Change your Hytale server’s displayed name by editing the server installation’s root config.json. Stop the server, replace the value for ServerName (or the Name key used by some configurations), save valid JSON, and start the server again. Hosted servers may provide the same setting as a Server Name field in their control panel.
Where Hytale stores the server name
The name shown in Hytale’s server list is read from the configuration file in the root directory of your server installation. Official Hytale guidance identifies the setting as ServerName. A hosting guide documents a configuration using Name instead, so do not add a second key automatically: open your own file and use the key that is already present.

Before you edit: access and safety checks
Stop the server first
Use the server host’s Stop control, the service manager that launches your server, or your normal shutdown procedure. Editing while the process is running can allow the process to rewrite configuration or leave you unsure which version was saved. The documented workflow is stop, edit, save, then start.

Make a backup of config.json
Download or copy the current config.json before changing it. A backup gives you a known-good file to restore if the server refuses to start or another setting is accidentally altered. On a hosted service, use the panel’s download option if available, or copy the file through SFTP.

- Self-hosted: open the folder that contains the server executable and its configuration files.
- Game-hosting panel: look under Files, Config, or Game Settings.
- SFTP-managed host: connect with the credentials supplied by the host and browse to the server’s installation root.
Do not edit a similarly named template, backup, or local development copy. The file that matters is the config.json loaded by the instance you actually start.
Method 1: edit config.json on a self-hosted server
- Stop Hytale. Wait until the process has exited and the console or service manager reports that it is stopped.
- Open the server’s root folder. Locate
config.jsonbeside the files used to launch that server instance. - Create a backup. Copy the file to a safe location or duplicate it as a backup outside the active configuration path.
- Open the file in a plain-text or code editor. Avoid word processors, which can insert formatting characters that invalidate JSON.
- Find the name property. Search for
ServerName. If that key is not present, inspect the existing configuration forNameand confirm that it is the server-name field rather than an unrelated setting. - Replace only the value. Keep the key, colon, commas, and quotation marks. For example, change
"ServerName": "Old Name"to"ServerName": "New Name". - Save the file as JSON. Preserve the
.jsonextension and the original filename and location. - Start the server. Launch the instance normally after saving.
- Check the server list. The new name should appear after the restarted instance has loaded the updated configuration.
Example of a safe one-line change
Before:
"ServerName": "Weekend Test Server",After:
"ServerName": "North Harbor Builders",The comma belongs to the JSON structure. Keep it when the property is followed by another property; remove or retain punctuation only according to the surrounding object, not because of the name itself.
Method 2: use a hosting control panel
Many hosts expose the same setting through a form, so you do not need to edit JSON manually. The label and navigation differ by provider. Look for one of these paths:
- Game Settings followed by Server Name.
- Config followed by a name field.
- Files, then the root
config.json.
One documented panel places Server Name as the first option on its Game Settings page. Other hosts place configuration controls under Config or provide only a file editor. If a dedicated field exists, enter the new name, apply or save the change, and then restart the server from the panel.

Panel procedure
- Open the server in your host’s dashboard.
- Click Stop and wait for the stopped status.
- Open Game Settings, Config, or the relevant file manager.
- Enter the replacement in Server Name, or open
config.jsonand edit its existing name key. - Save or apply the setting.
- Start or restart the server.
- Join or refresh the server list to confirm the displayed name.
It has not been established that every panel writes the same key or that a panel value always takes precedence over a manual file edit. If you changed both places, verify the result after a full restart. If the old name returns, use the panel’s own field or ask the host which file and key its startup process reads.
Method 3: edit through SFTP
SFTP is useful when a host does not provide an in-browser editor. Connect with an SFTP client using the host, port, username, password or key, and server directory supplied by your provider.

- Connect to the server over SFTP.
- Browse to the installation root and locate
config.json. - Download a backup before editing.
- Open the downloaded file in a plain-text editor, change the existing
ServerNameorNamevalue, and save it. - Upload the edited file to the same directory, confirming the overwrite.
- Start the server and check the name in Hytale.
Some SFTP clients edit files in place and upload automatically when you save. Confirm that the transfer completed before starting the server; otherwise the instance may still be using the old file.
Keeping the JSON valid
Most rename failures are syntax mistakes rather than a problem with the name itself. JSON requires double quotation marks around both property names and string values. Do not use typographic “smart quotes,” single quotes, or an unquoted value.

If the new name contains a double quote, it must be escaped according to JSON rules. The simplest way to avoid an unnecessary error is to choose a name without quotation marks. Keep the existing comma placement and braces unchanged, and check that the editor did not append a second extension such as .json.txt.
Characters and display
Use a name made from characters Hytale and the hosting panel can display reliably. The documented guidance cautions that unsupported characters may cause the name not to display properly. Plain letters, numbers, spaces, and a small number of ordinary punctuation marks are the safest choice. Avoid control characters, line breaks, and decorative symbols until you have confirmed that your server list renders them correctly.
Choosing a new server name
The configuration change controls the text players identify in the server list; it does not establish a new address or migrate the server to another installation. Choose a name that is recognizable at a glance and consistent with your community or purpose.
- Be distinctive: include a community, project, or world identifier instead of a generic label such as “Server 1.”
- Keep it readable: a short name is less likely to be truncated in a list or panel.
- Use stable wording: avoid dates or temporary event labels if the server will keep the same identity.
- Stay display-safe: prefer ordinary characters when you do not know the client’s rendering limits.
There is no verified evidence in the available Hytale guidance that the name changes gameplay permissions, the network address, player data, or world files. Treat it as the server-list identity only, and do not assume that changing it renames folders, DNS records, service labels, or backups.

How to confirm the change worked
- Confirm the edited file is in the active server root, not a backup or template directory.
- Check that the name key appears only where expected and that its value is enclosed in double quotes.
- Start the server and wait for normal startup completion.
- Refresh Hytale’s server list or reconnect from a client that was not displaying a cached listing.
- Verify the exact spelling, spaces, and capitalization.
- If the old name remains, stop the server again and inspect the active configuration path and the host panel’s saved value.
A restart is required for the server process to load the changed configuration. Simply saving the file while the instance is running does not provide a reliable way to refresh the displayed name.
Troubleshooting a name that does not change
The server will not start after the edit
Restore the backup immediately if startup fails. Then compare the edited file with the original and look for a missing comma, brace, or quotation mark. Reapply only the name-value change in a JSON-aware editor if possible. A malformed configuration can prevent the server from loading unrelated settings, so do not keep retrying with the damaged file.

The old name still appears
- Make sure the server was fully stopped before saving.
- Confirm that you restarted the same instance whose listing you are viewing.
- Check whether the active file uses
Namerather thanServerName, or vice versa. - Verify that the panel did not save a different value in its own Server Name field.
- Refresh the client’s server list after startup completes.
Because host implementations differ, the available documentation does not establish a universal precedence rule between a panel field and a hand-edited file. If the panel overwrites your edit during startup, use the panel field or follow the host’s documented configuration path.
The name is blank, truncated, or displayed incorrectly
Replace unusual symbols with ordinary letters, numbers, spaces, or simple punctuation. Check for an accidental line break inside the quoted value and ensure the value is not empty. Save the file in its original encoding and restart again.
You cannot find config.json
Use the panel’s Files or Config section, search the server installation directory, or connect through SFTP. If several server instances exist, identify the one launched by your service or startup script before editing. A host may restrict access to the root directory and expose only a form; in that case, the form is the supported route.
What is not available as a rename shortcut
No verified source documents an in-game or console command for changing the Hytale server name. Plan on changing the configuration and restarting rather than relying on a command typed into the server console. If a future Hytale release adds a command or changes the key, follow the version-specific official instructions and recheck the configuration generated for your installation.
