You can change a VPS operating system in three ways: reinstall the server from your provider’s image catalog, upgrade the existing release in place, or build a second VPS and migrate to it. A panel reinstall is the simplest but erases the system disk; an in-place upgrade keeps the machine but has compatibility risks; a side-by-side migration takes longer and lets you test before moving production traffic.

Choose the right way to change your VPS operating system

The method determines whether your data survives, how much downtime to expect, and how easily you can roll back. Decide before touching the server.

Method What happens Data and configuration Best use Main risk
Provider-panel reinstall The provider replaces the boot disk with a selected image. The system disk is wiped. Additional disks may be excluded, depending on the provider. A clean start, a disposable server, or a move to an unrelated distribution. Permanent data loss if a backup cannot be restored.
In-place release upgrade The current installation is upgraded through supported package and release tools. Files, users and services remain on the same machine, subject to package and configuration changes. A supported upgrade within the same distribution family. Dependency conflicts, boot problems or control-panel incompatibility.
Side-by-side migration A second VPS is built with the target OS, tested, then placed in service. You copy only the data and configuration you choose. Production systems where a testable cutover and rollback path matter. More setup work and possible synchronization or DNS mistakes.

Do not treat a distribution change as a routine package update. Moving from Ubuntu to Debian, or from a Red Hat-family system to another family, is normally a reinstall or migration rather than an in-place conversion. In-place procedures are appropriate only when the operating system and every important application support that upgrade path.

What to check before changing anything

A successful OS change starts with an inventory and a recovery plan. Keep copies outside the VPS; a backup stored only on the disk you plan to erase is not a backup.

1. Confirm that the target image is available and supported

  • Open your provider’s image or reinstall catalog and confirm the exact distribution and release offered for your plan and region. Catalogs change, and Windows Server images may require a particular plan or license.
  • Check support for your web server, language runtime, database, control panel, kernel modules, monitoring agent and any licensed software.
  • Verify architecture requirements, such as x86-64 versus ARM, before ordering a replacement image or VPS.

2. Make restorable backups

Create a provider snapshot if one is available, but do not rely on it as your only copy. A snapshot captures the VPS state—including application data, files, configuration, kernel, packages and dependencies—at a point in time, yet it is not necessarily a complete system backup and may share the provider’s failure domain.

  • Export every production database to off-server storage. For MySQL or MariaDB, a typical logical export is mysqldump -u root -p --all-databases --routines --events > mysql-all.sql. For PostgreSQL, pg_dumpall -U postgres > postgres-all.sql captures roles and databases; use a database-specific dump when that better fits your restore process.
  • Copy application and user data, commonly under /var/www, /home, /srv or a custom mount. Preserve ownership, permissions and symbolic links where required.
  • Save TLS certificates and renewal configuration, environment files, deployment secrets, SSH authorized keys, /etc/ssh settings, cron definitions, systemd unit files, firewall rules, package inventories and service configuration.
  • Store exports on a different host or object-storage location, then perform a test restore. A file that exists but cannot be read, decrypted or imported is not a usable backup.

3. Record networking and access details

  • Write down every IPv4 and IPv6 address, interface name, gateway, provider-specific network setting and reverse-DNS/PTR value.
  • Record DNS A and AAAA records, their TTL values, mail-related records and any hard-coded IP addresses in applications or allowlists.
  • Make sure you can open the provider’s web console or rescue environment. Console access is the recovery route if SSH stops working during a reinstall or upgrade.
  • Confirm that you have a second administrator credential or an SSH key stored locally before replacing the only login method.

Method 1: Reinstall from the provider control panel

A panel reinstall is the cleanest way to replace one distribution with another. It is also destructive. OVHcloud’s VPS documentation states: “A reinstallation will delete all data currently hosted on the VPS (except for additional disks).” Treat that warning as typical, not universal: read the exact warning for your service before confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step reinstall

  1. Open the VPS management panel. Select the server and locate Reinstall, Rebuild, OS template or an equivalent action.
  2. Select the target image. Choose the distribution and release shown as compatible with that plan. Provider catalogs may include Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CentOS Stream, Fedora, openSUSE, Alpine, Arch and Windows Server, but no provider offers every image on every plan.
  3. Set the new access method. Preinstall your SSH public key where supported, or create a new root or Administrator password. Keep the private key and one-time password in a secure local password manager.
  4. Review the destructive confirmation. Check which disks will be erased, whether snapshots are retained, whether the service IP is reassigned and whether the action changes reverse DNS. Do not submit until the backup and restore plan is ready.
  5. Start provisioning. The image installation usually takes a few minutes, but the panel’s status is authoritative. Do not repeatedly submit the request while it is running.
  6. Retrieve the credentials and network details. Some panels display a one-time password or generated credentials only once. Save them before closing the screen.
  7. Clear the old SSH host key. Because the rebuilt machine has a new host key, an existing client may show a “REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED” error. Remove the old entry with ssh-keygen -R YOUR_VPS_IP, then reconnect and verify the new fingerprint through the provider console or another trusted channel.
  8. Apply the baseline configuration. Update packages, create a non-root user with sudo rights, install and enable a firewall, configure time synchronization, restore SSH policy and apply your monitoring and backup agents.
  9. Restore and test. Import databases, copy application files and certificates, recreate scheduled jobs and validate every public endpoint, background worker, mail flow and administrative login.

What a reinstall normally preserves

Whether an item survives is provider-specific. Many VPS services keep the service IP, plan, data-center location and reverse-DNS setting, but you must verify those values in your own panel. Additional disks may be left untouched, while the boot disk is erased. Credentials, machine identity and SSH host keys change even when the IP does not.

Item Typical result after a panel reinstall What to verify
Boot disk contents Deleted and replaced by the selected image. Which partitions and disks the warning includes.
Additional disks May remain intact. Whether the provider excludes them from the wipe and whether the new OS mounts them.
Public IP Often unchanged, but not guaranteed. Address, routing and firewall rules in the panel.
Reverse DNS/PTR May remain, reset or become editable only after reinstall. PTR value and mail-server reputation requirements.
SSH credentials and host key Replaced or regenerated. New key installation, password and client known-hosts entry.
Applications and data Removed from the erased disk. Successful restore and functional tests.

Method 2: Upgrade the existing system in place

An in-place upgrade preserves the VPS and is often the fastest and most economical method when the distribution documents a supported path. It is not a safe shortcut for changing unrelated distributions. Take a snapshot and a full, restorable backup first, and confirm that your control panel supports the exact source and target releases.

General preparation

  1. Read the distribution’s release-upgrade notes and the documentation for every installed control panel and major application.
  2. Remove or disable unsupported third-party repositories, pinning rules and obsolete kernels only after reviewing what depends on them.
  3. Ensure adequate free disk space, especially in /boot, /var and the package cache. Keep an out-of-band console session open.
  4. Update the current release completely, reboot if a new kernel was installed, and confirm that all services return cleanly before attempting the major-version change.

Ubuntu release upgrades

On a supported Ubuntu path, update the current release in this order:

  1. sudo apt update
  2. sudo apt upgrade
  3. sudo apt full-upgrade
  4. Review and remove obsolete packages when the package manager identifies them; do not blindly delete packages that provide application runtimes or drivers.
  5. Reboot if the kernel or core libraries changed, reconnect through the console or SSH, and check service health.
  6. Start the documented major-release procedure with sudo do-release-upgrade. Follow its prompts, especially decisions about locally modified configuration files.
  7. Reboot when requested and verify the result with cat /etc/os-release. Check the kernel, disk mounts, firewall, web server, database and application logs.

Do not force an upgrade when the tool reports that the release path is unsupported. Move through the supported intermediate release or use a side-by-side migration instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Debian release changes

Debian upgrades generally involve changing package sources from the old release codename to the new one, then running the documented update and full-upgrade sequence. The exact codename, repository components and transitional steps depend on the source and target releases. Back up /etc/apt, review third-party repositories, run the release notes’ pre-upgrade checks and keep console access available. Verify /etc/os-release, package status, bootloader behavior and every application after reboot.

AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and CentOS Stream

Use the supported ELevate or Leapp workflow for the specific source and target combination. Resolve every pre-check error before continuing; an ignored warning can leave an unbootable or partially converted system. Confirm that kernel modules, repository availability and vendor agents support the target release.

Control panels need their own migration path

Generic distribution commands can corrupt a hosting control panel. OVHcloud warns that generic dist-upgrade or Leapp procedures may damage Plesk or cPanel installations. Use the panel vendor’s supported utility—such as Plesk’s centos2alma or cPanel Elevate where applicable—and keep a full backup. If the panel does not support the desired operating-system change, build a new VPS and migrate instead of forcing package changes.

Method 3: Migrate to a second VPS

A side-by-side migration minimizes production risk because the original server continues serving traffic while the target is built and tested. It is the preferred approach when the OS family changes, the application is business-critical, or a clean configuration is more valuable than preserving years of package history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the replacement

  1. Order a second VPS with the target OS, sufficient CPU, memory, storage and network capacity, and any required license.
  2. Apply updates, create administrator and deployment users, install the firewall, configure SSH keys and set the correct time zone and hostname.
  3. Recreate the web server, language runtimes, database engine, queues, caches, monitoring, log rotation, cron jobs and systemd services. Keep versions compatible with the application rather than simply installing the newest packages.
  4. Recreate firewall policy and provider-level rules. Permit administrative access from your trusted addresses before tightening public ports.

Transfer data and databases

Take a final backup before cutover even if you already copied the data. For large or active databases, perform an initial dump, import it on the new VPS, then schedule a short write pause or replication-based final synchronization.

  • MySQL or MariaDB: create a logical dump with mysqldump, copy it securely, import it into the target server and recreate users and grants.
  • PostgreSQL: use pg_dump for individual databases or pg_dumpall when roles and cluster-wide objects are needed, then restore and verify extensions.
  • Files: synchronize application and user directories with a command such as rsync -aHAX --numeric-ids /var/www/ user@NEW_VPS:/var/www/. Adapt the paths, preserve ownership and exclude caches, sockets and secrets that should be generated on the target.
  • Certificates and secrets: copy them through an encrypted channel, set restrictive permissions and confirm that renewal jobs point to the new paths.

Test without changing public traffic

  1. Use a temporary staging hostname or override the production hostname in your workstation’s hosts file so only your test device resolves the new IP.
  2. Test HTTP and HTTPS redirects, certificate names, login and session handling, uploads, background jobs, queues, database writes, email delivery, webhooks and scheduled tasks.
  3. Inspect access and error logs while running realistic requests. Confirm that the application records the correct client IP when behind a proxy and that outbound allowlists recognize the new address.
  4. Repeat the restore procedure from your off-server backups on the replacement, or at least validate the most important database and file restores.

Cut over and keep a rollback path

  1. Lower DNS TTL ahead of the planned change, allowing enough time for existing cached records to expire.
  2. Schedule a short maintenance window, stop or quiesce writes on the old server, take the final database dump and run the last file synchronization.
  3. Move an additional IP to the new VPS if your provider supports that operation. Otherwise update the A and AAAA records and any provider, firewall, mail or third-party allowlists.
  4. Start services on the new VPS and monitor traffic, application errors, database health and logs throughout DNS propagation.
  5. Leave the original VPS powered on and untouched until all regions and dependent services use the replacement successfully. Cancel it only after the rollback window and backup-retention requirements are satisfied.

After the operating-system change

Changing the image or release is only the midpoint. Complete these checks before declaring the migration finished.

Troubleshooting common failures

SSH reports a changed host key

This is expected after a reinstall because the machine identity changed. Confirm the new fingerprint through the provider console, then run ssh-keygen -R YOUR_VPS_IP and reconnect. Do not bypass the warning without verifying that the IP now belongs to your rebuilt server.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server is unreachable after reinstall

Use the provider console or rescue mode. Check that the new image finished provisioning, the network interface has the expected address and gateway, SSH is listening, the firewall permits your source address and the configured key or password is correct. A provider-level network rule can block traffic even when the guest firewall is open.

The upgrade stopped on a package or configuration prompt

Do not reboot blindly. Record the prompt, inspect package-manager output and resolve dependency or disk-space errors from the console. For a control panel, stop and use its documented migration tool rather than continuing with generic package commands.

The application starts but behaves incorrectly

Compare runtime and database versions, environment variables, file ownership, enabled modules, locale and time-zone settings. Read the service and application logs, then test a single request locally on the VPS to separate application faults from DNS or proxy issues.

Some visitors still reach the old VPS

DNS caches honor their previous TTL and some resolvers may retain records longer. Keep the old service available, monitor both servers, and avoid destructive cleanup until traffic and logs show that the cutover is complete.

A practical decision guide

  • Choose a panel reinstall when the server is disposable or you have verified off-server restores and need a clean image quickly.
  • Choose an in-place upgrade only for a documented source-to-target path with application and control-panel support, a tested backup and console access.
  • Choose a side-by-side migration when uptime, testability, rollback or a cross-distribution move matters more than minimizing setup work.

No provider publishes a universal success rate, downtime average or cost for changing a VPS operating system. Those outcomes depend on the image catalog, plan, workload, backup method, application and DNS design. The reliable constant is the order of operations: preserve recoverable data, confirm support, keep console access, change the OS, then rebuild security and validate every service.
