Google Pixel phones do not document a system-wide graphic equalizer with global bass and treble sliders. You can adjust separate volume categories, improve the built-in speaker with Adaptive Sound, clarify eligible calls with Clear Calling, enable Spatial Audio where the phone, content and playback device support it, and use Sound Amplifier for accessibility listening adjustments.

If you specifically want an equalizer, open the EQ in the music or video app you use, or in the companion settings for your headphones. Those controls may affect only that app or accessory; Google’s Pixel documentation does not establish that an app-level EQ changes every sound produced by the phone.

What audio controls are available on a Pixel?

Pixel’s documented sound controls are organized by the job they perform rather than around one master equalizer page. The main choices are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Volume controls: independent levels for media, calls, ringtones, notifications and alarms.
  • Adaptive Sound: environment-aware processing for the phone’s built-in speaker.
  • Clear Calling: processing intended to make supported phone calls easier to hear.
  • Spatial Audio: an immersive playback mode whose availability depends on the Pixel model, content and playback route.
  • Sound Amplifier and Conversation mode: accessibility tools for focusing on speech and adjusting quiet or high/low sounds.

The official Pixel settings pages reviewed do not list a global graphic equalizer. That is different from saying that no equalizer exists anywhere: a streaming app, local music player or headphone accessory can provide its own bass, treble or band controls.

Start by identifying the audio route

Before changing a setting, identify where the sound is coming from and what you are trying to improve. A phone speaker, wired USB-C headphones, Bluetooth earbuds and a phone call do not necessarily use the same controls. This simple check prevents a common mistake: changing Media volume while the problem is actually a quiet ringtone, or enabling a speaker feature while listening through earbuds.

  • Built-in speaker: Adaptive Sound can process this route on supported Pixels. Built-in-speaker Spatial Audio is restricted to a smaller device list.
  • Bluetooth headphones or speakers: use the media volume panel, and look in the accessory’s companion app for EQ controls. Adaptive Sound does not apply to external speakers or headphones.
  • USB-C headphones or a digital audio adapter: use the media volume panel and any manufacturer software supplied with the device.
  • Phone call: the Call slider and, on eligible devices and calls, Clear Calling are the relevant controls.
  • Alarm, ring or notification: these have their own volume categories and are not automatically changed when you adjust music.

Once the route is clear, choose the setting that matches the goal instead of searching for one universal EQ switch.

How to change media, call, ringtone, notification and alarm volume

Pixel keeps the common sound categories separate, so lowering music does not necessarily lower your alarm or ringtone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press either physical volume button.
  2. Tap the menu or More control beside the volume slider. The expanded panel shows the available categories.
  3. Adjust the slider for Media, Call, Ring, Notification or Alarm, depending on what you want to change.
  4. If more than one Bluetooth device is paired, use the media-volume area to choose where media should play, when that option appears.

Google notes that the exact steps can vary by device. If a slider appears to have no effect, check that you changed the category currently carrying the sound: music and videos normally use Media, a phone conversation uses Call, and an alarm uses Alarm.

Make the change while the relevant activity is happening when possible. For example, start a song before adjusting Media, or adjust Call volume during a call. This makes it easier to see which category is active and avoids confusing a quiet source recording with a low phone setting.

Changing a category does not create a tonal change. Volume controls make a route louder or quieter; they do not provide bass, treble or frequency-band adjustment. For the complete control list and Google’s current device-specific notes, see Google’s Pixel volume, sound and vibration guide.

How to make the built-in Pixel speaker sound better

Turn on Adaptive Sound

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration.
  3. Tap Adaptive Sound.
  4. Turn on Use Adaptive Sound (the switch label can vary with software).

Adaptive Sound adjusts speaker output from the phone to fit the surrounding environment without changing the volume. In practical terms, it is intended to make the built-in speaker’s presentation work better in different surroundings while leaving the selected volume level alone. It is automatic processing, not a set of manual frequency bands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google lists support from Pixel 4a (5G) through Pixel 10, including Fold models. The feature also requires current Android software and the latest Android System Intelligence app. If the menu is absent, install available system updates and update Android System Intelligence before assuming the hardware is unsupported. A qualifying model with outdated software can therefore look as though it lacks the feature.

Adaptive Sound is not a bass-and-treble equalizer. It automatically adapts speaker processing; it does not expose frequency bands for manual adjustment. It also does not process music sent to headphones, earbuds or an external speaker. If you switch playback to Bluetooth, judge that device using its own controls rather than the Adaptive Sound result you heard from the phone speaker.

What Adaptive Sound cannot do

  • It cannot supply a universal EQ curve for every app.
  • It cannot change the sound signature of connected headphones or external speakers.
  • It does not increase the volume slider itself; Google describes it as changing speaker output without changing volume.
  • It does not guarantee that every recording will sound louder or better, because the source, route and environment still matter.

How to improve call clarity with Clear Calling

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Sound & vibration.
  3. Tap Clear Calling.
  4. Enable Use Clear Calling.

Clear Calling is documented for Pixel 7 and later, including Fold models. Its availability can depend on call bandwidth, so the option may not be available on every call even when the phone supports the feature. It is a call-processing control, not a setting for music or the phone’s general speaker output.

If Clear Calling disappears or cannot be used during a particular conversation, check both conditions: the Pixel generation must qualify, and the call must have enough bandwidth for the feature. A supported phone alone does not make it available on every network call. Clear Calling should also be evaluated while speaking with the other person; it is designed for eligible call audio rather than recordings, streaming video or notification sounds.

How to turn on Spatial Audio

Spatial Audio is separate from an equalizer: it changes the presentation of supported surround content rather than giving you manual bass and treble bands. It is an optional listening mode, not a requirement for ordinary stereo playback.

Use the Settings app

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration.
  3. Tap Spatial audio.
  4. Turn on the available Spatial Audio option.

You can also open the expanded volume panel while media is playing and enable Spatial Audio there. If the switch is not visible in either place, check the phone’s Android version, the active playback route and the content being played before concluding that the feature is broken. Google advises checking that the phone has the latest Android software before troubleshooting the feature.

Check the playback requirements

Spatial Audio availability is conditional rather than universal. The movie or show must provide a supported surround track; Google specifically lists titles with 5.1-or-higher audio tracks. The Pixel model, headphones or speakers, and the app handling playback can also affect whether the control appears. A title without a supported track may play normally even though the phone and headphones are otherwise compatible.

Pixel Buds Pro head tracking has an additional current-firmware requirement. Spatial Audio through the phone’s built-in speaker is limited to Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the Pixel 10 family and Pixel Tablet. Other supported combinations can use compatible headphones or another supported playback route instead. The result is not a universal “make everything surround” switch: model, content and accessory requirements all have to line up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google maintains the compatibility and setup details in its Spatial Audio help page.

Compatibility at a glance

Feature Supported Pixel range or route What it changes Important dependency
Adaptive Sound Pixel 4a (5G) through Pixel 10, including Fold Built-in phone speaker output Current Android and latest Android System Intelligence; not headphones or external speakers
Clear Calling Pixel 7 and later, including Fold Eligible phone-call audio Call bandwidth can determine availability
Spatial Audio Supported Pixel models with compatible content and playback devices Immersive playback presentation Supported content, model and playback setup; 5.1-or-higher tracks are listed for supported movies and shows
Spatial Audio from built-in speakers Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 10 family and Pixel Tablet Immersive playback from the device speakers Limited to the listed devices
Conversation mode in Sound Amplifier Pixel 3 and later, including Fold Speech-focused listening Located under Accessibility and intended as an assistive listening control

The ranges are feature cutoffs, not a promise that every software build presents identical labels. Google can change a menu name or location while retaining the same requirement, so use the feature description and route as well as the model number when checking compatibility.

How to adjust listening for speech and hearing accessibility

Open Sound Amplifier

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Choose Sound Amplifier.

On Pixel 3 and later, including Fold models, Sound Amplifier provides listening controls that are separate from music equalization. It is designed to make nearby speech and other sounds easier to hear, rather than to tune a song’s tonal balance.

Use Conversation mode

Conversation mode can focus on the conversation partner and reduce the prominence of other noise. Its controls include noise reduction plus separate adjustments for quiet sounds and high or low frequencies. These sliders are listening-assistance controls; they should not be treated as a system-wide EQ for every app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because Sound Amplifier is an accessibility feature, judge it by speech intelligibility and listening comfort rather than by whether music gains more bass. The presence of high/low-frequency sliders in this area does not contradict the absence of a documented global music equalizer: the controls serve a different purpose and are presented within Sound Amplifier.

Google describes the feature and its supported devices in the Pixel listening and accessibility guide.

Where to change bass and treble on a Pixel

There is no Google-documented universal Settings path for manual bass and treble on Pixel. Instead, identify the route that produces the sound:

  • Music or video app: look in that app’s playback, audio or equalizer menu. Any bands or presets there normally apply to that app’s output.
  • Bluetooth headphones or earbuds: check the accessory’s companion app or onboard controls. The accessory may process its own incoming audio.
  • USB-C headphones or a digital audio adapter: check any manufacturer software supplied for that device.
  • Phone speaker: use Adaptive Sound when your model and software support it; Pixel’s documented system controls do not provide manual global frequency sliders.

Do not assume that an EQ preset selected in one music app changes notification sounds, phone calls, alarms or audio from other apps. The Google pages cited here establish the Pixel system controls, but they do not establish a system-wide effect for third-party EQ controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to test whether an EQ is app-specific

  1. Play music in the app where you changed the EQ and note the result.
  2. Leave that app and trigger a notification or ringtone.
  3. Play audio from a different app using the same headphones or speaker.
  4. If only the original app changed, treat the EQ as app-level rather than global.
  5. When using Bluetooth or USB-C audio, check the accessory app separately because processing may occur in the accessory rather than on the Pixel.

This test does not turn a third-party control into a Pixel system feature; it simply helps you identify which device or app owns the adjustment.

Do you need to buy anything?

No physical product is required to change the Pixel volume, Adaptive Sound, Clear Calling, Spatial Audio or Sound Amplifier settings described here. The phone itself provides the documented controls. Headphones, Pixel Buds Pro, USB-C audio equipment and Bluetooth speakers are optional playback routes, not prerequisites for opening the settings.

If you choose an accessory for Spatial Audio, verify its compatibility and firmware requirements first. Google says Made by Google or Made for Google headphones are certified to work with Pixel, but certification does not remove the requirements for supported content, Pixel model or playback route. Do not buy an accessory merely to obtain a system-wide EQ that Pixel does not document.

Troubleshoot missing or ineffective audio options

The Equalizer menu is missing

That is expected in the documented Pixel system sound pages. Look inside the app playing the music or in the settings for the connected headphones instead of searching for a global Pixel EQ page. Different apps can place EQ under playback, audio, sound quality or a preset menu.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Adaptive Sound is not listed

  • Install the latest Android update.
  • Update Android System Intelligence through the available system-update or app-update mechanism.
  • Confirm that your model falls within Google’s listed Pixel 4a (5G) through Pixel 10 range, including Fold models.
  • Confirm that you are testing the phone’s built-in speaker, because Adaptive Sound does not process headphones or external speakers.

Clear Calling cannot be enabled during a call

Confirm that the phone is a Pixel 7 or later, including an eligible Fold model. If the hardware and software qualify, call bandwidth can still prevent Clear Calling from being available on a particular call. It will not act as a music EQ even when enabled.

Spatial Audio does not appear or sounds unchanged

  • Update Android and check the expanded volume panel as well as Settings > Sound & vibration > Spatial audio.
  • Verify that the movie or show has a supported 5.1-or-higher audio track.
  • Check whether your Pixel model and playback device support the selected route.
  • If using Pixel Buds Pro head tracking, update the earbuds’ firmware.
  • Remember that built-in-speaker Spatial Audio is restricted to Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the Pixel 10 family and Pixel Tablet.

An app EQ changed music but not other sounds

That behavior is consistent with app-level processing. Test the EQ within the same app and check the accessory’s companion controls when using headphones; do not infer that the setting is global merely because the music changed.

The wrong device is playing media

Press a volume button, open the expanded panel and check the media output choice when multiple Bluetooth devices are paired. Selecting the intended route is separate from changing the Media slider. After switching routes, reassess which features apply: Adaptive Sound is for the built-in speaker, while Spatial Audio depends on the selected compatible setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change the equalizer on my Google Pixel?

Pixel’s documented system settings do not include a global graphic equalizer. Open the EQ in the music or video app you use, or in the companion app for your headphones. Treat that control as app- or accessory-specific unless its maker documents broader coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where are audio settings on a Pixel phone?

Open Settings and tap Sound & vibration. The expanded panel opened with a volume button and its More control contains separate Media, Call, Ring, Notification and Alarm sliders. Adaptive Sound, Clear Calling and Spatial Audio appear under Sound & vibration when supported.

How do I adjust bass and treble on Pixel?

There is no Google-documented global bass-and-treble screen. Use the music app’s equalizer, a Bluetooth headphone companion app, or software supplied for USB-C audio equipment. Adaptive Sound changes built-in-speaker processing automatically and does not expose manual bass and treble bands.

How do I make my Pixel speaker sound better?

For supported models, go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Adaptive Sound and turn it on. It adjusts the built-in speaker for the environment without changing the volume. It does not apply to headphones or external speakers.

Why does changing Media volume not change my ringtone?

Pixel uses separate volume categories. Open the expanded volume panel and adjust Ring for the ringtone, Notification for alerts, Alarm for alarms, Call for conversations and Media for music or video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Adaptive Sound missing?

Google lists Adaptive Sound from Pixel 4a (5G) through Pixel 10, including Fold models, and requires current Android software plus the latest Android System Intelligence app. Update both, then test with the built-in speaker; the feature does not apply to headphones or external speakers.

Which Pixels support Clear Calling?

Clear Calling is documented for Pixel 7 and later, including Fold models. Availability can still depend on call bandwidth, so it may not be offered on every call.

Why can’t I turn on Spatial Audio?

Spatial Audio depends on the Pixel model, the playback route and supported content. Check for current Android software, try the expanded volume panel, verify a movie or show has a supported 5.1-or-higher track, and confirm accessory compatibility. Pixel Buds Pro head tracking also requires current firmware.

Can Sound Amplifier be used as a music equalizer?

Sound Amplifier and Conversation mode are accessibility listening tools, not a documented system-wide music EQ. Conversation mode can focus on a speaker, reduce other noise and provide controls for noise reduction, quiet sounds and high/low frequencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Pixel Buds or another accessory to change Pixel audio settings?

No. The phone’s volume, Adaptive Sound, Clear Calling, Spatial Audio and accessibility settings do not require a purchase. Headphones and speakers are optional playback routes; check their own companion controls if you want accessory-specific EQ.

The Bottom Line

Pixel does not document a system-wide graphic equalizer or global bass-and-treble sliders. Use the expanded volume panel for separate sound categories, Adaptive Sound for the built-in speaker, Clear Calling for eligible calls, Spatial Audio for supported content and devices, and Sound Amplifier for speech-focused accessibility listening. For manual EQ, use the specific music app or connected audio accessory, and do not assume that adjustment affects every sound on the phone.
