Change the vehicle event in mpmissions/<your_mission>/db/events.xml, not an ordinary item entry in types.xml. Set the event’s <nominal> target, <min> replenishment floor and <max> ceiling, then make sure the same event name exists in cfgeventspawns.xml with enough usable positions. If there are fewer matching positions than your target, DayZ cannot create the requested number of cars.
Stop the server before editing, keep max at or above nominal, retain remove_damaged="1" for normal drivable-car cleanup, and allow the economy time to run its spawn cycle after restarting.

DayZ creates vehicles through dynamic events. Each vehicle event describes a population and its lifecycle, while a separate spawn-position file tells the event where it is allowed to place vehicles. The two files must agree: an event can request 12 sedans, but it cannot maintain 12 if the map configuration offers only six valid sedan positions.

Typical event names include VehicleCivilianSedan and VehicleOffroadHatchback. A vehicle type such as CivilianSedan appears inside the event’s child definition; do not confuse that type name with the event name used in cfgeventspawns.xml.

Prepare the server before editing
- Stop the DayZ server completely. Editing while the server is writing economy files can leave you with a partial or overwritten configuration.
- Back up the entire mission folder. Include
mpmissions/<your_mission>, not just the one XML file. A full copy lets you restore the original event and position data if the server refuses to start. - Identify the active mission. Use the mission folder the server actually launches. Editing a different map’s mission directory has no effect.
- Use an XML-aware editor. Keep the existing indentation and closing tags, and validate the document before restarting. One missing angle bracket can prevent the mission from loading.
Step-by-step: increase a vehicle population
1. Find the vehicle event in events.xml
Open mpmissions/<your_mission>/db/events.xml and search for the event used by the vehicle class you want to change. Start with the event names already present in your mission, such as VehicleCivilianSedan or VehicleOffroadHatchback. A mod may add differently named events, so copy the exact spelling and capitalization from the existing file.
2. Understand the three count fields

For example, a target of 12 cars could use nominal 12, min 8 and max 15. This means the economy aims for 12, starts replenishment as the population falls toward eight, and will not exceed 15 through that event. These are configuration values, not a guarantee that 12 vehicles will be visible at once: available positions, cleanup rules and the economy’s current state still apply.

Use the existing event as your template. Do not replace the complete block with a sample from another map or game version. Event attributes and child entries can differ between versions and mods. Unless you deliberately want to add another vehicle class, change the count fields and preserve the event’s other values.

</event>The sample illustrates a 12-car target. Your file’s child structure may use different values or additional child types. Keep the child limits and vehicle type definitions consistent with the event you are editing; do not add a new child unless you intend the event to spawn that class too.

4. Check the event’s operational flags
<active>1</active> must remain enabled for the event to run. The position and limit values describe how the event uses its configured locations; preserve the map’s existing settings unless you understand the effect of changing them. Values such as lifetime, saferadius, distanceradius and cleanupradius affect how long vehicles remain eligible and how the economy manages nearby or stale objects, but they do not replace the population fields.
5. Match the event in cfgeventspawns.xml
Open mpmissions/<your_mission>/cfgeventspawns.xml and locate an event block whose name exactly matches the name in events.xml. Matching is literal: spelling, capitalization and punctuation all matter.

</event>Each <pos> supplies a fixed location. The coordinates must be valid for the map and suitable for the vehicle event. The x and z values identify the position, while a supplies orientation. Use the coordinate format already used by your mission rather than copying locations from a different map.
6. Provide enough usable positions
Count the positions in the matching event block and compare that count with your desired simultaneous population. If the event requests 12 cars but only six valid positions exist, the event cannot place 12 cars at once. Raising nominal above the position count therefore produces no additional vehicles; it only raises a target the map cannot satisfy.

When adding locations, choose safe, intentional parking areas and verify that every coordinate is reachable and not duplicated. Invalid, overlapping or unsuitable locations can reduce the effective position count even when the XML contains many <pos> lines. If you do not control the map’s coordinate data, lower the target to a number the existing positions can support.
7. Keep damaged-car cleanup enabled
For ordinary drivable vehicles, retain remove_damaged="1" unless you have a specific reason to keep wrecks in the economy. A damaged vehicle that remains registered can occupy an event slot, so the server sees the population as full and does not replenish it. If cars disappear after being wrecked and never return, inspect this flag together with the position block and event name.

8. Validate, restart and allow the economy to run
- Save both XML files and run them through your editor’s XML validation.
- Check that every opened event, children block and root element has a matching closing tag.
- Restart the server and read the startup log for XML parsing errors, unknown event names or mission-loading failures.
- Inspect the configured locations in game and compare the observed population with the event target.
There is no single guaranteed delay for an existing saved world. The economy may need time to complete its spawn and cleanup cycle, so judge the result after the server has been running normally rather than immediately after the first restart.
Choosing sensible population values
Use the map’s available positions and the server’s intended vehicle density as the starting point. The following configurations are examples of how the three fields relate; they are not measured performance recommendations.

A higher count increases vehicle density but also makes the position list and cleanup behavior more important. Set min too close to nominal and the economy may replenish more aggressively; set it too low and a depleted world can remain below your preferred population until the event’s rules trigger replacement. The correct balance depends on how many cars your players can use without making travel and resource scarcity irrelevant.
Why increasing nominal may not create more cars
There are not enough spawn positions
This is the most common limit. Count the <pos> entries under the exact matching event in cfgeventspawns.xml. Add valid positions or reduce nominal; changing types.xml cannot solve a position shortage.
max is below the target
If nominal is 12 but max is 10, the event’s ceiling contradicts the target. Set max to at least 12, and check the child entry for a lower class-specific limit.
The event names do not match
An event named VehicleCivilianSedan in events.xml will not use a position block named VehicleCivilianSedans, a differently capitalized name or the vehicle type name CivilianSedan. Copy the event name directly between files.

The event is disabled or the XML failed to load
Confirm <active>1</active>, then inspect the server log after restart. A malformed XML document, an unclosed tag or an invalid attribute can cause the mission to reject the file, leaving the previous configuration in effect or preventing startup altogether.

Check the event’s remove_damaged flag. With damaged objects retained, the economy can count wrecks toward the event population and stop creating replacements. Correct the cleanup setting, restart and allow the economy to process the existing objects.
You are checking too soon after a restart
Vehicle events are economy-driven rather than an instant “spawn this many now” command. Existing objects, cleanup radii and the current saved-world state affect when replacements appear. Use the logs and the map after a normal spawn cycle instead of judging the setting immediately.
Advanced checks for modded servers and custom maps
Multiple child vehicle classes
Some events contain more than one <child> entry. The event target is then distributed among those child types according to the event’s existing rules. If you want more of one class rather than simply more vehicles overall, inspect the child entries and use the file’s established structure. Changing only the parent count may increase the total without producing the class you expected.
Fixed positions versus grouped formations
cfgeventspawns.xml is the normal source for fixed vehicle coordinates. cfgeventgroups.xml serves grouped formations when the map or mod defines them. Editing a group file will not fix a missing or misspelled event block in cfgeventspawns.xml.
Preserve version-specific settings
Event schemas and child attributes can vary between game versions, official maps and mods. Copy the block already shipped with your mission and change only the values required for your target. A configuration copied from another version can contain valid-looking XML that the running server does not understand.
Verification checklist
- The server was stopped before editing and the complete mission folder is backed up.
- The active mission’s
db/events.xmlcontains the intended vehicle event. nominalis the desired target,minis the replenishment floor andmaxis at leastnominal.- The child entry or entries do not impose a lower class-specific ceiling.
- The event has
activeset to1. cfgeventspawns.xmlcontains an exactly matching event name.- The matching block has enough valid, non-duplicated
<pos>entries. remove_damaged="1"is enabled when wrecks should not consume vehicle slots.- Both XML files validate, the server log shows no parsing errors, and the economy has had time to run after restart.
The reliable method is therefore to tune the event population and its map support together. A larger number in events.xml only becomes more cars in the world when the matching event is active, its limits are consistent, its positions are sufficient and damaged or stale objects are cleaned according to the event’s rules.
