Change the URL where phpMyAdmin is published in your web server or reverse-proxy configuration—not usually in phpMyAdmin itself. Replace the active Apache Alias, virtual-host rule, Nginx location, proxy rewrite, or container routing so a new path such as /db-console/ reaches the phpMyAdmin installation. Reload the front-end service, sign in, edit and save a table row, and only then retire the old route.
Set $cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] in config.inc.php only when phpMyAdmin cannot discover the public URL, for example behind port forwarding or a complex reverse proxy. Its value must be the complete HTTPS address, including the path and a trailing slash.
What actually changes when you rename the URL
A browser requests a public path, while phpMyAdmin runs from a document directory or an upstream application. The component that connects those two is the web server or proxy. Changing a directory name on disk, or changing a label inside phpMyAdmin, does not by itself create a new public address.
For example, the browser might use https://example.com/db-console/ while Apache maps that path to the installed phpMyAdmin directory. With a proxy, the browser sees the public prefix and the upstream service may see a different path. The mapping must be internally consistent so redirects, cookies, generated links, and form submissions retain the prefix.

URL paths are commonly case sensitive. Decide the exact spelling and whether the public address ends with a slash before editing anything. Treat the old route as an access path that must be removed or deliberately redirected after the replacement has passed testing.
Identify where your deployment controls the path
Use the deployment type to find the configuration that owns the public URL. Package layouts and file names vary, so inspect the active virtual host, proxy configuration, or container definition rather than assuming a universal path.

If you are unsure, open the address currently used to reach phpMyAdmin and trace the request path: identify the TLS terminator, reverse proxy, web server, and finally the PHP or container service. Edit the layer that maps the browser-visible path to the application.
Choose and plan the new access path
Use a stable, unambiguous path
Pick one canonical path, such as /db-console/, and use the same case everywhere. Avoid changing the path again while troubleshooting; otherwise it becomes difficult to tell whether a failure comes from routing or application detection.
Preserve slash normalization
Many servers treat /db-console and /db-console/ differently. Keep the trailing-slash behavior expected by the server and phpMyAdmin. If the server redirects the slashless form, make sure the redirect points to the new prefix rather than the old one.
Record a rollback
Save a copy of the active proxy or virtual-host configuration before editing. Note the old mapping and the service you will reload. A rollback is simply restoring that mapping and reloading the same front-end service.
Change an Apache installation
Find the active mapping
Locate the enabled virtual host or included configuration that exposes phpMyAdmin. The relevant directive is commonly an Alias, although some installations use a directory or virtual-host rule instead. Confirm that the file you edit is actually included by the running Apache instance.

Replace the public prefix
Change only the URL-side prefix while retaining the real phpMyAdmin document directory. A conceptual mapping looks like this:
Alias /db-console/ /path/to/phpmyadmin/The directory path above is an example of the relationship, not a universal installation location. Use the directory already referenced by your active configuration. Keep the prefix’s case and trailing slash consistent with any accompanying <Directory> permissions and rewrite rules.
Check for competing rules
Another virtual host, alias, or broad rewrite can claim the same path. Search the active configuration for both the old and new prefixes. Remove an accidental duplicate before reloading; otherwise requests may reach the wrong directory or host.

Validate and reload
Run the configuration test supplied by your operating system’s Apache package, then reload Apache through the service manager used by that system. A reload applies the mapping without unnecessarily stopping the server. If validation reports an error, restore the saved file and correct it before attempting another reload.
Change an Nginx and PHP-FPM installation
Update the location block
In the server block that receives the request, change the location prefix from the old path to the new one. The block must still point PHP requests to the actual phpMyAdmin installation and pass them to the intended PHP-FPM upstream.

}This fragment illustrates the public prefix only; do not replace working root, alias, try_files, or FastCGI settings with generic values. Nginx configurations differ substantially between distribution packages and custom installations.
Keep script resolution aligned
If the URL prefix changes but the FastCGI script path still assumes the old prefix, the page may load while PHP files return not found errors, downloads, or upstream failures. Verify that a request for a phpMyAdmin PHP script resolves to the installation directory and not to a path formed by duplicating or omitting the prefix.

Test and reload Nginx
Use Nginx’s configuration-test command before reloading the service. Then reload Nginx with the service manager appropriate to your operating system. Check the error log immediately if the new path returns a gateway error or blank response.
Put phpMyAdmin behind a reverse proxy
Map the public prefix to the upstream
Change the proxy rule so requests for the new external prefix are forwarded to the phpMyAdmin upstream path. Decide whether the upstream application should receive the prefix or a root-relative path, and apply that decision consistently. A proxy that strips the prefix must do so for every relevant request; a proxy that preserves it must send the same form the upstream expects.
Watch for duplicated and missing prefixes
Two common mistakes are forwarding /db-console/db-console/ after both layers append the prefix, and stripping /db-console/ so redirects point to the site root. Inspect the first HTML response and the browser’s network requests. Links, form actions, redirects, and static assets should all remain under the intended public path.
Account for cookies and redirects
Login can appear to succeed and then immediately return to the login page when the proxy gives the session cookie an unusable path or host. Redirects can likewise send the browser to the old route. Preserve the public host, scheme, and path information that the application needs, and configure cookie or header rewriting where your proxy requires it.
Use an absolute URL override when detection fails
Port forwarding and complex proxy chains can hide the browser-visible address from phpMyAdmin. In that case, set the override described in the next section rather than trying random rewrite combinations.
Expose a Docker deployment at a new path
Separate port publishing from path publishing
Docker port mapping controls which host port reaches the container; it does not automatically create a subdirectory URL. If you only need a different port, change the host-side port mapping and keep the container’s application path intact. If you need https://example.com/db-console/, place a web server or reverse proxy in front of the container and add an explicit path rewrite.
Rewrite the subdirectory deliberately
Forward the chosen external prefix to the path served by the phpMyAdmin container. Ensure that the proxy’s slash handling matches the container route. A container can be healthy while the browser still fails because the proxy sends an unexpected prefix.

Redeploy and inspect logs
Apply the compose or container configuration through your normal deployment workflow, then inspect both proxy and container logs. Confirm that the container receives requests after the route change and that the response does not contain links to the old path.

phpMyAdmin normally derives its public address from the request. The configuration setting is an override for deployments where that information is incomplete or altered by forwarding:
$cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] = 'https://example.com/db-console/';The value is the complete URL to the phpMyAdmin directory, including the scheme, host, full path, and a trailing slash. Use the externally visible HTTPS address, not an internal hostname, container name, or backend port. The phpMyAdmin configuration reference describes this as the complete URL, with the full path, to the installation directory.
Do not set the option merely because you changed the Alias or location. An unnecessary override can preserve a stale host or path after a later migration. If the public URL changes again, update or remove the override so it does not conflict with the proxy’s current behavior.
Reload safely without assuming one service layout
There is no single configuration-file location or service name shared by every distribution. Use the service-management command for the front end that actually serves the request. Typical service names include Apache or Nginx variants, but confirm yours before running a command.

- Correct every reported error before applying the change.
- Reload the front-end service rather than stopping it when the platform supports a reload.
- Check the service status and error log for the first request to the new path.
- If the reload fails, restore the saved configuration, validate it, and reload again.
Reloading only PHP-FPM will not change an Apache, Nginx, or proxy route. Conversely, changing a container without reloading the external proxy leaves the browser-facing path unchanged.

- Open the canonical HTTPS URL with its trailing slash, for example
https://example.com/db-console/. - Confirm that the address does not redirect to the old prefix, an internal hostname, or an unexpected port.
- Sign in and confirm the session remains active after navigating to another page.
- Browse a database and open a table.
- Edit a harmless row or other test value and save it.
- Reload the table and verify that the saved change is displayed.
- Check browser requests for missing CSS, JavaScript, images, or PHP responses under the old path.
- Sign out and sign in again to test cookie persistence from a fresh session.
Editing and saving a table row is a useful check because it exercises generated links, form actions, session cookies, redirects, and the application’s understanding of its public URL.
Retire the old route after testing
Once the new address passes the full check, remove or disable the old Alias, location, or proxy rule. Leaving both paths active creates two administrative entry points and makes it unclear which URL should be protected and monitored.

If users or automation legitimately depend on the former address, create a deliberate redirect to the canonical path and test its slash and scheme behavior. Do not leave an accidental duplicate mapping in place. Update bookmarks, operational documentation, health checks, and access-control rules to use the new URL.
Troubleshoot common failures

Change one layer at a time and retest. If the response changes from a 404 to a gateway error, routing is probably reaching a different layer and the next investigation should move to that layer’s logs.
Security work that still matters after renaming the path
A less obvious URL is not an authentication boundary. Anyone who discovers the route can still request it, and scanners can find common paths. Apply the security controls recommended for phpMyAdmin independently of the naming change.
- Serve phpMyAdmin over HTTPS and preferably enable HSTS for the site when your entire deployment is ready for that policy.
- Disable production

testandsetupdirectories from the production installation. - Choose an authentication mode appropriate to the server and database environment.
- Restrict access by source network, firewall, VPN, or an equivalent control where feasible.
- Enable two-factor authentication when supported by your deployment.
- Consider an HTTP authentication proxy as an additional gate in front of phpMyAdmin.
- Keep phpMyAdmin updated when security announcements are published.
- Monitor authentication failures and investigate unexpected access attempts.
Apply these controls to the canonical route and to any temporary redirect. If the old path remains reachable through another virtual host or proxy, it must receive the same protections until it is removed.

Final operational checklist
- The deployment type and active routing layer are known.
- The chosen path has one spelling, one case, and a defined trailing-slash behavior.
- Apache, Nginx, the proxy, or the container mapping points the new prefix to the real phpMyAdmin service.
- FastCGI or upstream routing resolves PHP requests without duplicating or stripping the prefix unexpectedly.
PmaAbsoluteUriis absent unless autodetection fails; when present, it is the complete HTTPS URL with a trailing slash.- The front-end configuration passes its syntax test and reloads successfully.
- Navigation, login, table browsing, row editing, saving, assets, redirects, and sign-out/sign-in work at the new URL.
- The old route is removed or intentionally redirected.
- HTTPS, access restrictions, authentication hardening, updates, and monitoring cover the new entry point.
