Run changelevel <mapname> in the dedicated-server console or through RCON. For example, changelevel de_mirage loads Mirage. Workshop maps use ds_workshop_changelevel; configure a Workshop Collection first when your server requires one. Never use map_workshop in a dedicated-server console.
The quickest way to change a CS2 server map

changelevel de_mirageReplace de_mirage with the internal name of the map you want. The same command can be sent through an authenticated RCON connection. The Valve Developer Community’s game-modes documentation describes both map and changelevel as console commands that load a map: Valve Developer Community: Game Modes. That page is community documentation rather than a current, dedicated CS2 command reference, so test commands on your particular server build before putting them into automation.
What you need before changing the level
- Server control: You must be able to type in the dedicated-server console or connect with RCON credentials. A normal player’s in-game console is not the same as the dedicated-server console.
- The correct map name: Standard maps use their server-side names, such as
de_mirage. A spelling error produces an error instead of a successful level change. - A plan for players: Tell connected players when the change will happen. A level change can end the current round and reload server rules, spawn points and entities.
- Workshop availability: The server must be able to obtain the Workshop map. If the map is supplied through a Workshop Collection, that collection must be configured before collection-specific commands can select it.
- Console visibility: Keep the server log or console open. Downloading a Workshop map for the first time can take long enough to look like a frozen server.
Save any match, practice or administration state that matters before issuing a level change. The command changes the running level; it is not a substitute for a backup or a configuration export.

Change to a standard CS2 map from the server console
Step-by-step
- Open the console window provided by your dedicated-server host, container or terminal process.
- Confirm that the process is accepting server commands, not commands intended only for a connected client.
- Enter
changelevel, a space and the map’s internal name. For example:changelevel de_mirage - Press Enter and watch the console for the level-load messages.
- Wait until the server reports that the new level is active before judging the change as failed. Clients may need a moment to reconnect or finish loading.
A Tencent Cloud CS2 hosting guide lists changelevel <mapname> as a server-admin command, with de_mirage as an example: Tencent Cloud, How to Host a CS2 Server on a Cloud Server. The command is the same whether the process is running on a physical machine, virtual machine or container; the console location and permission model differ.
Use the map name, not the display name
The text shown in a server browser or map vote is not always the token accepted by the command parser. Use the map’s internal name. For a standard competitive map, that normally means a prefix such as de_ followed by the map name. If the console says the map cannot be found, check spelling, capitalization and the files installed on the server instead of repeatedly sending the command.

RCON sends server-console commands over a remote administrative connection. After connecting with the RCON client, issue exactly the same command:
changelevel de_mirageRCON procedure
- Enable and secure RCON in the server configuration according to your server host or installation method.
- Connect to the server’s RCON endpoint with its address, port and password. Do not publish the password in a script repository, chat message or public support ticket.
- Send
changelevel <mapname>as one server command. - Read the RCON response and the server log. A successful response may be followed by several lines while the level initializes.
- Close the RCON session or revoke the temporary credentials when remote administration is no longer needed.
RCON is useful when the server runs without an interactive terminal, but it does not change the command syntax. If a local console accepts a command and RCON rejects it, investigate authentication, permissions, quoting and the RCON client rather than changing the map token.

changelevel versus map
Both commands are described as ways to load a map, but they are not interchangeable in every operating situation. A general CS2 command guide reports that changelevel is intended to move the running server to another map while keeping players connected when possible, whereas map can reset server variables or disconnect everyone: VRedux, CS2 change map command.

For a routine rotation or an administrator-initiated switch, start with changelevel. Choose map only when its reset behavior is deliberate and you have warned players. Neither command should be treated as a guarantee of zero interruption; clients still have to load the new level.
Switch to a Workshop map
Workshop maps are handled differently from maps already installed as part of the standard server content. The command commonly documented for an available Workshop map is:
ds_workshop_changelevel <map_name>GameHostBros describes ds_workshop_changelevel as a change-level command that takes a Workshop map name: GameHostBros, How To Play Workshop Maps On Your CS2 Server. The joedwards32 CS2 dedicated-server Docker image documents the related commands ds_workshop_listmaps and ds_workshop_changelevel $map_name, and notes that they apply when a Workshop Collection is set: joedwards32/CS2 on GitHub.

When a Workshop Collection is configured
- Configure the server’s Workshop Collection using the control panel or startup settings supplied by your hosting method.
- Restart or start the server if the host requires startup settings to be read only during launch.
- From the server console or RCON, list the maps exposed by the collection with:
ds_workshop_listmaps - Use the exact name returned by the list command:
ds_workshop_changelevel <map_name> - Monitor the console until the Workshop level is downloaded, mounted and active.
The Docker documentation’s variable-style example is:
ds_workshop_changelevel $map_nameHere, $map_name represents the value you supply; it is not a literal map name unless your environment defines that variable.
Map name or Workshop ID?
Published CS2 hosting guides do not agree on whether every server build accepts a Workshop map name, a numeric Workshop ID, or both for ds_workshop_changelevel. The map-name form is the one described by the GameHostBros guide and the joedwards32 image documentation, but command behavior can vary with the server image and collection setup. Start by listing the collection and using the exact returned name. If the command rejects it, read the command’s response and your host’s current documentation before trying an ID; do not assume that an ID accepted by one image is valid on another.
Do not use map_workshop in the dedicated-server console
map_workshop is often shown in client-side instructions, but Game Server Kings warns that it is flagged client-side and does not host a Workshop map when entered in a dedicated-server console: Game Server Kings, How to add Steam Workshop maps for CS2. Use the dedicated-server command ds_workshop_changelevel instead.

What happens on the first Workshop download
If the server does not already have the selected Workshop content, it may download it before changing levels. Game Server Kings reports that the first download can make the server appear unresponsive. Check the console output instead of immediately stopping and restarting the process. A restart interrupts the current attempt and starts the download again, extending the outage.
- Normal signs: download, extraction or mounting messages continue to appear in the console; CPU, disk or network activity may change while the content is prepared.
- Do not assume failure from silence alone: allow time for the map size, server connection and storage speed involved.
- Investigate a real failure: look for explicit permission, network, Workshop, missing-content or map-load errors after the console has stopped progressing.
- Retry only after diagnosis: restarting without reading the error can repeat a failed download rather than fix it.
Load a Workshop map at startup
Some hosting panels and server installations support loading a Workshop map or collection through startup parameters alongside a standard starting map. Host Havoc documents this startup-parameter approach in a guide updated June 10, 2026: Host Havoc, How to load Workshop maps on your CS2 server.

The exact fields and parameter names depend on the control panel, server image and whether you specify an individual map or a collection. Use the panel’s current CS2 startup documentation rather than copying a parameter intended for a different installation. The operational pattern is:
- Enter the Workshop collection or map value in the startup configuration.
- Keep a valid standard map selected as the server’s ordinary startup map when the panel requires one.
- Save the configuration and perform a controlled restart.
- Read the startup log to confirm that the collection or Workshop content was recognized.
- After startup, use
ds_workshop_listmapsandds_workshop_changelevelfor later changes when those commands are available.
Startup configuration is preferable when the server must come back on a known Workshop map after a reboot. The runtime command is faster for a one-off administrative switch once the content is available.

Verification after issuing the command
Do not rely only on the command prompt returning. Verify the transition from both the server and player perspectives:
- Confirm that the console identifies the requested map and reaches its normal running state.
- Check the server browser or an administrative status view for the new map name.
- Ask a connected client to confirm that the loading screen completes and the player reaches the new map.
- Check that the intended game mode, spawn points and essential server plugins initialized after the level load.
- If the server returns to the previous map, inspect the final error lines for an unavailable file, invalid Workshop selection or startup configuration that overrides the change.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“Unknown command” or no response
- Make sure you are in the dedicated-server console or an authenticated RCON session, not the client console.
- Check that the command is spelled exactly:
changelevelfor a standard map andds_workshop_changelevelfor the documented Workshop workflow. - Confirm that the server process is fully started and accepting administrative commands.
- For a container image, check the image’s current command list and environment-variable requirements; commands can differ between images.
“Map not found” or an immediate load error
- For a standard map, verify the internal map name and that the server installation contains the map files.
- For a Workshop map, run
ds_workshop_listmapswhen a collection is configured and copy the returned name exactly. - Check whether the collection setting was applied at startup. A collection that was never loaded cannot be selected at runtime.
- Read the console for a missing-content or permission message before restarting.
The server appears frozen during a Workshop change
Look at the console for download or extraction activity. A first-time Workshop download can look unresponsive; restarting starts the download over, according to Game Server Kings. Wait for completion unless the log shows a definite error, then correct that error before trying again.

changelevel is the less disruptive choice for a normal transition, and one cited CS2 guide reports that it can keep players connected. It is not a promise that every client remains connected. A map command may reset variables or disconnect everyone, so use it only when that behavior is acceptable. Network timeouts, client loading failures and mode-specific restarts can also remove players independently of the command.
The command works locally but not over RCON
- Test the same command in the local server console to separate map problems from RCON problems.
- Recheck the RCON address, port, password and administrative permissions.
- Remove shell quoting or special characters added by the RCON client unless that client’s documentation requires them.
- Compare the RCON response with the server console; the console usually contains the more complete map-load error.

Practical administration checklist
- Identify whether the target is a standard installed map or a Workshop map.
- Notify players and decide whether a possible reconnect is acceptable.
- For a standard map, send
changelevel <mapname>. - For a Workshop map, verify the collection and list available maps before selecting one.
- Watch the server console, especially during the first Workshop download.
- Verify the new map, mode and player access after loading.
- Record the working map name and any collection/startup settings for the next maintenance window.
Bottom line
Use changelevel <mapname> for an installed CS2 map, through the server console or RCON. For Workshop content, configure the collection when required, list its maps, and use ds_workshop_changelevel with the exact available map name. Avoid map_workshop, and never restart merely because a first-time Workshop download looks slow—read the console first.
