For a self-hosted Abiotic Factor dedicated server, add -SteamServerName="Your Server Name" to the server’s launch command, then restart it. If a hosting company runs the server, stop it and edit the panel’s Server Name field instead. Do not change SandboxSettings.ini; that file controls gameplay rules, not the browser name.
If you want hosted Abiotic Factor game-server hosting instead of managing launch commands, Godlike.Host provides a game panel and server-management tools. Not on the Abiotic Factor dedicated server wiki’s list of Verified Server Providers (github.com/DFJacob/AbioticFactorDedicatedServer, 10 Oct 2026).
Choose the procedure that matches your server
Abiotic Factor servers are renamed in one of two places. The deciding question is who controls the startup configuration:
- Self-hosted dedicated server: you start the server executable or script and can edit its launch arguments. The name is supplied with the
-SteamServerNameargument. - Hosted server: a game-server provider starts the process for you. The provider’s control panel normally exposes a Server Name field that writes the startup setting for you.
Stop the server before changing either a launch command or a panel field. A running process can keep the old command in memory, and a host panel may rewrite its startup configuration when the service stops or starts. Make the change while the service is stopped, save it, and then perform a clean start.

Rename a self-hosted dedicated server
The launch argument is the reliable place to set the name shown to players in the server browser. The argument is case-sensitive in the examples published for the dedicated server, so enter it exactly as -SteamServerName.
1. Stop the dedicated-server process
Use the normal stop command or close the server process cleanly. Do not edit the startup script while the server is still running. If the server is managed by a service or scheduled task, stop that service first so it cannot immediately relaunch with the old command.
2. Find the command that starts Abiotic Factor
Open the batch file, shell script, service definition, container command, or shortcut that launches the dedicated server. You are looking for the line containing the game server executable and its existing options. Keep every option already present; the name argument is added alongside them rather than replacing them.
3. Add the -SteamServerName argument
Add the argument to the launch line, separated from the other options by a space. For a name without spaces, this is sufficient:
-SteamServerName=LabServerFor a name containing spaces, enclose the value in quotation marks:

-SteamServerName="Your Server Name"The quotes belong around the value, not around the entire command. Replace the example text with the name you want players to see. Avoid accidentally leaving two copies of the argument in the same command; if duplicate options are present, remove the old copy and retain one authoritative value.
4. Save the startup file without changing unrelated options
Save the script or service definition in the same location used by your normal startup process. Do not remove port, query-port, player-limit, password, or world-save arguments that the server already uses. A rename should alter only the display-name argument.

Those options serve different purposes. Leave their existing values untouched unless you are intentionally changing those settings as a separate task.
5. Start the server again
Launch the server with the edited command. A restart is required for the process to read the new argument; editing a file alone does not change a server that is already running.
6. Confirm the result in the server browser
After startup completes, search for the server using the same filters and connection details you normally use. The name supplied by -SteamServerName is the name players should see in the browser. If the old name remains, stop the process and work through the troubleshooting section rather than editing a gameplay configuration file.

Rename a server managed by a hosting panel
Hosted providers expose the same underlying setting through their own interfaces. Menu names can change as panels are updated, so the labels below describe the documented paths rather than a universal interface.

- Stop the Abiotic Factor server from the panel’s control page.
- Open the Startup tab.
- Locate the Server Name field.
- Replace the existing value with the name you want displayed.
- Save the startup setting.
- Start the server and allow it to finish loading before checking the browser.
The panel owns the startup command in this arrangement. Editing a local file on your computer will not change the hosted instance unless that file is actually the provider’s configuration for your server.
Citadel Servers panel
- Stop the server.
- Open Commandline Manager.
- Select Active Modify.
- Change the Server Name value.
- Save the modified command line.
- Start the server and verify the name in the browser.
If your provider uses a different panel, look for a startup, command-line, launch-parameter, or configuration area containing a field labelled Server Name. Do not create an arbitrary setting in an unrelated configuration editor when the panel already provides a dedicated field.
Which configuration files control the name?
Several files appear in Abiotic Factor server installations, but they do not have equal status for renaming.
SandboxSettings.ini is for gameplay rules
The sandbox file stores gameplay settings. A documented path is:

AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/<WorldName>/SandboxSettings.iniIt must begin with the [SandboxSettings] section header. Back it up before making any gameplay edit. Changing this file will not set the server-browser name, so do not add a name entry there as a renaming method.
ServerSettings.ini is not confirmed as the authoritative name source
Some hosting documentation directs users to a panel’s Configuration Files area for server settings. A third-party list includes a ServerName entry in ServerSettings.ini, but that key has not been confirmed against an official developer reference. Treat it as unverified rather than relying on it for a production server.
If your provider specifically documents a ServerName key for your current game-server version, follow that provider’s instructions; otherwise use the panel’s Server Name field or the -SteamServerName launch argument.
Do not rely on a generic config.ini entry
One third-party guide shows a generic ServerName= setting in config.ini, while another suggests a different configuration location under /AbioticFactor/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/. These alternatives are not verified as the current, authoritative method. Editing them can leave the browser name unchanged and may create a second, conflicting source of configuration.

Troubleshoot a name that does not change
The old name appears after a restart
- Confirm that you edited the command or panel belonging to the server you actually started.
- Search the complete startup command for another
-SteamServerNameargument. Remove the stale duplicate so only the intended value remains. - Check quotation marks around names containing spaces. A malformed value can cause the process to read only part of the intended name or ignore the option.
- Stop the server again, save the setting, and perform a full start rather than merely reconnecting a client.
- For a hosted instance, re-open the panel after saving and verify that the new value persisted. A provider-generated command may have restored the previous value if the field was not saved.
The panel has no obvious Server Name field
Open the startup, command-line, or launch-parameter section rather than a world or sandbox editor. On documented panels, the field is exposed in Startup or through Commandline Manager → Active Modify. If your provider uses another label or hides the argument, ask its support team where the current -SteamServerName value is managed.

The server fails to start after editing the command
- Restore the previous command from your backup or undo the last edit.
- Check for unmatched quotation marks and accidental deletion of an existing option.
- Keep the name argument separated from the executable and from every other option by spaces.
- Start with the original command, then add only
-SteamServerName="Your Server Name"and test again.
Do not use a name change as an opportunity to alter ports, query ports, player limits, passwords, or world-save options. Isolating the single change makes a startup error easier to diagnose.
The browser still shows no server
Renaming does not replace the server’s connection settings. If the server itself is missing, first confirm that it completed startup and that you are searching with the same address, port, query-port, and filters used before the rename. Those connectivity checks are separate from the display-name setting.
Does renaming affect an existing world?
The available documentation identifies the launch argument and panel field as name controls but does not establish how a rename behaves for an existing save beyond changing the displayed server name. Keep a backup of the world and configuration before making changes, and do not rename or move the world directory as part of this procedure. The documented sandbox path includes the world name, but that path describes where gameplay settings are stored; it is not an instruction to change the folder name.
Safe rename checklist
- Identify whether you start the server yourself or use a hosting panel.
- Stop the server completely before editing anything.
- Back up the relevant startup configuration and, when editing gameplay files, the world configuration as well.
- For self-hosting, add one correctly quoted
-SteamServerNameargument to the actual launch command. - For hosting panels, use the documented Server Name field in the startup or command-line area.
- Do not edit
SandboxSettings.inito change the browser name. - Save the change, start the server, and verify the displayed name.
- If the old name returns, look for a second startup command or a panel overwrite before changing any
.inifile.
Version and panel-label caveat
Launch parameters and hosting-panel labels can change with game updates and provider-panel revisions. The methods above reflect the documented -SteamServerName argument and the named panel paths available when this guide was prepared. Before applying a change after a major server update, compare the current dedicated-server documentation or your provider’s current startup instructions with the exact labels shown in your account.
