On most cPanel hosts, you change PHP outside WordPress: open cPanel, select Select PHP Version (also called PHP Selector), choose a version, and apply it. Back up your files and database and run a PHP compatibility check first. Afterward, confirm the active version in WordPress → Tools → Site Health → Info → Server. If several domains share one cPanel account, use MultiPHP Manager when each site needs its own PHP version.
What changing PHP does—and where the setting lives
PHP is the server-side runtime that executes WordPress core, themes and plugins. WordPress itself does not provide a control for changing the server’s PHP runtime. The setting belongs to your hosting environment, so the exact procedure depends on the control panel and hosting plan.

This guide covers the common cPanel workflow. Labels vary: a host may call the tool Select PHP Version, PHP Selector or, for per-domain configuration, Per Domain Settings. If none of those tools appears, your host may manage PHP centrally or may not permit customer-controlled changes.
Which PHP version should WordPress use in 2026?
Use the newest PHP release that your complete WordPress stack supports reliably, rather than choosing solely by WordPress core compatibility. The official WordPress position as of October 14, 2026 is:

There is no announced date for another minimum-PHP increase. The WordPress project uses a 5% usage baseline when deciding whether to retire a PHP version. That policy is not a promise that any particular branch will remain safe or available at your host.
Usage statistics discussed by the WordPress Core team in September 2026 indicated that roughly 18% of websites still used PHP 7.4. That figure is context, not a recommendation: PHP 7.4 is the supported floor, while 8.3 or newer is the recommended target.

Choosing between 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5
- Choose 8.3 or newer when your extensions, theme and plugins have been checked and your host offers it as a stable option.
- Stay temporarily on a supported older branch only when a required plugin or theme has a documented incompatibility. Plan a replacement or update rather than treating the older runtime as a permanent solution.
- Test 8.5 deliberately if it is available. WordPress 6.9 and 7.0 support it, but third-party code can lag behind core.
Prepare before switching PHP
A PHP change can expose obsolete code immediately. Complete these checks while the site is still working:
- Record the current state. Note the current PHP version, WordPress version, active theme, important plugins, scheduled tasks and any custom code. This makes a later comparison possible.
- Update carefully. Bring WordPress, the active theme and plugins to their latest versions that your current PHP branch supports. Remove abandoned plugins you no longer need.
- Create a full backup. Save both the WordPress files and the database, and confirm that the backup can be downloaded or restored. A database-only export does not preserve themes, plugins or uploaded media.
- Run a PHP compatibility check. Use a compatibility-checking plugin or an equivalent staging test to identify deprecated functions, incompatible extensions and likely plugin or theme failures. Treat warnings as work items, not proof that the change is safe.
- Use staging when possible. Clone the site into a staging environment, select the target PHP version there, and test login, the front end, forms, checkout, search, media uploads, cron-driven tasks and any integrations.
- Plan a maintenance window. Choose a low-traffic period and ensure you can reach cPanel and your backup location if the site fails.
How to change PHP version in cPanel with PHP Selector
This is the most common path on cPanel shared hosting. Your host may use slightly different labels or button text.

- Sign in to your hosting account and open cPanel.
- In the Software section, click Select PHP Version. If that name is absent, look for PHP Selector.
- Open the version drop-down or version selector. Review the available stable versions and select the target, such as PHP 8.3 or a newer branch your tests support.
- Click Apply, Set as current or the equivalent confirmation button. Do not close the page until cPanel reports that the setting was saved.
- Open the site in a private browser window. Test the home page, an administrative page and the site’s most important transaction or form.
- Verify the runtime inside WordPress using Tools → Site Health → Info. Expand the Server section and read the PHP version shown there.
The selector setting commonly applies to the entire cPanel account, including the primary domain, add-on domains, aliases and subdomains. If other sites share the account, test every one before and after the change. A successful primary site does not prove that the other domains are compatible.
How to change PHP for one WordPress domain with MultiPHP Manager
Use MultiPHP Manager when domains on the same cPanel account need different PHP branches. Some hosts label this interface Per Domain Settings.

- Open cPanel and find MultiPHP Manager in the Software section.
- Select the domain or domains that contain the WordPress sites you want to change.
- Choose the target PHP version from the version menu.
- Apply or save the selection, then wait for cPanel to confirm the change.
- Check each selected domain and leave unselected domains on their existing versions until they have been assessed.
- For every changed site, verify the version in WordPress → Tools → Site Health → Info → Server and test the site’s critical functions.

Verify that WordPress is actually using the new version
Do not rely only on the cPanel success message. Confirm from the application and from the site’s behavior.
- WordPress report: Go to Tools → Site Health → Info, expand Server, and read the PHP version.
- Front-end check: Open the home page, several content pages and any page that uses a form, membership feature, cart or booking workflow.
- Administrator check: Sign in, open the dashboard, edit a test post, upload an image and visit the plugin and theme screens.
- Background work: Confirm scheduled publishing, backups, email notifications, feeds, REST API calls and other cron or integration tasks that matter to your site.
- Error monitoring: Review the host’s PHP error log and WordPress logging after the switch. A blank page or a 500 error usually indicates a fatal error in code or an extension mismatch.
What to do when the site breaks after the change
Blank page, 500 error or “critical error”
Return to cPanel and switch back to the last known-working PHP version. If the site becomes inaccessible before you can log in, use the hosting control panel or ask support to perform the rollback. Restore the backup only if reverting PHP does not recover the site or if files or data were also changed.

Once the site is reachable, enable or inspect PHP and WordPress error logging, then identify the failing plugin, theme or custom code. Update it, replace it, or remove it before testing the newer PHP branch again. Do not repeatedly toggle versions on a live site without recording which change caused the failure.
Only one feature fails
A partial failure usually points to a specific extension or integration rather than WordPress core. Reproduce the problem, temporarily deactivate the suspected plugin in a staging copy, and retest. Check whether the plugin or theme publisher documents support for the PHP version you selected. Keep the rest of the site on the tested version while you resolve the incompatible component.

- Refresh Site Health after waiting briefly for the host’s configuration to propagate.
- Check that you changed the correct domain when using MultiPHP Manager.
- Confirm that another cPanel tool or host-level policy is not overriding the selector.
- Ask the host which PHP versions are enabled for your plan and whether a handler, extension or cache layer is serving an older runtime.
When cPanel does not offer a PHP selector
Not every host provides a customer-facing PHP switch, and some hosting plans do not allow customers to change PHP versions at all. If Select PHP Version, PHP Selector and MultiPHP Manager are missing, contact the host and ask which PHP versions are available for the specific domain and plan, whether the change is account-wide, and how to test or roll back it.
This cPanel procedure does not establish the steps for Plesk, managed WordPress platforms, VPS servers or nginx installations. Those environments use different controls and may require the provider or server administrator to change the PHP-FPM or handler configuration. Do not apply an unverified .htaccess snippet from a generic guide as a substitute for the host’s documented method.
Account-wide versus per-domain planning
Before selecting a version, map every site in the account. A single PHP Selector change can affect production, staging, development, parked and subdomain installations. MultiPHP Manager is safer when one legacy application cannot yet move, but it creates a maintenance obligation: each domain needs its own upgrade schedule, compatibility testing and end-of-life review.

- Changing an account-wide setting without checking add-on and subdomain sites.
- Confusing a cPanel version list with proof that every installed extension is available. Ask the host about required extensions if a plugin reports one missing.
- Leaving PHP 7.2 or 7.3 in place while expecting to upgrade to WordPress 7.x. Those branches are not supported by WordPress 7.0 and later.
A repeatable upgrade checklist
- Inventory all domains, aliases and subdomains affected by the chosen cPanel tool.
- Record the current PHP and WordPress versions.
- Update WordPress, the theme and plugins where safe.
- Back up files and the database and verify that the backup is usable.
- Run a compatibility check or test a staging clone.
- Select the PHP version in Select PHP Version or assign it per domain in MultiPHP Manager.
- Confirm the version under Tools → Site Health → Info → Server.
- Test administration, front-end pages, forms, commerce, uploads, scheduled jobs and integrations.
- Monitor logs and user reports during the maintenance window.
- Roll back promptly if a critical function fails, then fix the incompatible component before trying again.
