Godlike.Host offers hosted Assetto Corsa servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Change an Assetto Corsa Competizione (ACC) dedicated server’s public name by editing the serverName value in its settings.json file, saving that file as UTF-16LE, and then restarting the server as a practical precaution. The network-focused configuration.json file is not where the server name is stored.
Where ACC stores the server name
ACC separates gameplay/server identity settings from network settings. The name displayed to people browsing or joining your server is held in settings.json, inside the ACC server configuration folder. Look for the JSON member named serverName.
A minimal example looks like this:

}Your real file will normally contain many additional settings. Do not replace the whole file with the short example. Change only the existing serverName value and leave the other members intact.
Do not edit the wrong JSON file
configuration.json is used for network-related settings. Changing a name-like value in that file will not rename the ACC server. If you cannot find serverName in settings.json, first confirm that you opened the server’s settings file rather than its network configuration file.

Before you edit: access, backup and file ownership
You need write access to the machine or hosting account that runs the dedicated server. On a self-hosted installation, this usually means access to the server’s configuration directory through the operating system or a remote file session. On a rented server, the provider may hide the files and expose a Server Name field in its control panel instead.
- Identify which instance you intend to rename if the machine runs more than one ACC server.
- Make a copy of
settings.jsonbefore editing. Keep the original until the renamed server has started and is visible. - Check whether the server process is running. Stopping it before editing avoids a running process rewriting the file when it shuts down, although the available documentation does not establish that stopping is mandatory.
- Use an editor that can explicitly save UTF-16LE. A normal UTF-8 save can leave the file unreadable to ACC.
Method 1: rename a self-run ACC server by editing settings.json
- Open the ACC server configuration folder. Use the folder selected for your dedicated-server installation and locate
settings.json. If several copies exist, match the file to the instance whose launch command or service you use. - Create a backup. Copy the file to a separate location or give it a clearly identifiable backup name. Do not edit the only copy.
- Open the file as text. A code or plain-text editor is preferable to a word processor, which can add formatting that is invalid in JSON.
- Find the exact key. Search for
"serverName". The spelling and capitalization matter: useserverName, notservername,server_nameor a translated label. - Replace only the value. Keep the key, quotation marks and comma structure. For example, change
"serverName": "Old League Server"to"serverName": "Sunday GT3 League". - Check JSON syntax. The value must be a quoted JSON string. Escape any quotation mark inside the name with a backslash, and avoid deleting a comma that separates this member from the next one.
- Save as UTF-16LE. Use your editor’s encoding or “Save As” option and select UTF-16 little-endian (often displayed as UTF-16LE). Do not assume that the editor’s default encoding is acceptable. The ACC Server Admin Handbook describes server configuration as JSON in UTF16-LE format, and a hosting guide warns that edits saved as standard UTF-8 may be ignored.
- Close and reopen the file. This is a quick way to confirm that the editor saved the intended encoding and that the new value is present.
- Start or restart the ACC server. Restarting after the edit is a practical precaution so the process reads the file again. The available documentation does not confirm whether a restart is strictly required for a name change to appear.
- Verify the listing. Check the in-game server browser or the interface you use to administer the instance. Allow for normal browser refresh or cache delay before concluding that the edit failed.

Encoding: why UTF-16LE matters
The encoding requirement is the most common reason a correctly typed name appears not to change. The ACC Server Admin Handbook versions identified in the available documentation (1.6.0 and 1.9.3) specify UTF16-LE JSON for server configuration. A separate hosting guide reports that ACC can ignore a file saved in ordinary UTF-8. That warning comes from a single lower-confidence source, but it is consistent with the handbook’s stated format, so saving explicitly as UTF-16LE is the safest procedure.

How to confirm the encoding
- In an editor with an encoding indicator, verify that the document is labelled UTF-16LE after saving.
- If the editor offers several UTF-16 choices, select little-endian rather than UTF-16 with an unspecified or different byte order.
- Reopen the file in the same editor and confirm both the encoding label and the new
serverNametext. - Do not use a rich-text editor. It may add formatting, metadata or characters that make the file invalid JSON.
Method 2: rename a hosted ACC server through its control panel
Some hosting services do not give customers direct access to the ACC configuration files. Instead, the panel may provide a field labelled Server Name, Name or similar. The exact labels, menu locations and apply procedure vary by provider; no specific provider workflow is established here.
- Sign in to the panel for the correct ACC instance.
- Open the server’s configuration, settings or startup-parameters page.
- Look for a field specifically describing the server name. Do not use a hostname, IP address, query port or display description field unless the panel documents it as the public name.
- Enter the new name and use the panel’s Save, Apply or Update control.
- Follow the panel’s instruction to restart, reinstall or reload the server if it gives one. If it does not state how the change is applied, restart the instance after saving as a practical precaution.
- Confirm the new text in the ACC browser after the instance is online.

Names, characters and JSON-safe text
Keep the value a single JSON string. Plain letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens and underscores are the least troublesome choices for a server browser. If you use punctuation, remember that JSON has special characters:

- A quotation mark inside the name must be escaped, for example
"Drivers" Cup". - A backslash must also be escaped.
- Do not insert an unescaped line break inside the quoted value.
- Use a concise name that players can read in the browser; the available documentation does not define a separate maximum length, so avoid assuming one.
ACC’s documentation identified for this guide does not provide a current 2026 character-limit table or a definitive list of supported display characters. If a name containing emoji or unusual symbols fails to display, test a simple ASCII name first. That isolates an encoding or character-support problem from a configuration problem.

The old name remains after editing
- Confirm that you edited
settings.json, notconfiguration.json. - Check that you changed the instance that is actually running. Multiple installations or services can have separate configuration folders.
- Verify that the new text is inside the
serverNamevalue and that there is only one active occurrence of that key in the file. - Save again explicitly as UTF-16LE, then restart the instance.
- Refresh the in-game browser or reconnect after the server has fully started.
The server fails to start after the edit
- Restore the backup copy immediately if the failure began after saving.
- Inspect the edited line for missing quotation marks, an extra quotation mark or a deleted comma.
- Make sure the file is still valid JSON and was not converted into rich text or another format.
- Retest with a short ASCII name. If that works, add punctuation or non-ASCII characters one change at a time.
- If the file was saved in UTF-8, convert it back to UTF-16LE and try again.
The control panel has no name field
The provider may be managing settings.json on your behalf or may require a support request. Do not create a second configuration file or alter network fields to force a rename. Ask the host where its ACC server name is stored and how it applies changes; the generic hosted-server steps above cannot establish a provider-specific path.

What the available documentation does—and does not—confirm
The documented procedure is based on ACC Server Admin Handbook versions 1.6.0 and 1.9.3 plus hosting guidance. Those materials establish the serverName location, distinguish settings.json from configuration.json, and specify UTF16-LE configuration files. No source dated 2026 was identified, so newer ACC server builds could change a key name, folder arrangement or accepted format. Before a production rename, compare your installation with the current ACC Server Admin Handbook published by the game’s developer.
The documentation does not establish that a restart is technically mandatory, does not provide a universal hosted-panel workflow, and does not publish a relevant performance statistic or character-limit specification. Treat restart as a sensible reload step rather than a documented hard requirement, and follow your host’s own instructions where they differ.
