Change the public name of an Arma 3 dedicated server by editing the hostname setting in the configuration file that the server actually loads, then restarting the server. The essential line is:
hostname = "Your Server Name";The configuration file can have any filename. The -config= launch parameter determines which file is read, so editing a file with the wrong name or in the wrong directory will have no effect. After a restart, allow the server browser time to refresh before judging whether the change worked.

What controls the name shown in the Arma 3 server browser?
Arma 3 reads the displayed server name from the hostname entry in its dedicated-server configuration. This is the name players should see in the public server list when the listing has refreshed.
The required setting
Use one line in the configuration file:
hostname = "Your Server Name";Keep the double quotation marks around the name and retain the semicolon at the end. Replace Your Server Name with the text you want players to see. For example:

hostname = "North Coast Co-op";The setting is a configuration value, not a command typed into the in-game chat and not a property of the server’s operating-system account. It must be present in the file loaded at startup.
The filename is not special
A common mistake is assuming that only a file named server.cfg can work. The filename itself has no special meaning. The executable receives the path through the -config launch option, so a file named server.cfg, public.cfg, or another name works when the launch command points to it.
For example, if the command contains -config=public.cfg, editing server.cfg will not change the running server. The file named after -config= is the one to inspect and edit.
Before you edit anything
Check these items first. They prevent the most common situation: a correctly written name in a file that Arma 3 never loads.
- Locate the directory containing the dedicated-server executable and its configuration files.
- Find the exact startup command, service definition, script, shortcut, or control-panel field used to start the server.
- Record the value after
-config=, including its spelling and extension. - Make a backup copy of the configuration file before changing it.
- Confirm that you can stop and start the server, because the setting is applied during launch rather than while the process is already running.
If a startup script uses a relative path, interpret the path from the directory in which that script starts the executable. If it uses an absolute path, edit that exact file. Do not rely on a similarly named copy elsewhere on the machine.
Linux: change the name step by step
1. Open the configuration file used by the launch command
Change to the Arma 3 server directory, then open the file named by the startup command’s -config= option. A typical arrangement has the executable and configuration file in the same server directory, but the option may point to another path.

Use an editor appropriate to your system. The important part is not the editor; it is verifying the path and preserving the rest of the configuration.
2. Add or update the hostname line
Add the setting on its own line, or replace the existing hostname setting if one is already present:
hostname = "North Coast Co-op";Do not create two competing hostname entries and expect Arma 3 to choose predictably. Keep one active line in the configuration file. Preserve the quotation marks and semicolon exactly as shown.
3. Save the file without changing the startup reference
Save the edit, then recheck the filename and directory. If you renamed the configuration file, you must also update the launch command so that -config= names the new file. Renaming only the file, or changing only the command, leaves the server pointing at the wrong location.

4. Start the server with the matching configuration
The Bohemia Interactive wiki gives this Linux-style example:
./arma3server_x64 -name=server -config=server.cfgHere, -config=server.cfg selects the file. If your file has another name, substitute that name:

./arma3server_x64 -name=server -config=public.cfgThe -name=server value in this example identifies the server’s profile directory; it is not the public browser name. The public name comes from hostname in the selected configuration.
5. Stop and restart the dedicated server
Stop the running process cleanly using the method you normally use, then start it again with the same launch command. Editing the file while the process is running does not make the already running instance reread the setting.

After the restart, wait roughly one to two minutes, then refresh the Arma 3 server browser. The exact delay varies with server-list updates and network conditions, so an immediate refresh is not a reliable test. If the name still has not changed after a reasonable wait, use the checks in the troubleshooting section rather than repeatedly editing the text.
Windows, service wrappers, and launch scripts
The same configuration rule applies when the server runs through Windows, a scheduled task, a service wrapper, or a shortcut: edit the file referenced by -config=, then restart the process that launches Arma 3.
Find the real launch line
Do not assume the file beside the executable is the active file. Inspect the shortcut target, batch file, service arguments, or management tool that starts the server. Locate the exact -config= argument and follow its path.
Apply the change through the same startup method
After saving the hostname line, restart the service or launch wrapper itself. Closing an administration window that is not the process owner may leave the old server running. Confirm that the old process has stopped before starting a new instance.

If a wrapper generates a command line from its own settings, update the wrapper’s configuration rather than editing a temporary command it creates. The generated command is the final authority for which file Arma 3 reads.
Hosted servers and control panels
Some rented-server control panels expose a Server Name field on a startup or launch page. In that arrangement, the panel may write a configuration file each time the server starts. A direct edit made over FTP or a file manager can therefore be replaced by the panel’s saved value.
When a panel has a Server Name field
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Enter the desired name in the panel’s server-name or startup setting.
- Save the panel configuration.
- Start the server again.
- Wait for the listing to refresh, then check the browser.
If the panel also lets you edit the raw configuration, determine which setting is authoritative. If the name reverts after every restart, the panel is likely regenerating the file; keep the value in the panel rather than only in the generated file.
When you have file access but no name field
Identify the launch command shown by the host, find its -config= value, and edit that exact file. If the host does not expose the command or the file, ask support which configuration is loaded. Editing an unreferenced file cannot affect the public listing.

How to verify that the new name is active
Verification should distinguish a configuration problem from a stale browser result.
- Confirm that the running command contains the expected
-config=path. - Open that file and confirm there is one active
hostnameline with the new text, quotation marks, and semicolon. - Confirm the server was stopped and started after the edit.
- Wait about one to two minutes, then refresh the server browser.
- If the browser still shows an old result, try Direct Connect using the server’s address. This helps determine whether the server is running with the new configuration while the public listing is stale.
Direct Connect is a diagnostic comparison, not a replacement for a correctly published listing. If players can connect directly but the browser shows an old name, focus on refresh and listing behavior. If the server cannot be reached directly either, investigate the server’s availability separately from the name setting.

Troubleshooting: name unchanged or server missing

Editing the wrong copy
This is the highest-probability cause of an unchanged name. Servers often have a template, an old backup, and an active configuration in different directories. The launch argument, not the filename you happen to find first, identifies the active copy.
Forgetting to restart
The dedicated server reads the configuration at launch. A saved edit is not enough if the existing process continues running. Confirm the process start time or use the normal stop-and-start procedure for your service.

A server that is absent from the browser has a visibility or publication issue, even if its hostname line is perfect. Forum reports commonly associate missing listings with an unforwarded query port; that is separate from the text displayed as the name. Test direct connectivity and inspect publication settings before changing the hostname again.
Stale browser data
The browser can retain an earlier listing. Refresh it after the server has restarted, clear cached data if the old result persists, or use Direct Connect as a comparison. Seeing an old name briefly after a restart does not prove that the configuration edit failed.
Choosing a practical server name
Arma 3 does not require the filename to match the public name, so choose a name that helps players identify the server. Include information that is genuinely useful to your community, such as a group name, activity type, or region, but keep the text concise enough to scan in a crowded browser.
- Use a single, readable name rather than several competing labels.
- Keep the value inside the quotation marks and end the line with a semicolon.
- Avoid editing unrelated settings in the same maintenance window; isolating the change makes recovery easier.
- Keep a dated backup before substantial configuration work.
The available evidence does not establish a universal character limit or a complete list of accepted special characters for every Arma 3 build. If unusual symbols produce an unexpected result, test a simple name containing ordinary letters, spaces, and numbers first, then add complexity one change at a time.

Keep the launch command and file together in your documentation
Record the executable command, the value after -config=, and the location of the active file. This prevents future administrators from editing a template or backup while the server continues to read another file.
Recheck after updates or migration
When moving the server or changing a service wrapper, verify the launch arguments again. A migration can leave the configuration in one directory while the new command points elsewhere. The name setting itself may be unchanged even though the selected file has changed.
Use a controlled rollback
If the server stops starting after a configuration edit, restore the backup, start the server, and then reapply only the hostname change. This isolates syntax mistakes from unrelated configuration changes and gives you a known working baseline.
