To change an Unturned server’s map, stop the server, edit the Map line in Commands.dat, save the file, and restart the server. A Steam Workshop map needs two settings: its numeric Workshop ID in WorkshopDownloadConfig.json with Workshop downloads enabled, plus the map’s exact name on the Map line. Map selection is read during startup, so changing a file or typing a map command while the server is running will not switch the current session.
What controls the map on an Unturned server?
Unturned reads the map setting when the dedicated-server process starts. For a normal, built-in map, the setting is the Map command in the server instance’s Commands.dat file. The basic format is one space between the command and value:
Map GermanyDo not use a colon or an equals sign. The value must be the map name accepted by the server, including its capitalization. A guide from Supercraft warns that germany is not the same as Germany; a spelling or case error can fail quietly and leave the server on its default map, PEI.
Workshop maps add a separate download step. The Workshop item’s numeric ID tells the server what to download, but it does not by itself select the world. You must still put the creator’s exact map name in Commands.dat. This two-part setup is also described by Restore Monarchy and Holy.gg.

Before you edit anything
- Identify the correct server instance. Hosts often run several Unturned instances. Open the files for the instance whose players should receive the new map, not a similarly named test or backup server.
- Plan a maintenance window. Stopping the process disconnects players. Map selection is a startup setting, so an online edit cannot take effect until the process is restarted.
- Record the current setting. Copy the existing
Mapline somewhere safe before changing it. This gives you a quick rollback if the new name is wrong. - Back up the configuration files. Save copies of
Commands.datand, if you are adding a Workshop map,WorkshopDownloadConfig.json. A backup is especially useful when a control panel regenerates files. - Obtain the exact map name and, for Workshop content, the ID. Use the spelling shown by the map creator. The ID is the number after
id=in the Steam Workshop page URL.
There is no single folder layout shared by every host. One commonly documented panel path is Servers → [instance] → Server, while other providers expose the same files elsewhere. The host-specific guides from MintServers, Servers4Gamers, and Axenthost use different file-manager layouts. If you cannot see the file in that location, check the panel’s file manager documentation rather than creating a second file in an arbitrary directory.
Change to a built-in Unturned map
1. Stop the server completely
Use the host’s Stop or Shutdown control and wait until the panel reports that the process has exited. The map is loaded at process start; entering a map command in a live console is refused and editing the file while the process is still running has no immediate effect. The startup requirement is covered in the procedures from Supercraft and Servers4Gamers.
2. Open the instance’s Commands.dat
In a typical game-server panel, open the instance, enter its Server folder, and open Commands.dat in the panel editor. Download the file first if the panel does not provide version history. Do not edit a similarly named local copy unless you know that the host synchronizes it back to the server.
3. Add or replace the Map line
Use the map name exactly as the game or map documentation presents it. If the file already contains a Map line, replace its value instead of adding conflicting duplicate lines. The command has no punctuation:

Map PEI
For another built-in map, substitute its exact name:
Map Germany
Names are case-sensitive in the guides cited above. Do not write Map: Germany, Map=Germany, or a name copied from a different version of the map. If the server cannot resolve the value, the failure may be silent and the default PEI map can appear instead of an explicit error.

4. Save, close, and restart
Save the file, close the editor, and start the same server instance. Wait for it to finish starting before testing the connection. If the old map is still presented, stop the process again and work through the troubleshooting checks below; repeatedly changing the line while the process is live will not help.
Set up a Steam Workshop map
A Workshop map requires both downloading the item and selecting it. The ID and the map name serve different purposes:

1. Copy the Workshop ID
Open the map’s Steam Workshop page and copy the number after id= in the address. Copy only the numeric ID, not the complete URL. If you have several Workshop maps or other Workshop items, keep each ID in the existing list and separate entries with commas; do not leave a comma after the last entry. The installation procedures at Restore Monarchy and Holy.gg describe this list-based setup.
2. Enable Workshop downloads
Open WorkshopDownloadConfig.json in the server’s Servers area. Make sure its Workshop setting is true, then add the numeric ID to the file’s existing ID list. Preserve the JSON structure already supplied by your host: keep quotation marks, brackets, commas, and property names intact. An extra comma, a missing quote, or an ID placed outside the list can make the configuration invalid.
3. Put the exact map name in Commands.dat
Return to Commands.dat and set Map to the name the creator uses in the Workshop description. The numeric ID is not a substitute for this value. For example, the line must have the map’s name, not the URL number:

Do not copy that text literally; replace it with the real name, preserving spaces and capitalization. If the creator documents a required spelling, follow that spelling even when it differs from the Workshop page title.

4. Start once to download the item
Save both files and start the server. On this first start, the server should download the Workshop item before loading the selected map. Large maps can take longer than a normal restart. Allow the startup process to finish rather than stopping it midway, then connect and confirm that the intended terrain loads.
5. Add additional maps without replacing the current one
You can place more than one Workshop ID in the download list, separated by commas, but only the name on the current Map line determines which map is selected at startup. To switch among already downloaded maps later, stop the server, change only the Map value to the other map’s exact name, and restart. Keep every required ID in the download configuration if the server may need those items after a future restart.

Use a hosting control panel instead of editing files
Some managed hosts expose a MAP field in a Startup tab. In that case, the panel writes or overrides the startup value, so use that field rather than editing a file the panel may regenerate.
- Stop the Unturned server.
- Open the instance’s Startup, Configuration, or equivalent settings tab.
- Find the field labeled MAP or Map.
- Enter the exact built-in or Workshop map name, including capitalization. Enter the name, not the Workshop ID.
- Save the startup settings and start the server.
For a Workshop map, the panel’s MAP field still does not replace the download configuration. Add the Workshop ID and enable downloads wherever that host exposes those settings, then use the MAP field for selection. If both a panel field and Commands.dat exist, treat the panel as authoritative and check which value it writes after saving.

The paths in this table are logical locations, not a promise that every provider uses identical folders. Confirm the instance and file locations in your own panel; provider-specific instructions from Red Switches and Axenthost illustrate why the visible path can differ.
Troubleshoot a map that does not change
The server still opens on the previous map
- The process was not restarted. Stop it completely, save the file, and start it again. A live console command or an edit made during runtime cannot change the loaded world.
- You edited the wrong instance. Verify the server name, port, and instance folder before changing the file again.
- The panel overwrote the file. Check the Startup tab’s MAP field and inspect
Commands.datafter saving. Use the panel’s setting if it regenerates the file. - The name is not an exact match. Check capitalization, spaces, and spelling against the creator’s listing. A bad value can fall back to PEI without an obvious error.
The Workshop map is selected but its content is missing
- Confirm that
Workshopis set totrue. - Check that the ID is the number after
id=in the Workshop URL and that it is inside the existing ID list. - Validate commas and quotation marks in
WorkshopDownloadConfig.json, especially when adding a second or third ID. - Start the server once after saving so it has an opportunity to download the item. Do not assume that entering the ID in the MAP field downloads anything.
- Use the exact map name from the creator’s description on the
Mapline. The ID alone cannot select the map.
The server silently falls back to PEI
Recheck the Map value character by character. The documented failure mode is quiet fallback rather than a clear “map not found” message, so a successful server start does not prove that the requested name was accepted. Restore the known-good line from your backup if necessary, then test the new name again after correcting its case and spelling.
Workshop difficulty or map options revert
A Steam Community discussion reports a map developer saying that a map can overwrite its configuration when the default option is used and suggesting edits to the map’s own configuration file: Steam Workshop discussion. Treat that as map-specific guidance rather than a universal Unturned rule. If the map loads but a difficulty setting resets, read the creator’s instructions and identify the map’s own configuration file before changing unrelated server settings.
The file is not where a guide says it should be
Host panels do not all expose the same directory tree. Search the server instance’s file manager for Commands.dat and WorkshopDownloadConfig.json, check the panel’s server-management documentation, or ask the host which folder belongs to the running instance. Do not create a second file merely because a tutorial shows a different path.
Safe rollback and repeatable map changes
- Stop the server and wait for a clean shutdown.
- Copy the current
Commands.datand Workshop configuration before editing. - Change only the setting needed for the next map: the
Mapvalue for an already available map, or the Workshop ID/download setting as well when installing new content. - Save the files, verify that the map name contains no accidental punctuation, and start the server once.
- If the result is wrong, stop the server, restore the backup, and restart. This is safer than deleting configuration files or repeatedly adding duplicate
Maplines.
Keeping the Workshop IDs in the download list and changing only the startup map name makes later switches predictable. Always apply the change to the same instance that players use, because a correct setting in a different server directory has no effect on the live server.
