Rust maps are selected when the server launches, not from an in-game menu. Stop the server, change its startup convars (or the hosting panel’s Startup fields), and restart it. For a procedural map, set server.seed and server.worldsize; for a downloaded custom map, set server.levelurl. Changing a seed or world size creates a new world, so back up the existing save before you restart.
Choose the type of map you want
Rust supports two practical ways to select a map. A procedural map is generated from a numeric seed and a world-size value. A custom map is supplied as a .map file at a direct URL. Decide which method you need before editing anything, because the settings behave differently.

The server.level convar identifies the map type. For a procedural map its usual value is Procedural Map. Do not assume a particular current default world size: published references disagree, and defaults can change. Query the running server instead of relying on an old guide.
What changes when you alter the map
Changing server.seed or server.worldsize generates a different world. Bases, cupboards, deployables, monuments and other placed objects belong to the old save and do not move to the new terrain. Treat the operation as a wipe of the active world, even if you keep the old files on disk.

Switching from a procedural save to a custom map should also be planned as a separate world. Keep the old save until players have confirmed that the new map is working and you no longer need a rollback. Never delete a save as the first step.
Back up the current world first
A backup gives you a way to restore the previous map if the new seed is unsuitable, a custom file fails to load, or a panel change overwrites the wrong configuration.
- Stop the Rust server completely. Wait for the process to exit rather than copying files while the server is still writing a save.
- Locate the world-save directory. One commonly documented location is
server/server1/; the exact instance folder can differ with the server installation and hosting provider. - Copy the entire instance folder to storage outside the live server directory.
- Give the copy a useful name containing the old seed, world size and backup date, such as
before-map-change-2026-10-14. - Check that the copy contains files and folders and that its size is plausible before you edit the live configuration.
Keep the backup untouched. If you later restore it, stop the server again, preserve the failed world as another backup, and then put the saved instance folder back in the location used by your server.
Change to a new procedural map
1. Preview a seed
Use a Rust map preview service such as RustMaps to inspect possible terrain before committing. Record the exact seed and the world-size value used for the preview; changing either produces a different layout.
2. Stop the server
Use the server’s normal Stop control or stop the process from the machine running it. Do not edit a startup command while the server is still online and then assume the running process has changed.

3. Edit the launch configuration
Self-managed servers normally receive convars in a startup script or in server.cfg. A startup command uses the convars as launch arguments:
+server.level "Procedural Map" +server.seed 123456789 +server.worldsize 3500In a configuration file, use the file’s existing syntax, for example:
server.level "Procedural Map"
server.seed 123456789
server.worldsize 3500The numbers above are examples. Replace them with the seed and size you selected. Keep only one active value for each convar. If an old startup script and a configuration file both set server.seed or server.worldsize, the value read last may win, making troubleshooting confusing.
4. Start the server and wait for generation
Save the configuration, start the server and allow the world-generation process to finish. A larger world can take longer to generate and uses more memory than a smaller one. Do not repeatedly restart while generation is in progress.
5. Verify the values in the console
After startup, query the running convars:
server.seed
server.worldsizeCompare the returned values with your configuration. A forum report describes an occasional seed off-by-one result, where the effective seed is one higher than the entered value. The console value is the one to record and use for future previews, so verify it rather than assuming the text in the startup file is authoritative.

6. Test as an administrator or player
Connect to the server, confirm that the loading screen completes, and inspect the terrain around the spawn area. Check that the expected world size and major landmarks are present before announcing the wipe. If the old bases are still visible, the server probably loaded the previous save or did not receive the new convars.
Load a custom .map file
1. Obtain a direct map URL
server.levelurl must point directly to the custom .map file, not to a web page, a preview image or a download form. The server machine must be able to reach the URL and download the file during startup.
2. Back up and stop the current instance
Follow the backup procedure above, then stop the server fully. A custom map is a world change, so retain the procedural save until the replacement has been tested.
3. Set server.levelurl
Add the URL to the startup configuration or the host panel’s Startup field, preserving any required quoting:

+server.levelurl "https://example.invalid/my-map.map"The address shown is only a syntax example; use the actual direct URL for your map. Remove obsolete procedural arguments if they create confusion. When server.levelurl is active, Rust ignores server.seed and server.worldsize for map selection.

4. Restart and inspect the log
Start the server and watch the console for download or map-loading errors. A successful launch should proceed past map loading and allow a client to connect. If the URL returns an HTML page, requires a login, redirects to a temporary address or is blocked from the server machine, the map cannot load even though the setting is spelled correctly.
Changing a map through a hosting panel
Provider interfaces differ, but the workflow is the same. The labels below are illustrative rather than universal.
- Open the server’s management page and stop the instance.
- Open Startup, Launch Parameters or the equivalent advanced configuration section.
- For a procedural map, enter or edit
server.level,server.seedandserver.worldsize. For a custom map, enterserver.levelurl. - Save the settings. Some panels require a separate Save, Apply or Reinstall button; do not restart until the panel confirms that the new values are stored.
- Start the instance and use its live console to query
server.seedandserver.worldsizewhen using a procedural map.
Do not edit a panel-managed startup file and a panel field at the same time unless you know which one has priority. A panel may regenerate the command line on every restart, discarding manual file edits. If the console shows old values, return to the panel’s Startup view and remove duplicate or conflicting entries.
Why the old map may keep loading
The new values are not in the actual launch command
Read the first part of the startup log or the panel’s generated command line. Confirm that the intended server.seed and server.worldsize appear there. Editing an unused script has no effect.
A duplicate setting overrides your edit
Search the startup script, server.cfg and panel fields for every occurrence of the three procedural convars. Leave one deliberate value for each. Restart after saving, then query the live console again.

The previous save is being reused
Map settings are applied at launch, but an existing save can make it appear that no change occurred when the server did not start a new world. Confirm the console values, stop the server, and inspect the backed-up and live instance folders. Do not remove files until the backup is verified.
The seed appears different by one
Record the value returned by server.seed. Because an off-by-one result has been reported, use that verified value when checking a preview or documenting the wipe.
The custom map does not load
Check that the URL is direct, publicly reachable from the server machine and ends with the expected map file. Look for HTTP, permission, redirect and download errors in the startup log. Ensure that an old panel value is not replacing server.levelurl on restart.
World size, performance and planning
The documented recommended range for server.worldsize is 1,000–6,000. Larger worlds provide more terrain but increase generation time and memory pressure. Available memory requirements vary by server build, plugins, player count and operating environment; there is no single dependable gigabyte figure to apply to every installation. If the server struggles during generation, choose a smaller size, close unnecessary processes and monitor the host’s memory rather than relying on a generic estimate.
Choose the size together with the player population. A small community may not need the operational cost of a very large world, while a busy server may want additional terrain to spread players out. Whatever value you select, write it down with the verified seed so the same map can be reproduced later.
A safe map-change checklist
- Decide between procedural generation and a custom
.mapfile. - For procedural generation, select a seed and a world size in the documented ranges.
- Preview the procedural seed and record the exact values.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the complete instance folder, including the commonly used
server/server1/location when applicable. - Edit the startup script,
server.cfgor hosting panel Startup fields. - Remove duplicate convars and ensure the panel is not overwriting your file.
- Restart once and wait for world generation or custom-map download to complete.
- Query
server.seedandserver.worldsizein the console for a procedural map. - Connect and inspect the world before telling players to join.
- Keep the old backup until the new map is accepted.
What to record for the next wipe
Keep a short change record containing the map method, the verified seed, world size, custom-map URL if applicable, date, server build and backup location. The verified console seed matters more than the number typed into a panel if an off-by-one result occurs. This record lets you reproduce a preferred procedural layout or roll back without guessing which files belonged to which wipe.

Change Rust’s map in the launch configuration, not in-game: use server.seed and server.worldsize for a procedural world, or server.levelurl for a custom map. Stop the server, back up its save, restart with one set of unambiguous values, and verify the live console before players return. A seed or size change is a new world, so the backup is the safeguard that makes experimentation reversible.
