The language in Ocarina of Time is usually controlled by the console, not by a universal in-game menu. On Nintendo Switch, open HOME Menu > System Settings > System > Language, choose a language, allow the console to restart, then reopen the game. The selected language takes effect only if that particular release supports it. In the European/Australian Ocarina of Time 3D release, the documented choices are English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian; any other 3DS system language falls back to English.
Find the instructions for your version
There is no single language procedure shared by every edition of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The correct steps depend on the platform, the release region, and the language list built into that edition.

Before changing anything, identify the exact version on your screen or game packaging. “Ocarina of Time” on an original Nintendo 64 cartridge, “Ocarina of Time 3D” on 3DS, and a Virtual Console release can have different language behavior even when the game content is otherwise similar.
Start with a quick identification check
Look at the title displayed on the HOME Menu or in your game library. Ocarina of Time 3D is the Nintendo 3DS remake, while an N64 cartridge and a Virtual Console download are separate editions. Then note where the software was sold: a European/Australian 3DS copy is not automatically equivalent to a North American copy, and a European Virtual Console listing is not proof about another region’s release.

Also write down the language currently selected on the console. This gives you a controlled test: change one system setting, restart the software, and compare the result. If the title has no documented support for the chosen language, a successful console change can still leave the game in English. That outcome is a compatibility limit, not necessarily a faulty setting.
Change the language on Nintendo Switch
Nintendo Support states that a game or software application uses the console’s selected language so long as the software supports that language. This is a system-level setting; you do not normally change the language from an Ocarina of Time save screen. The rule applies to Switch and Switch 2 support guidance, but the individual Ocarina of Time release still determines which translations are actually included.
Step-by-step
- Save your progress and close Ocarina of Time if it is running. Saving first avoids losing unsaved progress when the system restarts.
- From the Switch HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Language.
- Choose the language you want to test.
- Confirm the change when prompted. Nintendo says the console restarts, and suspended software is closed.
- After the HOME Menu returns, launch your Ocarina of Time release again.
The restart matters because a game that was suspended before the change may be closed rather than refreshed in place. Relaunching it gives the software a new opportunity to read the console language. Check menus and ordinary dialogue after launching, not just the title screen, because a partial change or a title-specific limitation may otherwise be mistaken for a successful translation.
What to check before expecting a translation
- Confirm that the game is a release whose supported-language information includes your choice. The Switch setting changes the console preference; it cannot add text that is not included in the game files.
- Check the game’s region and edition. A language available in one market’s release may not be present in another.
- Use the title’s official support or product information when the result is unclear. Nintendo’s general rule is conditional on support by the individual software.
- Make sure you changed the Switch language rather than a keyboard, news, or account preference. Only the console language setting is relevant to this behavior.
If the game stays in the old language
Do not keep repeating the same setting change. First confirm that the Switch actually saved the new language, then close and relaunch the game. If the console language is correct and the game still uses the previous language, the most likely explanation is that this release does not support the selected language. The Switch procedure itself cannot overcome that limitation.
Region is especially important when two releases have similar names. A listing that includes French or German does not establish that every digital or cartridge edition includes those files. Treat the supported-language list for your exact product as decisive. If no list is available, record the platform and region and consult that edition’s Nintendo product page or manual rather than assuming all Switch-family software behaves identically.
Change the language in Ocarina of Time 3D on Nintendo 3DS
The European/Australian Ocarina of Time 3D manual states: “The in-game language depends on the one that is set on the system.” Its documented language set is:
- English
- German
- French
- Spanish
- Italian
If the 3DS system is set to one of those five languages, the game displays that language. If the system uses another language, the documented default is English. This is a defined fallback, so seeing English after selecting an unlisted language is expected behavior for that release.

- Save your game and exit to the 3DS HOME Menu.
- Open System Settings.
- Open the 3DS system-language control. The game manual directs players to the Nintendo 3DS system manual for the exact settings path and labels.
- Select English, German, French, Spanish, or Italian.
- Apply the system change as requested by the console, return to the HOME Menu, and start Ocarina of Time 3D again.
Changing the language in the game’s save-screen Options menu will not switch the text. In the documented release, that menu is for gameplay controls and camera options; language selection follows the 3DS system setting. You therefore do not need to create a new save, alter controller options, or change a file-specific preference.

Examples of the 3DS fallback behavior
- A system set to French should produce French text in the European/Australian release.
- A system set to Italian should produce Italian text in that release.
- A system set to English should, naturally, display English.
- A system set to a language outside the five documented choices, such as one not listed in the manual, falls back to English.
Regional caution
The five-language list comes from the European/Australian 3DS release manual. It should not be treated as a promise for every regional 3DS edition. If your cartridge or download was sold for another market, identify that edition before assuming it has the same language set. A different regional manual or product page may list different support, and the European fallback rule should not be applied automatically to another edition.
What the Nintendo 64 and Virtual Console listings establish
Nintendo Germany’s product information lists English, French, and German for its European Nintendo 64, Wii Virtual Console, and Wii U Virtual Console versions. That is useful for identifying what those European listings contain, but it does not establish one shared language-setting procedure for every original cartridge and emulated release.
Original Nintendo 64 cartridges
Start by identifying the cartridge region and the console on which it is running. The available North American manual information does not provide a confirmed, general language-setting path for all N64 editions. Do not assume that the 3DS system-language instructions apply to an N64 cartridge. Consult the manual or support information for the specific cartridge and hardware combination.
Language support and language selection are separate questions on this platform. A European listing can tell you that English, French, and German text exists, but it does not tell you whether a particular cartridge reads a console preference, uses a regional boot setting, or is fixed to one language. Avoid changing unrelated television, controller, or save settings while looking for a menu that may not exist.
Wii and Wii U Virtual Console
The European listings document English, French, and German availability. They do not, by themselves, prove that every Virtual Console edition reads a console-wide language preference in exactly the same way as Switch software. Check the edition’s regional information and platform documentation, then relaunch the software after any console-language change that the platform supports.
If a Virtual Console copy remains in English, first confirm that it is the European listing described above. A different regional download may contain a different language set. Next, check the platform’s own software documentation for how that title selects language. Do not use the 3DS Options menu or the Switch path as a universal remedy.
Why the distinction matters
A language list describes what text is included in a release; a settings procedure describes how that release chooses among those texts. Those are separate facts. A European listing can confirm three available languages without proving that a North American cartridge, a different Virtual Console region, or another emulated build behaves identically.

“Why is Ocarina of Time still in English?”
For the documented 3DS release, English is the fallback when the system language is outside English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. Select one of the supported languages in the 3DS system settings, then restart the game. If the system language is already in that list and the game remains in English, verify that your cartridge or download is the European/Australian edition covered by the manual.

“I changed my Switch language, but the game did not change.”
Switch software follows the system language only when the individual software supports it. Confirm the console setting, let the required restart finish, and launch the game again. If nothing changes, check the release region and its supported-language information instead of assuming that every Ocarina of Time version contains every Switch language.
“Where is the in-game language menu?”
For the documented Ocarina of Time 3D release, there is no separate language selector in the save-screen Options menu. Language follows the 3DS system setting. Switch releases likewise use the console setting when supported, so searching through gameplay menus will not add an unsupported translation.
“Can I use the 3DS steps on an N64 or Virtual Console copy?”

On Switch, Nintendo says changing the language restarts the console and closes suspended software. Start the game again from the HOME Menu after the restart. A suspended copy cannot be used to judge whether the newly selected language is supported.
You selected a language that is not listed for the edition
Return to the release information rather than treating the result as a system error. Unsupported-language fallback is documented for the European/Australian 3DS release, where the result is English. Switch software can similarly remain in its existing language when the selected language is not included.
You changed the setting but only some text appears different
Verify the title and region before drawing a conclusion. The documented rules describe the game’s in-game language, but they do not promise that every surrounding console label, account screen, or platform storefront will match it. Check ordinary dialogue and menus after a full relaunch, then compare the result with the supported list for that edition.
A reliable identification checklist
Use this checklist before changing settings or reporting that a translation is missing:
- Read the platform: Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 64, Wii Virtual Console, or Wii U Virtual Console.
- Confirm the exact title. Ocarina of Time 3D is not the same release as an N64 or Virtual Console version for language-support purposes.
- Identify the region or market of the cartridge, download, or console listing.
- Write down the language currently selected on the console.
- Compare that language with the documented supported-language list for the exact edition.
- Change the platform setting required by that edition, close or restart the software, and test again.

What changing the system language does—and does not do
Changing a system language tells compatible software which included language to display. It does not translate a release that lacks that language, merge language files from another region, or create a universal menu that every Ocarina of Time edition shares.

The clearest documented cases are Switch software that supports the selected console language and the European/Australian 3DS release with its five-language list and English fallback. A single procedure covering every N64 cartridge revision and every Virtual Console region is not established, so those versions require edition-specific checking.

Set the 3DS system language to Spanish in System Settings, apply the change, and relaunch the game. Spanish is one of the five languages documented for that release.
You have the same 3DS release and want a language outside the five listed
The manual documents English as the fallback for an unsupported system language. Changing the 3DS to an unlisted language therefore does not produce an additional in-game translation.

Set System Settings > System > Language to French, allow the restart, and reopen the game. Whether French appears depends on support in that particular release.

The Nintendo Germany listing identifies English, French, and German for that European version. Use the Wii U edition’s own system and software documentation for the setting procedure rather than applying the 3DS path.

Can I change only the game language without changing the console?
