Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For ARK: Survival Evolved, change the community-configured MaxTamedDinos value in the [ServerSettings] section of GameUserSettings.ini. Stop the server before editing, save the file, and restart it so the setting loads. The default is not reliably established: community guides cite both 4,000 and 5,000, so check your own server rather than assuming either number.
Which ARK game are you running?
The setting described here applies to ARK: Survival Evolved dedicated servers. ARK: Survival Ascended is a different game with different configuration behavior, and reports about its tame limits conflict. Confirm the game and configuration path before changing anything.

If you are unsure which game your host is running, identify the server profile first. Applying the Survival Evolved line to an Ascended server can produce no change even when the file saves correctly.
What the MaxTamedDinos setting does
MaxTamedDinos is described in community server configurations as a server-wide cap on tamed dinosaurs. The available evidence does not establish whether “server-wide” means all tribes combined, a per-map total, or another internal scope on every build. Treat the value as a cap whose exact accounting rules should be verified on your running server.

The setting is normally written as an integer on its own line, for example:
[ServerSettings]
MaxTamedDinos=9500The number 9,500 is an example found in a community configuration, not an official recommendation or default. Another community example uses 3,700. Use a value that fits your server’s population, hardware and management policy rather than copying an example blindly.
Before editing: checks that prevent lost changes
- Confirm the game edition. Use the Survival Evolved procedure only for a Survival Evolved server.
- Identify the active configuration file. Hosts can expose several profiles, maps or instances. Edit the file attached to the server you actually start.
- Stop the server cleanly. Configuration is read during startup. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten when it shuts down or simply have no effect until a later restart.
- Make a backup. Copy
GameUserSettings.inibefore changing it, preserving the original filename and a dated backup copy. - Check for a control-panel override. A hosting panel may regenerate the file or apply its own tame-limit field at startup. If the panel and file disagree, the panel can win.
- Use plain text. Do not paste smart quotes, bullets or formatting characters into an INI file.
How to change the limit on ARK: Survival Evolved
Step 1: Stop the server
Use the server console, game panel or service manager to issue a normal stop. Wait until the process is fully offline and the panel no longer reports it as running. This protects the saved configuration and prevents the server from replacing your edit during shutdown.
Step 2: Open the active GameUserSettings.ini file
On a typical Linux dedicated server, the commonly used path is:
/ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/GameUserSettings.iniOn a Windows dedicated server, the folder is commonly named WindowsServer instead of LinuxServer:
ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/GameUserSettings.iniThe exact root path varies by host and installation. Search the server’s ShooterGame/Saved/Config directory if the panel does not provide a direct editor. Do not edit a local single-player file when the goal is to change a remote dedicated server.

Step 3: Find or create the ServerSettings section
Open the file in a text editor and locate the section header:
[ServerSettings]Many options are not present in the default file. If MaxTamedDinos is missing, add it beneath the [ServerSettings] header. Keep the spelling and capitalization exactly as shown by the community configuration convention:

MaxTamedDinos=5000If the section already contains settings, add the new line without deleting unrelated entries. A section header must use square brackets, and the assignment must use one equals sign. Avoid adding quotation marks or a trailing comment to the value.
Step 4: Choose a value
The available community material does not establish an official default or a tested maximum. One guide lists 4,000 as the default; other references cite 5,000, but that figure is not backed by a verifiable official page. Treat both as claims, not facts. Examples of 9,500 and 3,700 appear in community configurations, but they are neither defaults nor performance guarantees.

A high cap can make abandoned creatures harder to manage and can increase the amount of persistent game data your server must maintain. Set a policy first—for example, a limit for the entire server or an agreed tribe allowance—then encode the corresponding integer.
Step 5: Save without changing the filename
Save the file as GameUserSettings.ini. Check that your editor did not append .txt or change the character encoding in a way your host rejects. The line should remain readable as:

MaxTamedDinos=YOUR_NUMBERIn a real file, replace YOUR_NUMBER with digits only; do not include brackets, commas or a thousands separator.
Step 6: Start the server and allow a full boot
Start the server from the same panel or service that normally launches it. The setting is loaded at boot, so a restart is required even if the file timestamp changed. Wait until the server finishes loading before testing. Starting and immediately stopping it can make it difficult to tell whether the new configuration was accepted.

Step 7: Verify the running configuration
After startup, inspect the active file again. If the line disappeared or reverted, a panel template, startup script or second configuration profile may have rewritten it. If the line remains but the in-game cap appears unchanged, stop the server and investigate overrides before repeatedly raising the number. The default is disputed, so compare behavior with the value you explicitly set rather than with an assumed baseline.
Editing through a hosting panel
Many hosts offer both a text-file editor and a form-based settings page. Use whichever method controls the actual server profile, but do not assume that a visible field and an INI edit are independent. A panel can write its own value after you save the file, or it can regenerate missing lines when the server starts.
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the panel’s file manager or configuration editor and select the profile’s
GameUserSettings.ini. - Look for an Advanced, Expert or Raw configuration view if the ordinary settings form does not expose
MaxTamedDinos. - Add or edit the line under
[ServerSettings]. - Save the panel configuration, then check the raw file to confirm the exact spelling and value.
- Start the server and check the file again after boot.
If the panel has a separate tame-limit field, decide which value should be authoritative and keep them identical. If the panel does not document the field, ask the host which file and section its startup process reads; do not assume that a similarly named Ascended option controls a Survival Evolved server.
Why the number may appear not to work
The server was not restarted
Editing while the server is running does not load the setting immediately. Stop it completely, save the file, and start it again. A quick panel refresh is not a substitute for a process restart.

You edited the wrong file or profile
Multiple maps, clusters and operating-system folders can each have their own saved configuration. Confirm the path shown by the launch profile and verify the file’s modification time after saving. A change in an unused template will have no effect on the active instance.
The section or key is malformed
Common mistakes include placing the line before any section header, typing MaxTamedDino instead of MaxTamedDinos, using a colon instead of an equals sign, or inserting spaces and punctuation copied from formatted text. The expected form is:
[ServerSettings]
MaxTamedDinos=9500Keep one key per line and remove duplicate entries while troubleshooting. If a file contains the same key more than once, the parser or host may use an unexpected occurrence.
A host panel rewrote the file
Some panels maintain a generated configuration and overwrite manual edits on startup. Compare the file before and after boot. If your line is removed or replaced, set the value in the panel’s raw configuration area or disable the conflicting generated setting, if the host allows it.

You are testing an existing population, not the cap
A limit change does not remove creatures, consolidate tribes or reorganize existing tames. Test with the server’s actual ownership and counting rules in mind. Because community references do not clearly define whether the cap is pooled across tribes, do not infer the scope from a single tribe’s count.
The server is actually ARK: Survival Ascended
Ascended reports use a different key, MaxPersonalTamedDinos, and disagree about whether it belongs in GameUserSettings.ini or in Game.ini under [/script/shootergame.shootergamemode]. Users have also reported a limit remaining at 100 despite changing an INI value and a host-panel field. Those reports are not enough to establish a universal fix. Confirm your host’s documented Ascended configuration and determine whether the panel overrides manual files.

Survival Ascended: what is and is not established
Do not copy the Survival Evolved line into an Ascended server and expect it to work. Community discussions report a per-tribe or personal key named MaxPersonalTamedDinos=250, but the reported file locations conflict. One account places it in GameUserSettings.ini; another places it in Game.ini beneath [/script/shootergame.shootergamemode].
The same discussions include a no-effect case in which a reported limit stayed at 100 after both an INI edit and a host-panel change. That means a syntactically correct line is not proof that the server has accepted the value. For Ascended, use the host’s current instructions for your game build, inspect which file is regenerated at startup, and verify the effective limit after a complete restart.
Choosing a sensible cap
Because no official default, official maximum or published performance study is established for this setting, choose conservatively and increase in stages. Record the previous value before each change so you can roll back quickly.
- Small private server: Start with a modest integer that reflects the number of active players and their intended breeding projects.
- Established community: Increase only when players are demonstrably blocked by the cap, and pair the change with an ownership or abandonment policy.
- Large or long-running world: Treat a very high number as an operational decision. Monitor save size, restart duration and administrative workload rather than assuming that a larger cap is free.
The examples 3,700 and 9,500 show that communities use different policies; they do not tell you which number your server can sustain. Keep a change log with the date, old value, new value and observed result.
Rollback procedure
- Stop the server normally.
- Restore the backup of
GameUserSettings.ini, or replace the edited line with the previous value. - Check that the restored line is under
[ServerSettings]and that no duplicate remains. - Save the file and start the server.
- Confirm that the active file still contains the rollback value after startup.
Rolling back the configuration changes the cap; it does not automatically delete tamed creatures that already exist. If the cap is lower than the current population, ask your host or administrators how that build handles an over-cap state before removing anything.
