To change a Left 4 Dead 2 server’s welcome message, edit left4dead2/motd.txt, put either HTML/text or a hosted-page URL in that file, enable the MOTD in left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg, and restart the server. The separate host.txt file controls the narrow host banner, not the main MOTD page.
What the Left 4 Dead 2 MOTD files do
Left 4 Dead 2 uses more than one text file for information shown to connecting players. Editing the wrong file is the most common reason a change appears to have no effect.

A dedicated-server guide describes the MOTD section as working like the host banner: a hosted HTML file can be specified by placing its URL on one line at the top of the text file, or the HTML can be written directly into the file. Fragnet’s documentation describes the MOTD as text shown to players when they join the server.
Before you edit anything
- Have administrator or file-manager access to the dedicated server.
- Know whether the server is a normal filesystem installation, a managed host-panel installation, or a Docker deployment.
- Stop the server before changing files when possible. If your host provides a file manager that safely edits stopped-server files, use that instead of changing a live file.
- Download or copy the existing
motd.txt,host.txt, andserver.cfgas backups. A backup makes it easy to undo a malformed HTML edit or an accidental configuration change. - Use a plain-text editor or the host panel’s code editor. Avoid a word processor that may insert rich-text formatting or nonstandard quotation marks.
Standard filesystem procedure
1. Stop the server
Use the service manager, control panel, or server console to stop the Left 4 Dead 2 instance. Editing while the process is writing configuration can produce a partial file or have your changes overwritten during shutdown. If your provider explicitly supports safe online editing, follow that provider’s procedure; otherwise, stop first.
2. Open the correct game directory
Navigate to the installation’s left4dead2 directory. The file you need is directly inside that directory as motd.txt; it is not normally inside left4dead2/cfg. The configuration file used later is in the separate cfg subdirectory.
3. Edit motd.txt
Open left4dead2/motd.txt and remove the default content or replace it with your own. You have two supported content styles.

Option A: put content directly in the file
You can enter plain text or HTML in motd.txt. Inline content keeps the message on the server and avoids a second web host. A minimal HTML example is:

</html>Keep the markup simple and save the file as ordinary text. If the server or game client renders only part of the markup, the plain words should still communicate the important information.
Option B: point to a hosted page
Instead of embedding HTML, put the complete HTTP or HTTPS URL on a single line at the top of motd.txt. The URL must be the only content on that line; do not surround it with quotes or explanatory text. This approach lets you update the web page without repeatedly editing the game server, but the page must remain reachable to the clients that load it.

4. Enable the MOTD in server.cfg
Open left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg and add this line if it is not already present:
motd_enable 1Save the file without changing the spelling or adding punctuation. The principal dedicated-server instructions and Fragnet’s setup directions use motd_enable 1. A separate command reference reports a similarly named motd_enabled spelling. Do not assume the two names are interchangeable: game branches, plugin layers, and documentation versions can differ. If motd_enable is rejected or has no effect, enter the candidate cvar in the server console, check the response, and use the spelling that your particular server accepts.
5. Start or restart the server
Start the instance again, or perform a full restart through the host panel. A restart ensures the configuration is loaded and gives the server a clean opportunity to read the edited MOTD file.

6. Reconnect and verify
Leave the server, reconnect as a player, and check the welcome display. If your configuration or client presents the MOTD only when a player opens it, open that panel manually rather than judging the change solely by the connection screen. Test with a second account or ask another player to confirm what is rendered; an administrator’s cached page can look different from a first visit.
Changing the MOTD through a managed host panel
Managed game-server providers usually expose the same files through a browser file manager. The labels vary, but the sequence is consistent:

- Stop the server with the panel’s Stop control.
- Open File Manager, FTP Files, or the equivalent tool.
- Open the
left4dead2directory and editmotd.txt. Do not choosehost.txtunless you intend to change only the banner. - Save the inline text/HTML or place the hosted URL on its own line.
- Open
left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg, addmotd_enable 1when required, and save. - Start the server, wait until it reports that it is running, then reconnect and inspect the MOTD.
If the panel has separate Save and Apply buttons, use both. Some panels stage edits until the service is restarted. Download the edited files afterward if the panel offers that option, so you retain a copy of the exact version that was tested.

Docker deployments
Left4DevOps Docker documentation describes MOTD display as configurable and supports supplying simple content through MOTD-related configuration. For more complex content, it documents mounting the host’s files into the container at:
/motd/host.txt
/motd/motd.txtIn that arrangement, the file on the Docker host is the source of truth. Edit the mounted host-side file, then recreate or restart the container according to your compose or deployment procedure. Editing a file inside a running container without a persistent mount can be lost when the container is replaced.

The same documentation identifies HOST_CONTENT as accepting plain text or an HTTP URL, while MOTD_CONTENT is the content shown when the MOTD is viewed. Use the variable names and enable/disable switches documented by your image version, because container images can expose settings differently from a traditional installation. Confirm the resulting container mounts and environment values before troubleshooting the game file itself.

Choosing inline HTML, a hosted URL, or Docker configuration

Why the MOTD is not showing
The wrong file was edited
If the narrow banner changed but the main welcome page did not, you probably edited host.txt. If nothing changed, check that the edited file is left4dead2/motd.txt, not a file under left4dead2/cfg or a backup directory. Host panels sometimes contain multiple server instances; verify the instance identifier before saving.
The enable cvar is missing or unsupported
Open server.cfg and verify the line used by your server. The commonly documented form is motd_enable 1. Run the cvar from the server console and read the response rather than assuming that a similarly spelled command is valid. If a plugin or startup script executes after server.cfg, it may override the value; inspect the final console output after startup.
The server was not restarted
A file save does not necessarily make a running instance reload its MOTD. Stop and start the server, then reconnect. When a host panel shows a pending restart or an old process ID, complete the restart before testing again.

For a URL-based MOTD, open the exact address in a browser and confirm that it responds without requiring a login. Make sure the URL occupies one line by itself in motd.txt. For inline content, temporarily replace complex markup with a short plain-text sentence. If plain text appears, add HTML elements back gradually to identify the offending markup.
The client is showing a cached or different view
Reconnect after the restart and, where available, open the MOTD panel directly. Test from another client or account. A previously loaded hosted page may be cached, while a new player may see the current version immediately.
Docker is using a different file
Check the container’s mount declaration and confirm that the host file is mounted to /motd/motd.txt or /motd/host.txt as intended. Inspect the container logs for mount, permission, or content-parsing errors. If the file was edited inside the container rather than on a persistent mount, recreate the change on the host and restart the container.
Read the server console
After each restart, inspect console output for a missing-file message, a rejected cvar, a permission problem, or an HTML/content-loading error. Console evidence is more useful than repeatedly changing files because it identifies whether the failure occurred during configuration loading, file lookup, or page rendering.

Writing a MOTD that remains readable
- Put the most important rule or connection instruction near the top, where a player sees it without scrolling.
- Use short paragraphs and headings rather than one large block of text.
- State server-specific rules, voting expectations, communication channels, and contact instructions only when they are current.
- Keep a plain-text fallback sentence in inline content so the message remains useful if HTML rendering is limited.
- For hosted pages, avoid requiring a sign-in or client-side interaction just to read the rules.
- Record the date of substantive rule changes in your own administration notes, not necessarily in the player-facing message.
- Back up the working file before experimenting with formatting.
Final verification checklist
- The server is stopped or the provider’s safe-edit workflow was used.
- The main message was edited in
left4dead2/motd.txt. host.txtwas changed only if the banner also needed updating.- The MOTD content is either valid plain text/HTML or a single-line hosted URL.
server.cfgcontains the MOTD-enable cvar accepted by this server branch or plugin setup.- The server and, for Docker, the container were restarted.
- A fresh connection was tested, including the manual MOTD view if the server does not display it automatically.
- The console was checked for file, cvar, URL, HTML, mount, or permission errors.
