moving one of those JARs to the new plugin folder can prevent it from loading.
Check the Sponge API version before changing anything
The default location is not described identically across Sponge documentation, so do not assume that every server uses the same folder. The Sponge 8.0.0 quick start separates the defaults by API generation, while the Sponge 7.4.0 configuration documentation describes a default based on the canonical mods directory. The Sponge 8.0.0 installation page also discusses plugins under mods/plugins and custom locations. Use the API version and the configuration shipped with your build as the authority for your server.

For Sponge 8, the global file is normally created at config/sponge/global.conf in the server folder. Other builds may use an equivalent Sponge global-configuration location. If your installation uses a different filename or directory, use the file created by that build rather than creating a second configuration file that Sponge will ignore.
Move plugins to a different directory
- Stop the server cleanly. Shut down the Sponge server before editing its configuration or moving JAR files. This prevents the process from writing over your changes and avoids moving files while they are being read.
- Back up the configuration and plugin folders. Copy
global.confand the current plugin directory to a safe location. A backup lets you restore the previous search path if the server starts without its plugins. - Open the global Sponge configuration. On Sponge 8, open
config/sponge/global.confin the server’s game directory. On another build, open that build’s equivalent global configuration file. - Find the
spongeblock and itsgeneralblock. The setting must be nested in this section. Do not put it at the top level, inside a plugin’s own configuration, or in a separate file. - Set
plugins-dirto the target folder. Use a quoted path. For a folder namedpluginsin the server’s execution root, the entry can be:

}- Create the target directory. Make the folder before starting the server. If the value is relative, create it relative to the directory from which the server executes. If you use an absolute path, create that exact path and make sure the account running the server can read it.
- Move the plugin JAR files. Move ordinary Sponge plugin JARs from the old location into the new directory. Leave Mixin-based plugins in
mods. Do not leave two copies of the same plugin in both locations, because duplicate copies can cause loading conflicts. - Start the server and check plugin loading. Watch the startup output for errors and confirm that the expected plugins are recognized. If the server starts but the plugins are absent, stop it and work through the troubleshooting section rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Choose the path syntax
Relative path in the server root
A relative value keeps the plugin directory alongside the game files. This is the simplest arrangement when the server and plugins are backed up or moved together:

plugins-dir="plugins"Create a plugins directory in the server’s execution root. The exact root is the directory Sponge treats as the game or execution directory when the server starts; it is not necessarily the directory containing your text editor’s shortcut or control-panel installation.
Path using the canonical game directory
Hosting guides commonly show the canonical game-directory variable when the desired folder is in the game root:

}This expresses the same layout while making the intended game root explicit. Variable handling can differ between platforms and older builds, so test the current server after saving the file. An older report specifically suggested that SpongeVanilla did not read a ${CANONICAL_GAME_DIR} value in a Sponge 6-era setup, while SpongeForge did; that report is not confirmation of behavior in current releases. If the variable form fails, use a path syntax documented for your build or an absolute path.
Absolute path outside the game directory
An absolute value points Sponge directly to a directory elsewhere on the machine:
plugins-dir="/srv/my-sponge-plugins"Use the path format required by the operating system. The server process must have permission to traverse the parent directories and read the JAR files. An absolute path also means that restoring or moving the server requires an additional directory migration; record it in your deployment notes.

Keep plugin files and plugin configuration separate
Changing plugins-dir changes the location Sponge searches for plugin binaries. It does not, by itself, change the location of plugin data. The separate config-dir setting controls configuration folders, whose default is commonly /config.
That distinction matters during a migration:
- Move the plugin JARs to the directory named by
plugins-dir. - Leave existing plugin configuration files where the server’s
config-dirpoints unless you are deliberately changing that setting too. - Do not copy configuration files into the new plugin directory expecting Sponge to discover them there.
- Back up both the JAR directory and the configuration directory before making a large move.
If a plugin starts with default settings after the move, first check that its configuration files are still in the configured config directory. A changed binary path and a changed configuration path are independent operations.
Restart versus reload
A full restart is the safest way to apply a new plugin directory. Sponge’s stable installation guidance says the server must be restarted to change plugins. Stop the process, save global.conf, create the target directory, move the JARs, and start the server again.
Sponge 8 configuration documentation also describes reloading global configuration with:
/sponge reload -gReloading can be useful when you are testing a configuration edit, but it is not a substitute for a restart when plugin discovery or plugin lifecycle behavior is involved. If you use the reload command, make sure the command is accepted by your exact build and still perform a clean restart if the new directory is not reflected immediately. Do not remove or move active JARs while the server is running.

Troubleshoot a plugin directory that is not working
The server starts but no plugins from the new folder load
- Confirm that the key is spelled exactly
plugins-dir, including the hyphen. - Confirm that it is inside
sponge { general { } }in the global Sponge file. - Check that you edited the file belonging to the server instance you actually started. Hosting panels sometimes expose several game directories.
- Check whether the path is relative to the execution root you expected. A relative value can point somewhere different when the server is launched by a service or panel.
- Verify that the target directory exists and contains the plugin JARs, not compressed archives, shortcuts, or files left in the old directory.
- Perform a complete restart after saving the file.
The path appears correct, but the server cannot read it
For an absolute or outside-the-game path, check filesystem permissions for the operating-system account running Sponge. The account needs access to every parent directory as well as the JAR files themselves. Correct the permissions or choose a directory within the server’s accessible tree, then restart.
A Mixin-based plugin stopped working
Move that plugin back into mods. The plugins-dir setting does not override the requirement that Mixin-based plugins reside in the mods folder.
The configuration change seems to be ignored
Look for syntax damage around the sponge and general braces. HOCON nesting must remain balanced, and the path should be a quoted string. Compare the edited file with the backup and make one change at a time. Also verify the build’s exact configuration filename; Sponge 8 uses global.conf, but an equivalent file may be used elsewhere.

Replace the variable expression with a path syntax supported by your build. The historical SpongeVanilla report about ${CANONICAL_GAME_DIR} concerns an older setup and should not be generalized to every current SpongeVanilla release. Testing the literal path on the current server is safer than assuming variable expansion works.
Plugins load twice or behave inconsistently
Stop the server and search the old and new locations for duplicate copies of the same JAR. Keep one copy in the intended directory and leave Mixin-based files in mods. Duplicate files can make it unclear which copy Sponge is attempting to load.

Recommended layouts
API 7-style layout
For a build following the Sponge 7 documentation’s default, ordinary plugins may be kept under the canonical mods directory’s plugin subfolder:

└── ...If you choose a different folder, set plugins-dir explicitly and preserve the separate mods location for Mixin-based plugins.
Game-root layout
A custom game-root folder keeps ordinary plugin JARs separate from the mods tree:

└── ...Use either plugins-dir="plugins" or the canonical-game-directory form supported by your build. The directory layout alone does not activate the move; the configuration key must point to it.
Migration checklist
- Identify the Sponge API version and whether the server is SpongeForge or SpongeVanilla.
- Locate the active global Sponge configuration file.
- Back up
global.conf, the current plugin directory, and plugin configuration data. - Stop the server before editing.
- Set
plugins-dirundersponge { general { } }. - Use a quoted relative or absolute path that your build supports.
- Create the target directory and verify its permissions.
- Move ordinary plugin JARs; keep Mixin-based plugins in
mods. - Do not move plugin configuration files unless you also intend to change
config-dir. - Restart the server and inspect startup behavior.
- If the change fails, restore the backup and test the path, nesting, filename, and platform-specific behavior individually.
What to remember about Sponge plugin locations
The reliable part of the procedure is the configuration key and its scope: edit plugins-dir in the global Sponge configuration’s sponge.general block, create the destination, move ordinary plugin JARs, and restart. The default path is version-dependent, so API 7 documentation, API 8 quick-start guidance, and the installation page should not be treated as interchangeable. Mixin-based plugins remain in mods, and plugin configuration files remain governed by config-dir.
