Change the server-wide infected limit in the active mission’s db/globals.xml file. Find ZombieMaxCount, edit only its value (leaving type="0" unchanged), save the XML, restart the server, and then watch server FPS, desync, and logs. The documented vanilla value is 1000, but it is a reference default—not a universally safe or desirable number.
A higher global cap does not automatically fill every town with more infected. DayZ also applies infected event definitions, territory limits, zone activation distance, and economy settings. Use the procedure below to raise the ceiling safely and diagnose cases where the visible population does not change.

ZombieMaxCount is a map-wide ceiling. Bohemia Interactive’s Central Economy reference describes it as the “Maximal limit of spawned zombies across all zones in map” and documents 1000 as the vanilla default. The value limits the total number of infected that can exist across active zones; it does not order the server to maintain that many at every moment.
DayZ’s Central Economy combines several files. Each has a different scope, so editing the wrong one can produce no visible result or can change behavior you did not intend.

Think of ZombieMaxCount as the available map-wide budget. Events and territories decide how that budget is distributed, while the economy configuration determines whether the subsystem is operating at all.
Before you edit the mission
Stop the server or enter maintenance mode
Stop the DayZ server before changing its mission files. If your control panel supports maintenance mode, use it to prevent players from joining while you work. Editing a file while the server is writing economy data can leave you with an incomplete upload or a change that is overwritten on shutdown.
Back up the active mission
Download or copy the complete active mission folder before making any change. Include db/globals.xml, events.xml, zombie_territories.xml, and db/economy.xml if you expect to inspect related settings. Give the backup a date-based name so you can restore the known-good files if the server fails to start or performance becomes unacceptable.
Confirm the map and mission the server actually uses
DayZ installations commonly contain missions such as dayzOffline_chernarusplus or another dayzOffline_<map> directory. The directory you must edit is the one selected by the server’s startup configuration—not simply the first mission folder you see. A change in an unused map directory has no effect.
On a hosted server, the panel may expose a “Mission,” “Scenario,” or startup-parameter field. On a self-hosted installation, inspect the server startup command and the mission path it passes to DayZ. Open that selected mission and then its db subdirectory.
Step-by-step: raise the global infected cap
- Stop the server. Wait until the control panel reports it is stopped, or use maintenance mode and verify that no restart task is still running.
- Open the active mission folder. Navigate to the mission selected at startup, for example
dayzOffline_<map>, and opendb. - Make a backup. Download the existing
globals.xmland retain the full mission backup described above. - Open
globals.xmlas plain text. Use an editor that preserves UTF-8 text and does not add rich-text formatting. - Find the variable. Search for this element:
<var name="ZombieMaxCount" type="0" value="1000"/>- Change only the value. Replace
1000with the whole-number ceiling you want. For example, a setting of1500is written as:
<var name="ZombieMaxCount" type="0" value="1500"/>- Keep
type="0". This variable is an integer setting. Do not change it to a decimal or another type, and do not remove the self-closing slash or quotation marks. - Save valid XML. Preserve the surrounding document structure. Do not add comments inside the variable or leave an unclosed element elsewhere in the file.
- Upload the file if necessary. In a hosting panel, use its file manager or SFTP upload to replace the file in the active mission’s
dbdirectory. Confirm that the upload completed and that the path is the mission currently selected by the server. - Start or restart the server. A restart gives DayZ a clean opportunity to load the edited mission configuration. Wait for the server to finish starting before testing.
- Validate in game and in logs. Join with a test character, move through active areas, and check the server console or log files for XML parse errors. Record server FPS and player-reported desync before and after the change.
Choosing a value without guessing at a “safe” maximum
The documented 1000 is a configuration default, not a performance recommendation. There is no universal zombie number that is safe for every DayZ server. Capacity changes with the map, concurrent player population, hardware, installed mods, and other Central Economy activity.

Use measured increments instead of jumping from the default to an extreme value. For example, raise the cap in a modest step, restart, and observe a normal play period that includes the server’s typical player count. If performance remains stable, make another controlled step. If server FPS falls, desync increases, or logs show repeated economy problems, restore the previous value or lower the cap.
Keep a change log containing the old value, new value, date, player count, and observed symptoms. That makes it possible to identify a threshold specific to your installation without presenting that threshold as a rule for other servers.
Why a larger cap may not create more zombies in a town
Increasing ZombieMaxCount only increases the upper limit. It does not require every settlement to reach that limit. A town can still appear unchanged when another setting, an inactive zone, or the current player distribution is limiting spawns.
Infected events and type percentages
The infected event definitions in events.xml determine event and type-spawn behavior. A Bohemia Interactive forum explanation summarizes the relationship this way: “The globals.xml sets the maximum number of zombies server-wide.” In the same model, event definitions determine what kinds of infected events can occur and their percentage behavior. If those events are rare or constrained, raising the global ceiling alone may not increase the local count.
Territory ranges and local limits
zombie_territories.xml contains the static and dynamic territory information used for local zone counts and behavior. If a town’s territory range is lower than your new global ceiling, that town will stop at its local limit even though unused capacity remains elsewhere on the map.
Zone activation distance
Zombie zones are activated around players. The DayZ Modding Wiki identifies ZoneSpawnDist as the distance at which zombie zones activate and gives 300 as an example value. A player who is outside a zone’s activation distance will not cause that zone to populate merely because ZombieMaxCount is higher.

Economy initialization and respawn
Check db/economy.xml when the infected system appears inactive. Its settings determine whether the zombies subsystem is initialized, loaded, respawned, and saved. If that subsystem is disabled or failing to load, a higher global cap has nothing to act on.
Timing and existing zones
Do not judge the result from a single instant after joining. Zones activate as players approach, and the economy may need time to spawn or respawn infected. Test the same area under comparable player and movement conditions after the restart.
When changing globals.xml appears to do nothing
Work through these checks in order; each addresses a different failure mode.
1. Verify the active mission path
Re-read the startup configuration or hosting-panel mission selection. Compare that path with the location of the edited file. If the server is running a different map or a custom mission, copy the change into that mission only after backing it up.
2. Confirm the variable is present and valid
The element should have the variable name exactly as ZombieMaxCount, an integer type="0", and a whole-number value. Check for smart quotes, a missing closing />, accidental spaces inside the name, or a second duplicate entry that could make the file ambiguous.
3. Look for XML errors at startup
Read the server console and logs immediately after the restart. An XML parse error can cause the file or part of the economy configuration to be rejected. Restore the backup if the server will not start, then reapply one minimal edit in a plain-text editor.

4. Make sure the server really restarted
A file upload alone does not reload the mission configuration. Stop and start the server, and verify the start time or process identifier changed. A panel may display “restart” while a failed start leaves the old process running, so check the console status rather than relying only on the button label.
5. Inspect local event and territory constraints
If the server starts cleanly but a particular town is unchanged, inspect the relevant entries in events.xml and zombie_territories.xml. Those files can keep local density below the new global ceiling.
6. Check the zombies subsystem
Review db/economy.xml for initialization, load, respawn, and save settings. A disabled or malfunctioning subsystem prevents the cap from being used.

7. Account for mods and custom missions
Mods can supply their own mission files or alter economy behavior. Compare the active mission with the files installed by the server’s mod set, and test with the configuration the server actually loads. Do not overwrite a mod’s custom file with a vanilla copy unless you have a backup and understand the mod’s expected structure.

Change one category at a time. If you raise the global cap, territory ranges, event activity, and activation distance simultaneously, you will not know which change caused a performance problem or an unexpected population surge.

Performance monitoring after the change
More infected means more AI work. Monitor the server during ordinary play and during the busiest expected period, not only while you are alone in an empty area.

A brief fluctuation during startup is less informative than a repeatable drop during normal play.
- Desync and latency reports: Ask players whether movement, hit registration, or inventory actions become delayed after the change.
- Log errors: Check for XML parsing failures, economy errors, or repeated spawn and respawn messages that were not present before.
- Player and zone load: Compare results with the same number of players and similar locations. More active zones can matter as much as the nominal cap.
- Other economy activity: Loot, animals, events, and mod systems also consume server resources, so do not attribute every performance change to infected alone.
If the server degrades, lower ZombieMaxCount to the last stable value, restart, and retest. If the problem began after changing several files, restore the backup and reapply changes individually.
Using a hosted DayZ server
A hosting plan is suitable for this procedure only if it provides mission-file access and a reliable restart control. Before choosing or configuring a provider, verify that you can:
- open the active mission directory and its
dbfolder; - edit or upload
globals.xmland, when needed,events.xml,zombie_territories.xml, andeconomy.xml; - download backups rather than relying on an in-panel undo function;
- restart the server and read startup logs or console output; and
- identify which map and mission the server is currently running.
If a panel regenerates mission files on every restart, ask its documentation or support team whether custom Central Economy edits persist. A provider that exposes only a slider without the underlying mission files may not allow the local troubleshooting required when the global cap has no visible effect.
Post-change validation checklist
Use this checklist after every edit:
- The server was stopped or placed in maintenance mode before editing.
- A complete backup of the active mission exists.
- The edited file belongs to the mission selected at startup.
ZombieMaxCountis present exactly once in the expected file.- The value is a whole-number integer and
type="0"is unchanged. - The XML remains well formed and uploaded to the correct path.
- The server completed a full restart without economy or XML errors.
- Testing occurred near active zones, after allowing time for spawning.
- Server FPS, desync, and logs were compared with the previous configuration.
- Any performance decline can be reversed by restoring the backed-up value or files.
The practical answer
For a server-wide increase, edit ZombieMaxCount in the active mission’s db/globals.xml, keep type="0", restart, and measure the result. Treat the documented default of 1000 as a reference starting point rather than a target. If the change does not make towns denser, investigate events.xml, zombie_territories.xml, ZoneSpawnDist, and db/economy.xml instead of repeatedly raising the global cap.
