To change the name players see in the Unturned server list, stop the server, edit its server-specific Commands.dat, and change the Name entry. In a standard U3DS installation, the file is U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/Server/Commands.dat; in the simple setup, the folder is commonly U3DS/Servers/Default/Server/Commands.dat. Add or replace a line such as Name My Unturned Server, save the file, and restart the server.
The setting that controls the name players see
Unturned has two names that are easy to confuse:
- Public server name: the text displayed to players in the in-game server list. This is controlled by the
Name [Text]command inCommands.dat. - ServerID: the identifier used to create and select a server’s data directory. It appears in the folder path and in the launch argument, but it is not the public listing name.
The command reference describes Name [Text] as assigning the name shown on the server list. Its documented range is five to fifty characters, and the default value is Unturned. Changing only a folder name or a launch identifier therefore does not rename the listing that players see.
What you need before editing
- Access to the machine running U3DS (Unturned Dedicated Server).
- The correct ServerID directory for the instance you want to rename.
- A plain-text editor. Use an editor that saves ordinary text rather than a word processor that adds formatting.
- A short maintenance window, because the server should be stopped while its configuration is edited.
Most server settings cannot be configured safely while the server is open. Stop the instance cleanly first, then edit the file while no process is writing to it. If several Unturned servers run on the same machine, identify the intended instance before opening a file; each instance has its own Commands.dat.
Find the correct Commands.dat file
Standard U3DS layout
U3DS stores server-specific configuration below a ServerID directory:

U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/Server/Commands.datFor the simple setup, the common path is:
U3DS/Servers/Default/Server/Commands.datThe word Default is only an example of a ServerID. Your installation may use another identifier, especially if you created more than one instance.
Windows location and launch naming
On Windows, launch the Unturned Dedicated Server application and inspect the U3DSServers directory it creates. Open the folder corresponding to the server you intend to change, then open its Server subfolder and locate Commands.dat.
The official Windows setup commonly starts an instance with a shortcut target using:
-nographics -batchmode +secureserver<server folder name>The folder name supplied after +secureserver helps U3DS generate and organize that instance’s files. It is not the name displayed publicly. If the shortcut uses +secureserverSurvival01, for example, edit U3DSServersSurvival01ServerCommands.dat; do not expect renaming the Survival01 directory to change the server-list text.

Linux location and launch naming
On Linux, the documented helper-script form for an internet server is:
./ServerHelper.sh +InternetServer/MyServerThis creates or selects the MyServer directory below U3DS/Servers/. A LAN instance uses the corresponding +LanServer/ form. In either case, the characters after +InternetServer/ or +LanServer/ are the ServerID. The configuration to edit is therefore:
U3DS/Servers/MyServer/Server/Commands.datUse the ServerID actually present in your launch command. Editing a different directory can leave the live instance unchanged even when the file itself looks correct.
Change the public name step by step
- Stop the server cleanly. Close the running U3DS instance or use your normal shutdown procedure. Wait until the process has finished writing its files before editing.
- Identify the active ServerID. Match the folder under
U3DS/Servers/to the identifier used by the Windows+secureserver...shortcut or the Linux+InternetServer/...or+LanServer/...command. - Open the server’s configuration directory. Go to
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/Server/and selectCommands.dat. - Open Commands.dat as plain text. Configuration commands are written one per line. Do not paste the entry into a rich-text document or save it with formatting.
- Find the existing name entry. If a line beginning with
Nameis already present, replace its text. If no such line exists, add a new line using the same format. - Enter the desired name. For example:
Name My Unturned ServerReplace My Unturned Server with the text you want players to see. Keep the command word Name, include a separating space, and place the complete display text on that line.

- Save the file. Preserve the filename
Commands.datand its plain-text format. Check that your editor did not append an extra extension such as.txt. - Start the same server instance again. Use the original shortcut or helper-script command so U3DS loads the same ServerID directory.
- Check the server list. After the instance is online, search for the new text. The name is read when the server starts, so a running process will not reflect an offline file edit until it is restarted.
Public name versus ServerID

This separation explains the common failed attempt in which an administrator renames a folder and sees no change in the browser. The folder identifies stored data; the Name command supplies the public label.
Name syntax and limits
Use the documented command form
The command is written as Name [Text], with the brackets representing the text you supply rather than characters to type. A valid example is:

Count the complete display text, including spaces and punctuation, against that range. A value shorter than five characters or longer than fifty is outside the documented range and may not be accepted as intended.
Keep the line unambiguous
Put the command on its own line and retain one clear Name entry for the instance. If you are replacing a previous value, edit that line rather than leaving old and new entries scattered through the file. Avoid changing unrelated commands during a rename; limiting the edit makes it easier to identify a configuration mistake if the server later fails to start.

How to verify that the rename worked
- Confirm that the server started from the same ServerID after the restart.
- Open the in-game server browser and search for the exact new text, including any spaces or punctuation.
- Allow for the listing to refresh before concluding that the change failed.
- If the old name remains, stop the instance again and inspect the file and path using the troubleshooting table below.
Verification in the server list is the relevant test because Name controls the public listing. Seeing a changed folder name in the file system is not evidence that the public name changed.
Troubleshooting a name that did not change

Safely handling more than one Unturned server
Multiple U3DS instances can coexist under different ServerID directories. Treat each directory as an independent configuration scope:
- Record which launch command starts each instance.
- Map that command’s ServerID to its corresponding
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/Server/path. - Change only the
Commands.datbelonging to the instance whose listing should change. - Restart and verify each affected instance separately.
Do not move or rename a ServerID directory merely to change a public label. A ServerID change selects a different location for saved data and configuration, which can make the process appear to have lost its existing settings even though the original files remain elsewhere.

The path separators and launch syntax differ by operating system, but the public naming mechanism does not. Both platforms use the server-specific Commands.dat file for the command.

A practical pre-start and post-start checklist
Before starting the renamed instance
- The process is stopped completely.
- The edited file is under the intended ServerID.
- The filename is exactly
Commands.dat. - The entry is on one line in the form
Name Your Chosen Text. - The display text is between five and fifty characters.
- No unrelated configuration lines were changed.
After starting it
- The startup command still points to the intended ServerID.
- The server reaches its normal online state.
- The server browser shows the new listing text.
- Other instances, if any, retain their own intended names.
What changing the name does and does not do
Changing the Name command changes the label presented in the server list. It does not, by itself, reorganize the server’s saved data, select a different ServerID, or move configuration files. Those are separate operational choices controlled by the directory and launch identifier.

Conversely, changing a ServerID can change which saved data and configuration U3DS loads, but it should not be used as a naming shortcut. If your goal is only to present a new public title, leave the directory structure intact and edit the Name line in the active instance.
Shortest reliable method
For a single standard installation, the complete process is:
- Stop U3DS.
- Open
U3DS/Servers/Default/Server/Commands.dat, or substitute the actual ServerID folder. - Add or replace the line
Name My Unturned Server. - Save as plain text without changing the filename.
- Restart the same server command and confirm the new name in the server list.
If that sequence produces no change, the first things to recheck are the active ServerID path, the exact filename, and whether the server was fully stopped before the edit.
