For a dedicated Arma Reforger server, change the value of game.name in the server’s config.json, validate the JSON, then restart the server with that file. The new value is the display name players see in the server browser. If you host from the game client instead, edit the name on the hosting flow’s Settings tab.
What you are changing
Arma Reforger keeps the public server name in the game object of config.json. The property is name, so the complete path is game.name. It is not a top-level setting. The key is case-sensitive: use lowercase name exactly, and keep its value as a JSON string.
Changing this value affects the label shown in the multiplayer server browser. It does not rename the machine, alter the installation directory, change the account associated with the server, or modify the mission currently running. Those are separate settings.
Choose the right method for your hosting type
Dedicated server using a configuration file
If you start the server executable with a configuration-file argument, edit the file supplied to the launch command. The usual pattern is a command containing -config followed by the path to config.json. A server can have several configuration files, so editing a similarly named file in another folder will have no visible effect.

Server created through the in-game hosting flow
For a server created from the game’s hosting interface, the name is entered on the Settings tab before you start hosting. Players then search for that name from the Multiplayer page. This route does not require manually editing a dedicated-server JSON file for the hosting session.
Why the distinction matters
The two workflows can produce similar-looking server entries but use different controls. If you are editing a file while actually hosting from the client, the browser name will not change. Conversely, changing the in-game field does not rewrite the dedicated server’s file in the way a persistent server installation expects.
Before editing: a short safety checklist
- Stop the dedicated server before changing its configuration. This prevents the process from overwriting your edit and ensures the next launch reads the new value.
- Make a backup copy of the current
config.json. Keep the original until the renamed server has started and appeared in the browser. - Confirm which file the launch command passes after
-config. If you use a service, script, panel, or shortcut, inspect its actual command line rather than assuming the file location. - Use a plain-text editor. Do not use a word processor that adds formatting, smart quotes, or hidden characters.
- Record the exact old name. It makes it easier to tell whether you are looking at a stale browser result or the new instance.
Find the active config.json
Inspect the launch command
Look for the server start command and identify the path attached to -config. For example, a command may point to a file in a profile or server-data directory rather than the directory containing the executable. Open that specific file. If the argument uses a relative path, resolve it from the working directory used by the service or script.

Check the structure before changing anything
Search the file for "game". In the current nested layout, the name appears inside that object, alongside settings such as password, passwordAdmin, scenarioId, maxPlayers, and visible. A template may show an empty string for the name.
If you cannot find a game object, do not paste a second copy at the end of the file. Older guides and older server versions use a flatter layout with keys such as gameHostBindAddress and adminPassword. Treat that as a version-format issue and verify which schema your installed server expects before adding properties.
Edit game.name in the nested configuration
Make the smallest possible change
Change only the string assigned to name. A minimal section looks like this:

}Keep the comma after the name line when another property follows it. If name is the final property in the object, remove that comma. The value must be in straight double quotes, because JSON strings require double quotes.
Preserve the rest of the file
Do not change the spelling or capitalization of neighboring keys while renaming the server. Do not move name outside the game object. A top-level entry such as "name": "My Server" may be ignored by a server that expects game.name.
Use a recognizable display name
The official configuration example uses a pattern similar to Server Name – Mission Name. Including a community or region label and the current mission can make the listing easier to identify, but keep the important identifying words near the beginning because browser columns may be narrow.

Character length and characters
A third-party guide describes a 0–100-character range, but the official configuration excerpt does not state a maximum. Consider that range a guide-specific limit, not a guaranteed contract for every server build. If you need a name near the limit, test it on the exact server version you run. Use ordinary letters, numbers, spaces, and simple punctuation first; if a name containing unusual symbols fails to display correctly, replace those symbols and test again.

Strict JSON parsers reject comments and trailing commas. Either error can prevent the server from starting, making a name change appear to be the problem when the real issue is syntax.
- Open a command prompt or terminal in the directory containing the edited file, or provide the file’s full path.
- Run
python -m json.tool config.json. On systems where Python is invoked aspy, the equivalent ispy -m json.tool config.json. - If the command prints formatted JSON and returns without an error, the file is syntactically valid. If it reports a line and column, inspect that location for a missing comma, an extra comma, mismatched braces, or unescaped quotation marks.
- Correct the file, save it, and run the validation command again. Do not proceed to troubleshooting the browser listing until the file parses successfully.
Common JSON mistakes
- Trailing comma:
"name": "My Server",immediately before a closing brace is invalid when no property follows. - Comments: Lines beginning with
//or blocks such as/* note */are not part of strict JSON. - Curly quotes: A text editor may turn straight quotes into typographic quotes. Replace them with ordinary
"characters. - Wrong value type: Put the server name in quotes. A bare word is not a valid JSON string.
- Broken nesting: Ensure the
gameobject opens and closes with braces and thatnameis inside it.
Restart the server and confirm the file being used
The server reads its configuration during startup. Stop the process cleanly, save the file, and start the server again using the same command that includes the edited file after -config. A restart is the documented procedure for applying the changed name; do not assume that editing a file while the process is running will update an existing listing.

- Stop the current server process.
- Verify that the edited
config.jsonis saved and passesjson.tool. - Start the server with the intended
-configpath. - Wait for the server to finish loading and register in the multiplayer browser.
- Search for the new name and confirm the mission, player limit, and other details identify the expected instance.
If the old name remains, first confirm that the process stopped completely and that the launch command points to the file you edited. Running two instances with different configuration paths is a common reason for checking one file while another server is actually online.

- Open the multiplayer hosting flow in Arma Reforger.
- Go to the Settings tab.
- Enter the desired server name in the name field.
- Review the other hosting settings, then start the session.
- From the Multiplayer page, search for the exact name to verify that the listing is visible.
This procedure applies to the in-game hosting interface. It is separate from editing a persistent dedicated-server config.json.

Older configuration layouts and version checks
Community instructions written for earlier releases may show a flat set of options, including gameHostBindAddress and adminPassword. The current official Server Config documentation describes name within game. These examples are not interchangeable by default. A server update, management panel, or deployment package may also generate its own schema.
When the structure differs, use the configuration template shipped with your installed version or the documentation for that version. Preserve the existing layout and change the property that the server actually recognizes. If the server logs a configuration error, restore the backup and reapply only the confirmed property rather than mixing snippets from different guides.
Practical naming guidance
- Put the community or server identity first, followed by a separator and the mission, for example
North Ridge - Conflict. - Keep capitalization consistent so players can recognize the listing in search results.
- Avoid including a password or private administrative information in the public name.
- Do not use a name that implies settings your server does not have, such as a player count or mod set that is not actually configured.
- If you operate multiple instances, give each one a distinct name so an administrator can match the browser entry to the correct configuration file.
Quick repeatable procedure
- Stop the dedicated server.
- Find the file passed to the launch command’s
-configoption. - Inside the
gameobject, change the string assigned to lowercasename. - Save a backup and validate the edited file with
python -m json.tool config.json. - Restart the server with that same configuration path.
- Search the multiplayer browser for the new display name.
For client-hosted games, skip the file-editing steps and set the name on the hosting flow’s Settings tab before starting the session.
