To change the total number of bases on a Palworld dedicated server, stop the server, edit the active PalWorldSettings.ini, change BaseCampMaxNum inside the single OptionSettings=(...) line, save the file, and restart. On Windows the active file is under PalSavedConfigWindowsServer; on Linux it is under Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer. A separate key, BaseCampMaxNumInGuild, controls the limit for each guild.
What the two base-limit settings control
Palworld has two different limits that are easy to confuse. BaseCampMaxNum is the server-wide base budget. It is shared by every guild and player on that server. If the value is 200, the server can have up to 200 bases in total, subject to the per-guild cap and the game’s other rules.

A guild can still be blocked when the global BaseCampMaxNum budget has been consumed, even if its own guild allowance is higher.

Use the global key when the entire server needs more bases. Use the guild key only when guilds need a different allowance and the server-wide budget is already sufficient. In many cases both keys must be considered: a guild needs room under its own cap and room in the shared server total.

Where the active configuration file is located
Windows dedicated server
The official Windows path is:
steamappscommonPalServerPalSavedConfigWindowsServerPalWorldSettings.iniThe path is relative to the Steam library containing the dedicated server. The file you must edit is the one in the live SavedConfigWindowsServer directory, not the template file stored elsewhere in the installation.
Linux dedicated server
The official Linux path is:
steamapps/common/PalServer/Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.iniLinux uses forward slashes and the LinuxServer directory. Pocketpair’s Linux setup example first copies DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini into this active directory and then edits the copied file. Editing the default template alone has no effect; the guide states, "Note that editing DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini will not affect the changes."
Hosted control panels and containers
A managed host may expose the same value through a configuration panel rather than a visible file editor. Some Docker deployments expose it as the BASE_CAMP_MAX_NUM environment variable, which maps to BaseCampMaxNum. If a panel or container regenerates configuration at startup, an in-file edit can be overwritten. In that situation, set the value in the panel or environment configuration that owns the deployment, then restart from that same control.
Safe procedure for changing the total server limit
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly. Use the server’s normal shutdown control and wait until the process has fully exited. Do not edit while the server is writing its configuration or world data.
- Make a backup. Copy the current
PalWorldSettings.inito a separate location and retain the original filename in the backup. This gives you a known-good file to restore if the server fails to start or a panel rewrites the setting. - Open the active file. Choose
WindowsServeron Windows orLinuxServeron Linux. Confirm that the file’s modification time and location match the installation you actually start. - Find the single option line. The settings are stored in one line beginning with
OptionSettings=(. Use your editor’s search function forBaseCampMaxNum=. - Change only the value. For example, change
BaseCampMaxNum=128toBaseCampMaxNum=200. Keep the key name, equals sign, commas, parentheses, and all unrelated options intact. - Save as the same file. Do not change the extension, character encoding, or directory. A file saved as a second copy or with an extra extension will not be read by the server.
- Restart the server. Start it through the same service, script, panel, or container that normally launches it.
- Test with an eligible guild. Ask a guild that has not reached its separate
BaseCampMaxNumInGuildcap to place a base. This avoids mistaking a guild-limit rejection for a global-limit failure.
The most important formatting rule is preservation: keep the existing OptionSettings=(...) line intact and edit the numeric value in place. Removing a comma, parenthesis, or neighboring key can prevent the configuration from loading even when the new number itself is valid.

Changing the per-guild limit instead
If the problem affects one guild’s allowance rather than the server’s total capacity, edit BaseCampMaxNumInGuild in the same OptionSettings=(...) line. For example, a line containing BaseCampMaxNumInGuild=3 can be changed to another permitted value.
Pocketpair’s current server guide lists 10 as the maximum bases per guild and warns that larger base counts increase processing load. Treat that figure as the guide’s current documented maximum for 2026; do not assume that a higher number will be accepted by every build or hosting panel.

Changing the guild value cannot bypass the global budget. Suppose the server-wide value is 128 and several guilds already occupy all 128 bases. Increasing one guild’s allowance still leaves no unallocated global capacity. Conversely, a high global value does not let a guild exceed its own guild cap.
Choosing a sensible value
Use the smallest increase that solves the placement problem. Every additional base can add world objects, workers, storage, pathing, and simulation activity. Pocketpair explicitly warns that increasing the relevant base limits raises processing load, so a large value should be treated as a performance change, not merely a convenience setting.

A practical planning sequence is:
- Count the bases currently used by all guilds, not just the guild requesting another base.
- Check the guild’s own
BaseCampMaxNumInGuildallowance. - Leave headroom for new players instead of setting the global value exactly equal to today’s count.
- Increase in stages and observe startup behavior and in-game responsiveness after each restart.
- Record the old and new values so you can roll back quickly if the server becomes unstable.
Do not treat the shipped default as universal. Paldb.gg reports BaseCampMaxNum=128 in DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini for build 4570950001, extracted on 15 September 2026. Versioned official pages show that defaults can differ between releases, so read the value in the template and active file shipped with your own build before deciding how much to change.
Why an edit may appear to do nothing
The server was still running
A running server may continue using the configuration it loaded at startup, and it may overwrite the file when it shuts down. Stop it completely, verify that the process has exited, then edit and restart.

The most common path error is editing DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini or a copy outside the live save directory. Recheck the exact directory: WindowsServer for Windows and LinuxServer for Linux. The active file is the one under PalSavedConfig... or Pal/Saved/Config/....
The key is outside OptionSettings
Ensure BaseCampMaxNum=... appears inside the existing OptionSettings=(...) expression. A separate line or a misspelled key will not change the server setting.

A control panel restored its own value
Some managed services write the configuration from panel fields or startup variables. If your manual edit disappears after a restart, compare the panel’s value with the file and change the authoritative panel field. For containers, check whether BASE_CAMP_MAX_NUM is defined in the environment and update that value before recreating or restarting the container.
The guild cap is the actual blocker
If other guilds can place bases but one guild cannot, inspect BaseCampMaxNumInGuild. A global increase will not help a guild that has already reached its own allowance.
The server is using a different installation
Multiple Steam libraries, staging folders, or separate test servers can each contain a PalWorldSettings.ini. Confirm that the path belongs to the executable and service instance you launch. A correctly edited file in an unused installation has no effect.
The server starts but the number is unchanged
Check the saved file after shutdown and again after startup. If the value reverted, an automated configuration layer is rewriting it. If it remained changed but placement is still blocked, check both the global and guild limits and test with a guild below its cap.

Related settings that do not increase base count
BaseCampWorkerMaxNum governs how many Pals can work at an individual base. Raising it may change activity inside an existing base, but it does not permit another base to be created.
MaxBuildingLimitNum is a per-player building-count cap. Players can encounter that limit while constructing, even when the server still has unused base capacity. Changing it is therefore a building-limit decision, not a base-count decision.
Keeping these settings separate prevents a common troubleshooting loop: changing worker or building limits, restarting repeatedly, and still seeing a base-placement message caused by either the global budget or the guild allowance.

Operational precautions for a live server
Schedule the change when players are offline or warn them about the restart. Keep the backup until you have confirmed that the server starts normally and the new limit works. If the server fails to start, stop it, restore the backup, and start again; then compare the edited line character by character.
Document the build number, old value, new value, date, and whether the value was set in a file, panel, or environment variable. This is especially useful when a future update supplies a different default or a host regenerates the configuration.

Do not delete world-save files as a routine response. No authoritative documentation establishes that deleting WorldOption.sav is universally required for a base-limit change. Treat such advice as deployment-specific and ask the host before taking an irreversible step.
Quick decision guide
- Every guild needs more total bases: raise
BaseCampMaxNumin the active file, then restart. - Only one guild needs another base: check that the server-wide budget has room, then adjust
BaseCampMaxNumInGuildwithin the documented maximum. - The value resets: update the hosting panel or

The reliable pattern is simple: edit the live PalWorldSettings.ini, preserve its option line, restart the server, and evaluate both the shared server budget and the per-guild allowance. Keep increases conservative because Pocketpair warns that larger base limits add processing load, and recheck defaults after version updates rather than carrying forward an old number.
