To change what players see in the Project Zomboid server browser, edit the server instance’s INI file: set PublicName to the browser name and PublicDescription to the tagline. Set Public=true if you want the server listed publicly. ServerName is not the browser-name setting.
Which settings control the listing?
The server’s configuration file contains separate settings for its instance and its public listing. For the name players see in the browser, change PublicName. For the line displayed beneath that name, change PublicDescription. A server will not appear in the public browser unless Public is set to true.

These are configuration examples, not a required naming format. Choose a name and description that suit your server. If you prefer direct-IP or invite-only play rather than a public listing, leave Public false; the listing settings do not make a private server public by themselves.
Find the correct server INI file
Project Zomboid’s default server instance is named servertest, and its usual configuration file is servertest.ini in the Zomboid Server folder. If you created the server with a different instance name, look for an INI file named after that instance rather than assuming the file is always called servertest.ini.

The filename and the public name serve different purposes. Changing PublicName changes the browser listing; it does not mean you should rename the INI file. Conversely, finding a file with a particular instance name does not tell you what players will see in the browser.
On a hosted server, the provider’s panel or file manager may expose the instance configuration under a different-looking name. For example, a hosted setup may use a file such as Pterodactyl.ini. Treat that as an example, not a universal filename or a guarantee about how a particular host organizes files. Identify the configuration for the instance you actually run before editing it.

Change the browser name and description
- Stop or safely access the server. If the server is running, make sure you can edit the configuration file without another process or panel overwriting your changes. The available guidance does not establish whether every build applies these changes live, so plan to restart after editing rather than assuming a live reload.
- Open the instance’s INI file. Locate the file named for your server instance in the Zomboid Server folder, or use the host’s file manager to find the corresponding instance configuration.
- Find the three public-listing keys. Search the file for
PublicName,PublicDescription, andPublic. Edit the existing entries if present. If you do not find one, check the configuration generated for your instance before adding anything; do not create duplicate keys. - Set the values. Enter the intended browser name after
PublicName=, the tagline afterPublicDescription=, andtrueorfalseafterPublic=, according to whether you want a public listing. - Save the file and keep a copy of the original. A backup makes it easier to recover if an edit introduces an unexpected configuration problem.
- Restart the server as a precaution. A restart is a safe operational recommendation, but the available source material does not confirm that it is required for every build. Start the server again and check the browser listing after it is running.
The relevant lines should resemble this example:
Public=true
PublicName=Riverlands Co-op
PublicDescription=Co-op survival, relaxed rulesKeep each setting on its own line and preserve the key spelling, including capitalization. Change the values to suit your server; do not copy the example name or description unless you want to use them.
Check whether the server name appears in the browser
If the server does not appear under the new name, check the configuration in this order. These checks distinguish a wrong setting or file from a server that is not configured for public listing.

- Confirm you edited the active instance’s file. A server may have a custom instance name and therefore a correspondingly named INI file. Editing an unused
servertest.iniwill not change a differently named instance. - Check
PublicName, notServerName. The browser listing name is controlled byPublicName. A guide that changes onlyServerNamemay not change the name players see. - Check
Public=true. If the value is false, the server is not configured to appear in the public browser. Use false when you intend to keep the server off that listing. - Check the saved file and restart. Confirm the edited values are still present after saving. Restarting is the prudent next step because a live-application requirement is not established for all versions.
- Verify the description separately. The description is controlled by
PublicDescription, not by the public name. If the name updates but the tagline does not, check that key in the same active INI file.
If the intended values are saved in the correct file and the server is public but the listing still does not reflect the change, the configuration facts here cannot establish whether the cause is a version-specific behavior, a host-specific setup, or another issue. Check the current build’s instructions and your provider’s server-management guidance rather than making unrelated INI changes.
Do not rely on an old launch-parameter rename method
An older Steam guide for Build 41 describes renaming a server by adding a -servername argument to the end of the StartServer64.bat launch line. That guide is about four years old, and its instructions may not apply to a current build. For the browser name, the configuration setting identified by the guides is PublicName; do not treat the old launch-parameter method as a substitute unless instructions for your specific build confirm it.

Build-specific instructions can change as Project Zomboid updates. A Build 42 wiki guide listed the default branch as version 42.20.3 on 17 August 2026. That date is not a guarantee that 42.20.3 remains current on 14 October 2026. Before following a version-specific procedure, confirm the current branch and build in Steam and use instructions that match it.

You do not need to change unrelated server settings just to update the name and tagline. In particular, reported guides disagree about the default value of MaxPlayers: one gives 32 and another 64, without enough information to resolve which applies to a given generated file. If you need to know your server’s player limit, inspect the configuration actually generated for your instance rather than changing it as part of a browser-name edit.

The minimal edit is to the three public-listing keys: PublicName for the browser name, PublicDescription for the tagline, and Public to enable or disable public listing. Preserve the rest of the server configuration unless you have a separate reason to change it.
