DayZ does not use one universal animal-count setting. The Central Economy has separate controls for non-ambient animals, event-based spawns, and ambient animals assigned to territory zones. For a map-wide non-ambient ceiling, edit db/globals.xml and the AnimalMaxCount value. For event-created animals, edit the relevant entry in db/events.xml. For ambient territory populations, edit dmin and dmax in the matching env/*_territories.xml file, and check territory limits registered in cfgenvironment.xml.
Which DayZ setting controls animal numbers?
The correct file depends on how the animal is spawned. DayZ’s Central Economy (CE) applies several limits at different scopes, so raising one value may have no visible effect when another, lower limit is still active.

These controls can compound. A territory value cannot overcome a lower globalCountMax; an event’s nominal value cannot overcome a lower event or child maximum; and non-ambient events still cannot exceed AnimalMaxCount.
Before editing: select the active mission and make a backup
Every map has its own CE files. Editing a mission that the server is not running will not change anything in game.

1. Identify the map in serverDZ.cfg
Check the server configuration for the active mission or template. The standard mission directories documented for current maps include:
mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/for Chernarusmpmissions/dayzOffline.enoch/for Livoniampmissions/dayzOffline.sakhal/for Sakhal
Use the directory that matches the map selected by serverDZ.cfg. If you run a renamed or custom mission, use that mission’s actual folder instead of copying these names literally.
2. Stop writes to the mission files
Stop the DayZ server before editing, or otherwise ensure no process is writing the mission files. A live server or control panel can overwrite an edit while you are saving it.
3. Back up the complete mission folder
At minimum, preserve db/globals.xml, db/events.xml, cfgenvironment.xml, and the entire env/ directory. A complete folder backup is safer because it lets you restore matching versions if a later edit introduces an XML error or unexpected spawn behavior.
Raise or lower the map-wide non-ambient cap
Use this method when you want to change the maximum number of animals created by non-ambient systems across the whole map.

Find AnimalMaxCount
- Open the active mission’s
db/globals.xml. - Search for an element whose
nameattribute isAnimalMaxCount. - Change its
valueattribute while leaving the element name and XML structure intact. - Save the file as valid XML.
The Central Economy documentation from Bohemia Interactive describes AnimalMaxCount as the “Maximal limit of spawned animals (not ambient) across all zones in map.” The default shown in that documentation is 200, accessed in 2026. That figure is a documented default, not a performance guarantee or a required target for every server.
<var name="AnimalMaxCount" type="0" value="200"/>If your file uses different attributes or formatting, change only the existing value. For example, replacing 200 with 300 raises the map-wide ceiling to 300 non-ambient animals, provided event and child limits can actually request that many.
What this setting does not change
AnimalMaxCount excludes ambient animals. Raising it therefore does not automatically increase animals that are maintained by territory definitions. It also does not rewrite an event’s own nominal, min, or max values. If those values remain lower, the event will still produce fewer animals.
Change event-based animal spawns in db/events.xml
Events define many non-ambient spawns. Use this file when the animal type appears in an event entry and you need to change how many that event maintains.
Adjust the event and its child limits together
- Open
db/events.xmlin the active mission folder. - Locate the event for the animal you want to change. Use the event’s animal-type entries rather than editing an unrelated event.
- Review the event-level
nominal,min, andmaxvalues. - Review the child entry or entries and their own
minandmaxvalues. - Raise or lower the related values consistently, keeping each minimum at or below its corresponding maximum.
- Save and validate the XML before restarting.
nominal expresses the event’s target population, while min and max constrain the range used when the economy creates or replenishes the event. Child limits can impose a second ceiling. If you increase only the event’s nominal value but leave a child max unchanged, the child limit can continue to cap the result. The same applies when the event-level maximum is lower than the requested nominal count.

Events and child entries work together. Think of the effective count as constrained by every applicable bound, not by whichever number you edited most recently.
Change ambient animals in territory files
Ambient animals are distributed through territory zones rather than being governed solely by an event entry. Their local population is controlled in the relevant file under the mission’s env/ directory.
Edit dmin and dmax
- Identify the territory file for the animal type and map. File names follow the
*_territories.xmlpattern. - Find the zone you want to change.
- Set
dminto the minimum number of animals for that zone. - Set
dmaxto the maximum number for that zone. - Keep
dminless than or equal todmaxfor every zone.
The StarDZ Team DayZ Modding Wiki defines these attributes as “dmin, dmax — min/max animal count in the zone.” Increasing them affects that zone only. To increase ambient animals across a map, you may need to edit multiple zones, not just the first entry you find.

Check ambient limits in cfgenvironment.xml
Some ambient entries registered in cfgenvironment.xml add another layer of limits. When the territory type you are editing is registered there, inspect:

globalCountMax: a ceiling for the registered ambient type across its territorieszoneCountMin: the lower per-zone settingzoneCountMax: the upper per-zone setting
The official Bohemia Interactive DayZ-Central-Economy repository’s current-master hen example, accessed in 2026, uses globalCountMax 50, zoneCountMin 1, and zoneCountMax 1. Those are example values for that entry, not a universal setting for every ambient animal.
If you raise a territory file’s dmax but leave a lower zoneCountMax or globalCountMax in force, the additional animals will still not appear. Check all applicable limits before concluding that the territory edit failed.

Validate, restart, and allow the economy to repopulate
- Compare the edited files with your backup so that only the intended values changed.
- Run the XML validator supplied by your editor or hosting panel, or open the file with an XML-aware editor that reports malformed tags and attributes.
- Confirm that every opening element has a matching closing element (or a valid self-closing form), quotation marks are paired, and numeric attributes contain numbers.
- Restart the server after the files pass validation.
- Allow the Central Economy time to replenish animals. Existing animals and currently occupied zones can make the new count appear gradually rather than immediately.
- Change one layer at a time and record the before-and-after values. This makes it possible to identify whether a global, event, or territory setting produced the change.
A successful restart only proves that the server accepted the files; it does not prove that a higher population is possible. The economy may still be constrained by another cap, player proximity, cleanup timing, or the event’s own replenishment rules.

You edited the wrong map
The server loads the mission selected in serverDZ.cfg. An edit in the Chernarus mission cannot affect a server currently running Livonia, Sakhal, or a custom mission directory.
The animals are ambient, not event-based
Ambient animals use territory files and may also be constrained by cfgenvironment.xml. Changing an event entry will not raise a territory’s dmin or dmax.

A lower event or child maximum remains
Review the parent event and every child entry. A nominal count is not an override for a lower max.

For non-ambient animals, the map-wide ceiling can stop the economy before your event target is reached. Compare the requested event population with AnimalMaxCount.
An ambient global or zone cap remains
For territory animals, inspect globalCountMax, zoneCountMin, and zoneCountMax where the ambient entry is registered. A lower value there can override a higher territory-file value.
The XML is invalid or was overwritten
A malformed edit can prevent the intended configuration from loading. Restore the backup if necessary, validate again, and check the server startup log for a file or parsing error. Also verify that a control panel, update process, or synchronization script did not restore the original mission files.
The economy has not replenished yet
Restarting does not guarantee an instant population jump. Observe the server after it has had time to repopulate and test in more than one area when you changed territory settings.
A practical tuning method
There is no published performance-safe animal count that applies to every CPU, player population, host, and map. Treat every increase as a tuning choice.

- Start with the smallest change that tests your goal, such as a modest increase to one event or a few territory zones.
- Keep a dated copy of the original and edited values.
- Restart and observe spawn behavior, server performance, and log errors after the economy has repopulated.
- If the count does not change, identify the remaining lower cap before raising another value.
- If performance degrades or the economy behaves unpredictably, restore the last known-good backup and reduce the change.
- Use
AnimalMaxCountfor a broad non-ambient ceiling. - Use event and child values when you need to target a particular event population.
- Use territory
dmin/dmaxfor local ambient density. - Use
cfgenvironment.xmlto check whether ambient registration adds a stricter global or zone limit.
