To change a V Rising server’s game preset, stop the server, set GameSettingsPreset to the preset name, save the configuration, and start the server again. On a self-hosted installation, the key is commonly placed in ServerHostSettings.json. On a managed panel, it is usually a Game Setting Preset dropdown. A non-empty preset tells the server to load bundled values, so edits in ServerGameSettings.json may be ignored. Set the preset to an empty string when you want custom game rules.
Quick procedure
- Stop the V Rising server completely. Do not edit a live configuration while the process is running.
- Back up the generated settings files and your save-data folder.
- Open the server host settings file, usually
ServerHostSettings.json, or open your host’s game-settings panel. - Change
GameSettingsPresetto the exact preset name you want, such asStandardPvPwhere that name exists in your installation. - Save the file or panel form, then start the server.
- Connect and test a setting that visibly differs between presets. If your custom values are not taking effect, clear the preset by setting it to
"", and clearGameDifficultyPresetas well if you need fully custom rules.
Always use the preset names supplied by your own server files or hosting panel. Names vary between versions and distributions; a name shown in one guide may not exist in another installation.

What GameSettingsPreset controls
GameSettingsPreset selects a bundled collection of game-rule values. Instead of reading every value from your custom ServerGameSettings.json, the server loads the selected preset from its installed preset definitions. This is why a server can appear to ignore a correctly edited settings file: the preset is still active and has precedence over those custom edits.
The official 1.0.x dedicated-server instructions document the key with StandardPvP as an example. They also document equivalent startup and environment-variable controls: the -preset launch option and the VR_PRESET environment variable. Those controls can override the value written in JSON, so check the command used to launch the server and any service-manager or container environment settings if the file appears to have no effect.

Preset versus custom rules

Find the correct file and installation folder
For dedicated servers, third-party configuration guides commonly put GameSettingsPreset in ServerHostSettings.json. The official documentation confirms the key but does not identify that file in the available 1.0.x summary, so verify the layout created by your server version before editing. Do not assume that a similarly named save file is the active host-settings file.
Preset definitions for the 1.0.x server are described under VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/GameSettingPresets. The related difficulty definitions are under VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/GameDifficultyPresets. A common generated-settings layout also contains a VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/ directory, but the exact location can differ by installation method and host. Use the file that your launch script or panel identifies as the server host settings file.

Self-hosted installation checklist
- Locate the V Rising dedicated-server directory, not the client game directory.
- Find the generated host-settings JSON file, normally named
ServerHostSettings.json. - Find
ServerGameSettings.jsonif you plan to use custom values after clearing the preset. - Locate
GameSettingPresetsto see the names actually installed on that server. - Check your startup script, scheduled task, service unit, container definition, or command line for
-preset. - Check environment variables for
VR_PRESET, which can override the JSON setting.
Why backing up matters
Back up the generated settings files into a save-data folder before changing them. A server update can regenerate or replace files in the installation directory. Keeping a copy with the save data lets you restore the intended preset and custom values after an update or migration. Preserve the original file as well as the edited copy so you can compare changes if the server refuses to start.
Change the preset in a JSON file
Use this procedure when you control the dedicated-server files directly.

- Stop the process. Use the server console or your operating-system service controls to perform a clean shutdown. Wait until the process has exited and no configuration file is being written.
- Make a backup. Copy
ServerHostSettings.json,ServerGameSettings.json, and the relevant save-data directory to a separate location. Include the date in the backup name. - Open the host settings file. Use a text editor that preserves UTF-8 text and does not add rich-text formatting. If the key already exists, edit its value rather than adding a second key.
- Enter the exact preset name. For example, the structure may look like
{"GameSettingsPreset": "StandardPvP"}. Keep the surrounding keys and commas valid JSON. - Save and validate. Check that the file remains valid JSON. A missing comma, an extra comma, or smart quotation marks can prevent the server from reading it.
- Start the server. Watch the startup console for configuration errors. If the server rewrites the file, stop again and inspect which setting source supplied the value.
- Verify in game. Test a rule affected by the selected preset, and check the server log for the loaded configuration if your host exposes one.
Example: selecting a bundled preset
Do not replace the whole file with a short example; retain all existing host settings. The relevant entry should have the same form as this fragment:

Set the game preset to an empty string:
{"GameSettingsPreset": ""}Then edit the desired values in ServerGameSettings.json. If difficulty values are also being supplied by a difficulty preset, set that selector to an empty string too:

Change it from a hosting panel
Managed V Rising hosts commonly expose the selector as a dropdown labelled Game Setting Preset, GameSettingsPreset, or a similar name. Labels and menu locations differ, but the logic is the same.
- Open the server’s configuration or startup-settings page.
- Stop the server if the panel does not stop it automatically before saving.
- Open the game-settings preset dropdown.
- Choose the required preset. If you intend to use values from
ServerGameSettings.json, choose Custom, None, or the panel’s equivalent empty option. - Save or apply the configuration.
- Restart the server and wait for it to finish booting.
- Reopen the panel and confirm that the selected value persisted. Some panels regenerate JSON during startup, so checking only the editor before restarting is not enough.
An active dropdown selection can overwrite ServerGameSettings.json on boot. If custom settings keep reverting, disable the preset in the panel before changing individual game rules.

Choose a preset name safely
Preset names are not universal. One source may list StandardPvE, StandardPvP_Hard, or SoloPvP, while another installation may provide StandardPvP, DuoPvP, StandardPvP_WeekendSiege, or a difficulty name such as Difficulty_Normal. These differences can reflect game version, server build, host packaging, or a separate difficulty selector.
Use the local files as the authority
- Open the installed
GameSettingPresetsdirectory. - Record the file names or preset identifiers exactly, including capitalization, underscores, and suffixes.
- Compare those names with the hosting panel’s dropdown, if applicable.
- Enter only a name that is present in that installation.
- Restart and check the startup output for an unknown-preset error.
If the folder is unavailable, use the panel’s current list rather than copying a name from an older guide. Do not infer that a PvE, PvP, solo, duo, or siege variant exists merely because another server advertises it.

GameSettingsPreset and GameDifficultyPreset
V Rising also has a separate GameDifficultyPreset selector. The official 1.0.x instructions give examples including Difficulty_Easy, Difficulty_Normal, and Difficulty_Brutal, with the -difficultyPreset launch option and VR_DIFFICULTY_PRESET environment variable. Difficulty definitions are stored separately from game-setting definitions.
Do not confuse a game preset with a difficulty preset. A game preset may set many server rules, while the difficulty preset can supply difficulty-related values. A third-party issue report and related change discussion describe difficulty being applied after the game preset, meaning it may win when both define the same value. That behavior is not established as a universal rule for every current version, so test overlapping values on your own build.

Launch arguments and environment variables can override JSON
If changing the JSON has no effect, inspect every other configuration layer. The official 1.0.x instructions document -preset and VR_PRESET for the game preset, plus -difficultyPreset and VR_DIFFICULTY_PRESET for difficulty. A service manager, container definition, batch file, shell script, or panel may be supplying one of these values at startup.
What to check
- Windows shortcut or batch-file arguments after the server executable.
- Linux shell scripts, systemd unit files, and launch parameters stored by the host.
- Container or orchestration environment variables.
- Panel startup-variable fields that are separate from the file editor.
- Automatic configuration templates that rewrite JSON during boot.
Remove or change the overriding value, then restart. If both a launch argument and an environment variable are present, the effective precedence can depend on the server build or wrapper used by the host; test one source at a time and keep the winning configuration documented.

Troubleshooting settings that do not save
The server ignores ServerGameSettings.json
Check GameSettingsPreset first. Any non-empty value can cause bundled preset values to be loaded instead of your custom edits. Clear it, save the custom settings file, and restart.
The file changes back after reboot
A panel or startup template may be regenerating the file. Select Custom or None in the panel, remove conflicting startup arguments, and inspect environment variables. Compare the file before shutdown and after startup to identify which stage rewrites it.

- Restore the last known-good backup.
- Validate JSON punctuation and quotation marks.
- Confirm that the preset name exists locally.
- Ensure the file was saved as plain UTF-8 text.
- Start the server with only the known-good configuration, then reapply one change at a time.
The preset name is reported as unknown
Use the identifiers in the installed GameSettingPresets directory or the host’s current dropdown. Check capitalization and underscores. A name from a different game version or guide may not be packaged in your build.
Custom difficulty values still do not apply
Clear GameDifficultyPreset as well as GameSettingsPreset. Then confirm that the custom difficulty properties are in the correct settings file and that no -difficultyPreset or VR_DIFFICULTY_PRESET value is being supplied at launch.
Version and update considerations
The official documentation is organized by server version. Its 1.0.x page explicitly describes the preset key, while the repository lists a 1.1.x-pc page as the current version. The available 1.1.x summary does not show the preset entries, so do not assume that every 1.0.x path, selector, or preset name is unchanged. Before upgrading, copy the complete settings and save-data folders, then compare the new installation’s preset directories and generated configuration files.
After an update, verify four things before inviting players back: the key still exists, the selected preset is present, custom files were not replaced, and no new launch argument or environment variable has been added by the host. Keep a short change log with the server version, selector values, and backup location.
Verification checklist
- The server was stopped before editing.
- The original host and game settings files were backed up.
GameSettingsPresetcontains either an installed preset name or an empty string.GameDifficultyPresetis intentionally set rather than left active by accident.- The selected name matches the local preset files exactly.
- No

Bottom line
Use GameSettingsPreset to select a bundled V Rising ruleset, and use an empty string when you need custom values. Stop the server first, edit the correct host-settings source, verify local preset names, check launch and environment overrides, and restart before testing. If both game and difficulty behavior must be controlled manually, clear both preset selectors.
