Change the capacity of a Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server in its startup configuration with -maxplayers N. For example, a 16-slot launch command is cs2 -dedicated -maxplayers 16 +map de_dust2. Restart the server after saving the change, then confirm that the selected game mode and map can use the requested number of players. The sv_visiblemaxplayers setting only changes the number shown to prospective clients; it does not create additional joinable slots.
The setting that actually changes server capacity
-maxplayers N is the launch parameter to edit. Replace N with the total number of player slots you want, such as 10, 16, or 32. It belongs in the command or control-panel startup configuration, not as a substitute for a browser-display setting.

Before you change the limit
- Use a dedicated server process. The documented Valve syntax starts with
cs2 -dedicated. A listen server started from a normal game client is a different setup and may not expose the same startup controls. - Identify where startup arguments are stored. On a self-hosted installation this is usually the script, service definition, or command used to launch CS2. In a managed panel it is commonly a startup-parameter field.
- Choose a mode and map together. A server-wide slot value does not guarantee that every mode/map combination has meaningful gameplay for that many active players.
- Plan a restart. The process must be restarted after the launch configuration changes so CS2 reads the new value.
Step-by-step: increase or reduce the CS2 player limit
1. Stop the running server cleanly
Stop the dedicated-server process before editing its launch configuration. This prevents the old process from continuing to advertise or enforce the previous value and avoids having a management panel overwrite an unsaved change during shutdown.
2. Edit the launch configuration
Add -maxplayers N to the command or startup field. To allow 16 total players, use -maxplayers 16. To reduce a server to 12, replace it with -maxplayers 12. Do not write +maxplayers; the player-limit parameter is documented with a hyphen.

If your launcher separates executable arguments from console commands, put -maxplayers N in the executable/startup-argument section alongside -dedicated, while +map de_dust2 remains a console-style startup command.

3. If you use a managed control panel, change Player Limit
The CubeCoders AMP Counter-Strike 2 template labels the relevant field Player Limit and maps it to maxplayers. Enter the desired number in that field, save the configuration, and use the panel’s restart action. The template documents a numeric range of 1–64 and a default of 32 for that field. Those values describe the template’s setting; they are not a published Valve table proving that every CS2 mode and map supports 64 active players.
4. Start or restart the server
Start the server again after saving the launch configuration. A map change alone is not a reliable substitute for restarting the process when the value is a launch parameter. Wait for the server to finish loading, then check its console or management-panel status for the normal ready state.
5. Verify the effective value
Check the startup command or panel summary to make sure the new number was retained. Then join with an authorized client or observe the server’s player list while the server is empty and while players connect. If the process still behaves as though the old value is active, stop it and inspect the actual command used to launch the process; editing a template or shortcut that is not used at runtime will have no effect.

Capacity and visibility are different controls
Two settings are often confused because both contain the word “players.” They affect different parts of the system.

Valve’s console-command description for sv_visiblemaxplayers is: “Overrides the max players reported to prospective clients.” That wording is why changing it cannot solve a server that refuses a new connection after its real capacity is reached.
How many players can a CS2 dedicated server hold?
There is no current universal CS2 player-cap table in the cited Valve dedicated-server material. Do not treat the older Source Support range of 1–32 as a CS2-specific rule. The practical answer depends on the value accepted by your launcher or management template and on the mode and map you run.

The AMP CS2 template documents 1–64 for its Player Limit field, with 32 as the default. That is useful when configuring that template, but it should not be presented as proof that Valve guarantees 64 playable slots in every official mode. After selecting a number, verify the behavior of the actual mode and map on your server.
Modes listed by the CS2 management template
The template exposes separate configurations for Casual, Competitive, Wingman, Arms Race, Deathmatch, Training, Custom, Guardian, and Co-op Strike. These modes have different rules and intended team structures. A high server-wide value may therefore be impractical, ignored by a particular scenario, or produce an experience unlike a standard match even when the process accepts the number.
Map-specific behavior
Maps are not interchangeable containers for an arbitrary number of players. Spawn points, objective logic, team design, and mode scripting can limit the number of players who can participate sensibly. Select the map with the mode, start the server, and verify actual joins rather than assuming that a configured number equals the number of useful in-game positions.

Why the browser shows the wrong number
The browser shows fewer players than your configured limit
Inspect sv_visiblemaxplayers. If it has been set below the value in -maxplayers, prospective clients may see the lower advertised number even though the process has a larger capacity. Correct the visibility setting only if the displayed figure is meant to match the real capacity. Then refresh the listing or reconnect the browsing client so it receives the updated server information.
The browser shows more players, but nobody can join
A value in sv_visiblemaxplayers that is higher than the actual launch limit can make the listing look fuller than the server really is. Return the visible value to an honest figure and leave -maxplayers N as the capacity control. If the server was recently restarted, confirm that clients are seeing the newly started instance rather than a stale listing.
The panel displays one number but the command uses another
Read the generated startup command or the panel’s effective-configuration view, not just a saved form field. A second startup script, service definition, or command-line override can replace the value entered in the interface. Remove the duplicate or edit the configuration that actually launches cs2, then restart.
Team balance is separate from total capacity
Increasing the server limit does not automatically make teams even. mp_limitteams governs the permitted difference between team sizes. The Valve-developer command guide describes mp_limitteams 0 as disabling that check. Use this setting only when you understand the mode’s team rules: disabling the check can allow a large imbalance even though the server has enough total slots.
Conversely, a strict team-difference rule can prevent a player from joining or switching teams while there are still unoccupied server slots. When diagnosing an apparent capacity problem, check the total limit, the selected mode, and team-balance rules independently.
Self-hosted versus managed configuration

A reliable verification checklist
- Confirm the server starts with
-dedicated. - Read the effective launch command and verify one intended
-maxplayers Nvalue. - Confirm that the number is within the range accepted by your launcher or template.
- Check the selected game mode and map before inviting a full group.
- Restart after every launch-configuration change.
- Inspect
sv_visiblemaxplayerswhen the browser count differs from the configured capacity. - Inspect
mp_limitteamswhen players cannot join a team despite free server slots. - Record the final startup value and mode/map combination so the next restart reproduces the same setup.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing only
sv_visiblemaxplayers: this alters the advertisement, not the number of connections the server can accept. - Editing a file that is not used at launch: always verify the effective command or generated panel configuration.
- Skipping the restart: a running process keeps its existing launch-time value.
- Assuming the template range is a universal game rule: 1–64 is documented for the AMP template, while Valve has not published a current universal CS2 cap table in the cited material.
- Ignoring mode and map design: a technically accepted slot count may not produce a playable or supported match.
- Blaming capacity for a team-balance block: check
mp_limitteamsseparately.
What to do when a change is rejected
If the panel refuses the value, use a numeric value within its documented range or consult that panel’s validation message. If the process fails to start after editing the command, restore the last known-good command, check for a missing space or malformed argument, and then add the player-limit option again in the form -maxplayers N. If the process starts but the old capacity remains, inspect for a second launch definition or an override and perform a full restart. If joins fail only in one mode or map, switch back to a known-supported combination to determine whether the restriction is scenario-specific rather than a server-wide limit.
