To change an Abiotic Factor dedicated-server password, stop the server, replace the existing password in your host panel or launch command, save the change, and start the server again. Rented servers expose a password field in their control panel; a self-hosted Windows server uses the -ServerPassword= launch parameter. Players must use the new password on their next connection.
Choose the method that matches your server
The password is controlled in the place where the server starts. If a hosting company provides a web dashboard, edit its settings or startup configuration. If you run the dedicated-server executable yourself, edit the shortcut, batch file, PowerShell script, or other command that launches it.
- Hosted server: use the provider’s panel, normally after stopping the instance.
- Self-hosted server: add or replace
-ServerPassword=yourpasswordin the launch command, then restart the process.
Do not confuse the join password with the administrator password. The former controls entry to the server; the latter is used for administrative access when the server supports it.
Change the password on a hosted server
Panel names and navigation can change. The following paths reflect provider instructions available in 2026; if a label differs, look for a setting named Server Password, Password, or a startup command-line option.

Nodecraft
- Stop the server completely from the dashboard. Wait until the status shows that the process is no longer running.
- Open Game Settings and select the Basic tab.
- Replace the value in Server Password.
- Save the settings and start the server. Test with the new password before distributing it to players.
BisectHosting
- Stop the server.
- Open the Startup tab.
- Turn on the Server Password option if it is disabled.
- Enter the new password, save the startup settings, and start the server.
If the option is left switched off, the panel may omit the password parameter even if text remains in another field. Confirm that the option itself is enabled.
GGServers
- Stop the instance from the control panel.
- Open Server Settings, then the Server tab.
- Change the password value and save.
- Start the instance and have a player reconnect using the replacement password.
Kinetic Hosting
- Stop the server and open Settings.
- Edit the Server Password field.
- Save the setting and start the server again.
Kinetic Hosting states that leaving this field blank disables the password. Other panels may interpret an empty value differently, so do not assume that clearing a field makes the server public unless your provider documents that behavior.

- Stop the server.
- Open Command Line Manager.
- Edit the predefined command line that contains the password field.
- Save the command-line entry and start the server.
This approach changes the argument used at launch rather than a separate in-game setting. If the command-line manager offers multiple predefined profiles, edit the profile that is actually selected for the next start.

Change the password on a self-hosted server
Self-hosting uses a launch argument. Add the parameter below to the command that starts AbioticFactorServer-Win64-Shipping.exe:
-ServerPassword=YourServerPasswordReplace YourServerPassword with the value you want. Keep the parameter in the same command that starts the dedicated server; changing an unused shortcut or script will have no effect.
Example Windows launch command

You can change only the -ServerPassword= value if the rest of your existing command already works. Preserve the hyphen and the equals sign; the parameter is written as one argument with no space between -ServerPassword and the password.

- Stop the running dedicated-server process gracefully.
- Open the batch file, shortcut target, PowerShell script, or service definition that launches the executable.
- Locate
-ServerPassword=. Replace everything after the equals sign with the new value, or append the complete parameter if it is absent. - Save the file or launch configuration.
- Start the server from that same file or service definition.
- Connect locally or ask a player to test the new credential before announcing it to the whole group.
If the server is started by a scheduled task or service, edit that task’s actual action rather than a desktop shortcut. A successful restart with an old command usually means a different startup path is being used.
Join the server after changing the password
Players can locate the server by the value supplied to -SteamServerName in the server browser, or connect using the server’s IP address when that method is available. When a password is configured, the joining player enters the new value at the password prompt. The previous password should be treated as invalid immediately after the new configuration is loaded.
Tell players exactly when the change takes effect and whether they need to reconnect. Existing sessions may remain connected until they leave or the server restarts; the reliable test is a fresh connection made after the restart.

Join password versus administrator password
-ServerPassword protects entry for ordinary players. -AdminPassword is a separate, optional value for administrative functions. Keep the two values distinct so that a player who knows the join credential does not automatically know the administrative credential.
Some administrator guidance uses SteamID entries in Admin.ini instead of an admin password. That guidance is from a single third-party source and should be treated as lower-confidence configuration advice; check the current server build and your host’s documentation before relying on it. Do not remove an existing administrator configuration merely because you changed the join password.
What a blank password means
Empty-password behavior is not consistent across available guides. Kinetic Hosting explicitly says that an empty field disables its password. Another guide describes players needing a password to join without clearly defining how an empty value is handled. The safest interpretation is provider-specific:

- On Kinetic Hosting, a blank Server Password field is documented as disabling the password.
- On another host, an empty field may be rejected, converted to a default, or handled by the provider’s startup template.
- On a self-hosted command, do not assume that
-ServerPassword=has the same effect as omitting the parameter entirely.
If your intention is a private server, enter a deliberate password and verify it with a new connection. If your intention is a public server, confirm the host’s documented behavior before clearing the field.

The panel saved the value but players still use the old password
- Confirm that the server was actually stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Check that you edited the active server or startup profile, not a second instance.
- On panels with an enable switch, verify that Server Password remains enabled.
- Ask a player to close the old connection and make a fresh attempt; an existing session does not prove that the new setting loaded.
The self-hosted server starts without a password
- Verify that the executable is launched with
-ServerPassword=in the same command window, script, or service action used for production. - Check for a typo in the parameter name, especially missing capitalization, the leading hyphen, or the equals sign.
- Inspect the startup output or log for the command actually used, if your launcher records it.
- Ensure that a second launch script is not starting another server on the same machine.
The password contains characters that do not work
The available guidance establishes the parameter name but does not define an escaping rule for every special character. If a complex password is rejected, temporarily test with a value containing ordinary letters and numbers. If that works, consult the current host or server documentation for quoting and shell-escaping rules before choosing a more complex value. Do not publish the test password or reuse it elsewhere.
Players cannot find the server after the restart
Password changes do not themselves change the listing name or network ports. Confirm that the server is running, that players are searching for the configured -SteamServerName, and that they are using the same address and query port as before. A missing listing can therefore be a startup or network issue rather than an incorrect password.
A console command appears to change the password
One hosting blog lists a password newpassword console command, but that command is not confirmed by official documentation. Treat it as unverified. The documented approaches are the host-panel field or the -ServerPassword= launch parameter; use those first.
Security and operational practices
- Use a join password that is not used for your Steam account, email, hosting panel, or administrator access.
- Store the value in the host panel or startup script with the same care as any other credential. Anyone who can read that script can read the password.
- Give the replacement password to players through a private channel rather than a public server listing.
- When changing ownership, staff, or community membership, rotate both the join password and the separate administrator credential if the departing person knew either one.
- Record the date of the change and the startup profile that was edited, especially when a host provides multiple instances or command-line presets.
Platform and version caveat
A community GitHub wiki states that the dedicated server is currently Windows-only and appears under Tools in the Steam library. Platform support can change, so verify the current distribution and operating-system requirements before setting up a new self-hosted instance. The Windows executable name and the panel labels cited here are likewise subject to change as the game and hosting providers update their templates.

The available instructions come from third-party hosting documentation and a community wiki rather than a located official Deep Field Games or Steam setup guide. Recheck the labels, launch syntax, and platform support against the current provider panel and game build before making a production change; the guidance should be re-verified by approximately January 12, 2027.
