How to Change the Map on a BeamMP Server

Godlike.Host offers hosted BeamNG.drive servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.

To change a BeamMP server’s map, stop the server, edit the Map entry in ServerConfig.toml under [General], save the file, and start the server again. Stock levels normally use a path such as /levels/gridmap_v2/info.json. For a custom level, upload its ZIP to Resources/Client and make the path match the level-folder name inside the archive exactly, including capitalization and underscores.

What you need before changing the map

You need access to the BeamMP server’s files and permission to stop and start that server. The configuration file is named ServerConfig.toml and is stored in the server folder alongside files such as Server.log and BeamMP-Server.exe.

• Tell connected players that the server will restart. A hosting guide reports that players may be disconnected for about 30 seconds while the map changes.
• Stop the BeamMP server before opening or saving the configuration. Editing a running instance can leave the active process using the old value or overwrite your change when it shuts down.
• Make a backup copy of ServerConfig.toml so you can restore the previous settings if a syntax or path error prevents startup.
• Use a plain-text editor that preserves TOML syntax. Avoid word processors that add formatting or smart quotation marks.

Change a stock BeamMP map

1. Stop the server. Use your host’s Stop control or stop the BeamMP server process cleanly.
2. Open the server folder. Locate ServerConfig.toml, not a similarly named client or backup file.
3. Find the [General] section. The map setting belongs in this section.
4. Edit the Map line. Keep the key spelled Map, put the path in straight double quotation marks, and use the level path required by your server. For example:
   Map = "/levels/italy/info.json"
5. Save the file. Do not add a second Map key elsewhere in the file.
6. Start or restart the server. The new map is selected when the server reads the configuration during startup.

The official BeamMP documentation shows Map = "/levels/ks_nord/info.json" as a sample. That line demonstrates the format; it is not evidence that ks_nord is the default map for every installation.

Use the correct level path

For the common BeamMP configuration format, the value follows this pattern:

/levels/<level-folder-name>/info.json

The folder name is the directory under the game’s levels collection. Replace only the name portion; retain the leading /levels/ and the level file name expected by your server.

Paths are not interchangeable labels. A typo, missing underscore, different capitalization, or an extra directory level can point to a level that does not exist on the server.

Install and select a custom map

Custom maps are distributed as ZIP archives. The archive must be available to clients through the server’s client-resource directory before the server can use it.

1. Obtain the map ZIP. Use the archive supplied for the BeamMP/BeamNG.drive map and keep its original ZIP format.
2. Open the server’s Resources/Client folder. Upload the map ZIP there. A hosting guide specifically advises uploading mod ZIPs as-is rather than unzipping them.
3. Inspect the archive’s directory structure. Inside the ZIP, locate the levels/ directory and note the level folder immediately below it.
4. Build the Map value from that folder name. If the archive contains levels/desert_rally/, the usual value is /levels/desert_rally/info.json, provided that this is the level file convention your host accepts.
5. Match the name exactly. Preserve every underscore, letter, and capital letter from the folder name. Do not substitute the ZIP filename for the internal level-folder name.
6. Save ServerConfig.toml and restart the server. Clients may need to download the resource before they can join the custom level.

The important relationship is between the Map path and the folder inside the ZIP. Renaming the archive alone does not change that internal path.

When info.json does not work

Most of the available BeamMP setup guidance uses an info.json level path. One hosting guide instead shows an Italy example ending in main.level.json:

Map = "/levels/italy/main.level.json"

That conflicts with the info.json convention used by the official sample and other guides. Treat the filename as a host or level-package compatibility issue rather than changing the folder name at random. If a correctly named level is not loading, check your host’s current configuration examples or support documentation to determine which level file it expects, then use the filename that actually exists in the level package.

Do not assume that changing info.json to main.level.json will fix every map. The path must identify a real file in the installed level, and different packages may expose different files.

Restart and verify the result

1. Confirm that the edited file is the ServerConfig.toml used by the instance you restarted. Hosts may keep multiple server directories for different instances.
2. Start the server and wait for it to finish loading before testing a connection.
3. Join with a client and check that the expected level name and scenery appear, rather than relying only on the server’s name or description.
4. If the server disconnects players briefly during the transition, allow the restart to complete; one guide estimates the interruption at about 30 seconds.
5. If the old map remains active after a restart, stop the instance again and verify the exact key, section, path, and file being edited.

Troubleshoot a map that will not load

The server starts on the previous map

• Check that the line is under [General] and that there is only one active Map entry.
• Verify that you restarted the same server instance whose configuration you edited.
• Look for a spelling or capitalization difference in the path.
• Make sure the editor saved the file as ServerConfig.toml, rather than appending an extra extension such as .txt.

The server fails to start after editing

• Restore the backup copy to confirm that the problem is limited to the edit.
• Check for straight quotation marks around the path: Map = "/levels/italy/info.json".
• Remove duplicate Map lines and keep the setting in the existing [General] block.
• Ensure that no stray characters, markdown backticks, or comments were inserted into the value.

A custom map is reported as missing

• Confirm that the ZIP is in Resources/Client, not only on your own computer.
• Confirm that the archive was uploaded intact. The cited hosting guidance recommends leaving mod ZIPs zipped.
• Open the ZIP and compare the directory below levels/ with the <level-folder-name> portion of the Map path.
• Check capitalization and underscores character by character.
• Verify the level filename convention. The package or host may require info.json or, in some documented examples, main.level.json.

Players cannot join even though the server starts

• Give the server time to complete its restart and resource loading before testing.
• Confirm that clients can receive the custom ZIP from the server’s client-resource location.
• Check whether the path points to a level file that exists in the archive; a valid TOML line can still reference a nonexistent file.
• Have a test player reconnect after the restart rather than attempting to remain in the session that was terminated.

Use a repeatable map-change checklist

• Announce the maintenance window.
• Stop the BeamMP server.
• Back up ServerConfig.toml.
• Upload any custom ZIP to Resources/Client without unzipping it.
• Read the level folder name inside the ZIP.
• Set Map under [General].
• Use /levels/<exact-folder-name>/info.json unless your host or package documents another level filename.
• Save, restart, and allow the brief disconnect to finish.
• Connect as a player and verify the actual loaded map.

What not to change

A map change normally requires changing only the Map value. Do not rewrite unrelated server settings while troubleshooting a level path; keeping the edit narrow makes it easier to identify whether the problem is the path, the resource ZIP, or the restart. The exact defaults for other configuration keys are not established by the available BeamMP documentation cited here, so they should not be altered based on assumptions from another server.

Key points to remember

The reliable workflow is configuration-based: stop the server, edit ServerConfig.toml, set the map path under [General], and restart. Stock maps generally use the /levels/<name>/info.json form. Custom maps require the ZIP in Resources/Client and an exact match between the path’s folder name and the folder inside the archive. If a host documents a different level filename, follow that host’s requirement and confirm that the referenced file is actually present.
